Subcommittee on Standardization of Common and Botanical Names of Weeds. This subcommittee was appointed as a unit of the Terminology Committee of the Weed Society of America in recognition of the need for a standardized nomenclature of weeds and other plants associated with plant and vegetation control in the management of agricultural, turfgrass, pasture, range and forest lands of the United States and Canada. The availability and use of such standardized nomenclature should provide consistency and clarification in the general use of botanical and common names of weeds by technical workers in agriculture and wildland management in technical and popular publications.
The initial report of the Subcommittee, consisting of a list of important annual and perennial non-aquatic herbaceous weeds of continental United States and Canada, was published in the Report of the Terminology Committee in WEEDS 8:487–521, 1960. A second report in WEEDS 10:255–271, 1962, included an expanded list of annual and perennial herbaceous weeds and a list of important aquatic weeds.
