Overtaking collisions of large-amplitude solitons are investigated via fluid simulations for a plasma consisting of cold ions and Boltzmann-distributed electrons. To achieve this, a new fluid simulation code is presented. In addition, a novel approach to construct soliton initial conditions is developed. Using these ideas, initial conditions are combined that allows the simulation of overtaking collisions. It is shown that, in the small-amplitude regime, simulation results agree well with the two-soliton solution obtained from reductive perturbation theory. Interestingly, in the large amplitude regime, both the slow and fast solitons re-emerge after the collision with no significant change, showing that the collisions remain elastic. A comparison between reductive perturbation analysis and the simulations show that the only significant effect of higher order nonlinearities on overtaking collisions is a reduction in the magnitude of the phase shifts of both solitons.

The problem of the assimilation of a cryogenic fuel pellet injected into a hot plasma is considered. Due to the transparency to ambient particles of the plasmoid, the localised region of high-density plasma created by ionisation of the ablated pellet material, electrons reach a ‘quasiequilibrium’ (QE) state which is characterised by a steady-state on the fastest collisional time scale. The simplified electron kinetic equation of the QE state is solved. Taking a velocity moment of the higher-order electron kinetic equation, which is valid on the expansion time scale, permits a fluid closure, yielding an evolution equation for the macroscopic parameters describing the QE distribution function. In contrast to the Braginskii equations, the closure does not require that electrons have a short mean free path compared with the size of density perturbations, and permits an anisotropic and highly non-Maxwellian distribution function. As the QE distribution function accounts for both trapped and passing electrons, the self-consistent electric potential that causes the expansion can be properly described, in contrast to earlier models of pellet plasmoid expansion with an unbounded potential. The plasmoid expansion is simulated using both a Vlasov model and a cold-fluid model for the ions. During the expansion plasmoid ions and electrons obtain nearly equal amounts of energy; as hot ambient electrons provide this energy in the form of collisional heating of plasmoid electrons, the expansion of a pellet plasmoid is expected to be a potent mechanism for the transfer of energy from electrons to ions on a time scale shorter than that of ion–electron thermalisation.

Isothermal fluid turbulence simulations have been performed in the edge and scrape-off layer (SOL) of an analytic stellarator configuration with an island divertor, thereby providing numerical insight into edge turbulence in regions around islands in a stellarator. The steady-state transport follows the a curvature drive that is inverse to the major radius ($1/R$) toward the outboard side, but large fluctuations are present throughout the island divertor region, with the average wavelength of similar size to the island width. The system exhibits a prominent $m=2$, $n=5$ mode, where m is the poloidal mode number and n is the toroidal mode number, although other modes are present. The amplitude and radial extent of the density fluctuations are similar throughout the edge and SOL, but can decrease near island O-points. The fluctuations exhibit a predominantly positive skewness on the outboard midplane, indicating blob-like perturbations for the transport into the outer SOL. It is determined that a point on the separatrix is generally more correlated with regions outside of the SOL than a nearby reference point which does not lie on the separatrix.

Collisionless shocks are frequently analysed using the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) formalism, even though MHD assumes a small mean free path. Yet, isotropy of pressure, the fruit of binary collisions and assumed in MHD, may not apply in collisionless shocks. This is especially true within a magnetized plasma, where the field can stabilize an anisotropy. In a previous article (Bret & Narayan, J. Plasma Phys., vol. 88, no. 6, 2022b, p. 905880615), a model was presented capable of dealing with the anisotropies that may arise at the front crossing. It was solved for any orientation of the field with respect to the shock front. Yet, for some values of the upstream parameters, several downstream solutions were found. Here, we complete the work started in Bret & Narayan (J. Plasma Phys., vol. 88, no. 6, 2022b, p. 905880615) by showing how to pick the physical solution out of the ones offered by the algebra. This is achieved by 2 means: (i) selecting the solution that has the downstream field obliquity closest to the upstream one. This criterion is exemplified on the parallel case and backed up by particle-in-cell simulations. (ii) Filtering out solutions which do not satisfy a criteria already invoked to trim multiple solutions in MHD: the evolutionarity criterion, that we assume valid in the collisionless case. The end result is a model in which a given upstream configuration results in a unique, or no downstream configuration (as in MHD). The largest departure from MHD is found for the case of a parallel shock.

The Okubo–Weiss (Okubo, Deep-Sea Res., vol. 17, issue 3, 1970, pp. 445–454; Weiss, Physica D, vol. 48, issue 2, 1991, pp. 273–294) criterion has been widely used as a diagnostic tool to divide a two-dimensional (2-D) hydrodynamical flow field into hyperbolic and elliptic regions. This paper considers extension of these ideas to 2-D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows, and presents an Okubo–Weiss-type criterion to parameterize the magnetic field topology in 2-D MHD flows. This ensues via its topological connections with the intrinsic metric properties of the underlying magnetic flux manifold, and is illustrated by recasting the Okubo–Weiss-type criterion via the 2-D MHD stationary generalized Alfvénic state condition to approximate the slow-flow-variation ansatz imposed in its derivation. The Okubo–Weiss-type parameter then turns out to be related to the sign definiteness of the Gaussian curvature of the magnetic flux manifold. A similar formulation becomes possible for 2-D electron MHD flows, by using the generalized magnetic flux framework to incorporate the electron-inertia effects. Numerical simulations of quasi-stationary vortices in 2-D MHD flows in the decaying turbulence regime are then given to demonstrate that the Okubo–Weiss-type criterion is able to separate the MHD flow field into elliptic and hyperbolic field configurations very well.

The gyrokinetic theory of the residual flow, in the electrostatic limit, is revisited, with optimized stellarators in mind. We consider general initial conditions for the problem, and identify cases that lead to a non-zonal residual electrostatic potential, i.e. one having a significant component that varies within a flux surface. We investigate the behaviour of the ‘intermediate residual’ in stellarators, a measure of the flow that remains after geodesic acoustic modes have damped away, but before the action of the slower damping that is caused by unconfined particle orbits. The case of a quasi-isodynamic stellarator is identified as having a particularly large such residual, owing to the small orbit width achieved by optimization.

This paper establishes a mean-field equation set and an energy theorem to provide a theoretical basis in view of the development of self-consistent, physics-based turbulent transport models for mean-field transport codes. A rigorous averaging procedure identifies the exact form of the perpendicular turbulent fluxes which are modelled by ad hoc diffusive terms in mean-field transport codes, next to other closure terms which are not commonly considered. Earlier work suggested that the turbulent $E\times B$ particle and heat fluxes, which are thus identified to be important closure terms, can be modelled to reasonable accuracy using the kinetic energy in the $E\times B$ velocity fluctuations ($k_{E}$). The related enstrophy led to further modelling improvements in an initial study, although further analysis is required. To support this modelling approach, transport equations are derived analytically for both quantities. In particular, an energy theorem is established in which the various source and sink terms of $k_{E}$ are shown to couple to mean-field and turbulent parallel kinetic energy, kinetic energy in the other perpendicular velocity components, the thermal energy and the magnetic energy. This provides expressions for the interchange, drift-wave and Reynolds stress terms amongst others. Note that most terms in these energy equations are in turn closure terms. It is suggested to evaluate these terms using reference data from detailed turbulence code simulations in future work.

We present a theoretical analysis of electron pitch-angle scattering by ion-acoustic electrostatic fluctuations present in the Earth's bow shock and, presumably, collisionless shocks in general. We numerically simulate electron interaction with a single wave packet to demonstrate the scattering through phase bunching and phase trapping and quantify electron pitch-angle scattering in dependence on the wave amplitude and wave normal angle to the local magnetic field. The iterative mapping technique is used to model pitch-angle scattering of electrons by a large number of wave packets, which have been reported in the Earth's bow shock. Assuming that successive electron scatterings are not correlated, we revealed that the long-term dynamics of electrons is diffusive. The diffusion coefficient depends on the ratio $\varPhi _0/W$ between the wave packet amplitude and electron energy, $D\propto (\varPhi _0/W)^{\nu }$. A quasi-linear scaling ($\nu \approx 2$) is observed for sufficiently small wave amplitudes, $\varPhi _0\lesssim 10^{-3}W$, while the diffusion is nonlinear ($1<\nu <2$) above this threshold. We show that pitch-angle diffusion of ${\lesssim }1$ keV electrons in the Earth's bow shock can be nonlinear. The corresponding diffusion coefficient scales with the intensity $E_{w}^{2}$ of the electrostatic fluctuations in a nonlinear fashion, $D\propto E_{w}^{\nu }$ with $\nu <2$, while its expected values in the Earth's bow shock are $D\sim 0.1\unicode{x2013}100$ $(T_{e}/W)^{\nu -1/2}\,{\rm rad}^{2}\,{\rm s}^{-1}$. We speculate that in the Earth's quasi-perpendicular bow shock the stochastic shock drift acceleration mechanism with pitch-angle scattering provided by the electrostatic fluctuations can contribute to the acceleration of thermal electrons up to approximately 1 keV. The potential effects of a finite perpendicular coherence scale of the wave packets on the efficiency of electron scattering are discussed.

A modulational instability of nonlinearly interacting electron whistlers and magnetosonic perturbations is studied in the present paper. For typical parameters, there is no modulational instability. However, modulational instability appears in special cases. For example, when the whistler wavenumber is small enough, there is modulational instability. Its growth rate decreases as the angle between the external magnetic field and the perturbed wave's direction increases, while it increases as the whistler wavenumber increases. It is also found that there is no modulational instability when the whistler wavenumber is larger than a critical value ($k_0 > 0.05$), in which the perturbed wave frequency increases as the angle between the external magnetic field and the perturbed wave's direction increases when the angle between the external magnetic field and the perturbed wave's direction is large enough. Whereas, the perturbed wave frequency first increases as the whistler wavenumber increases, reaches a peak value and then decreases as whistler wavenumber increases.

It is known that a nonlinear Schrödinger equation describes the self-modulation of a large amplitude circularly polarized wave in relativistic electron–positron plasmas in the weakly and strongly magnetized limits. Here, we show that such an equation can be written as a modified second Painlevé equation, producing accelerated propagating wave solutions for those nonlinear plasmas. This solution even allows the plasma wave to reverse its direction of propagation. The acceleration parameter depends on the plasma magnetization. This accelerating solution is different to the usual soliton solution propagating at constant speed.

The theory of the terahertz (THz) waves emission from a near-critical plasma slab under the action of the focused p-polarized laser pulse is developed. The spectral, angular and energy characteristics of the THz signal are studied as functions of the focusing degree and the incidence angle of laser radiation, as well as the density and thickness of the plasma slab. It is shown that the extremely strong increase in the energy of the THz signal (up to millijoule level) and conversion rate (up to 10 %) occurs at the almost normal incidence of the ultra-short, tightly focused p-polarized laser pulse on the thin plasma slab with the near-critical density and rare electron collisions.

A conducting cylinder with a uniform magnetic field along its axis and radial temperature gradient is considered at the stationary state. At large temperature gradients the azimuthal Hall electrical current creates an axial magnetic field whose strength may be comparable with the original one. It is shown that the magnetic field, generated by the azimuthal Hall current, leads to the decrease of a magnetic field originated by external sources, and this suppression increases with an increase of the electromotive force, connected with thermodiffusion. Obtained results can help to investigate the influence of the Hall current on the coupled magnetothermal evolution of magnetic and electric fields in neutron stars, white dwarfs and, possibly, in laboratory facilities.

Generalising the Elsässer variables, we introduce the $Q$-variables. These are more flexible than the Elsässer variables, because they also allow us to track waves with phase speeds different than the Alfvén speed. We rewrite the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations with these $Q$-variables. We consider also the linearised version of the resulting MHD equations in a uniform plasma, and recover the classical Alfvén waves, but also separate the fast and slow magnetosonic waves into upward- and downward-propagating waves. Moreover, we show that the $Q$-variables may also track the upward- and downward-propagating surface Alfvén waves in a non-uniform plasma, displaying the power of our generalisation. In the end, we lay the mathematical framework for driving solar wind models with a multitude of wave drivers.

The self-consistent propagation of electrical impulses and of the accompanying distortions of the electron surface in the framework of a cold plasma model with a sharp boundary has been described with help of a derived system of two equations. The method of ‘shallow water theory’ has been applied for the case of bounded plasma and deriving an equation with which to link the spatial and temporal structures and evolution of the boundary curvature and the surface charge. Under certain conditions, such perturbations can propagate along the boundary without changing their shape for a long distance. An approximate analytical solution has been found, and numerical calculations have been performed. Mutual connections between basic parameters of the considered perturbations (velocity components, electrostatic field, etc.) have been presented.

The impact of an edge radial electric field on the particle orbits and the orbital spectrum in an axisymmetric toroidal magnetic equilibrium is investigated using a guiding centre canonical formalism. Poloidal and bounce/transit-averaged toroidal precession frequencies are calculated, highlighting the role of the radial electric field. The radial electric field is shown to drastically modify the resonance conditions between particles with certain kinetic characteristics and specific perturbative non-axisymmetric modes, and to enable the formation of transport barriers. The locations of the resonances and the transport barriers that determine the particle, energy and momentum transport are shown to be accurately pinpointed in the phase space by employing the calculated orbital frequencies.

The two-time energy spectrum of weak magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is found by applying a wave-turbulence closure to the cumulant hierarchy constructed from the dynamical equations. Solutions are facilitated via asymptotic expansions in terms of the small parameter $\varepsilon$, describing the ratio of time scales corresponding to Alfvénic propagation and nonlinear interactions between counter-propagating Alfvén waves. The strength of nonlinearity at a given spatial scale is further quantified by an integration over all possible delta-correlated modes compliant in a given set of three-wave interactions that are associated with energy flux through the said scale. The wave-turbulence closure for the two-time spectrum uncovers a secularity occurring on a time scale of order $\varepsilon ^{-2}$, and the asymptotic expansion for the spectrum is reordered in a manner comparable to the one-time case. It is shown that for the regime of stationary turbulence, the two-time energy spectrum exponentially decays on a lagged time scale $(\varepsilon ^2 \gamma _k^s)^{-1}$ in proportion to the strength of the associated three-wave interactions, characterized by nonlinear decorrelation frequency $\gamma _k^s$. The scaling of the form $k_{\perp } v_0 \chi _0$ exhibited by this frequency is reminiscent of random sweeping by the outer scale with characteristic fluctuation velocity $v_0$ that is modified due to competition with Alfvénic propagation (characterized by $\chi _0$) at the said scale. A brief calculation of frequency broadening of the power spectrum due to nonlinear interactions is also presented.

We describe the interaction of parallel-propagating Alfvén waves with ion-acoustic waves and other Alfvén waves, in magnetized, high-$\beta$ collisionless plasmas. This is accomplished through a combination of analytical theory and numerical fluid simulations of the Chew–Goldberger–Low (CGL) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations closed by Landau-fluid heat fluxes. An asymptotic ordering is employed to simplify the CGL-MHD equations and derive solutions for the deformation of an Alfvén wave that results from its interaction with the pressure anisotropy generated either by an ion-acoustic wave or another, larger-amplitude Alfvén wave. The difference in time scales of acoustic and Alfvénic fluctuations at high-$\beta$ means that interactions that are local in wavenumber space yield little modification to either mode within the time it takes the acoustic wave to Landau damp away. Instead, order-unity changes in the amplitude of Alfvénic fluctuations can result after interacting with frequency-matched acoustic waves. Additionally, we show that the propagation speed of an Alfvén-wave packet in an otherwise homogeneous background is a function of its self-generated pressure anisotropy. This allows for the eventual interaction of separate co-propagating Alfvén-wave packets of differing amplitudes. The results of the CGL-MHD simulations agree well with these predictions, suggesting that theoretical models relying on the interaction of these modes should be reconsidered in certain astrophysical environments. Applications of these results to weak Alfvénic turbulence and to the interaction between the compressive and Alfvénic cascades in strong, collisionless turbulence are also discussed.

Spontaneous avalanche to plasma begins in the core of an ellipsoidal Rydberg gas of nitric oxide. Ambipolar expansion of NO$^+$ draws energy from avalanche-heated electrons. Then, cycles of long-range resonant electron transfer from Rydberg molecules to ions equalize their relative velocities. This sequence of steps gives rise to a remarkable mechanics of self-assembly, in which the kinetic energy of initially formed hot electrons and ions drives an observed separation of plasma volumes. These dynamics adiabatically sequester energy in a reservoir of mass transport, starting a process that anneals separating volumes to form an apparent glass of strongly coupled ions and electrons. Short-time electron spectroscopy provides experimental evidence for complete ionization. The long lifetime of this system, particularly its stability with respect to recombination and neutral dissociation, suggests that this transformation affords a robust state of arrested relaxation, far from thermal equilibrium. We see this most directly in the excitation spectrum of transitions to states in the initially selected Rydberg series, detected as the long-lived signal that survives a flight time of $500\ \mathrm {\mu }$s to reach an imaging detector. The initial density of electrons produced by prompt Penning ionization, which varies with the selected initial principal quantum number and density of the Rydberg gas, determines a balance between the rising density of ions and the falling density of Rydberg molecules. This Penning-regulated ion-Rydberg molecule balance appears necessary as a critical factor in achieving the long ultracold plasma lifetime to produce spectral features detected after very long delays.

Electron-cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) is the main heating mechanism in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. Although second-harmonic ECRH (X2) has been used routinely for plasma startup, startup at third harmonic (X3) is known to be much more difficult. In this work, we investigate the energy gain of particles during nonlinear wave–particle interaction for conditions relevant to second- and third-harmonic startups in W7-X. We take into account both the beam and the ambient magnetic field inhomogeneities. The latter is shown to significantly increase the mean energy gain resulting from a single wave–particle resonant interaction. In W7-X-like conditions, the improvement in maximum gained energy is up to 4 times the analogous uniform magnetic field case. However, this improvement is not enough to ensure X3 startup. The optimal magnetic field inhomogeneity length scale for average energy gain and start up in W7-X-like conditions is found to be in the range of $1$ to $3\ {\rm km}^{-1}$. A possibility of using multiple beams with neighbouring resonances is also considered. A considerable enhancement of the energy gain is demonstrated.
