Summary
The intraoperative period follows induction of anaesthesia and is terminated with the safe discharge of the patient to the recovery area. After transfer of the patient from the anaesthetic room, the anaesthetist must ensure safe positioning of the patient and the re-establishment of appropriate monitoring while maintaining an appropriate depth of anaesthesia. This represents a period of significant risk for the patient, with the anaesthetist expected to complete a series of complex tasks simultaneously.
