Small-JASMINE is a small Japanese astrometric satellite, developed mainly at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. The target launch date of Small-JASMINE is around 2017. The satellite will be equipped with a telescope with an aperture size of 30 cm and a focal length of approximately 3.9 m. The operational wavelength will be centered on the infrared Hw band, between 1.1 and 1.7 μm, using a HgCdTe detector with 4k × 4k pixels. This will enable us to observe the central regions of our Galaxy and clarify the dynamical structure of the bulge region. A restricted region of the Galactic bulge will be observed using a frame-linking method, which is different from the approach taken by both Hipparcos and Gaia, both developed at ESA. The target accuracy of the annual parallax and proper motion is approximately 10 μas and 10 μas yr−1, respectively, in the central region of the survey area of 0.3 × 0.3 deg2. The target accuracy of the annual parallax, ~ 50 μas, and that of the proper motion, ~ 50 μas yr−1, will be obtained within a region of 2 × 2 deg2. The observing region covers a field of approximately 3 × 3 deg2. The mission is required to continue for around three years to obtain reliable measurements. In the winter season, the angular distance between the Sun and the Galactic bulge region is small. Accordingly, we may have the chance to observe different regions which contain scientifically interesting targets, such as Cygnus X-1. If we are successful in observing the object over the course of a few weeks, the orbital elements of the star accompanying Cygnus X-1 can be resolved by Small-JASMINE.

Nano-JASMINE is an ultrasmall Japanese satellite (with a weight of 35 kg), designed to carry out an astrometric mission. The target accuracy is 3 milliarcseconds (mas) for stars brighter than magnitude 7.5 at zw-band wavelengths of 0.6–1.0 μm. The observational strategy is the same as that of Gaia and Hipparcos. The time span of 20 years since the Hipparcos mission will enable us to update the proper motion data obtained at that time. With the help of these updated measurements, we expect that some stars will be resolved into multiple stars. In addition, taking advantage of the small primary mirror (with a diameter of 5 cm), we can measure bright stars which cannot be observed with Gaia because of saturation limits. The core data reduction for the Nano-JASMINE mission will use Gaia's Astrometric Global Iterative Solution (agis). A collaboration between the Gaiaagis and Nano-JASMINE teams was initiated in 2007.

Japan Astrometry Satellite Mission for Infrared Exploration (JASMINE) aims to construct a map of the Galactic bulge with 10 μ arc sec accuracy. We use z-band CCD for avoiding dust absorption, and observe about 10 × 20 degrees area around the Galactic bulge region. Because the stellar density is very high, each FOVs can be combined with high accuracy. With 5 years observation, we will construct 10 μ arc sec accurate map.

In this poster, I will show the observation strategy, design of JASMINE hardware, reduction scheme, and error budget. We also construct simulation software named JASMINE Simulator. We also show the simulation results and design of software.

We explain simulation tools in the JASMINE project (JASMINE simulator). The JASMINE project stands at the stage where its basic design will be determined in a few years. Therefore it is very important to simulate the data stream generated by astrometric fields at JASMINE in order to support investigations of error budgets, sampling strategy, data compression, data analysis, scientific performances, etc. We find that new software technologies, such as Object Oriented (OO) methodologies, are ideal tools for the simulation system of JASMINE (the JASMINE simulator). We present the outline and current status of the nano-JASMINE project. Nano-JASMINE is a nano size astrometry satellite (the total payload mass is between 1 kg and 10 kg), which is expected to be launched in 2006. The main purpose of the project is to prove and demonstrate the key technologies required for JASMINE (Japanese Astrometry Satellite Mission for Infrared Exploration) in a real space environment Gouda et. al. (2002). Nano-JASMINE will measure annual parallaxes of bright stars (7 mag) with an accuracy greater than 1 milliarcsecond after two years of operation. This is comparable to the accuracy of the Hipparcos catalog. We have investigated the optical design for the Japan astrometry satellite mission (JASMINE). In order to accomplish measurements of astrometric parameters with high accuracy, optics with a long focal length and a wide focal plane for astrometry are required. In 1977 Korsch proposed a three mirror system with a long focal length and a wide focal plane. The Korsch system is one of the convincing models. However, the center of the field is totally vignetted because of the fold mirror. Therefore we consider an improved Korsch system in which the center of the field is not vignetted. Finally, we obtain the diffraction limited optical design with small distortion. Our project needs a common astrometric technique to obtain precise positions of star images on solid state detectors to accomplish its objectives. In order to determine the centers of stars, an image of the point source must be focused onto the CCD array with a spread of a few pixels. The distribution of photons (photoelectrons) over a set of pixels enables us to estimate positions of stars with sub-pixel accuracy. We modify the algorithm to estimate the real positions of stars from the photon weighted mean, which was originally developed by the FAME (Full-Sky Astrometric Mapping Explorer) group. Finally, we obtain the results from the experiment that the accuracy of estimation of distance between two stars has a variance of about 1/300 pixel; that is, the error for one measurement is about 1/300 pixel, which is almost an ideal result given by Poisson photon noise. We also investigate the accuracy of estimation of positions with a different size of PSF. Since molecular gas fuels AGNs and molecular clouds form stars, understanding of molecular gas dynamics is a key to the understanding of active phenomena (such as starbursts and AGNs) in galactic nuclei. To study gas dynamics in weakly barred galaxies, we made CO interferometry (to trace gas) and NIR imaging (to trace stars) toward two nearby SAB galaxies M100 and M94. Each galaxy has a small stellar nuclear bar and also has an outer bar or oval distortion, thus suitable for the study of gas dynamics in a barred gravitational potential. Observations were made using Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA) and the IRcamera PICNIC installed at the ISAS 1.3 m telescope.
