Summary
Lethal injection has been the dominant method of execution in the United States for several decades, but in recent years, it has changed dramatically. Understanding the evolution of lethal injection shines important light on both the American death penalty’s recent history and also its possible future. These changes raise important Eighth Amendment questions, as well as practical issues about the long-term viability of lethal injection and perhaps even the death penalty generally.
