Malnutrition significantly hampers wound healing processes. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) and Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) in diagnosing malnutrition and predicting wound healing in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). GLIM criteria were evaluated for sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP), positive predictive value, negative predictive value and kappa (κ) against SGA as the reference. Modified Poisson regression model and the DeLong test investigated the association between malnutrition and non-healing ulcers over 6 months. This retrospective cohort study included 398 patients with DFU, with a mean age of 66·3 ± 11·9 years. According to SGA and GLIM criteria, malnutrition rates were 50·8 % and 42·7 %, respectively. GLIM criteria showed a SE of 67·3 % (95 % CI 60·4 %, 73·7 %) and SP of 82·7 % (95 % CI 76·6 %, 87·7 %) in identifying malnutrition, with a positive predictive value of 80·0 % and a negative predictive value of 71·1 % (κ = 0·50) compared with SGA. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that malnutrition, as assessed by SGA, was an independent risk factor for non-healing (relative risk (RR) 1·84, 95 % CI 1·45, 2·34), whereas GLIM criteria were associated with poorer ulcer healing in patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate ≥ 60 ml/min/1·73m2 (RR: 1·46, 95 % CI 1·10, 1·94). SGA demonstrated a superior area under the receiver’s operating characteristic curve for predicting non-healing compared with GLIM criteria (0·70 (0·65–0·75) v. 0·63 (0·58–0·65), P < 0·01). These findings suggest that both nutritional assessment tools effectively identify patients with DFU at increased risk, with SGA showing superior performance in predicting non-healing ulcers.

Enhancing seedling quality and promoting root growth post-transplantation are crucial for improving mechanically transplanted rice productivity. Here we investigated the impact of various plant growth regulators on hybrid and conventional rice varieties. Treatments, including two-diethylaminoethyl hexanoate (DA-6, 10 mg L−1), a combination of potassium 3-indole-butyrate + potassium 1-naphthylacetate + 6-benzylaminopurine (C3, 50 + 50 + 10 mg L−1), potassium 3-indole-butyrate + potassium 1-naphthylacetate + 1-triacontanol (C4, 50 + 50 + 50 mg L−1), potassium 3-indole-butyrate + potassium 1-naphthylacetate + 1.8% sodium nitrophenolate (C5, 50 + 50 + 1 mg L−1), and a combination of potassium 3-indole-butyrate + potassium 1-naphthylacetate + 1.8% sodium nitrophenolate + DA-6 (C6, 50 + 50 + 1 + 10 mg L−1), were sprayed either 3 or 10 days before transplanting. Seedlings sprayed 10 days before transplanting exhibited a higher number of white roots and total roots at the returning green stage, along with increased grain yield, irrespective of the plant growth regulator used. The C6 combination emerged as the most effective treatment, enhancing the growth of both hybrid and conventional rice seedlings, accelerating the growth rate of white roots and total roots, and increasing the length of the longest white root during the greening period, ultimately resulting in higher grain yield. Our findings demonstrate that pre-transplantation application of a combination of plant growth regulators positively influences rice seedling growth.

Long-term time series of annual glacier mass balance is important for revealing a glacier's response to regional climate variations. However, for the Tibetan Plateau, time series of annual glacier mass balance with more than 10 consecutive years remains scarce due to the inaccessibility and harsh climate conditions. In this study, we established an albedo-based model to reconstruct annual glacier mass balance for 2000–20 over the Dongkemadi Glacier, based on multitemporal geodetic estimates and annual minimum glacier-wide mean surface albedos. Geodetic glacier mass-balance estimates for 2000–12, 2012–14 and 2014–18 were obtained by comparing glacier surface topographic data. Minimum surface albedos were obtained from the moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer daily snow albedo products for 2000–20. The estimated results are supported by the field measurements of annual glacier mass balance. During the early 2000s, we detected a relatively balanced state of glacier mass change, whereas a pronounced mass loss of more than −0.5 m w.e. was found for most years in the 2010s. By analyzing the regional climate variations with the ERA5-Land monthly averaged data, we found that the accelerated glacier mass loss can be attributed to both decreased annual snowfall and increased summer air temperature.

Objectives: Improper reprocessing of endoscopes may result in healthcare-associated infections. Regular microbiological surveillance is an important means of evaluating the quality of endoscope reprocessing. We evaluated the effectiveness of reprocessing endoscopes (including the protocols on steps to be taken in the event of any positive microbiological results) in a sterile supply unit (SSU) and an endoscopy unit in a Singapore tertiary-care academic hospital. Methods: Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is a 1,750-bed, tertiary-care, academic medical center in Singapore with 2 main SSUs: 1 inpatient endoscopy unit and 1 outpatient endoscopy unit. We reviewed microbiological surveillance results from endoscopes following reprocessing from January 2018 to December 2021. In total, 160 endoscopes (27 bronchoscopes, 58 gastroscopes, 52 colonoscopes, 6 duodenoscopes, 5 echoscopes, 5 cystoscopes, 5 rhinolaryngoscopes, and 5 enteroscopes) and 15 automated endoscope reprocessors (AERs) were evaluated for the presence of microorganisms. Samples were obtained by swabbing the tip of the scope and the biopsy channel. Fluid was flushed from the biopsy channel after reprocessing, and this water from the AERs was sampled after waterline disinfection. Results: Of the 15,783 samples collected, 15,667 (99.3%) yielded no growth; 36 (0.2%) were positive for gut and environmental flora; and 80 (0.5%) were positive for low-concern organisms such as skin flora. Conclusions: Microbiological surveillance yielded a high percentage of negative results confirming the effectiveness of endoscope reprocessing. This quality-assurance process is necessary and beneficial in achieving patient safety.

In this paper, we consider some dividend problems in the perturbed compound Poisson model under a constant barrier dividend strategy. We approximate the expected present value of dividend payments before ruin and the expected discounted penalty function based on the COS method, and construct some nonparametric estimators by using a random sample on claim number and individual claim sizes. Under a large sample size setting, we perform an error analysis of the estimators. We also provide some simulation results to verify the effectiveness of this estimation method when the sample size is finite.

In this paper, the classical compound Poisson model under periodic observation is studied. Different from the random observation assumption widely used in the literature, we suppose that the inter-observation time is a constant. In this model, both the finite-time and infinite-time Gerber-Shiu functions are studied via the Laguerre series expansion method. We show that the expansion coefficients can be recursively determined and also analyze the approximation errors in detail. Numerical results for several claim size density functions are given to demonstrate effectiveness of our method, and the effect of some parameters is also studied.

Motivated by Avram, Vu and Zhou (2017), Kyprianou and Zhou (2009), Li, Vu and Zhou (2017), Wang and Hu (2012), and Wang and Zhou (2018), we consider in this paper the problem of maximizing the expected accumulated discounted tax payments of an insurance company, whose reserve process (before taxes are deducted) evolves as a spectrally negative Lévy process with the usual exclusion of negative subordinator or deterministic drift. Tax payments are collected according to the very general loss-carry-forward tax system introduced in Kyprianou and Zhou (2009). To achieve a balance between taxation optimization and solvency, we consider an interesting modified objective function by considering the expected accumulated discounted tax payments of the company until the general draw-down time, instead of until the classical ruin time. The optimal tax return function and the optimal tax strategy are derived, and some numerical examples are also provided.

The analysis of capital injection strategy in the literature of insurance risk models (e.g. Pafumi, 1998; Dickson and Waters, 2004) typically assumes that whenever the surplus becomes negative, the amount of shortfall is injected so that the company can continue its business forever. Recently, Nie et al. (2011) has proposed an alternative model in which capital is immediately injected to restore the surplus level to a positive level b when the surplus falls between zero and b, and the insurer is still subject to a positive ruin probability. Inspired by the idea of randomized observations in Albrecher et al. (2011b), in this paper, we further generalize Nie et al. (2011)'s model by assuming that capital injections are only allowed at a sequence of time points with inter-capital-injection times being Erlang distributed (so that deterministic time intervals can be approximated using the Erlangization technique in Asmussen et al. (2002)). When the claim amount is distributed as a combination of exponentials, explicit formulas for the Gerber–Shiu expected discounted penalty function (Gerber and Shiu, 1998) and the expected total discounted cost of capital injections before ruin are obtained. The derivations rely on a resolvent density associated with an Erlang random variable, which is shown to admit an explicit expression that is of independent interest as well. We shall provide numerical examples, including an application in pricing a perpetual reinsurance contract that makes the capital injections and demonstration of how to minimize the ruin probability via reinsurance. Minimization of the expected discounted capital injections plus a penalty applied at ruin with respect to the frequency of injections and the critical level b will also be illustrated numerically.

We study the error analysis of the weak Galerkin finite element method in [24, 38] (WG-FEM) for the Helmholtz problem with large wave number in two and three dimensions. Using a modified duality argument proposed by Zhu and Wu, we obtain the pre-asymptotic error estimates of the WG-FEM. In particular, the error estimates with explicit dependence on the wave number k are derived. This shows that the pollution error in the broken H1-norm is bounded by under mesh condition k7/2h2≤C0 or (kh)2+k(kh)p+1≤C0, which coincides with the phase error of the finite element method obtained by existent dispersion analyses. Here h is the mesh size, p is the order of the approximation space and C0 is a constant independent of k and h. Furthermore, numerical tests are provided to verify the theoretical findings and to illustrate the great capability of the WG-FEM in reducing the pollution effect.

The computational work and storage of numerically solving the time fractional PDEs are generally huge for the traditional direct methods since they require total memory and work, where NT and NS represent the total number of time steps and grid points in space, respectively. To overcome this difficulty, we present an efficient algorithm for the evaluation of the Caputo fractional derivative of order α∈(0,1). The algorithm is based on an efficient sum-of-exponentials (SOE) approximation for the kernel t–1–α on the interval [Δt, T] with a uniform absolute error ε. We give the theoretical analysis to show that the number of exponentials Nexp needed is of order for T≫1 or for TH1 for fixed accuracy ε. The resulting algorithm requires only storage and work when numerically solving the time fractional PDEs. Furthermore, we also give the stability and error analysis of the new scheme, and present several numerical examples to demonstrate the performance of our scheme.

This paper is concerned with numerical solutions of the LDG method for 1D wave equations. Superconvergence and energy conserving properties have been studied. We first study the superconvergence phenomenon for linear problems when alternating fluxes are used. We prove that, under some proper initial discretization, the numerical trace of the LDG approximation at nodes, as well as the cell average, converge with an order 2k+1. In addition, we establish k+2-th order and k+1-th order superconvergence rates for the function value error and the derivative error at Radau points, respectively. As a byproduct, we prove that the LDG solution is superconvergent with an order k+2 towards the Radau projection of the exact solution. Numerical experiments demonstrate that in most cases, our error estimates are optimal, i.e., the error bounds are sharp. In the second part, we propose a fully discrete numerical scheme that conserves the discrete energy. Due to the energy conserving property, after long time integration, our method still stays accurate when applied to nonlinear Klein-Gordon and Sine-Gordon equations.

In this paper, the density of the time to ruin is studied in the context of the classical compound Poisson risk model. Both one-dimensional and two-dimensional Fourier-cosine series expansions are used to approximate the density of the time to ruin, and the approximation errors are also obtained. Some numerical examples are also presented to show that the proposed method is very efficient.

A fully discrete discontinuous Galerkin method is introduced for solving time-dependent Maxwell’s equations. Distinguished from the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method (RKDG) and the finite element time domain method (FETD), in our scheme, discontinuous Galerkin methods are used to discretize not only the spatial domain but also the temporal domain. The proposed numerical scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable, and a convergent rate is established under the L2-norm when polynomials of degree atmost r and k are used for temporal and spatial approximation, respectively. Numerical results in both 2-D and 3-D are provided to validate the theoretical prediction. An ultra-convergence of order in time step is observed numerically for the numerical fluxes w.r.t. temporal variable at the grid points.

In this paper we consider a risk model where claims arrive according to a Markovian arrival process (MAP). When the surplus becomes negative or the insurer is in deficit, the insurer could borrow money at a constant debit interest rate to repay the claims. We derive the integro-differential equations satisfied by the discounted penalty functions and discuss the solutions. A matrix renewal equation is obtained for the discounted penalty function provided that the initial surplus is nonnegative. Based on this matrix renewal equation, we present some asymptotic formulae for the discounted penalty functions when the claim size distributions are heavy tailed.

The effect of defects introduced by high-energy electron irradiation on microstructure and properties in poly(vinylidene fluoride- trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] is reported. In studies of the copolymers, it is found that as defect concentration increases, the material can be changed from a normal ferroelectrics to a relaxor ferroelectrics (RFE) and then to a simple relaxor. Correspondingly, the crystalline morphology changes from a coexistence of polar and non-polar phases to a macroscopically uniform non- polar phase, as revealed by x -ray data. It was observed that the dielectric property in the copolymers with a different amount of defects was well described by the Vogel-Fulcher (V-F) relationship. Based on the experimental data, a critical size, which is the smallest size of crystal with ferroelectric phase, of about 5 nm was obtained for the copolymer. The RFE developed here exhibits a massive electrostrictive strain which is very attractive for many actuator and transducer applications and a high dielectric constant which is attractive for development of high- density energy storage capacitors and electronic packaging.
