Recently huge amount of dust Mdust ≃ 106−7M⊙ in galaxies at z = 7–8 has been discovered by ALMA observations. The suggested timescale of the dust production was a few–several×108 yr, while the stellar mass was several × 109M⊙. This amount of dust cannot be easily explained only by a supply from supernovae if we consider the dust destruction by reverse shocks. We propose that these values can be consistently explained if we take into account the grain growth in the interstellar medium (ISM). This scenario successfully reproduces the evolution of the dust mass, as well as the SFR, and stellar mass simultaneously. We conclude that even at such an early epoch of the Universe, the dust grain growth in the ISM plays a significant role in galaxies.

The spectral energy distribution (SED) model should treat the evolution of a galaxy from its birth. Dust in galaxies affects the formation and evolution of galaxies in various ways. For example, dust grains scatter and absorb stellar emitted ultraviolet (UV) photons and re-emit the radiation at infrared (IR) wavelengths. In this work, we construct a galaxy SED model based on our dust evolution model (Asano et al. 2013a,b, 2014) with a rigorous treatment of the chemical evolution. To reduce the computational cost, we adopt mega-grain approximation (MGA; (MGA; Inoue, 2005). MGA regards a high density dusty region as a huge size (10 pc) dust grain for calculating dust scattering. In this approximation, we can solve the radiative transfer easily and provide SEDs and attenuation curves of galaxies. This model can be used to fit any galaxy in the wavelength range of 10 nm-3 mm.

In this paper we address two questions related to data analysis in large astronomical datasets, and we demonstrate how they can be answered making use of machine learning techniques. The first question is: how to efficiently find previously unknown or rare objects which can be expected to exist in big data samples? Using the largest existing extragalactic all-sky survey, provided by the WISE satellite, we demonstrate that, surprisingly, supervised classification methods can come to aid. The second question is: having a sufficiently large data sample, how can we look for new optimal classification schemes, possibly finding new and previously unknown classes and subclasses of sources? Based on the VIPERS cutting-edge galaxy catalog at redshift z > 0.5, we demonstrate that unsupervised classification methods can give unexpected but physically well-motivated results.

Various previous galaxy surveys have revealed that different types of galaxies show different spatial distributions. By comparing their clustering strengths, we can investigate the relationship between the environments where galaxies reside and the properties of galaxies. This provides us vital information on when, where, and how galaxies are formed. In this study, we focus on FIR-selected galaxies from AKARI All-Sky Survey, which are considered to be dusty star-forming galaxies. We measure their power spectrum and compare our final result with previous studies using different galaxy samples detected at other wavelengths. It is found that there is the very clear wavelength dependence of the clustering strength.

With the goal of constructing Star-Formation Rates (SFR) from AKARI Infrared Camera (IRC) data, we analyzed an IR-selected GALEX-SDSS-2MASS-AKARI(IRC & Far-Infrared Surveyor) sample of 153 nearby galaxies. The far-infrared fluxes were obtained from AKARI diffuse maps to correct the underestimation for extended sources raised by PSF photometry. SFRs of these galaxies were derived using the SED fitting program CIGALE. In spite of complicated features contained in these bands, both the S9W and L18W emissions correlate with the SFR of galaxies. The SFR calibrations using S9W and L18W are presented for the first time. These calibrations agree well with previous work based on Spitzer data within the scatter, and should be applicable to dust-rich galaxies.

Recent studies have been revealing the properties of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). Their low mass indicates that the dSphs may provide a clue to physical properties of the building blocks in the hierarchical structure formation. We select the Local Group dSphs as a sample. To obtain the information on the star formation history of dSphs, we investigate the relation between their metallicity and virial mass. According to our scenario, the star formation efficiency of the dSphs is low because of strong regulation. This is consistent with their high mass-to-light ratios. We also comment on the environmental effects on the dSphs.

We studied the statistical methods for the estimation of the luminosity function (LF) of galaxies by Monte Carlo simulations. After examining the performance of these methods, we analyzed the photometric redshift data of the Hubble Deep Field prepared by Fernández-Soto et al. (1999). We also derived luminosity density ρL at B- and I-band. Our B-band estimation is roughly consistent with that of Sawicki, Lin, & Yee (1997), but a few times lower at 2.0 < z < 3.0. The evolution of ρL(I) is found to be less prominent.

We examined the evolution of active regions and found that rotational motions of the neutral line in the δ-type magnetic configuration are common in the flare-productive active regions.

The mechanism of flare energy build-up is one of the most fundamental questions in the solar flare study, but is still to be solved. From the review of the previous studies, we notice that the formation process of the magnetic shear in an active region should be essential for the flare energy build-up mechanism. Based on this idea, we make detailed studies of the active region evolutions using high resolution Hα images obtained with the 60 cm Domeless Solar Telescope at Hida Observatory, Kyoto University.

We study sunspot proper motions and evolutionary changes of Hα fine structures and magnetic fields in active regions NOAA 5395 (Ishii et al. 1998) and NOAA 4201 (Ishii et al. 2000). To explain the evolutionary characteristics found from the analysis of these two active regions, we propose schematic models of twisted flux bundles emerging from the convection zone. We also found that the occurrence of high flare activity in each active region was restricted to the rapidly emerging region of the twisted flux bundle. In conclusion, we suggest that the emergence of the twisted flux bundle should be the key to high flare-productivity of the sunspot group, or the flare energy build-up mechanism.

We found an anomalous behavior of dopant diffusion in Si substrate during the oxynitride process. SIMS measurements showed a notably enhanced diffusion during the NO and N2O oxynitride process. The considerably enhanced diffusion was also observed in re-oxidation of oxynitride film grown by the NO annealing or NH3 nitridation of a SiO2 film. In order to simulate the enhanced diffusion, an enhancement coefficient was introduced, showing that the simulation results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental ones. We applied the diffusion model to the simulations of MOSFETs fabricated under various conditions of the oxynitride process. The device characteristics of MOSFETs were successfully reproduced by adopting a suitable dependence of nitrogen concentration CN on the surface recombination rate of interstitial Si at the oxynitride/Si substrate interface.

We analyzed 10 dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) in the Local Group, and found two distinct sequences on the Mvir/L - Mvir plane: Mvir/L ∝ Mvir1.6 for Mvir < 108M⊙ whereas Mvir/L ≃ const. for Mvir > 108M⊙ (Mvir and L are the virial mass and the total luminosity of a dSph, respectively). We interpret the discontinuity as the threshold for the gas in dSphs to be blown away by successive supernovae. We succeeded in giving a quantitative explanation of the discontinuity mass of 108M⊙ as the blow-away condition. We further derived the above relation for the low-mass dSphs, assuming that the initial star formation rate of the dSphs is proportional to the inverse of the cooling time. The relation of high-mass dSphs is also explained along with the same consideration, with the condition that the gas cannot be blown away.

Recently several authors have studied dualizing Goldie dimension of a module: spanning dimension in [2], codimension in [13], corank in [16] and also [9,17,12, 5,11, 6, 4, 7] ([13] may be read in comparison with the others). In the present note we prove the equality corank RP = corank SS, where P is a quasi-projective left R-module and S is its endomorphism ring. This result is an answer to the question [12, p. 1898] and an extension of [3, Corollary 4.3] which shows the above equality for a Σ-quasi-projective left R-module P.

In this study, we evaluated the electrical properties of the bonded silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers with lifetime measurements using a non-contact laser-microwave method. We prepared one group that consisted of bonded SOI wafers with different active layer thicknesses (I0,30,100μm) and another group consisting of bonded SOI wafers with different buried oxide layer thicknesses(0,0.01,0.1,0.75μm). Primary mode lifetime (τ1) was measured by the photoconductivity decay (PCP) method using the laser diode (λ= 774nm) as a carrier-injected light source. Steady-state change in the conductivity was measured by the photoconductivity modulation (PCM) method using a He-Ne laser (λ = 633nm) as a carrier-injected light source. τ1 decreases as the active layer thickness decreases. The PCM intensity also decreases with decreasing active layer thickness. Surface and interface recombination rates of the SOI are increased with decreasing layer thickness. The PCM intensity also decreases as the buried layer thickness decreases.
