Heart University [https://www.heartuniversity.org/] is a free educational website providing structured training curricula with knowledge-based testing and access to webinars and conference recordings for practicing and in-training providers of paediatric and congenital cardiac care. To date, there are over 15,000 registered website users from over 140 countries on Heart University, with over 2,000 training modules and/or recorded educational videos. Heart University has developed an “asynchronous” educational lecture series entitled “Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Care in Resource-Limited Settings.” This recorded lecture series is specifically focused on topics relevant to practicing paediatric and/or congenital cardiac care in low-resource settings.

A relatively new initiative, “Cardiology Across Continents,” supplements the existing educational resources for providers of paediatric and/or congenital cardiac care in low-income countries and lower-middle-income countries by providing an additional live, interactive, case-based forum. Sessions occur every 1–2 months and focus on challenging cases from diagnostic or management perspective with a view to promote collaboration between partnered institutions. “Cardiology Across Continents” is an expanding initiative that facilitates learning and collaboration between clinicians across varied practice settings via interactive case discussions. We welcome trainees and providers of paediatric and congenital cardiac care to join the sessions and invite any insight that can enhance learning for clinicians around the world. This manuscript describes “Cardiology Across Continents” and discusses the development, history, current status, and future plans of Heart University.

This is an epidemiological study of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) in Veterans’ Affairs medical centers (VAMCs). In 2017, almost 75% of VAMCs had at least 1 CRE case. We observed substantial geographic variability, with more cases in urban, complex facilities. This supports the benefit of tailoring infection control strategies to facility characteristics.

Tobacco dependence is one of the most common preventable risk factors for health damage. The consequences of this addiction are not only shown on various organ systems, but also lead to changes on neuronal level.

The aim of the investigation was to detect neural responses in the reward system in smokers versus nonsmokers. For that purpose, the processing of reward – associated stimuli under withdrawal is compared to the neural activity after nicotine – consumption.

40 volunteers (20 smokers, 20 nonsmokers), between 18 and 60 years, were enrolled in the study. The smokers were further devided into two groups. One group was first measured in deprivation, secondly after smoking, the second group in inverse order. After a resting sequence in a 3T MRI, the participants took part in a gambling paradigm with real financial profit and loss.

The preliminary results show differences in reward-related neural structures like amygdala, hippocampus between smokers and nonsmokers. In addition, differences were found among smokers depending on the current smoking status (withdrawal or tobacco consumption).

Reward related structures are differentially activated, depending on active consumption versus withdrawal. Thus these data furthermore point out the importance of smoking status in neurobiological and treatment studies.

Tobacco dependence can lead to a variety of different symptoms. One important aspect of tobacco dependence is the strong desire to consume the substance (craving). Craving is controlled by multiple cognitive, emotional and motivational processes. Previous studies have shown that craving can be increased during the visual perception of smoking-related cues. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the nicotine status on craving-related responses.

Functional MRI (3 Tesla) was used to detect brain responses during the presentation of neutral and tobacco-associated pictures. Smokers were scanned twice, deprived of tobacco as well as non-deprived, in alternating order.

So far, the results show a significantly increased neural activity during the presentation of tobacco-related cues in smokers compared to healthy controls, especially in the secondary visual cortex as well as parts of the frontal lobe and the hippocampus. At the time of tobacco withdrawal, smokers demonstrated increased neural responses during the presentation of tobacco-related pictures, especially in emotion-related areas of the brain.

The results indicate that the visual impression of smoking-related cues can lead to a different neuronal activity in patients with tobacco addiction, especially during deprivation. We would like to suggest that the increased allocation of attention and enhanced emotional responses should be considered in therapeutic approaches.

Flower and leaf herbivory might cause relevant and negative impacts on plant fitness. While flower removal or damage by florivores produces direct negative effects on plant fitness, folivores affect plant fitness by reducing resource allocation to reproduction. In this study, we examine the effects of both flower and leaf herbivory by leaf-cutting ants on the reproductive success of the shrub species Miconia nervosa (Smith) Triana (Family Melastomataceae) in a fragment of Atlantic Forest in Northeast Brazil. We conducted a randomized block-designed field experiment with nine replicates (blocks), in which three plants per block were assigned to one of the three following treatments: undamaged plants (ant exclusion), leaf-damaged plants (ant exclusion from reproductive organs, but not from leaves), and flower + leaf-damaged plants (no exclusion of ants). We then measured flower production, fruit set, and fruit production. Our results showed that flower + leaf-damaged plants reduced flower production nearly twofold in relation to undamaged plants, while flower set in leaf-damaged plants remained constant. The number of flowers that turned into fruits (i.e., fruit set), however, increased by 15% in flower + leaf-damaged plants, while it slightly decreased in leaf-damaged compared to undamaged plants. Contrastingly, fruit production was similar between all treatments. Taken together, our results suggest a prominent role of ant floral herbivory across different stages of the reproductive cycle in M. nervosa, with no consequences on final fruit production. The tolerance of M. nervosa to leaf-cutting ant herbivory might explain its high abundance in human-modified landscapes where leaf-cutting ants are hyper-abundant.

Designing materials for performance in high-radiation fields can be accelerated through a carefully chosen combination of advanced multiscale modeling paired with appropriate experimental validation. The studies reported in this work, the combined efforts of six universities working together as the Consortium on Cladding and Structural Materials, use that approach to focus on improving the scientific basis for the response of ferritic–martensitic steels to irradiation. A combination of modern modeling techniques with controlled experimentation has specifically focused on improving the understanding of radiation-induced segregation, precipitate formation and growth under radiation, the stability of oxide nanoclusters, and the development of dislocation networks under radiation. Experimental studies use both model and commercial alloys, irradiated with both ion beams and neutrons. Transmission electron microscopy and atom probe are combined with both first-principles and rate theory approaches to advance the understanding of ferritic–martensitic steels.

Habitat fragmentation is gradually altering tropical forests all around the globe (Wright 2005), as human populations convert large blocks of pristine forest habitats into permanently fragmented or human-modified landscapes (Tabarelli et al. 2004). Fragmentation processes apparently create opportunities for small sets of species, which proliferate across modified landscapes, while others are driven to extinction or remain as minimal populations (Tabarelli et al. 2010). This ‘winners vs. losers paradigm’ (sensu McKinney & Lockwood 1999) probably describes one of the most conspicuous rearrangements of tropical biotas in response to human disturbances (in addition to biomass collapse), with unanticipated consequences for ecosystem functioning and long-term biodiversity persistence (Lôbo et al. 2011). Despite such appeal, the ecological identity of proliferating organisms and the mechanisms underlying their high abundance levels remains poorly appreciated.

The present work shows results on elemental distribution analyses in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 thin films for solar cells performed by use of wavelength-dispersive and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) in a scanning electron microscope, EDX in a transmission electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron, angle-dependent soft X-ray emission, secondary ion-mass (SIMS), time-of-flight SIMS, sputtered neutral mass, glow-discharge optical emission and glow-discharge mass, Auger electron, and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, by use of scanning Auger electron microscopy, Raman depth profiling, and Raman mapping, as well as by use of elastic recoil detection analysis, grazing-incidence X-ray and electron backscatter diffraction, and grazing-incidence X-ray fluorescence analysis. The Cu(In,Ga)Se2 thin films used for the present comparison were produced during the same identical deposition run and exhibit thicknesses of about 2 μm. The analysis techniques were compared with respect to their spatial and depth resolutions, measuring speeds, availabilities, and detection limits.

Plasmodium falciparum parasites use multiple ligand-receptor interactions to invade human erythrocytes. Variant expression levels of members of the PfRh and PfEBA ligand families are associated with the use of different erythrocyte receptors, defining invasion pathways. Here we analyse a major polymorphism, a large sequence deletion in the PfRh2b ligand, and erythrocyte invasion profiles in uncultured Senegalese isolates. Parasites vary considerably in their use of sialic acid-containing and protease-sensitive erythrocyte receptors for invasion. The erythrocyte selectivity index was not related to invasion pathway usage, while parasite multiplication rate was associated with enhanced use of a trypsin-resistant invasion pathway. PfRh2b protein was expressed in all parasite isolates, although the PfRh2b deletion was present in a subset (~68%). Parasites with the PfRh2b deletion were found to preferentially utilize protease-resistant pathways for erythrocyte invasion. Sialic acid-independent invasion is reduced in parasites with the PfRh2b deletion, but only in isolates derived from blood group O patients. Our results suggest a significant role for PfRh2b sequence polymorphism in discriminating between alternative erythrocyte receptors for invasion and as a possible determinant of virulence.

Leaf-cutting ants (genera Atta and Acromyrmex) have been denoted key species of American rain-forest ecosystems (Fowler et al. 1989) because of their multifarious effects on the vegetation. Being dominant herbivores, cutting up to 13% of the standing leaf crop in a colony's territory per year, they affect directly and significantly individual plants, plant communities and ecosystems (Wirth et al. 2003). The considerable ecological impact of these ants is paralleled by the well-known fact that some species strongly benefit from human-driven habitat alterations and represent prime pests throughout Latin America (Cherrett 1986). Numerous studies have documented populations of leaf-cutting ant to increase with increasing agricultural land use, deforestation and/or disturbance (Fowler et al. 1986, Jaffe & Vilela 1989, Jonkman 1979). Specifically, elevated colony densities have been recorded in (1) transformed vegetation such as pastures (Fowler 1983) and plantations (Jaffe 1986, Oliveira et al. 1998), (2) early successional forests (Vasconcelos & Cherrett 1995), and recently (3) isolated forest remnants (Terborgh et al. 2001).

Mutations in pfcrt K76T are associated with chloroquine resistance in Plasmodium falciparum. Previous studies of K76T mutations in Senegal reported the association of T76 with in vitro-resistant isolates, but this mutation was also prevalent in chloroquine-sensitive isolates. This suggests involvement of additional genetic loci in modulating chloroquine resistance. Additional pfcrt polymorphisms at codons A220S, Q271E, N326S and R371I have been found in chloroquine-resistant isolates. We wanted to test if sequential acquisition of mutations at these codons leads to in vitro chloroquine resistance. Stepwise accumulation of mutations was not detected, rather there was almost complete linkage between the pfcrt K76T mutation and polymorphisms in these codons. Therefore these additional polymorphisms do not enhance the correlation between pfcrt T76 and chloroquine resistance in Senegal. These data suggest that in vitro chloroquine resistance requires the genetic background of the pfcrt K76T mutation and additional mutations in genetic loci outside the pfcrt gene.
