Erdős proved that every real number is the sum of two Liouville numbers. A set W of complex numbers is said to have the Erdős property if every real number is the sum of two members of W. Mahler divided the set of all transcendental numbers into three disjoint classes S, T and U such that, in particular, any two complex numbers which are algebraically dependent lie in the same class. The set of Liouville numbers is a proper subset of the set U and has Lebesgue measure zero. It is proved here, using a theorem of Weil on locally compact groups, that if $m\in [0,\infty )$, then there exist $2^{\mathfrak {c}}$ dense subsets W of S each of Lebesgue measure m such that W has the Erdős property and no two of these W are homeomorphic. It is also proved that there are $2^{\mathfrak {c}}$ dense subsets W of S each of full Lebesgue measure, which have the Erdős property. Finally, it is proved that there are $2^{\mathfrak {c}}$ dense subsets W of S such that every complex number is the sum of two members of W and such that no two of these W are homeomorphic.

We introduce a pointwise variant of the Assouad dimension for measures on metric spaces, and study its properties in relation to the global Assouad dimension. We show that, in general, the value of the pointwise Assouad dimension may differ from the global counterpart, but in many classical cases, the pointwise Assouad dimension exhibits similar exact dimensionality properties as the classical local dimension, namely it equals the global Assouad dimension almost everywhere. We also prove an explicit formula for the Assouad dimension of certain invariant measures with place-dependent probabilities supported on self-conformal sets.

For $1\le p <\infty $ , we present a reflexive Banach space $\mathfrak {X}^{(p)}_{\text {awi}}$ , with an unconditional basis, that admits $\ell _p$ as a unique asymptotic model and does not contain any Asymptotic $\ell _p$ subspaces. Freeman et al., Trans. AMS. 370 (2018), 6933–6953 have shown that whenever a Banach space not containing $\ell _1$ , in particular a reflexive Banach space, admits $c_0$ as a unique asymptotic model, then it is Asymptotic $c_0$ . These results provide a complete answer to a problem posed by Halbeisen and Odell [Isr. J. Math. 139 (2004), 253–291] and also complete a line of inquiry of the relation between specific asymptotic structures in Banach spaces, initiated in a previous paper by the first and fourth authors. For the definition of $\mathfrak {X}^{(p)}_{\text {awi}}$ , we use saturation with asymptotically weakly incomparable constraints, a new method for defining a norm that remains small on a well-founded tree of vectors which penetrates any infinite dimensional closed subspace.

A thin set is defined to be an uncountable dense zero-dimensional subset of measure zero and Hausdorff measure zero of an Euclidean space. A fat set is defined to be an uncountable dense path-connected subset of an Euclidean space which has full measure, that is, its complement has measure zero. While there are well-known pathological maps of a set of measure zero, such as the Cantor set, onto an interval, we show that the standard addition on $\mathbb {R}$ maps a thin set onto a fat set; in fact the fat set is all of $\mathbb {R}$ . Our argument depends on the theorem of Paul Erdős that every real number is a sum of two Liouville numbers. Our thin set is the set $\mathcal {L}^{2}$ , where $\mathcal {L}$ is the set of all Liouville numbers, and the fat set is $\mathbb {R}$ itself. Finally, it is shown that $\mathcal {L}$ and $\mathcal {L}^{2}$ are both homeomorphic to $\mathbb {P}$ , the space of all irrational numbers.

As pointed out by Alexandre Bailleul, the paper mentioned in the title contains a mistake in Theorem 2.2. The hypothesis on the linear relation of the almost periods is not sufficient. In this note, we fix the problem and its minor consequences on other results in the same paper.

We generalize current known distribution results on Shanks–Rényi prime number races to the case where arbitrarily many residue classes are involved. Our method handles both the classical case that goes back to Chebyshev and function field analogues developed in the recent years. More precisely, let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}(x;q,a)$ be the number of primes up to $x$ that are congruent to $a$ modulo $q$. For a fixed integer $q$ and distinct invertible congruence classes $a_{0},a_{1},\ldots ,a_{D}$, assuming the generalized Riemann Hypothesis and a weak version of the linear independence hypothesis, we show that the set of real $x$ for which the inequalities $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}(x;q,a_{0})>\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}(x;q,a_{1})>\cdots >\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}(x;q,a_{D})$ are simultaneously satisfied admits a logarithmic density.

In analogy with the lower Assouad dimensions of a set, we study the lower Assouad dimensions of a measure. As with the upper Assouad dimensions, the lower Assouad dimensions of a measure provide information about the extreme local behaviour of the measure. We study the connection with other dimensions and with regularity properties. In particular, the quasi-lower Assouad dimension is dominated by the infimum of the measure’s lower local dimensions. Although strict inequality is possible in general, equality holds for the class of self-similar measures of finite type. This class includes all self-similar, equicontractive measures satisfying the open set condition, as well as certain “overlapping” self-similar measures, such as Bernoulli convolutions with contraction factors that are inverses of Pisot numbers.

We give lower bounds for the lower Assouad dimension for measures arising from a Moran construction, prove that self-affine measures are uniformly perfect and have positive lower Assouad dimension, prove that the Assouad spectrum of a measure converges to its quasi-Assouad dimension and show that coincidence of the upper and lower Assouad dimension of a measure does not imply that the measure is s-regular.

The class of stochastically self-similar sets contains many famous examples of random sets, for example, Mandelbrot percolation and general fractal percolation. Under the assumption of the uniform open set condition and some mild assumptions on the iterated function systems used, we show that the quasi-Assouad dimension of self-similar random recursive sets is almost surely equal to the almost sure Hausdorff dimension of the set. We further comment on random homogeneous and V -variable sets and the removal of overlap conditions.

The general properties of lattice-perfect measures are discussed. The relationship between countable compactness and measure perfectness, and the relationship between lattice-measure tightness and lattice-measure perfectness are investigated and several applications in topological measure theory are given.

Problems dealing with certain functional calculi for systems of non-commuting operators, and ordered calculi for systems of certain types of pseudo-differential operators, can sometimes be treated via the methods of integration with respect to polymeasures. The polymeasures arising in this fashion (called Radon polymeasures) often have additional structure not available in the general theory. This allows for a more extensive class of “integrable” functions than just the product functions allowed in the abstract theory. The purpose here is to further develop special aspects of integration with respect to Radon polymeasures with a particular emphasis on identifying large classes of “integrable” functions.

The statement from the title is proved.

We consider a metric space (X, ρ) of a certain class studied by H. Federer in “Geometric Measure Theory”. Let Ф be any derivation basis on X, which is formed by open balls and is ρ-fine. We show that Ф allows mutual derivation of two arbitrary Borel regular measures on X, which are σ-finite and finite-valued on bounded sets. The proof is based on the so-called De Giorgi property studied in a previous paper.

We present a systematic and self-contained exposition of the generalized Riemann integral in a locally compact Hausdorff space, and we show that it is equivalent to the Perron and variational integrals. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for its equivalence to the Lebesgue integral with respect to a suitably chosen measure.

Cardinal functions of topologies have been extensively studied. Cardinal functions of measures have attracted less interest, perhaps because there are fewer straightforward results which are independent of special axioms. In this paper I consider the “additivity” and “cofinality” of a measure (Definition 1) and show that they can often be calculated in terms of certain fundamental cardinals (Corollary 11 and Theorem 16).

It is shown that hte algebra of regular sets for a finitely additive Borel measure μ on a compact Hausdroff space is a σ-algebra only if it includes the Baire algebra and μ is countably additive onthe σ-algebra of regular sets. Any infinite compact Hausdroff space admits a finitely additive Borel measure whose algebra of regular sets is not a σ-algebra. Although a finitely additive measure with a σ-algebra of regular sets is countably additive on the Baire σ-algebra there are examples of finitely additive extensions of countably additive Baire measures whose regular algebra is not a σ-algebra. We examine the particular case of extensions of Dirac measures. In this context it is shown that all extensions of a {0, 1}-valued countably additive measure from a σ-algebra to a larger σ-algebra are countably additive if and only if the convex set of these extensions is a finite dimensional simplex.

A metric space (X, ρ) is called precompact, if, for every ε > 0, there is a finite ε-cover (a covering by sets of diameter ≤ ε). The space (X, ρ) is separable if for every e there is a countable ε-cover. There should be some in-between condition. We say that (X, ρ) has fine covers, if, for every ε > 0, there exists a countable ε-cover (U1, U2, …), such that the diameter ∂(Ui) tends to zero as i → ∞. In fact, Goodey [1] has related this property to Hausdorff dimension. We show that a space with fine covers need not be σ-precompact and that on any complete metrizable non-σ-compact space X there is a metric ρ* such that (X, ρ*) has no fine cover.

The setting is a compact Hausfroff space ω. The notion of a Walls class of subsets of Ω is defined via strange axioms—axioms whose justification rests with examples such as the collection of regular open sets or the range of a strong lifting. Avarient of Rosenthal' famous lwmma which applies directly to Banach space-valued measures is esablished, and it is used to obtain, in elementary fashion, the following two uniform boundedness principles: (1)The Nikodym Boundedness Theorem. If K is a family of regular Borel vector measures on Ω which is point-wise bounded on every set of a fixed Wells class, then K is uniformly bounded. (2)The Nikodym Covergence Theorem. If {μn} is a sequence of regular Borel vector measures on Ω which is converguent on every set of a fixed Wells class, then the μn are uniformly countably additive, the sequence {μn} is convergent on every Borel subset of Ω and the pointwise limit constitutes a regular Borel measure.
