Communication deviance (CD) reflects features of the content or manner of a person's speech that may confuse the listener and inhibit the establishment of a shared focus of attention. The construct was developed in the context of the study of familial risks for psychosis based on hypotheses regarding its effects during childhood. It is not known whether parental CD is associated with nonverbal parental behaviors that may be important in early development. This study explored the association between CD in a cohort of mothers (n = 287) at 32 weeks gestation and maternal sensitivity with infants at 29 weeks in a standard play procedure. Maternal CD predicted lower overall maternal sensitivity (B = –.385; p < .001), and the effect was somewhat greater for sensitivity to infant distress (B = –.514; p < .001) than for sensitivity to nondistress (B = –.311; p < .01). After controlling for maternal age, IQ and depression, and for socioeconomic deprivation, the associations with overall sensitivity and sensitivity to distress remained significant. The findings provide new pointers to intergenerational transmission of vulnerability involving processes implicated in both verbal and nonverbal parental behaviors.

There is evidence that group cognitive behavioural therapy for psychosis (CBTp) is an effective treatment, but much of this research has been conducted with outpatient populations. The aim of this review was to determine the utility of group CBTp for inpatients. We systematically searched Scopus, Web of Science and EBSCO electronic databases to identify relevant research. We reviewed the resulting articles and included those which had been conducted with inpatients, with symptoms of psychosis, using cognitive behaviour therapy, delivered in a group format. Fourteen articles relating to ten studies were identified. Two were randomized controlled trials; two were cohort studies and the rest were pre-/post-intervention studies. There was considerable heterogeneity between the studies and all had methodological limitations. The findings suggest positive trends towards the reduction of distress associated with psychotic symptoms, increased knowledge of symptoms, decreased affective symptoms and reduced readmissions over several years. However, there is currently not enough evidence to draw any strong conclusions regarding the utility of group CBTp for inpatients due to the small number of studies and limitations in quality and generalizability. Therefore, this review indicates the need for further research, particularly large, methodologically rigorous, randomized controlled trials.

This paper is a review of studies on psychological treatments for positive psychotic symptoms, and a detailed description of two of these studies, the Manchester Symptom Project, which aimed to decrease positive symptoms by training patients in effective coping strategies, and the Liverpool Auditory Hallucination project, which aimed to provide a cognitive-behavioural treatment for individuals with persistent and distressing voices. The results from these studies indicate that enduring positive symptoms which have not responded to neuroleptic medication can be effectively treated by psychological methods.

We conducted a pilot group intervention for negative symptoms, particularly targeting avolition/apathy. A baseline control design was used. Six patients were recruited, and four completed the group. The main inclusion criteria were clinically significant negative symptoms, plus associated distress and concern. The group involved 16 sessions, which were cognitive behavioural in approach. The main outcome measures were the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms, and the Subject Experience of Negative Symptoms Scale. Patients showed a reduction in avolition/apathy, and two patients reported reduced distress. These preliminary results suggest that group CBT is a possible intervention for negative symptoms.

Individual cognitive behavioural interventions for psychosis are rapidly developing and are being shown to be effective. This paper examines the application of these interventions on a group basis. The nature of the group, treatment outcome and potential benefits of using this format are described. After the group intervention, all patients were less depressed, most had higher self-esteem and greater knowledge of schizophrenia, and half the group felt better able to cope with their symptoms. Patients reported feeling less isolated and two of the four group members stated a preference for group over individual treatment.

We present Fabry-Perot observations of the velocity field of gas in the barred spiral NGC 4123, and 2-D hydrodynamical simulations of the gas flow in model potentials derived from I-band photometry. The simulated gas flow is quite sensitive to the details of the potential, which enables us to constrain parameters such as the M/LI of the bar and the bar pattern speed. The observations confirm that the dust lanes along the leading edges of the bar are the locations of shocks. Requiring models to produce shocks with the correct alignment constrains the Lagrange point L1 (corotation) to be at a radius 1.1 – 1.4 times the semimajor axis of the bar, i.e. the bar is a fast rotator.

Injection phobia is a “specific phobia” (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) in which affected individuals display an atypical physiological response pattern resulting in vasovagal hypotensive fainting on prolonged exposure. Between 50–60% of people with injection phobia report a history of fainting when confronted with their phobic situation. Applied tension has been demonstrated to be an effective therapeutic intervention for blood phobia in which similar vasovagal responses occur (Öst, Fellenius and Stelner, 1991). It has been shown that cognitive factors can prevent engagement with the treatment of phobic disorders. A case meeting DSM-IV criteria for specific phobia, blood-injection-injury type (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) is described. It illustrates that cognitive factors may prevent full compliance with applied tension and that behavioural experimentation is a useful strategy for dealing with such phenomena.
