On the 29th of June, 1897, I found, in the Gomin Swamp, two Spilosomas, females, lying side by side. One of them was much spotted, and presented the exact appearance of the insect which is figured, with closed wings, in the original edition of Dru Drury's work, and named by him Bombyx cunea. The other was white, but on the median nerve, at the angle of the second fork, there was a small black dot, hardly perceptible. The thorax was clothed with light down; the abdomen was white and spotless. The eyes were black, as were also the under sides of the antennae and feet. The front of the thorax under the head was luteours.

This second moth laid eggs on the 10th of July, and the eggs produced larvae which, in due time, pupated. The moths appeared in the following spring.

Amesolytus pictus, n. sp.— Length of body 8mm, length of antennæ 4 mm.; expanse of wings, 13 mm.

Head: Clypeus white, pilose, somewhat mottled in appearance; mouth organs white; upper portions of the head black, except that on either side of the front there is a white line next the eye, and above the eye on either side of white semi-oval patch extending behind the ocelli. Eyes oval, large, protubernat, dark brown with a gloss. Ocelli jet black, Cheek, lower part white; upper part black.

Our President has asked me what methods I adopted for the raising of C. jutta from the egg. I will endeavour of describe them.

As it is well known the larvæ of the genus Chionobas feed on grasses, my first care was to determine what grasses were to be found in the haunts of Jutta, and to notice the circumstances under which they grew. I found several, all rooted in the sphagnum of the swamp. I took home roots of ever kind, and potted them in sphagnum, being careful to close the hole in the bottom of each flower pot with a cork, and to soak the plants throughly with rain water.

I think that I am the first man who has witnessed the hatching of the eggs of Pamphila Manitoba. I take pleasure in the belief; and I am glad to add another chapter to the history of our North American Rhopalocera.

Pamphila Manitoba is a sub-Arctic species. The first specimens taken in the neighbourhood of Quebec were captured by Mr. Hanham and myself in September, 1892 (See 23rd Rep. Ent. Soc., Ont., p. 31). The species had, in previous years, been taken at Riviére-du-Loup en bas, Cacouna, Metis, and Gaspé (See Mr. H. H. Lyman's article, 22nd Rep. Ent. Soc. of Ont., p. 27). In 1893, it appeared at Quebec on the 5th of August, and this year a specimen left the chrysalis, in my house, on the 21st of July. It would seem as if change of climate and locality were bringing forward the insect's time of appearance.

The tall White Lettuce, Nabalus altissimus, Hooker, is a striking and graceful plant. At Quebec it is found in glades and on the edges of woodland roads. Its wand-like stems rise sometimes to the height of six feet, and end in panicles of greenish-white or pale straw-coloured flowers. The stems are hollow, but have a lining or inner coat of white downy pith, which in the summer is sometimes found to be broken with discoloured warts. Late in the fall, when the stems of the plant have become indurated and the pith has dried up, the warts are found to have developed into galls of the size, shape and colour of grains of hemp. I have found them in the stems from about six inches above the ground up to a height of three feet or perhaps more. Sometimes they appear in clusters, sometimes in rows, and sometimes singly at intervals. The proper inhabitant of each of these galls is a footless, spindle-shaped grub, one-eighth of an inch long. In colour it is like white wax, with the mouth organs brown. It is more pointed at the head than at the other extremity. It lies curled round in the gall.

Upon request, I sent to Dr. H. A. Hagen specimens of the parasite of the Phylloxera, Diplosis (?) grassator. At the same time I sent him specimens of the Psylla described on page 198 of vol. xiv. Dr. Hagen favored me with information as follows:—

“The fly is a Cecidomyia; I think it is not sure that it belongs to Diplosis. At least the reticulation of the wing differs in having the median vein straight, and the fork at the hind margin wanting. You will see in Osten Sacken's Catalogue that the museums do not possess this type for Cecidomyia. I have gone through the literature, and find till now your species is not described. The larva is shrivelled up, therefore the trophi are not visible.

In the beginning of September, 1898, I discovered, in the heads of burdock (Lappa major, Gætn.), a curious larva, of which the following is a description:

Head bilobed, brown. Mouth organs large. A brown plate, marked longitudinally with a white line, on the second segment. Body rounded, much crinkled, of a fatty appearance, having a few white hairs along the sides. Anal segment small and protruding. The legs small and weak. The pro-legs seemingly atrophied into mere pseudopodia. Length of larva, two and a half lines.

In the first week of July my attention was drawn by my friend, Mr. Joshua Thomson, of Levis, to a strange sight, The plum trees in his grounds were infested with myriads of a new species of Torymus, as many as thirty of the insects appearing on one plum. I never witnessed anything in my entomological pursuits more remarkable. The brilliant little creatures could be seen in the act of depositing their eggs; their ovipositors thrust deep into the fruit. Some of the plums attacked showed signs of a previous attack of the Curculio, but most of them did not. Whether the larvæ of the species feed on the flesh and juices of the plum or attack the grubs of the Curcuiio, I cannot say, for I was unable to follow the life-history of the species.

The young larva of Zarœa Americana appears in the beginning of July on Menyanthes trifoliata. It lies curled on the underside of the leaf. Its head is black, and its body lead-colour above and greenishwhite beneath. It develops into the most beautiful larva of any of the Tenthredinidae that I am acquanited with.

Eggs.—Laid dispersedly on the 11th of August. They were pinkish-white in colour; somewhat flattened; striated, and had cross indentations. They hatched on the 21st of the month.

Newly-hatched larva.—A half-looper; one-tenth of an inch long. Head bilobed, large. General colour a very pale olive-green, with numerous black warts on head and body, and a few white bristles. Mandibles amber-coloured. Feeds on Plantago major. Moulted August 28th.

Occaionally, after a mild day or two in winter, we see a newspaper paragraph headed “Remarkable Appearance of a Butterfly.” From the tone of the article we usually judge that the writer had been lost in astonishment, at what he regarded as a strange phenomenon. This short paper will rob such appearances of their mystery.

I thought I had “said my say” on the Cunea-Congrua question, but Mr. Lyman's attack upon me demands a reply.

Mr. Lyman has made a military allusion in rather questionable taste. I would remind him that the reason the Boers have stuck to their guns is that, until now (May, 1900), their opponents have not been able to capture their guns, but have, on the other hand, furnished the Boers with new artillery and fresh stores of ammunition.

Antennæ, filiform, brown; number of joints, twenty-seven; scape, large, ovate, pale yellow beneath. Eyes naked, large and prominent, dark rosy brown. Clypesu, labrum, mandibles and palpi pale yellow. The lower portions of the epicranium are of the same colour. The occiput is black, smooth and glossy. Mesothorax highly convex, black, sparsely set with short, pale-brown, retrose hairs. Scutellum elevated. Tegulæ yellow. The under parts of thorax amber-coloured, as are also the legs, with the exception of the tarsi and parts of the tibiæ of teh hindmost pair, which are brown.

The Broad-leaved Aster (Aster macrophyllus, L.) grows in patches of considerable size in the woods around Levis. In the month of June, 1902, I noticed that many of the large ground leaves of the plant were folded over from both sides and crinckled. On opening one of them I found that a larva had truned the leaf into a cool and pleasant tent for itself, and was feeding upon the parenchyma of the leaf.

I have taken, in the Province of Quebec, the undermentioned species of two-winged flies, the names of which do not appear in the Toronto Check List

Length,.35 inch. Head dark fawn colour, scabrous, much prolonged between the antennæ, the prolongation suggestive of the nose of the moose. Eyes upon rounded elevations, black and protuberant. The antennary spine stout, sharp and projecting. Antennæ reddish brown above, olivaceous beneath; the joint next the spine distinct and square cut and of greater diameter than that following it. Beak black, long, extending between the front legs. Prothorax dark umber in colour, concave in front, the concavity ending on either side with a short spine. From the bases of these spinse the sides (which are finely denticulated) run direct to the widest part of the prothorax; from thence they are rounded to the back, forming a pair of clay-yellow epaulets, which extend beyond the slightly-curved remainder of the back line.
