21-cm cosmology is a powerful new probe of the intergalactic medium at redshifts 20 ≳ z ≳ 6 corresponding to the Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization. Current observations of the highly-redshifted 21-cm transition are limited by the dynamic range they can achieve against foreground sources of low-frequency (<200 MHz) of radio emission. We used the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Long Wavelength Array (OVRO-LWA) to generate a series of new modern high-fidelity sky maps that capture emission on angular scales ranging from tens of degrees to ∼15 arcmin, and frequencies between 36 and 73 MHz. These sky maps were generated from the application of Tikhonov-regularized m-mode analysis imaging, which is a new interferometric imaging technique that is uniquely suited for low-frequency, wide-field, drift-scanning interferometers.

Foreground contamination is one of the most important limiting factors in detecting the neutral hydrogen in the epoch of reionisation. These foregrounds can be roughly split into galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. In these proceedings we highlight information that can be gleaned from multi-wavelength extragalactic surveys in order to overcome this issue. We discuss how clustering information from the lower-redshift, foreground galaxies, can be used as additional information in accounting for the noise associated with the foregrounds. We then go on to highlight the expected contribution of future optical and near-infrared surveys for detecting the galaxies responsible for ionising the Universe. We suggest that these galaxies can also be used to reduce the systematics in the 21-cm epoch of reionisation signal through cross-correlations if enough common area is surveyed.

Next-generation 21cm observations will enable imaging of reionization on very large scales. These images will contain more astrophysical and cosmological information than the power spectrum, and hence providing an alternative way to constrain the contribution of different reionizing sources populations to cosmic reionization. Using Convolutional Neural Networks, we present a simple network architecture that is sufficient to discriminate between Galaxy-dominated versus AGN-dominated models, even in the presence of simulated noise from different experiments such as the HERA and SKA.

The formation of direct collapse black hole seeds with masses ~104 − 105 ~M⊙ could help explain the assembly of supermassive black holes powering high redshift quasars. Conditions conducive to the formation of these massive initial seeds exist at high redshift. Halos hosting these massive seeds merge promptly with a nearby galaxy. These early stage mergers at high redshift produce a new class of transient galaxies that contain an accreting black hole that is over-massive compared to the newly acquired stellar component - Obese Black hole Galaxies (OBGs). During this phase, the accretion luminosity of the direct collapse black hole seed exceeds that of the acquired stellar component. Here we calculate the multi-wavelength spectrum of this short-lived OBG stage, and show that there exist unique observational signatures in long wavelengths spanning near, mid to far-infrared that should be detectable by instruments aboard the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Cold molecular and atomic gas plays a central role in our understanding of early galaxy formation and evolution. It represents the component of the interstellar medium (ISM) that stars form out of, and its mass, distribution, excitation, and dynamics provide crucial insight into the physical processes that support the ongoing star formation and stellar mass buildup. We here present results that demonstrate the capability of the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA) to detect the cold ISM and dust in “normal” galaxies at redshifts z=5–6. We also show detailed studies of the ISM in massive, dust-obscured starburst galaxies out to z>6 with ALMA, the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI), and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). These observations place some of the most direct constraints on the dust-obscured fraction of the star formation history of the universe at z>5 to date, showing that “typical” galaxies at these epochs have low dust content, but also that highly-enriched, dusty starbursts already exist within the first billion years after the Big Bang.

A new spin wavelet transform on the sphere is proposed to analyse the polarisation of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), a spin ± 2 signal observed on the celestial sphere. The scalar directional scale-discretised wavelet transform on the sphere is extended to analyse signals of arbitrary spin. The resulting spin scale-discretised wavelet transform probes the directional intensity of spin signals. A procedure is presented using this new spin wavelet transform to recover E- and B-mode signals from partial-sky observations of CMB polarisation.

The presence of multiple fields during inflation might seed a detectable amount of non-Gaussianity in the curvature perturbations, which in turn becomes observable in present data sets like the cosmic microwave background (CMB) or the large scale structure (LSS). Within this proceeding we present a fully analytic method to infer inflationary parameters from observations by exploiting higher-order statistics of the curvature perturbations. To keep this analyticity, and thereby to dispense with numerically expensive sampling techniques, a saddle-point approximation is introduced whose precision has been validated for a numerical toy example. Applied to real data, this approach might enable to discriminate among the still viable models of inflation.

We present the identifications of two z ~ 3·8 quasars from a deep UBI imaging survey with the Palomar 5·1 m Telescope. The survey covers an area of 0·25 degree2 around a sample of ten z =0·2–0·3 luminous X-ray clusters. The QSOs were identified on the basis of their stellar morphologies, relatively blue optical and very red UV–optical colours. The two objects are Q 1322+5034, with total magnitudes of B =20·8, I =18·3 and (U–B) > 4·7, and Q 1722+3211, which has total magnitudes of B =21·8, I =19·7 and (U–B) > 3·2. Subsequent spectroscopic observations with the 4·2 m William Herschel Telescope have confirmed the identity of these two sources as QSOs at z =3·82 and z =3·73 respectively. Our spectroscopic observations identify a damped Lyman-α absorber in the spectrum of Q 1322+5034 at z =3·439, as well as a second absorption system at z =2·700, which may be either a single very high column density, damped Lyman-α system, or more likely a blend of a number of high column-density absorbers spread over a distance of ~10 Mpc.

The Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope is the next generation radio telescope. An international project is currently under way to design and build an instrument having an effective collecting area two orders of magnitude greater than that of any existing telescope. A number of separate studies are presently investigating how to design the Square Kilometre Array to best carry out the kinds of observations desired by the astronomical community. We present a summary of one of these studies, a workshop called The ‘Sub-microJansky Radio Sky’ held at the ATNF, Sydney, on 17 June 1998. This workshop addressed the nature of the radio sky at the very faint flux densities likely to be attainable by the Square Kilometre Array. In particular, each speaker investigated a separate population of radio sources and how the expected appearance of that population at such faint flux densities would dictate how to refine some of the design constraints for the Square Kilometre Array.

Below [Fe/H] = −3.0, there is an enormous range in [C/Fe]. We discuss the properties of C-rich ([C/Fe] > +0.7) and C-normal ([C/Fe] ≤ +0.7) stars in this regime, and suggest that there existed two different gas cooling channels in the very early Universe.

Several statistical studies - done also by the authors of this contribution - show that there are three subclasses of gamma-ray bursts. They can be called as short, intermediate and long ones, because they can be separated with respect to their durations. The short and intermediate bursts are distributed anisotropically on the sky. This behavior is highly remarkable, and can have a cardinal impact on the cosmology. The subject of this contribution is a survey of this topic.

New low frequency radio telescopes currently being built open up the possibility of observing the 21 cm radiation from redshifts 200 > z > 30, also known as the dark ages, see Furlanetto, Oh, & Briggs(2006) for a review. At these high redshifts, Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation is absorbed by neutral hydrogen at its 21 cm hyperfine transition. This redshifted 21 cm signal thus carries information about the state of the early Universe and can be used to test fundamental physics. The 21 cm radiation probes a volume of the early Universe on kpc scales in contrast with CMB which probes a surface (of some finite thickness) on Mpc scales. Thus there is many orders of more information available, in principle, from the 21 cm observations of dark ages. We have studied the constraints these observations can put on the variation of fundamental constants (Khatri & Wandelt(2007)). Since the 21 cm signal depends on atomic physics it is very sensitive to the variations in the fine structure constant and can place constraints comparable to or better than the other astrophysical experiments (Δα/α= < 10−5) as shown in Figure 1. Making such observations will require radio telescopes of collecting area 10 - 106 km2 compared to ~ 1 km2 of current telescopes, for example LOFAR. We should also expect similar sensitivity to the electron to proton mass ratio. One of the challenges in observing this 21 cm cosmological signal is the presence of the synchrotron foregrounds which is many orders of magnitude larger than the cosmological signal but the two can be separated because of their different statistical nature (Zaldarriaga, Furlanetto, & Hernquist(2004)). Terrestrial EM interference from radio/TV etc. and Earth&s ionosphere poses problems for telescopes on ground which may be solved by going to the Moon and there are proposals for doing so, one of which is the Dark Ages Lunar Interferometer (DALI). In conclusion 21 cm cosmology promises a large wealth of data and provides the only way to observe the redshift range between recombination and reionization.

During its early evolution the Universe provided a laboratory to probe fundamental physics at high energies. Relics from those early epochs, such as the light elements synthesized during primordial nucleosynthesis when the Universe was only a few minutes old, and the cosmic background photons, last scattered when the protons (and alphas) and electrons (re)combined some 400 thousand years later, may be used to probe the standard models of cosmology and of particle physics. The internal consistency of primordial nucleosynthesis is tested by comparing the predicted and observed abundances of the light elements, and the consistency of the standard models is explored by comparing the values of the cosmological parameters inferred from primordial nucleosynthesis with those determined by studying the cosmic background radiation.

We study effects of relic long-lived strongly interacting massive particles (X particles) on big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The X particle is assumed to have existed during the BBN epoch, but decayed long before detected. The interaction strength between an X and a nucleon is assumed to be similar to that between nucleons. Rates of nuclear reactions and beta decay of X-nuclei are calculated, and the BBN in the presence of neutral charged X0 particles is calculated taking account of captures of X0 by nuclei. As a result, the X0 particles form bound states with normal nuclei during a relatively early epoch of BBN leading to the production of heavy elements. Constraints on the abundance of X0 are derived from observations of primordial light element abundances. Particle models which predict long-lived colored particles with lifetimes longer than ~200 s are rejected. This scenario prefers the production of 9Be and 10B. There might, therefore, remain a signature of the X particle on primordial abundances of those elements. Possible signatures left on light element abundances expected in four different models are summarized.

The long gamma-ray bursts are at high redshifts, and they trace the star-formation rate. Hence, they may well serve as milestones in the early Universe.

We study the evolution of the first stars in the universe (Population III) from the early pre–Main Sequence (MS) until the end of helium burning in the presence of WIMP dark matter annihilation inside the stellar structure. The two different mechanisms that can provide this energy source are the contemporary contraction of baryons and dark matter, and the capture of WIMPs by scattering off the gas with subsequent accumulation inside the star. We find that the first mechanism can generate an equilibrium phase, previously known as a dark star, which is transient and present in the very early stages of pre–MS evolution. The mechanism of scattering and capture acts later, and can support the star virtually forever, depending on environmental characteristics of the dark matter halo and on the specific WIMP model.

Main results from a study of extremely metal-poor stars are briefly summarised.

Understanding the energy and matter content of the Universe and its evolution are key goals for the international astronomical community and all extremely large telescope projects. ELTs will bring a wide range of tools to bear on questions relating to the nature of dark energy and the formation and early evolution of galaxies. Natural seeing and ground-layer corrected instruments on ELTs will quantify the assembly of galaxies at modest redshifts, while near-IR diffraction-limited instruments will probe the internal structure of early galaxies and the epoch of first light and reionization.

Recent spectroscopic observation of $z=6.3$ GRB 050904 is reported with an emphasis on the importance of making similar prompt spectroscopy for long burst GRB events yet to come. A preliminary result of a survey for $z\sim7.0$ Lyman $\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) using a narrow band filter NBF973 is also presented.

The pioneering observations of Spite & Spite showed lithium abundances in halo dwarfs to be almost uniform, irrespective of metallicity and mass over a range of effective temperatures from $\sim$5600 K up to the main-sequence turnoff. They inferred that the observed abundance was “hardly altered” from that produced in the hot Big Bang. Subsequent efforts have endeavoured to determine how small or large “hardly” could be. Simplistic arguments based on the uniformity of the Spite plateau suggest there should only be a small difference between the Big Bang lithium abundance and the observationally inferred plateau value, whereas more physical lines of reasoning suggest the difference could be more substantial. This review paper discusses observational and theoretical developments.
