The purpose of this study was to explore the electroencephalogram (EEG) features sensitive to situation awareness (SA) and then classify SA levels. Forty-eight participants were recruited to complete an SA standard test based on the multi-attribute task battery (MATB) II, and the corresponding EEG data and situation awareness global assessment technology (SAGAT) scores were recorded. The population with the top 25% of SAGAT scores was selected as the high-SA level (HSL) group, and the bottom 25% was the low-SA level (LSL) group. The results showed that (1) for the relative power of $\beta$1 (16–20Hz), $\beta$2 (20–24Hz) and $\beta$3 (24–30Hz), repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) in three brain regions (Central Central-Parietal, and Parietal) × three brain lateralities (left, midline, and right) × two SA groups (HSL and LSL) showed a significant main effect for SA groups; post hoc comparisons revealed that compared with LSL, the above features of HSL were higher. (2) for most ratio features associated with $\beta$1 ∼ $\beta$3, ANOVA also revealed a main effect for SA groups. (3) EEG features sensitive to SA were selected to classify SA levels with small-sample data based on the general supervised machine learning classifiers. Five-fold cross-validation results showed that among the models with easy interpretability, logistic regression (LR) and decision tree (DT) presented the highest accuracy (both 92%), while among the models with hard interpretability, the accuracy of random forest (RF) was 88.8%, followed by an artificial neural network (ANN) of 84%. The above results suggested that (1) the relative power of $\beta$1 ∼ $\beta$3 and their associated ratios were sensitive to changes in SA levels; (2) the general supervised machine learning models all exhibited good accuracy (greater than 75%); and (3) furthermore, LR and DT are recommended by combining the interpretability and accuracy of the models.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Australia has profoundly affected older adults, particularly in the state of Victoria, which experienced strict lockdown restrictions six times since the pandemic began in 2020; totalling 245 days over three years. This study explored the experiences of older adults living in retirement villages during the first three lockdowns in Victoria from March 2020 to February 2021. We draw on the concept of the ‘third age’ to explore how residents’ post-retirement social and lifestyle aspirations were disrupted by the pandemic and associated lockdowns. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 14 residents during January and February 2021. All data were analysed using thematic mapping. Five key themes were identified: (1) benefits and frustrations of retirement village living during a pandemic; (2) the loss of amenities and activities; (3) heightened loneliness and social isolation; (4) reaching out to others; and (5) variable experiences of operators’ response. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted short-term and long-term issues around social isolation and the management of retirement villages, it has also demonstrated the resilience of residents and the strength of community ties and relationships. Retirement villages are promoted as age-friendly environments that enable an active and healthy post-retirement lifestyle. Yet our findings reveal heterogeneity within village populations. When services closed during lockdowns, this revealed a tension between the policy assumption that retirement villages are a housing consumption choice, and the unmet needs of those residents who depend on village services for day-to-day functioning.

Increasing emphasis on the use of real-world evidence (RWE) to support clinical policy and regulatory decision-making has led to a proliferation of guidance, advice, and frameworks from regulatory agencies, academia, professional societies, and industry. A broad spectrum of studies use real-world data (RWD) to produce RWE, ranging from randomized trials with outcomes assessed using RWD to fully observational studies. Yet, many proposals for generating RWE lack sufficient detail, and many analyses of RWD suffer from implausible assumptions, other methodological flaws, or inappropriate interpretations. The Causal Roadmap is an explicit, itemized, iterative process that guides investigators to prespecify study design and analysis plans; it addresses a wide range of guidance within a single framework. By supporting the transparent evaluation of causal assumptions and facilitating objective comparisons of design and analysis choices based on prespecified criteria, the Roadmap can help investigators to evaluate the quality of evidence that a given study is likely to produce, specify a study to generate high-quality RWE, and communicate effectively with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders. This paper aims to disseminate and extend the Causal Roadmap framework for use by clinical and translational researchers; three companion papers demonstrate applications of the Causal Roadmap for specific use cases.

In Canada, recreational use of cannabis was legalized in October 2018. This policy change along with recent publications evaluating the efficacy of cannabis for the medical treatment of epilepsy and media awareness about its use have increased the public interest about this agent. The Canadian League Against Epilepsy Medical Therapeutics Committee, along with a multidisciplinary group of experts and Canadian Epilepsy Alliance representatives, has developed a position statement about the use of medical cannabis for epilepsy. This article addresses the current Canadian legal framework, recent publications about its efficacy and safety profile, and our understanding of the clinical issues that should be considered when contemplating cannabis use for medical purposes.

Introduction: The GridlockED game is a serious game aimed at teaching junior learners about flow and organization in the emergency department(ED). With serious games, the mechanism of learning is thought to be via the gameplay experience. Objectives built into gameplay are aimed at teaching players about a specific concept; in this case, we hoped to teach players about interprofessional collaboration and basic mechanics that drive flow in the ED. However, before a player can be taught, he or she must be engaged and have a positive gameplay experience. From the GridlockED gameplay, we aim to explore how a players gameplay experience related to observed actions while playing the game, including participating in decision making and keeping the team organized. Methods: From April-August 2017, participants were invited to play 4 turns of a GridlockED game session. They were video recorded during gameplay. After playing the game, they were surveyed using the previously derived Game Experience Questionnaire (GEQ) to measure their gameplay experience. The videos were reviewed by two research team members (SH, EJ), tallying various observed game actions. We conducted Pearson correlation between players GEQ total score and their observed actions. Results: A total of 32 participants (13 attendings, 5 senior residents, 10 junior residents, and 4 nurses) played the game. The average total GEQ was 67.2/132 (SD=10.7), suggesting most players had a moderately good gameplay experience. The total GEQ score correlated with component subscores within the questionnaire. Overall observed activity correlated well with each observed action subtype. However, the GEQ total score did not correlate significantly with the total observed action (Pearsons r=0.18,p=0.32). GEQ total score was found to be moderately correlated to an observation that a player participated in determining strategy during gameplay (r=0.36,p=0.04). There was a moderate negative correlation between determining strategy during gameplay and teaching about the game (r=-0.37,p=0.04) or emergency medicine concepts (r=-0.47,p<0.01). Conclusion: The GEQ is internally consistent, but does not have a strong relationship to observed actions, suggesting that game experience does not necessarily correlate with observable actions. This suggests that players may be intellectually stimulated or engaged without necessarily completing any observable actions during gameplay.

Silicon nanowires are becoming more important because of increasing requirements of the small scale and dense integration of devices. We report a top-down fabrication method for silicon nanowires using high-energy ion beam irradiation of bulk p-type silicon followed by electrochemical etching. Silicon nanowires with a diameter of ∼50nm have been fabricated and densely patterned nanowire arrays fabricated in different resistivity silicon wafers. With a suitable support structure, free standing silicon nanowires are also achieved. We investigate results depending on silicon wafer resistivity and location within the irradiated area.

Cell encapsulation has been broadly investigated as a technology to provide immunoprotection for transplanted endocrine cells. Here we develop a new fabrication method that allows for rapid, homogenous microencapsulation of insulin-secreting cells with varying microscale geometries and asymmetrically modified surfaces. Micromolding systems were developed using polypropylene mesh, and the mesh material/surface properties associated with efficient encapsulation were identified. Cells encapsulated using these methods maintain desirable viability and preserve their ability to proliferate and secrete insulin in a glucose-responsive manner. This new cell encapsulation approach enables a practical route to an inexpensive and convenient process for the generation of cell-laden microcapsules without requiring any specialized equipment or microfabrication process.

This experiment studied the effect of a modest difference in diet structure value (SV) on milk conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) contents of cows fed diets supplemented with extruded linseed, in situations where the diets provided enough SV and therefore did not induce milk fat depression. Six lactating Holstein cows were used in a crossover design with two treatments (‘SV 1.50’ and ‘SV 1.73’) and two periods of 21 days. The ‘SV 1.50’ diet contained 59% maize silage, 13% soya bean meal, 13% sugar beet pulp and 14% Nutex Compact (containing 56% extruded linseed) (dry matter (DM) basis) and was offered as a restricted total mixed ration. For the ‘SV 1.73’ diet, 8% wheat straw (DM basis) was added to the ‘SV 1.50’ diet as an additional structure source. The two diets had a forage-to-concentrate ratio of 59 : 41 and 62 : 38. The inclusion of straw in the diet resulted in an additional intake of NDF (+1110 g/day), which accounted for 90% of the additional intake of OM, whereas additional intakes of the other nutrients were minor. Milk yield and composition did not differ among treatments. The inclusion of straw in the diet did not affect the milk levels of t10–18:1, 18:2n-6, c9-16:1, c9-18:1, c11-18:1, 6:0, 8:0, 20:4 and 20:5. It decreased the milk levels of c9,t11-CLA (2.13% v. 3.03% of fatty acids (FA) reported, P < 0.001), t11-18:1 (4.99% v. 7.10% of FA reported, P < 0.001), 18:3n-3, t9-16:1 and t9-18:1, while it increased the milk levels of 6:0–14:0 (20.90% v. 19.69% of FA reported, P < 0.01), 16:0 (26.55% v. 25.25% of FA reported, P < 0.01), 18:0 (13.54% v. 12.59% of FA reported, P < 0.001), 17:0, 20:0 and 22:5. Regarding the ratio between FA, the inclusion of straw increased the 18:0/total C18 FA ratio (37.74% v. 32.07%, P < 0.001), whereas it decreased the total trans-C18 FA/total C18 FA ratio (15.46% v. 20.34%, P < 0.001), the t11-18:1/total C18 FA ratio (13.70% v. 17.95%, P < 0.01) and the c9,t11-CLA/total C18 FA ratio (5.82% v. 7.64%, P < 0.001). We conclude from this experiment that even a modest increase in SV to a diet supplemented with extruded linseed, yet already providing enough SV, alters the rumen lipid metabolism and, hence, CLA levels in milk fat.

Growth conditions, structural and optical properties of GaN quantum dots (QDs) grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy will be examined. It will be shown that, depending on the Ga/N ratio value and on growth temperature, the growth mode of GaN deposited on AlN can be either of the Stranski-Krastanow or of the Frank-Van der Merwe type. It will be shown that vertical correlation results in a red shift and in a narrowing of the photoluminescence spectra.

Growth of Eu-doped GaN quantum dots embedded in AlN will be described. Intense photoluminescence associated with Eu has been measured, with no GaN band-edge emission, as an evidence that carrier recombination mostly occurs through rare earth ion excitation. Persistent photoluminescence of Eu-doped GaN quantum dots as a function of temperature has been put in evidence, as a further confirmation of the recombination of confined carriers through Eu ion excitation.

Epitaxial growth of quaternary AlGalnN compounds by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy has been demonstrated. Two-dimensional growth is achieved under In excess, with a monolayer of In segregating at the growth front. The maximum In incorporation is significantly affected by the substrate temperature and the Al mole fraction of the alloy. This behavior has been attributed to the enhancement of In segregation due to the high binding energy of A1N compared to InN and GaN.
