The problem of the assimilation of a cryogenic fuel pellet injected into a hot plasma is considered. Due to the transparency to ambient particles of the plasmoid, the localised region of high-density plasma created by ionisation of the ablated pellet material, electrons reach a ‘quasiequilibrium’ (QE) state which is characterised by a steady-state on the fastest collisional time scale. The simplified electron kinetic equation of the QE state is solved. Taking a velocity moment of the higher-order electron kinetic equation, which is valid on the expansion time scale, permits a fluid closure, yielding an evolution equation for the macroscopic parameters describing the QE distribution function. In contrast to the Braginskii equations, the closure does not require that electrons have a short mean free path compared with the size of density perturbations, and permits an anisotropic and highly non-Maxwellian distribution function. As the QE distribution function accounts for both trapped and passing electrons, the self-consistent electric potential that causes the expansion can be properly described, in contrast to earlier models of pellet plasmoid expansion with an unbounded potential. The plasmoid expansion is simulated using both a Vlasov model and a cold-fluid model for the ions. During the expansion plasmoid ions and electrons obtain nearly equal amounts of energy; as hot ambient electrons provide this energy in the form of collisional heating of plasmoid electrons, the expansion of a pellet plasmoid is expected to be a potent mechanism for the transfer of energy from electrons to ions on a time scale shorter than that of ion–electron thermalisation.

Collisions are an important dissipation mechanism in plasmas. When approximating collision operators numerically, it is important to preserve their mathematical structure in order to retain the laws of thermodynamics at the discrete level. This is particularly challenging when considering particle methods. A simple but commonly used collision operator is the Lenard–Bernstein operator, or its modified energy- and momentum-conserving counterpart. In this work, we present a macro-particle discretisation of this operator that is provably energy and momentum preserving.

Linearized gravity around a rotating black hole or compact object introduces the concept of a gravitomagnetic field, which originates from the matter–current in the rotating object. Plasma in proximity to this object is subsequently subjected to motion guided by this gravitomagnetic term (where mass serves as the effective charge) in addition to the conventional magnetic field. Such an interplay of fields complicates the accessible plasma waves of the system and thus merits exploration to delineate this interplay, to identify any observable signatures of the gravitomagnetic field in weakly magnetized systems, and to motivate future numerical work in a fully relativistic setting where the effects may be stronger. In this work we analyse the dispersion of the upper and lower hybrid electrostatic waves in a plasma immersed in both magnetic and gravitomagnetic fields. In particular, we discuss the effective augmentation or cancellation of the two fields under the right conditions for the upper hybrid wave. In contrast, the lower hybrid wave experiences a frequency up-shift from the gravitomagnetic field regardless of whether it is parallel or antiparallel to the magnetic field for the studied field strengths.

The Okubo–Weiss (Okubo, Deep-Sea Res., vol. 17, issue 3, 1970, pp. 445–454; Weiss, Physica D, vol. 48, issue 2, 1991, pp. 273–294) criterion has been widely used as a diagnostic tool to divide a two-dimensional (2-D) hydrodynamical flow field into hyperbolic and elliptic regions. This paper considers extension of these ideas to 2-D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows, and presents an Okubo–Weiss-type criterion to parameterize the magnetic field topology in 2-D MHD flows. This ensues via its topological connections with the intrinsic metric properties of the underlying magnetic flux manifold, and is illustrated by recasting the Okubo–Weiss-type criterion via the 2-D MHD stationary generalized Alfvénic state condition to approximate the slow-flow-variation ansatz imposed in its derivation. The Okubo–Weiss-type parameter then turns out to be related to the sign definiteness of the Gaussian curvature of the magnetic flux manifold. A similar formulation becomes possible for 2-D electron MHD flows, by using the generalized magnetic flux framework to incorporate the electron-inertia effects. Numerical simulations of quasi-stationary vortices in 2-D MHD flows in the decaying turbulence regime are then given to demonstrate that the Okubo–Weiss-type criterion is able to separate the MHD flow field into elliptic and hyperbolic field configurations very well.

We present the results of numerical simulation by two-dimensional hybrid particle-in-cell code of high-beta plasma with hot ions in an axisymmetric mirror machine. Two particular effects are discussed: the self-rotating of plasma with Maxwellian ions in regime of diamagnetic confinement and the excitation of axisymmetric magnetosonic waves in a high-beta plasma with sloshing ions.

Large-amplitude current-driven plasma instabilities, which can transition to the Buneman instability, were observed in one-dimensional simulations to generate high-energy back-streaming ions. We investigate the saturation of multi-dimensional plasma instabilities and its effects on energetic ion formation. Such ions directly impact spacecraft thruster lifetimes and are associated with magnetic reconnection and cosmic ray inception. An Eulerian Vlasov–Poisson solver employing the grid-based direct kinetic method is used to study the growth and saturation of 2D2V collisionless, electrostatic current-driven instabilities spanning two dimensions each in the configuration (D) and velocity (V) spaces supporting ion and electron phase-space transport. Four stages characterise the electric potential evolution in such instabilities: linear modal growth, harmonic growth, accelerated growth via quasi-linear mechanisms alongside nonlinear fill-in and saturated turbulence. Its transition and isotropisation process bears considerable similarities to the development of hydrodynamic turbulence. While a tendency to isotropy is observed in the plasma waves, followed by electron and then ion phase spaces after several ion-acoustic periods, the formation of energetic back-streaming ions is more limited in the 2D2V than in the 1D1V simulations. Plasma waves formed by two-dimensional electrostatic kinetic instabilities can propagate in the direction perpendicular to the net electron drift. Thus, large-amplitude multi-dimensional waves generate high-energy transverse-streaming ions and eventually limit energetic backward-streaming ions along the longitudinal direction. The multi-dimensional study sheds light on interactions between longitudinal and transverse electrostatic plasma instabilities, as well as fundamental characteristics of the inception and sustenance of unmagnetised plasma turbulence.

Collisionless charged particle motion and its transport in the two-wire model (TWM) with no axial magnetic fields is investigated numerically. The TWM configuration contains a magnetic X-point, and single particle motions in such a field have two conserved quantities: the total kinetic energy and the base field line value which is a quantity derived from the axial canonical momentum. As gyrating particles travel along the field lines, they may reach near the X-point region where the magnetic moment, the first adiabatic invariant, can be occasionally shifted due to a large gradient of the field. When the magnetic moment becomes large, resulting in a large Larmor radius, particles probabilistically cross the X-point to migrate to the opposite side of the TWM configuration. These phenomena are investigated with single particle simulations. We find that the statistical behaviour of the seemingly chaotic magnetic moment shifts are completely determined by the two aforementioned conserved quantities, and also that there exists a threshold energy, determined by the base field line value, allowing only particles with a higher energy to cross the separatrix and migrate. It is found that the crossing time is distributed exponentially, and that the migration confinement time, which is the average crossing time, is shorter for particles with a base field line closer to the separatrix and a higher energy. We provide an empirical expression, derived with the simulations, for estimating the collisionless migration confinement time.

The self-consistent propagation of electrical impulses and of the accompanying distortions of the electron surface in the framework of a cold plasma model with a sharp boundary has been described with help of a derived system of two equations. The method of ‘shallow water theory’ has been applied for the case of bounded plasma and deriving an equation with which to link the spatial and temporal structures and evolution of the boundary curvature and the surface charge. Under certain conditions, such perturbations can propagate along the boundary without changing their shape for a long distance. An approximate analytical solution has been found, and numerical calculations have been performed. Mutual connections between basic parameters of the considered perturbations (velocity components, electrostatic field, etc.) have been presented.

The impact of an edge radial electric field on the particle orbits and the orbital spectrum in an axisymmetric toroidal magnetic equilibrium is investigated using a guiding centre canonical formalism. Poloidal and bounce/transit-averaged toroidal precession frequencies are calculated, highlighting the role of the radial electric field. The radial electric field is shown to drastically modify the resonance conditions between particles with certain kinetic characteristics and specific perturbative non-axisymmetric modes, and to enable the formation of transport barriers. The locations of the resonances and the transport barriers that determine the particle, energy and momentum transport are shown to be accurately pinpointed in the phase space by employing the calculated orbital frequencies.

An open problem of the derivation of the relativistic Vlasov equation for systems of charged particles moving with velocities up to the speed of light and creating the electromagnetic field in accordance with the full set of the Maxwell equations is considered. Moreover, the method of derivation is illustrated on the non-relativistic kinetic model. Independent derivation of the relativistic hydrodynamics is also demonstrated. The key role of these derivations of the hydrodynamic and kinetic equations includes the explicit operator of averaging on the physically infinitesimal volume suggested by L.S. Kuzmenkov.

The extended guiding-centre Lagrangian equations of motion are derived by the Lie-transform perturbation method under the assumption of time-dependent and inhomogeneous electric and magnetic fields that satisfy the standard guiding-centre space–time orderings. Polarization effects are introduced into the Lagrangian dynamics by the inclusion of the polarization drift velocity in the guiding-centre velocity and the appearance of finite-Larmor-radius corrections in the guiding-centre Hamiltonian and guiding-centre Poisson bracket.

Spontaneous avalanche to plasma begins in the core of an ellipsoidal Rydberg gas of nitric oxide. Ambipolar expansion of NO$^+$ draws energy from avalanche-heated electrons. Then, cycles of long-range resonant electron transfer from Rydberg molecules to ions equalize their relative velocities. This sequence of steps gives rise to a remarkable mechanics of self-assembly, in which the kinetic energy of initially formed hot electrons and ions drives an observed separation of plasma volumes. These dynamics adiabatically sequester energy in a reservoir of mass transport, starting a process that anneals separating volumes to form an apparent glass of strongly coupled ions and electrons. Short-time electron spectroscopy provides experimental evidence for complete ionization. The long lifetime of this system, particularly its stability with respect to recombination and neutral dissociation, suggests that this transformation affords a robust state of arrested relaxation, far from thermal equilibrium. We see this most directly in the excitation spectrum of transitions to states in the initially selected Rydberg series, detected as the long-lived signal that survives a flight time of $500\ \mathrm {\mu }$s to reach an imaging detector. The initial density of electrons produced by prompt Penning ionization, which varies with the selected initial principal quantum number and density of the Rydberg gas, determines a balance between the rising density of ions and the falling density of Rydberg molecules. This Penning-regulated ion-Rydberg molecule balance appears necessary as a critical factor in achieving the long ultracold plasma lifetime to produce spectral features detected after very long delays.

Angular momentum coupling between a rotating magnetized plasma and torsional Alfvén waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) is examined. It is demonstrated not only that rotation is the source of Fresnel–Faraday rotation – or orbital Faraday rotation effects – for OAM-carrying Alfvén waves, but also that angular momentum from an OAM-carrying Alfvén wave can be transferred to a rotating plasma through the inverse process. For the direct process, the transverse structure angular rotation frequency is derived by considering the dispersion relation for modes with opposite OAM content. For the inverse process, the torque exerted on the plasma is derived as a function of wave and plasma parameters.

Fishbone bursts have been observed to strongly correlate to internal transport barrier (ITB) formation in a number of tokamak devices. A simple model incorporating the fishbone dynamics and ion pressure gradient evolution is proposed in order to investigate the key physics parameters assisting the triggering of ITB. The time evolution of fishbone is described by the well-known predator–prey model. For each burst cycle, the energetic particles (EPs) resonantly interact with fishbone and are radially expelled from inner region leading to a radial current. A compensating bulk plasma return current and, hence, poloidal flow can be induced if the fishbone cycle frequency is greater than the poloidal flow damping rate. When the shear of the poloidal flow exceeds a critical value, the turbulent fluctuations are suppressed and the bulk ion pressure gradient transits to the high-confinement state. It is shown that this process is only sensitive to the deposition rate of the trapped EPs within the $q=1$ surface, but not sensitive to other parameters. A quantitative formula for the shearing rate of poloidal flow induced by fishbone bursts is derived and verified numerically.

The Hamiltonian dynamics of a single particle in a rotating plasma column, interacting with an magnetic multipole is perturbatively solved for up to second order, using the method of Lie transformations. First, the exact Hamiltonian is expressed in terms of canonical action-angle variables, and then an approximate integrable Hamiltonian is introduced, using another set of actions and angles, which describe the centre of oscillation for the particle. The perturbation introduces an effective ponderomotive potential, which to leading order is positive. At the second order, the pseudopotential consists of a sum of terms of the Miller form, and can have either sign. Additionally, at second order, the ponderomotive interaction introduces a modification to the particle effective mass, when considering the motion along the column axis. It is found that particles can be axially confined by the ponderomotive potentials, but acquire radial excursions which scale as the confining potential. The radial excursions of the particle along its trajectory are investigated, and a condition for the minimal rotation frequency for which the particle remains radially confined is derived. Last, we comment on the changes to the aforementioned solution to the pseudopotentials and particle trajectory in the case of resonant motion, that is, a motion which has the same periodicity as the perturbation.

Thanks to the isomorphism between the drift-Poisson and Euler equations, inviscid two-dimensional fluid experiments can be performed in magnetized, single-component plasmas in Penning–Malmberg traps. Within this analogy, a trapped electron plasma column is equivalent to a two-dimensional vortex. Here, we focus our attention on the generation of V-states, i.e. $l$-fold symmetric rotating vorticity patches where the deformation with respect to the circular cross-section has reached the nonlinear regime. We detail a linear theoretical analysis and devise an experimental routine to generate V-states through the precise excitation of single Kelvin–Helmholtz perturbations in a magnetized electron plasma. This technique makes use of suitable multipolar rotating electric fields, which are shown to be able to select the desired wavemode. In particular, with rotating fields, a hardware limitation in the highest accessible mode is removed and nonlinear Kelvin–Helmholtz waves of generic order $l$ can be attained, which pave the way for further investigations on the evolution and stability properties of V-states. Systematic experimental results for the selective mode growth in the linear and nonlinear regimes up to saturation and collapse are discussed.

If the electrons in a plasma are suddenly heated, the resulting change in Debye shielding causes the ion kinetic energy to quickly increase. For the first time, this correlation heating, which is much faster than collisional energy exchange, is rigorously derived for a moderately coupled, electron–ion plasma. The electron–ion mass ratio is taken to be the smallest parameter in the Bogoliubov–Born–Green–Kirkwood–Yvon hierarchy, smaller even than the reciprocal of the plasma parameter. This ordering differs from conventional kinetic theory by making the electron collision rates faster than the ion plasma frequency, which allows stronger coupling and makes the ion heating a function only of the total energy supplied to the electrons. The calculation uses known formulae for correlations in a two-temperature plasma, for which a new, elementary derivation is presented. Suprathermal ions may be created more rapidly by this mechanism than by ion–electron Coulomb collisions. This means that the use of a femtosecond laser pulse could potentially help to achieve ignition in certain fast ignition approaches to inertial confinement fusion.

A collisionless plasma possesses a certain amount of ‘available energy’, which is that part of the thermal energy that can be converted into kinetic energy of plasma motion and electromagnetic fluctuations. In this paper we present a calculation of the available energy carried by trapped electrons in a slender non-omnigenous flux tube of plasma. This quantity is compared with gyrokinetic simulations of the nonlinear saturated radial energy flux resulting from turbulence driven by collisionless trapped-electron modes in various stellarators and a tokamak. The numerical calculation of available energy is fast and shows a strong correlation with the turbulent energy fluxes found in the gyrokinetic simulations. Indeed, the energy flux is found to be proportional to the available energy to the power of approximately $3/2$, which is what one would expect from a simple argument. We furthermore investigate how available energy is distributed across different bounce wells, and it is found that deeply trapped electrons typically contribute most to the available energy. Finally, we investigate the dependence of available energy on gradient strength, and we find important differences between weakly and strongly driven regimes for stellarators and tokamaks.

We present a quasi-linear treatment of the drift-kinetic equation in the presence of a stochastic magnetic field, which provides a self-contained description of particle, parallel momentum and heat transport. Explicit analytical expressions, which satisfy the Onsager reciprocal relations, are obtained by approximating the distribution function by a local shifted Maxwellian. This theory completes previous formulations (Harvey et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 47, 1981, p. 102) by including the momentum transport and by generalizing the derivation from the cylindrical tokamak configuration to an arbitrary cylindrical pinch. Application to the reversed field pinch provides satisfactory results.

An approximate model for pure electron plasma compression is developed for the case where the rotating wall (RW) electric field couples to the $E\times B$ rotation and axial bounce motion of the electrons. The key assumption in the model is that, throughout the compression, the plasma remains in a slowly evolving thermal equilibrium defined by the plasma temperature and angular momentum. Linearized drift kinetic theory is employed to derive an expression for torque exerted by the RW field on the plasma through coupling to the resonant plasma particles, and averaging is used to find the torque that both compresses and heats the plasma. The evolution equations for the angular velocity and temperature of the plasma include the compression and heating from the torque and cooling from cyclotron radiation.
