This paper contributes to scholarship on the long experience of deindustrialization. It emphasizes contemporary place-making in navigating the much-changed socioeconomic landscapes that the closure of mills, mines, shipyards and factories have left behind. The ‘half-life of deindustrialization' suggests these experiences have been received through understandings of labour and community with origins in the industrial era. ‘Tracks of the Past' was a school-based education project themed around workers' occupation of Caterpillar's earth-moving machinery plant in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The occupation was a response to Caterpillar's shock closure announcement and the loss of 1,200 jobs. It lasted 103 days between January and April 1987 when closure was reluctantly conceded. A Caterpillar Workers Legacy Group (CWLG) commemorated the occupation's thirtieth anniversary. During 2018, academics collaborated with the CWLG to develop a curriculum for a local high school class. ‘Tracks' produced lessons where students engaged with archival sources and physical objects, interviewed members of the CWLG and conducted online research. The ‘learning journey' montages that the students produced combined conversations in 2018 with sources from three decades earlier, often reflecting on the occupation as a historical episode in a highly localised context. Others implicated the closure within an international pattern, linking Caterpillar’s divestment to the actions of multinationals in the contemporary global economy. In neither case did the invocation of the occupation lead to a straightforward translation of the occupation into contemporary workplace justice issues as the CWLG had hoped. However, these results did suggest a creative deployment of the past that rationalised the occupation with reference to contemporary deindustrialized contexts. These findings demonstrate the utility of the half-life through a lingering industrial past, but also demonstrate the need to conceptualise agents or custodians of labour history and challenge the linearity of passing time that an incrementally receding industrial era implicates.

Records at the Endulen Hospital in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), Tanzania, reveal that soil-transmitted helminth infections and protozoa are consistently in the top ten diagnoses for Maasai pastoralists, indicating a significant public health concern. Nevertheless, Maasai pastoralist adaptations to life in close proximity to livestock and to unreliable access to water raise important questions about experiences of, and resiliency to, parasitic infections. Though these infections are particularly prevalent among youth in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), a focus on resiliency highlights local capacity to recover from and prevent illness. For instance, how is human parasitism perceived and experienced among communities displaying behaviours that studies have associated with transmission of diarrhoeal diseases, such as open defecation? Among these communities, how is parasitism seen to impact the health and development of children? And, what resources are available to endure or mitigate this heavy disease burden among affected communities? This study draws on formative research carried out in May 2014 in anticipation of an innovative school-based and youth-driven water, sanitation and hygiene education intervention rolled out in two boarding schools in the NCA in subsequent months. The initiative is grounded in a One Health approach to health promotion, drawing on partnerships in medicine, public health and veterinary medicine to appreciate the unique interactions between humans, animals and the environment that shape well-being among pastoralist communities. Qualitative data generated through group discussions with secondary school youth (n=60), Maasai teachers (n=6) and a women’s group (n=8) in the NCA convey existing knowledge of the prevalence, prevention and treatment of human parasitism. An underlying principle of the larger initiative is to engage youth as creative agents of change in developing and sustaining locally relevant health promotion strategies. Findings highlight practical knowledge around certain ‘neglected tropical diseases’, namely helminths, among pastoralist communities in the NCA, in turn feeding into the development of the science fair and related interventions.

Large-scale sequencing tests, including whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing (WES/WGS), are rapidly moving into clinical use. Sequencing is already being used clinically to identify therapeutic opportunities for cancer patients who have run out of conventional treatment options, to help diagnose children with puzzling neurodevelopmental conditions, and to clarify appropriate drug choices and dosing in individuals. To evaluate and support clinical applications of these technologies, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) and National Cancer Institute (NCI) have funded studies on clinical and research sequencing under the Clinical Sequencing Exploratory Research (CSER) program as well as studies on return of results (RoR). Most of these studies use sequencing in real-world clinical settings and collect data on both the application of sequencing and the impact of receiving genomic findings on study participants. They are occurring in the context of controversy over how to obtain consent for exome and genome sequencing.

This white paper identifies knowledge gaps and new challenges in healthcare epidemiology research, assesses the progress made toward addressing research priorities, provides the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) Research Committee's recommendations for high-priority research topics, and proposes a road map for making progress toward these goals. It updates the 2010 SHEA Research Committee document, “Charting the Course for the Future of Science in Healthcare Epidemiology: Results of a Survey of the Membership of SHEA,” which called for a national approach to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and a prioritized research agenda. This paper highlights recent studies that have advanced our understanding of HAIs, the establishment of the SHEA Research Network as a collaborative infrastructure to address research questions, prevention initiatives at state and national levels, changes in reporting and payment requirements, and new patterns in antimicrobial resistance.

We investigated whether manipulating the perceived novelty of nameless objects would influence two-year-olds' tendency to map novel words to these objects. In Experiment 1, children who had been pre-exposed to target nameless objects were more likely to map novel words onto those objects than children who were not pre-exposed to the objects or children who were pre-exposed to non-target members of the nameless object categories. In Experiment 2, children who were pre-exposed to a nameless object were more likely to assign the novel label to that object than to either a familiar object or an unfamiliar object that had not been pre-exposed. The results of these studies suggest that reducing the novelty of nameless objects increases two-year-olds' tendency to map a novel word to a nameless object.

These two books concern major chapters in the history of mass housing: Amsterdam in the first two decades of the century and “Red Vienna.” Both programs were models of state welfare reform, but the political contexts are totally at odds: Amsterdam, with its settlement initiatives achieved through a corporatist compromise among moderate parties, and Vienna, where the Social Democrats attempted literally to build socialism in the midst of “a highly charged, often violent political conflict between left and right” (Blau, 13).

Managing occupational exposures to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in the healthcare workplace remains both controversial and complex. Healthcare workers' perceptions of risk for occupational transmission of HIV-1, their knowledge of risk-reduction strategies, and their perceptions about appropriate postexposure management are all derived from an intricate interplay of scientific, political, social, and emotional sources. Following an occupational exposure to blood or blood-containing body fluids, a healthcare worker's immediate emotional response may be extreme gut-wrenching anxiety, with perceptions often biased by ignorance, uncertainty, and fear. The healthcare worker's postinjury emotional and psychological stress can be extraordinary; postinjury therapy, of necessity, must integrate medical, physical, psychological, and psychosocial aspects of care. Clinical decisions regarding HIV-1 injury management, therefore, are based not only on available scientific and medical information but also on measured actions designed to manage and presumably to diminish the profound anxiety almost invariably associated with an occupational exposure to HIV-1. In stark contrast to this common and extreme emotional reaction, the likelihood of disease transmission from such occupational exposures is relatively small.

In this article, we will discuss a series of questions and issues typically encountered when a healthcare worker sustains an occupational exposure to HIV-1.

Our nation's attention has recently been focused on the resurgence of tuberculosis as a significant public health problem. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic has played a seminal role in this development. In addition, the concurrent increase in poverty and homelessness, particularly in our inner cities, and the changes in patterns of immigration into the United States have also played a contributing role. Finally, the deterioration of our public health infrastructure, together with decreasing access to medical care, served as the perfect breeding environment for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection to gain new and dangerous ground. The abrupt change in 1985 in the persistently downward trend in the incidence of tuberculosis cases in the U.S. signaled the first “shot across the bow” in what is now a full-scale war against this old enemy. In the 1990s, tuberculosis has now resumed its historical position of importance and danger in our inner cities. Tuberculosis control strategies -- once thought to be destined solely for the history books -- have regained public health and institutional attention, especially in settings serving inner-city, impoverished, or immunosuppressed populations.

The emergence and widespread distribution of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have clearly signaled the most important epidemic of the 20th century. In responding to this epidemic in a compassionate and rational voice, the infection control practitioners-physicians, nurses and technologists-have played a crucial role in healthcare delivery. A great deal of information has resulted from numerous scientific studies. Because of the volume and complexity of data currently being generated, the Editorial Board of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology has invited Dr. David K. Henderson to initiate a new column on AIDS. He is an internationally recognized expert who has agreed to edit this column for the journal.
