Investigations of the relationships between climate and human history often place more emphasis on the science of climate change than on understanding human socio-economic processes, and therefore suffer from superficial results and an unbalanced perspective. This is partly due to the lack of high-resolution data concerning long-term socio-economic processes. Here, we base our study of climate and society on a series of 2130-yr-long economic proxy data from China with decadal resolution. The economy was associated significantly with temperature and precipitation at the two predominant bands of 100 and 320 yr. The phase transition of economic states was influenced positively by long-term temperature change combined with triggering effects of short-term changes in precipitation. However, climatic impact on economy should not be recognized as simple causality but some driving-response relation coupled with meditation by human agency at multiple scales. A model of ‘adaptive cycles’ implies, in relative to the developing phases, climate–economy relationship during the declining phases was more easily moderated by slower processes like rigidity and faster processes like unrest. From a more-macro perspective, climatic driving for the macro-economic cycles was moderated by larger and slower processes like social memory, spatial shifting of key economic areas, and social–technical advance.

SG-III laser facility is now the largest laser driver for inertial confinement fusion research in China. The whole laser facility can deliver 180 kJ energy and 60 TW power ultraviolet laser onto target, with power balance better than 10%. We review the laser system and introduce the SG-III laser performance here.

We have fabricated La0.6Ca0.4MnO3 periodic arrays exhibiting tunable optical properties and magnetic properties using nontoxic and environmentally friendly electron beam resist made from La0.6Ca0.4MnO3 sol-gel precursor. We studied their unique optical properties by using the spectral microreflectometer and their magnetic properties using the superconducting quantum interference device and magnetic force microscopy. Additionally, the resist has the ability to demonstrate both positive and negative resist behaviors depending on the electron beam dosage. With these special characteristics, we can fabricate periodic structure on a thin film possessing controlled optical reflectance properties with one fixed design electron beam pattern without changing the structural parameters but changing the electron beam dosage only. Our approach provides an uncomplicated route for the fabrication of nanometer scale magnetic patterns, which serve as the building blocks in the search for novel properties of periodic magnetic arrays.

To increase our understanding of the relationships of trunk fat mass (FMtrunk) and four anthropometric indices in Chinese males, 1090 males aged 20–40 years were randomly recruited from the city of Changsha, China. Waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC) were measured using standardized equipment, and three other anthropometric indices of BMI, waist:hip ratio (WHR) and conicity index (CoI) were calculated using weight, height, HC and WC. FMtrunk (in kg) was measured using a Hologic QDR 4500 W dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanner. There was an increasing trend of FMtrunk, %FMtrunk (percentage of FMtrunk) and BMI, WC, WHR, CoI in successively older age groups (e.g. the mean FMtrunk values were 4·63 (sd 2·58), 5·39 (sd 2·74), 5·93 (sd 2·82), 6·57 (sd 2·94) in four 5-year age groups, respectively). FMtrunk and %FMtrunk were significantly correlated with four anthropometric indices with the Pearson's correlation coefficients ranging from 0·25 to 0·86. Principal component analysis was performed to form three principal components that interpreted over 99·5% of the total variation of four related anthropometric indices in all age groups, with over 65% of the total variation accounted by principal component 1. Multiple regression analyses showed that three principal components explained a greater variance (R2 70·0–80·1%) in FMtrunk than did BMI or WC alone (R2 57·8–74·1%). The present results suggest that there is an increasing trend of FMtrunk and four anthropometric indices in successively older age groups; that age has important effects on the relationships of FMtrunk and studied anthropometric indices; and that the accuracy of predicting FMtrunk using four anthropometric indices is higher than using BMI or WC alone.

We successfully dispersed amorphous bismuth titanate nanoparticles (<50 nm)in situ in poly-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate via a sol-gel process. Since less than 20% of the polymer composition is bismuth titanate by weight, the material exhibits high refractive indices (>1.6) and good optical transparency (>90% transmittance from 530 to 800 nm). Furthermore, this highly cross-linked material has an improved thermal stability and a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than that of neat polymers. The material also displays a high dielectric constant (>10) without ferroelectricity. Thus the material has potential applications in optical lenses, optical waveguides, and capacitors.

The atomic force microscopic technique is utilized to study the spatial distribution of silica nanoparticles embedded in poly(tetraethylene glycol diacrylate) matrix. The cast samples of these hybrid materials show distinct mechanical property change as the weight ratio (SiO2/polyacrylate) reaches 40%. The morphological observation from spin-coated films on silicon substrates shows pronounced nanoparticle network formation correlated to the elasticity transition. The percolating particles reduce the local strain field, i.e. inhibit the deformation of the stratum, and cause the dramatic increase in the Young's modulus. Our experimental result is consistent with recent theoretical prediction [1].

The photoluminescence properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon oxide powder SiO0.92H0.53 were investigated. The powder was prepared by reacting lithium with trichlorosilane in tetrahydrofuran. The luminescence peak energy was located between 1.0 and 1.61 eV. The samples were treated under different conditions such as annealing, hydrolysis, and hydrolysis plus HF etching. The changes of the photoluminescent intensity and location on the treated powders can be explained by the electronic density of state model of amorphous semiconductors. The temperature dependence of luminescence properties of the powders can be described by the relationship of thermal quenching effect: ln[Io/I(T) – 1] = ED/Eo = T/To at temperatures between 100 and 300 K.

Novel arrays of gold nanoparticles with sulfur containing fullerene nanoparticles were self-assembled through the formation of Au-S covalent bonds. Disulfide functional groups were introduced into C60 molecule by reacting propyl 2-aminoethyl disulfide with C60. The two dimensional(2D) arrays were formed at the interface of aqueous phase of gold particles and organic phase of fullerene particles as a blue transparent film. TEM images showed that the fullerene spacing between adjacent Au(∼10 nm) particles was about 2.1±0.4 nm, which was consistent with the result of 2.18 nm by molecular molding calculations(MM+). The arrays were deposited on the top of pairs of gold electrodes to form 2D colloidal single electron devices. The electrode pairs were made by electron beam lithography techniques, and the separation between tips of the two electrodes in a pair was less then 100 nm. Transport measurements at low temperatures exhibited Coulomb-Blockade type current-voltage characteristics, the lower the temperature the more pronounced the Coulomb gap. Also, step-by-step method was used to assemble one-dimensional(1D) array of gold nanoparticles with fullerene derivative between two electrodes spaced with 15 nm. The Coulomb blockade behavior of 1D arrays was clearer than that of 2D arrays.

Preparation of CdS nanoparticles, devices fabrication, and electroluminescence properties at room temperature of CdS nanoparticles on silicon substrates are reported. A spectral shift of 86-meV of free exciton transition was observed that was due to the passivation of p-hydroxyl thiophenol molecules around nanoparticles. Controlled process conditions such as heat treatment and/or with oxygen-rich environment are experimented and found to have significant influences on emission spectra. Radiative recombination corresponding to oxygen-impurity level, 273 meV below bandgap energy, presents in samples prepared in oxygen-rich environment. In addition to such mechanism, coalescence of nanoparticles into bulk form also exists and contributes to enhanced luminescence.
