Commission 12 of the International Astronomical Union encompasses investigations of the internal structure and dynamics of the Sun, the quiet solar atmosphere, solar radiation and its variability, and the nature of relatively stable magnetic structures like sunspots, faculae and the magnetic network. The Commission sees participation of over 300 scientists worldwide.

ChemiX is a Bragg crystal spectrometer that will fly on the two Interhelioprobe spacecraft due for launch in 2025 and 2026. The spacecraft perihelion will be only 0.3 a.u. and the orbit inclination up to 30°, and so instruments on board will have a close view of solar active regions and flares and regions near each solar pole. The ChemiX X-ray spectrometer, built by a consortium of groups led by the Space Research Centre, Polish Academy of Sciences, will fly on each of the spacecraft, and observe X-ray spectra in the 1.5 - 9 Å range. Spectral lines in this range include resonance lines of helium-like and hydrogen-like ions of elements such as Fe, Ca, Ar, S, and Si, with less abundant elements such as K and Cl represented by weaker lines which the high sensitivity of ChemiX should be able to detect. The free–free and free–bound continua should also be detected since instrumental background will be eliminated. Three of the seven channels of ChemiX will be in a “dopplerometer” arrangement by which spatial and spectral shifts present in flare impulsive stages can be disentangled.

The President of C12, Alexander Kosovichev, presented the status of the Commission and its working Group(s). Primary activities included organization of international meetings (IAU Symposia, Special Sessions and Joint Discussion); review and support of proposals for IAU sponsored meetings; organization of working groups on the Commission topics to promote the international cooperation; preparation of triennial report on the organizational and science activities of Commission members. Commission 12 broadly encompasses topics of solar research which include studies of the Sun's internal structure, composition, dynamics and magnetism (through helioseismology and other techniques), studies of the quiet photosphere, chromosphere and corona, and also research of the mechanisms of solar radiation, and its variability on various time scales. Some overlap with topics covered by Commission 10 Solar Activity is unavoidable, and many activities are sponsored jointly by these two commissions. To begin with, I would like to say a few words about the CORONAS-F mission, about what observations are carried out onboard and what is the present state of the obtained scientific data. A thermodynamic analysis of the carbon nucleation on the metal surface was performed. From the consideration of the catalytic mechanisms of carbon deposit formation on the metal surface we concluded that majority of these mechanisms include some common steps. The most important of them is the step of nucleation of carbon deposit on the metal surface. The master equation for the dependence of critical radius of the nucleus on reaction parameters was obtained. This equation demonstrates that a variation of the reaction parameters, such as the temperature, the nature of metal catalyst and the degree of supersaturation of the metal-carbon solution, can lead to the formation of different carbon deposits, such as filamentous carbon, multi-wall nanotubes (MWNT) or single-wall nanotubes (SWNT). The analysis performed allows us to conclude that for selective production of SWNT the nucleation must proceed at high temperature on the surface of liquid metal particles (Fe, Co, Ni). For solid metal particles (Mo) a high degree of supersaturation with carbon is also required.
