Lithium-bearing donbassite and tosudite were found in veins in hydrothermally altered granite (Beauvoir granite) in the northern part of the Massif Central, France. The two minerals are characterized by their high Li contents and low Mg and Fe contents; their structural formulae are: $${\left( {S{i_{3.81}}A{l_{0.19}}} \right)_{\Sigma = 4.00}}{O_{10}}{\left( {A{l_{3.81}}L{i_{0.52}}Fe_{0.01}^{2 + }C{a_{0.02}}M{g_{0.01}}} \right)_{\Sigma - 4.38}}{\left( {OH} \right)_8}{\left( {N{a_{0.07}}{K_{0.04}}} \right)_{\Sigma = 0.11}}$$ for donbassite and $${\left( {S{i_{3.50}}A{l_{0.50}}} \right)_{\Sigma = 4.00}}{O_{10}}{\left( {A{l_{2.95}}L{i_{0.22}}Fe_{0.01}^{3 + }T{i_{0.01}}} \right)_{\Sigma = 3.19}}{\left( {OH} \right)_5}{\left( {C{a_{0.01}}N{a_{0.15}}{K_{0.18}}} \right)_{\Sigma = 0.34}}$$ for tosudite.

These chemical compositions indicate that the donbassite is an intermediate member of the donbassite-cookeite solid solution series and that the tosudite consists of interstratified Li-donbassite and beidellite. Both Li-bearing minerals show thermal behavior distinct from those previously reported for dioctahedral chlorite and tosudite.

Petrographie investigation of drill cuttings from the Echassières area indicates that the two minerals were formed in an intermediate stage of hydrothermal alteration following an early stage characterized by formation of muscovite (2M1) at >350°C and before the latest stage characterized by deposition of kaolinite and randomly interstratified illite/smectite at < 100°C. Moreover, tosudite occurs in the upper part of the granite, whereas donbassite is restricted to the lower part, suggesting the formation of tosudite at lower temperatures.

We have found a class of circular radio objects in the Evolutionary Map of the Universe Pilot Survey, using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. The objects appear in radio images as circular edge-brightened discs, about one arcmin diameter, that are unlike other objects previously reported in the literature. We explore several possible mechanisms that might cause these objects, but none seems to be a compelling explanation.

Recently huge amount of dust Mdust ≃ 106−7M⊙ in galaxies at z = 7–8 has been discovered by ALMA observations. The suggested timescale of the dust production was a few–several×108 yr, while the stellar mass was several × 109M⊙. This amount of dust cannot be easily explained only by a supply from supernovae if we consider the dust destruction by reverse shocks. We propose that these values can be consistently explained if we take into account the grain growth in the interstellar medium (ISM). This scenario successfully reproduces the evolution of the dust mass, as well as the SFR, and stellar mass simultaneously. We conclude that even at such an early epoch of the Universe, the dust grain growth in the ISM plays a significant role in galaxies.

The spectral energy distribution (SED) model should treat the evolution of a galaxy from its birth. Dust in galaxies affects the formation and evolution of galaxies in various ways. For example, dust grains scatter and absorb stellar emitted ultraviolet (UV) photons and re-emit the radiation at infrared (IR) wavelengths. In this work, we construct a galaxy SED model based on our dust evolution model (Asano et al. 2013a,b, 2014) with a rigorous treatment of the chemical evolution. To reduce the computational cost, we adopt mega-grain approximation (MGA; (MGA; Inoue, 2005). MGA regards a high density dusty region as a huge size (10 pc) dust grain for calculating dust scattering. In this approximation, we can solve the radiative transfer easily and provide SEDs and attenuation curves of galaxies. This model can be used to fit any galaxy in the wavelength range of 10 nm-3 mm.

We present ALMA detection of the [O iii] 88 μm line and 850 μm dust continuum emission in a Y-dropout Lyman break galaxy, MACS0416_Y1. The [O iii] detection confirms the object with a spectroscopic redshift to be z = 8.3118±0.0003. The 850 μm continuum intensity (0.14 mJy) implies a large dust mass on the order of 4×106M⊙. The ultraviolet-to-far infrared spectral energy distribution modeling, where the [O iii] emissivity model is incorporated, suggests the presence of a young (τage ≍ 4 Myr), star-forming (SFR ≍ 60M⊙yr−1), and moderately metal-polluted (Z ≍ 0.2Z⊙) stellar component with a stellar mass of 3 × 108M⊙. An analytic dust mass evolution model with a single episode of star formation does not reproduce the metallicity and dust mass in ≍ 4 Myr, suggesting an underlying evolved stellar component as the origin of the dust mass.

The present study, which was carried out on a deep weathering profile of quartz diorite in the San'in district, Japan, along with two lateritic samples from India and Sri Lanka, provides convincing evidence supporting the dissolution and recrystallization mechanism for the halloysite-to-kaolinite transformation during weathering of crystalline rocks. In all the samples studied, tubular halloysite formed prior to kaolinite via the dissolution of feldspars and precipitation from solution. The crystal size distribution of tubular halloysite formed early was characterized by a lognormal curve having a positive asymmetry. When the activity of water decreased in the weathering profile, halloysite as well as goethite began to dehydrate, which acted as a trigger for dissolving halloysite. The heterogeneous nucleation of kaolinite took place on the edges and in the shrinkage pores of dehydrated halloysite tubes. The topotactic relationship of b*halloysite//b*kaolinite was kept between the substrate halloysite and the product kaolinite in the incipient growing stages of kaolinite. As a consequence, early formed halloysite transforms to kaolinite in a cannibalistic manner over a long period of time, owing to the intermittent supply of solution undersaturated with respect to halloysite in natural open systems.

Zwitterionic porphyrin (tetrakis {4-(2-carboxyethyl)pyridinio}porphyrin (TPyCP)) with four pyridinium and carboxyl groups in the molecule was synthesized. The adsorption behaviour of TPyCP on the montmorillonite clay surface was examined in an aqueous colloidal solution. While the adsorption maximum λmax of TPyCP was 424 nm in water, it shifted to longer wavelengths on complex formation with clay. The λmax on the exfoliated clay surface was 450 nm, and that in the stacked clay sheets was 471 nm, respectively. Under alkaline conditions ([NaOH] = 2 × 10–4 M), the stacking behaviour of the clay was completely suppressed. It emerged that anionic parts in the porphyrin molecule can suppress the stacking of clay sheets. Judging from the quantitative analysis, the maximum adsorption amount of TPyCP was 100% vs. cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the clay. As the adsorption density of TPyCP increased, λmax shifted slightly to longer wavelengths due to the interactions between adjacent porphyrins. When the loading level of TPyCP was 200% vs. CEC, the stacking of TPyCP was indicated. The average stacking layer number was calculated to be 1.48. On the other hand, it is known that tetra cationic porphyrins without anionic parts do not form such stacking structures. Thus, it seems that zwitterionic porphyrin has the potential to form a three dimensional structure through electrostatic interactions between porphyrins on the clay surface.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Ross River virus (RRV) of the genus Alphavirus, family Togaviridae are mainly transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and the symptoms they cause in patients are similar to dengue. A chikungunya (CHIK) outbreak re-emerged in several Asian countries during 2005–2006. This study aimed to clarify the prevalence of CHIKV infection in suspected dengue patients in six countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Seven hundred forty-eight serum samples were from dengue-suspected patients in South Asia and Southeast Asia, and 52 were from patients in Fiji. The samples were analysed by CHIKV IgM capture ELISA, CHIKV IgG indirect ELISA and focus reduction neutralization test against CHIKV or RRV. CHIK-confirmed cases in South Asia, particularly Myanmar and Sri Lanka, were 4·6%, and 6·1%, respectively; and in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, were 27·4%, 26·8% and 25·0%, respectively. It suggests that CHIK was widely spread in these five countries in Asia. In Fiji, no CHIK cases were confirmed; however, RRV-confirmed cases represented 53·6% of suspected dengue cases. It suggests that RRV is being maintained or occasionally entering from neighbouring countries and should be considered when determining a causative agent for dengue-like illness in Fiji.

C band backscatter parameters contain information about the upper snowpack/firn in the dry snow zone. The wide incidence angle diversity of the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) gives unprecedented characterisation of backscatter anisotropy, revealing the backscatter response to climatic forcing. The A (isotropic component) and M2 (bi-sinusoidal azimuth anisotropy) parameters are investigated here, in conjunction with data from atmospheric and snowpack models, to identify the backscatter response to surface forcing parameters (wind speed and persistence, precipitation, surface temperature, density and grain size). The long-term mean A parameter is successfully recreated with a regression using these drivers, indicating strong links between the A parameter and precipitation on long timescales. While the ASCAT time series is too short to determine which factors drive observed trends, factors influencing the seasonal and short timescale variability are revealed. On these timescales, A strongly responds to the propagation of surface temperature cycles/anomalies downward through the firn, via direct modulation of the dielectric constant. The influence of precipitation on A is small at shorter timescales. The M2 parameter is controlled by wind speed and persistence, through modification of monodirectionally-aligned surface roughness. This variability indicates that throughout much of coastal Antarctica, a microwave ‘snapshot’ is generally not representative of longer-term conditions.

Here we discuss requirements for high performance and solution processable organic semiconductors, by presenting a systematic investigation of 7-alkyl-2-phenyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophenes (Ph-BTBT-Cn’s). We found that the solubility and thermal properties of Ph-BTBT-Cn’s depend systematically on the substituted alkyl-chain length n. The observed features are well understood in terms of the change of molecular packing motif with n: The compounds with n ≤ 4 do not form independent alkyl chain layers, whereas those with n ≥ 5 form isolated alkyl chain layers. The latter compounds afford a series of isomorphous bilayer-type crystal structures that form two-dimensional carrier transport layers within the crystals. We also show that the Ph-BTBT-C10 afford high performance single-crystalline field-effect transistors the mobility of which reaches as high as 15.9 cm2/Vs. These results demonstrate a crucial role of the substituted alkyl chain length for obtaining high performance organic semiconductors and field-effect transistors.
