The coupling of Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) and Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI), referred to as RM-KHI, on a shock-accelerated inclined single-mode air–SF$_6$ interface is studied through shock-tube experiments, focusing on the evolution of the perturbation distributed along the inclined interface. To clearly capture the linear (overall linear to nonlinear) evolution of RM-KHI, a series of experiments with a weak (relatively strong) incident shock is conducted. For each series of experiments, various $\theta _{i}$ (angle between incident shock and equilibrium position of the initial interface) are considered. The nonlinear flow features manifest earlier and develop faster when $\theta _{i}$ is larger and/or shock is stronger. In addition, the interface with $\theta _{i}>0^{\circ }$ evolves obliquely along its equilibrium position under the effect of KHI. RMI dominates the early-time amplitude evolution regardless of $\theta _{i}$ and shock intensity, which arises from the discrepancy in the evolution laws between RMI and KHI. KHI promotes the post-early-stage amplitude growth and its contribution is related positively to $\theta _{i}$. An evident exponential-like amplitude evolution behaviour emerges in RM-KHI with a relatively strong shock and large $\theta _{i}$. The linear model proposed by Mikaelian (Phys. Fluids, vol. 6, 1994, pp. 1943–1945) is valid for RM-KHI within the linear period. In contrast, the adaptive vortex model (Sohn et al., Phys. Rev. E, vol. 82, 2010, p. 046711) can effectively predict both the interface morphology and overall amplitude evolutions from the linear to nonlinear regimes.

In gamma-ray binaries neutron star is orbiting a companion that produces a strong stellar wind. We demonstrate that observed properties of ‘stellar wind’–‘pulsar wind’ interaction depend both on the overall wind thrust ratio, as well as more subtle geometrical factors: the relative direction of the pulsar’s spin, the plane of the orbit, the direction of motion, and the instantaneous line of sight. Using fully 3D relativistic magnetohydrodynamical simulations we find that the resulting intrinsic morphologies can be significantly orbital phase-dependent: a given system may change from tailward-open to tailward-closed shapes. As a result, the region of unshocked pulsar wind can change by an order of magnitude over a quarter of the orbit. We calculate radiation maps and synthetic light curves for synchrotron (X-ray) and inverse-Compton emission (GeV-TeV), taking into account $\gamma $–$\gamma $ absorption. Our modelled light curves are in agreement with the phase-dependent observed light curves of LS5039.

The unsteady mechanism of unstart flow for an inlet with rectangular-to-elliptical shape transition (REST) under the off-design condition at a Mach of 4 is investigated using the delay detached eddy simulation method. With the help of numerical simulations, the unsteady dynamics, especially the low-frequency characteristics of the REST inlet unstart flow, as well as the self-sustaining mechanism, is investigated. The instantaneous flow illustrates the unsteady phenomena of the REST unstart flow, including the interaction between the cowl-closure leading edge (CLE) shock and the shear layer, breathing of the separation bubble, flapping of the separation shock, instability of the shear layer and vortex shedding along the shear layer. The spectral analysis reveals that the lower frequency dynamics is associated with the breathing of the separation bubble and the flapping motion of the separation shock wave, while the higher frequency is related to the instability of the shear layer affected by cowl-closure leading edge shock and the formation of shedding vortices. Further, coherence analysis shows that the contribution of these flow structures dominating the low-frequency dynamics couple with each other. Based on the dynamic mode decomposition results, the characteristics that contribute to the unsteady behaviour of unstart flow are summarized. The streamwise vortices downstream of the separation and the shedding vortices are believed to be the main driving force of the global low-frequency unsteadiness of the REST inlet unstart flow under the off-design condition. Moreover, the CLE shock plays an important role in the process during the dominant flow structure conversion from the backflow within the separation bubble into elongated streamwise structures.

Wall temperature has a significant effect on shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions (STBLIs) and has become a non-negligible factor in the design process of hypersonic vehicles. In this paper, direct numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the wall temperature effects on STBLIs over a 34° compression ramp at Mach number 6. Three values of the wall-to-recovery-temperature ratio (0.50, 0.75 and 1.0) are considered in the simulations. The results show that the size of the separation bubble declines significantly as the wall temperature decreases. This is because the momentum profile of the boundary layer becomes fuller with wall cooling, which means the near-wall fluid has a greater momentum to suppress flow separation. An equation based on the free-interaction theory is proposed to predict the distributions of the wall pressure upstream of the corner at different wall temperatures. The prediction results are generally consistent with the simulation results (Reynolds number Reτ ranges from 160 to 675). In addition, the low-frequency unsteadiness is studied through the weighted power spectral density of the wall pressure and the correlation between the upstream and downstream. The results indicate that the low-frequency motion of the separation shock is mainly driven by the downstream mechanism and that wall cooling can significantly suppress the low-frequency unsteadiness, including the strength and streamwise range of the low-frequency motions.

Shock–droplet interaction in the early stage involves intricate wave structures. Investigating this phenomenon is inherently challenging due to the fine spatial and temporal scales involved. Past research has suggested that the occurrence of cavitation, marked by a negative peak pressure, is linked to the focus of the reflected expansion wave. In this study, a high-fidelity compressible numerical approach is utilized to replicate the initial phase of shock–droplet interactions. The location of the negative peak pressure is meticulously documented and compared with experimental measurement and numerical results. Results indicate a strong alignment between the negative peak pressure positions identified through numerical simulations and the focal points identified in theoretical models for low gas–liquid wave velocity ratios. However, this alignment is notably disrupted when dealing with higher gas–liquid wave velocity ratios. Further enhancements are made to the theoretical model, enabling a more precise depiction of internal wave structures and focus points, particularly under conditions of high gas–liquid wave velocity ratios. The study delves into the various factors influencing internal pressure fluctuations within the liquid droplet, categorizing them into four phases: the shock wave effect, relaxation effect, fluctuation effect, and expansion wave effect. Analysing the pressure decrease portion reveals that while the converging of the reflected expansion wave leads to a substantial pressure drop, it accounts for only a fraction of the total pressure variation. Consequently, any model predicting negative peak pressure positions must comprehensively consider all contributing factors.

We investigate Reynolds number effects in strong shock-wave/turbulent boundary-layer interactions (STBLI) by leveraging a new database of wall-resolved and long-integrated large-eddy simulations. The database encompasses STBLI with massive boundary-layer separation at Mach $2.0$, impinging-shock angle $40^{\circ }$ and friction Reynolds numbers ${\textit {Re}}_\tau$ $355$, $1226$ and $5118$. Our analysis shows that the shape of the reverse-flow bubble is notably different at low and high Reynolds number, while the mean-flow separation length, separation-shock angle and incipient plateau pressure are rather insensitive to Reynolds number variations. Velocity statistics reveal a shift in the peak location of the streamwise Reynolds stress from the separation-shock foot to the core of the detached shear layer at high Reynolds number, which we attribute to increased pressure transport in the separation-shock excursion domain. Additionally, in the high Reynolds case, the separation shock originates deep within the turbulent boundary, resulting in intensified wall-pressure fluctuations and spanwise variations associated with the passage of coherent velocity structures. Temporal spectra of various signals show energetic low-frequency content in all cases, along with a distinct peak in the bubble-volume spectra at a separation-length-based Strouhal number $St_{L_{sep}}\approx 0.1$. The separation shock is also found to lag behind bubble-volume variations, consistent with the acoustic propagation time from reattachment to separation and a downstream mechanism driving the shock motion. Finally, dynamic mode decomposition of three-dimensional fields suggests a Reynolds-independent statistical link among separation-shock excursions, velocity streaks and large-scale vortices at low frequencies.

Coherent small-amplitude unsteadiness of the shock wave and the separation region over a canonical double cone flow, termed in literature as oscillation-type unsteadiness, is experimentally studied at Mach 6. The double cone model is defined by three non-dimensional geometric parameters: fore- and aft-cone angles ($\theta _1$ and $\theta _2$), and ratio of the conical slant lengths ($\varLambda$). Previous studies of oscillations have been qualitative in nature, and mostly restricted to a special case of the cone model with fixed $\theta _1 = 0^\circ$ and $\theta _2 = 90^\circ$ (referred to as the spike-cylinder model), where $\varLambda$ becomes the sole governing parameter. In the present effort we investigate the self-sustained flow oscillations in the $\theta _1$-$\varLambda$ parameter space for fixed $\theta _2 = 90^\circ$ using high-speed schlieren visualisation. The experiments reveal two distinct subtypes of oscillations, characterised by the motion (or lack thereof) of the separation point on the fore-cone surface. The global time scale associated with flow oscillation is extracted using spectral proper orthogonal decomposition. The non-dimensional frequency (Strouhal number) of oscillation is seen to exhibit distinct scaling for the two oscillation subtypes. The relationship observed between the local flow properties, instability of the shear layer, and geometric constraints on the flow suggests that an aeroacoustic feedback mechanism sustains the oscillations. Based on this understanding, a simple model with no empiricism is developed for the Strouhal number. The model predictions are found to match well with experimental measurements. The model provides helpful physical insight into the nature of the self-sustained flow oscillations over a double cone at high speeds.

In this study, the asymptotic solutions of the pressure variations induced by two trains passing each other in a tunnel are theoretically investigated. The one-dimensional inviscid compressible airflow is analysed, and two methods to obtain numerically exact solutions and $M_{H}$ expansion formulas for approximate equations are presented, where $M_{H}$ is the Mach number of the high-speed train. The pressure coefficient, corresponding to the maximum value of the magnitude of the pressure, is expressed as $|c_{p}|_{max}=|c_{p,min}|=[({R}/({1-R}))$ $(1+\alpha )^{2}+({R(1-R)}/{(1-2R)^{2}})(1-\alpha )^{2}]+O[M_{H}]$, where $c_{p,min}<0$, $\alpha =U_{L}/U_{H}$ and $U_{L}$ and $U_{H}$ denote the speeds of the low- and high-speed trains, respectively, and $R$ is the cross-sectional area ratio of the train to the tunnel. The theoretical results indicate the dependence of the speeds of the two trains on the pressure distribution and that the maximum magnitude of the asymptotic pressure for a fixed value of $M_{H}$ is obtained for $\alpha =1$ and $\alpha =0$ when $R< R_{c}$ and $R>R_{c}$, respectively, where $R_{c}$ denotes the critical blockage ratio. Because the airflow along the side of the low-speed train, induced by the low-speed train, is along the running direction of the high-speed train and reduces the relative velocity of the high-speed train as the two trains pass each other, $|c_{p}|_{max}$ for $\alpha =0$ is larger than $|c_{p}|_{max}$ for $\alpha =1$ when $R>R_{c}$. It is theoretically demonstrated that, as conventional high-speed railway systems satisfy $R< R_{c}$, a conservative pressure estimation can be established assuming $\alpha =1$.

Cowl-induced incident shock wave/boundary layer interactions (ISWBLIs) under the influence of shoulder expansion represent one of the dominant phenomena in supersonic inlets. To provide a more comprehensive understanding of how an expansion corner affects the ISWBLI, a detailed experimental and analytical study is performed in a Mach 2.73 flow in this work. Pressure measurement, schlieren photography and surface oil-flow visualisation are used to record flow features, including the pressure distribution, separation extent and surface-flow topological structures. Our results reveal three types of ISWBLIs influenced by the expansion corner. When the shock intensity is weak, the separation is small scale with the expansion waves emanating from the expansion corner. This is the first type of expansion-corner-affected ISWBLI (EC-ISWBLI). When the incident shock wave is strong, large-scale separation occurs, accompanied by the disappearance of expansion waves, forming the second type of EC-SWBLI. The expansion corner induces a ‘lock-in’ effect in which the separation onset is consistently locked near the expansion corner regardless of the incident shock intensity and impingement position. The third type of EC-ISWBLI occurs when the shock is sufficiently strong and the impingement point is close to the expansion corner. In this interaction, the ‘lock-in’ effect ceases to manifest. Moreover, a shock polar-incorporating inviscid model is employed to elucidate the shock patterns. Two criteria are established by combining free interaction theory with this model. The first criterion provides valuable insights into the evolution of separations with a minimal overall pressure rise and the second criterion determines the threshold for the occurrence of the ‘lock-in’ effect.

In this paper, direct numerical simulations in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers over a $24^{\circ }$ compression ramp at Mach 6.0 are performed. The wall skin friction and its spanwise non-homogeneity in the interaction region are analysed via the spectral analysis and drag decomposition method. On the compression ramp, the premultiplied spanwise energy spectrum of wall shear stress $\tau _{w}$ reveals two energetic spanwise length scales. One occurs in the region of $x/\delta _{ref}=0\unicode{x2013}3$ ($x=0$ lies in the compression corner; $\delta _{ref}$ is the boundary layer thickness upstream of the interaction region) and is consistent with that of the large-scale streamwise vortices, indicating that the fluctuation intensity of $\tau _{w}$ is associated with the Görtler-type structures. The other one is observed downstream of $x/\delta _{ref}=3.0$ and corresponds to the regenerated elongated streaky structures. The fluctuation intensity of $\tau _{w}$ peaks at $x/\delta _{ref}=3.0$, where both the above energetic length scales are observed. The drag decomposition method proposed by Li et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 875, 2019, pp. 101–123) is extended to include the effects of spanwise non-homogeneity so that it can be used in the interaction region where the mean flow field and the mean skin friction $C_f$ exhibit an obvious spanwise heterogeneity. The results reveal that, in the upstream turbulent boundary layer, the drag contribution arising from the spanwise heterogeneity can be neglected, while this value on the compression ramp is up to 20.7 % of $C_f$, resulting from the Görtler-type vortices. With the aid of the drag decomposition method, it is found that the main flow features that contribute positively to the amplification of $C_f$ and its rapid increase on the compression ramp includes: the density increase across the shock, the high mean shear stress and turbulence amplification around the detached shear layer and the Favre-averaged downward velocity towards the ramp wall. Compared with the spanwise-averaged value, $C_f$ and its components at the spanwise station where the downwash and upwash of the Görtler-type vortices occur reveal a spanwise variation exceeding 10 %.

Three-dimensional effects of sidewalls on the low-frequency unsteadiness of the shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) are of academic and practical importance but not yet well understood. Considerable attention has been paid to the viscous effect of sidewalls, whereas the potential inviscid confinement effect of sidewalls has received little attention. The present work provides experimental evidence of multiscale spanwise travelling waves crossing the separation front under the confinement of sidewalls. Global pressure measurements were made for a sidewall-confined 24$^\circ$ compression ramp interaction in Mach-2.83 flow using fast-responding pressure-sensitive paint. The unsteady pressure in a statistically two-dimensional intermittent region suggests that in addition to the canonical streamwise oscillation, the separation front exhibits significant low-frequency, multiscale spanwise distortion. Modal analysis further reveals that multiscale spanwise unsteadiness has higher intensity and frequency than the streamwise oscillation. Such strong spanwise unsteadiness calls attention to the low-frequency unsteadiness in previous sidewall-confined SBLI experiments and encourages further study on the mechanism of the confinement effect.

The geometrical properties of streamlines, such as the curvatures, directions and positions, are studied in steady inviscid compressible flow fields via differential geometry theories and conservation laws. The influences of the streamline geometries on the flow speeds and pressures are also identified and discussed. By transforming the streamlines to fill the domain and satisfy the boundary conditions, a unified geometry-based solver, the streamline transformation method, is proposed for both subsonic and supersonic regions. The governing equations and boundary conditions along streamlines and shock waves are also derived. This method is verified by numerical results of three typical flow fields, including the subsonic channel flow, the supersonic downstream of attached shock waves and especially the subsonic/supersonic downstream of detached bow shock waves. Both two-dimensional planar and axisymmetric flow fields are considered. Compared with the results from computational fluid dynamics, good agreements are achieved by this method, while fewer computational resources, by an order of magnitude, are consumed. Features of these flow fields are also analysed from a geometrical perspective, such as flow speeds and pressures deviated by the wall curvatures, and three-dimensional effects in the after-shock flow fields. For a hyperbolic-shaped bow shock wave, the stand-off distances and the transitions from subsonic to supersonic regions are also discussed. As indicated by the accuracy, efficiency and applicability in a wide range of flow speeds, the streamline transformation method would be a potential candidate for the theoretical analysis and inverse design of high-speed flow fields, especially where the subsonic regions exist downstream of strong shock waves.

Richtmyer–Meshkov (RM) instability at a single-mode interface impacted by a cylindrical divergent shock with low to moderate Mach numbers is investigated experimentally. The motion of an unperturbed interface is first examined to obtain the background flow. The shocked interface moves uniformly at the early stage, but later decelerates. The stronger the incident shock, the larger the interface deceleration, which is reasonably predicted by a one-dimensional model considering the effect of postshock non-uniformity. Such a deceleration greatly inhibits the growths of harmonics of an initially perturbed interface and, consequently, the divergent RM instability presents very weak nonlinearity from early to late stages. Particularly, higher-Mach-number cases present weaker nonlinearity due to larger deceleration there. This abnormal linear growth regime is reported for the first time. Benefiting from this, the incompressible linear model holds validity at all stages of divergent RM instability. It is also found that compressibility inhibits the initial growth rate, but produces a weak influence on the subsequent instability growth.

The twin-jet configuration allows two different scenarios to close the screech feedback. For each jet, there is one loop involving disturbances which originate in that jet and arrive at its own receptivity point in phase (self-excitation). The other loop is associated with free-stream acoustic waves that radiate from the other jet, reinforcing the self-excited screech (cross-excitation). In this work, the role of the free-stream acoustic mode and the guided-jet mode as a closure mechanism for twin rectangular jet screech is explored by identifying eligible points of return for each path, where upstream waves propagating from such a point arrive at the receptivity location with an appropriate phase relation. Screech tones generated by these jets are found to be intermittent with an out-of-phase coupling as a dominant coupling mode. The instantaneous phase difference between the twin jets computed by the Hilbert transform suggests that a competition between out-of-phase and in-phase coupling is responsible for the intermittency. To model wave components of the screech feedback while ensuring perfect phase locking, an ensemble average of leading spectral proper orthogonal decomposition modes is obtained from several segments of large-eddy simulation data that correspond to periods of invariant phase difference between the two jets. Each mode is then extracted by retaining relevant wavenumber components produced via a streamwise Fourier transform. Spatial cross-correlation analysis of the resulting modes shows that most of the identified points of return for the cross-excitation are synchronised with the guided jet mode self-excitation, supporting that it is preferred in closing rectangular twin-jet screech coupling.

The shock wave accelerating a heavy fluid layer can induce reverberating waves that continuously interact with the first and second interfaces. In order to manipulate the perturbation growths at fluid-layer interfaces, we present a theoretical framework to eliminate the reverberating waves. A model is established to predict the individual freeze-out (i.e. stagnation of perturbation growth) for the first and second interfaces under specific flow conditions determined based on the shock dynamics theory. The theoretical model quantifies the controllable parameters required for freeze-out, including the initial amplitudes of the first and second interfaces, the interface coupling strength and the maximum initial layer thickness preventing the second interface's phase reversal. The effectiveness of the model in predicting individual freeze-out for the first and second interfaces is validated numerically over a wide range of initial conditions. The upper and lower limits of initial amplitudes for the freeze-out of the whole fluid-layer width growth are further predicted. Within this amplitude range, a slightly higher initial amplitude for the second interface is specified, effectively arresting the growth of the entire fluid-layer width before the phase reversal of the second interface.

The aeroelasticity of a panel in the presence of a shock is a fundamental issue of great significance in the development of hypersonic vehicles. In practical engineering, cavity pressure emerges as a crucial factor that influences the nonlinear dynamical characteristics of the panel. This study focuses on the aeroelastic bifurcation of a flexible panel subjected to both cavity pressure and oblique shock. To this end, a computational method is devised, coupling a high-fidelity reduced-order model for unsteady aerodynamic loads with nonlinear structural equations. The solution is meticulously tracked by continuous calculations. The obtained results indicate that cavity pressure plays a pivotal role in determining the bifurcation and stability characteristics of the system. First, the system exhibits hysteresis behaviour in response to the ascending and descending dynamic pressures. The evolution of hysteresis behaviour originates from the phenomenon of cusp catastrophe. Second, variations in cavity pressure induce three types of bifurcation phenomena, exhibiting characteristics akin to supercritical Hopf bifurcation, subcritical Hopf bifurcation and saddle-node bifurcation of cycles. The system's response at the critical points of these bifurcations manifests as long-period asymptotic flutter or explosive flutter. Lastly, the evolution of the dynamical system among these three types of bifurcations is an important factor contributing to the discrepancies observed in certain research results. This study enhances the understanding of the nonlinear dynamical behaviour of panel aeroelasticity in complex practical environments and provides new explanations for the discrepancies observed in certain research results.

Shock waves are of great interest in many fields of science and engineering, but the mechanisms of their formation, maintenance and dissipation are still not well understood. While all transport processes existing in a shock wave contribute to its compression and irreversibility, they are not of equal importance. To figure out the roles of viscosity and heat conduction in shock transition, the existence of smooth shock solutions and the counter-intuitive entropy overshoot phenomenon (the specific entropy is not monotonically increasing and exhibits a peak inside the shock front) are theoretically and numerically investigated, with emphasis on the effects of viscosity and heat conduction. Instead of higher-order hydrodynamics, the Navier–Stokes formalism is employed for its stability and simplicity. Supplemented with nonlinear thermodynamically consistent constitutive relations, the Navier–Stokes equations are adequate to demonstrate the general nature of shock profiles. It is found that heat conduction cannot sustain strong shocks without the presence of viscosity, while viscosity can maintain smooth shock transition at all strengths, regardless of heat conduction. Hence, the critical role in shock compression is played by viscosity rather than heat conduction. Nevertheless, the dispensability of heat conduction would not compromise its essential role in the emergence of an entropy peak. It is the entropy flux resulting from heat conduction that neutralises the positive entropy production and thus prevents the decreasing entropy from violating the second law of thermodynamics. This mechanism of entropy overshoot has not been addressed previously in the literature and is revealed using the entropy balance equation.

This work investigates the compressible turbulence induced by Richtmyer–Meshkov (RM) instability using high-resolution Navier–Stokes simulations. Special attention is paid to the characteristics of RM turbulence including the mixing width growth, the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) decay, the mixing degree, inhomogeneity and anisotropy. Three distinct initial perturbation spectra are designed at the interface to reveal the initial condition imprint on the RM turbulence. Results show that cases with initial large-scale perturbations present a stronger imprint on statistical characteristics and also a quicker growth of mixing width, whereas cases with small-scale perturbations present a faster TKE decay, greater mixing level, higher isotropy and homogeneity. A thorough analysis on the inter-scale energy transfer in RM turbulence is also presented with the coarse-graining approach that exposes the two subfilter-scale (SFS) energy fluxes (i.e. deformation work and baropycnal work). A strong correlation between the nonlinear model of baropycnal work (Fluids, 4(2), 2019) and the simulation results is confirmed for the first time, demonstrating its potential in modelling the RM turbulence. Two primary mechanisms of baropycnal work (the straining and baroclinic generation processes) are explored with this nonlinear model. The evolutions of two SFS energy fluxes exhibit distinct behaviours at various filter scales, in different flow regions and under various flow motions (strain and rotation). It is found that all three cases share the common inter-scale energy transfer dynamics, which is important for modelling the RM turbulence.

The generation of organic compounds relevant to the origin of living beings is easily achieved if reducing conditions exist in the environment; however, proposed models of primitive atmospheres do not favour these conditions. This work considers the quantity and possible size of the cosmic bodies that could have impacted the Earth between 4.2 and 3.8 Ga. Different atmospheres (with gases such as CO2, CO, N2, CH4) were experimentally irradiated by an Nd-YAG laser (used to simulate the energy of a shock wave produced by the interaction of a cosmic body with the atmosphere). Although the main products are short-chain, saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is the most abundant in some atmospheres. HCN is an important precursor of the organic molecules relevant to chemical evolution. According to our calculations, between 1023 and 1025 g of HCN could have been produced by the energy released to the atmosphere from the entry of cosmic objects between 4.2 and 3.8 Ga. Therefore, this shock wave energy could play an important role in the processes of chemical evolution.

This paper characterizes the refraction of a triple-shock configuration at planar fast–slow gas interfaces. The primary objective is to reveal the wave configurations and elucidate the mechanisms governing circulation deposition and velocity perturbation on the interface caused by triple-shock refraction. The incident triple-shock configuration is generated by diffracting a planar shock around a rigid cylinder, and four interfaces with various $Z_{{r}}$ (i.e. acoustic impedance ratio across the interface) are considered. An analytical model describing the triple-shock refraction is developed, which accurately predicts both the wave configurations as well as circulation deposition and velocity perturbation. Depending on $Z_{{r}}$, three distinct patterns of transmitted waves can be anticipated: a triple-shock configuration; a four-shock configuration; a four-wave configuration. The underlying mechanism for the formation of these wave configurations is elucidated through shock polar analysis. A novel physical insight into the contribution of triple-shock refraction to the interface perturbation growth is provided. The results indicate that the reflected shock in an incident triple-shock configuration makes significant negative contribution to both circulation deposition and velocity perturbation. This investigation elucidates the underlying mechanism responsible for the relatively insignificant contribution of baroclinic circulation to the Richtmyer–Meshkov-like instability induced by a non-uniform shock, and provides an explanation for the decrease in growth rate of interface perturbation amplitude with increasing Atwood number.
