This scoping review aimed to identify questionnaire-based dietary assessment methods for use in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHNS) in Japan. The search was conducted in three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Ichushi) to identify questionnaire such as food frequency questionnaire and dietary history questionnaire validated against dietary recalls or food records for the intakes of both food groups and nutrients among Japanese adults. Study quality was assessed based on previously developed criteria. We extracted the questionnaire characteristics and the design and results of the validation studies. We identified 11 questionnaires, with the number of food items ranging from 40 to 196, from 32 articles of good quality. In the validation studies, participants were aged 30–76 years and 90% of the articles used ≥3 d dietary records as reference. The number of nutrients and food groups with a group-level intake difference within 20% against the reference method ranged from 1 to 30 and 1 to 11, respectively. The range of mean correlation coefficients between questionnaire and reference methods were 0.35–0.57 for nutrients and 0.28–0.52 for food groups. When selecting a survey instrument in the NHNS from the 11 existing questionnaires identified in this study, it is important to select one with high group-level comparison and correlation coefficient values on the intended assessment items after scrutinizing the design and results of the validation study. This review may serve as a reference for future studies that explore dietary assessment tools used for assessing dietary intake in specific representative populations.

Scanning electron microscopy operated at cryogenic temperature (cryo-SEM) is a powerful tool for investigating surface and cross-sectional nanostructures of water-containing samples. Typically, cryo-SEM samples are frozen just before observation in specific metal carriers. However, pre-frozen samples are also of interest, such as frozen food and freeze-stored animal samples. In such cases, sample mounting with a defined orientation is required, but there has been a lack of ideal conductive adhesives that can be used without increasing the sample temperature. Here, we developed a mixture of graphite oxide and 1,3-butanediol as an adhesive, capable of gluing samples at dry-ice temperature and is frozen below that temperature. Dispersion of graphite oxide increased the conductivity and reduced the charge-up contrast. Acquisition of energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum, cross-sectional ion milling, and high-resolution imaging were successfully achieved using the adhesive. We tested and confirmed the usefulness of this new adhesive by applying it to cryo-SEM surface imaging of diatomite, freeze-fractured cross-sectional imaging of chicken liver, and ion milling cross-sectional imaging of a deep-sea snail. The new adhesive is not only useful for food science and field-preserved biological samples but also potentially applicable to wider fields such as archaeological and biological samples preserved under permafrost.

Indoor localization technology, which can provide the location information of the target object or stochastic things, is becoming essential requirement for many applications and services such as Internet-of-Things (IoT), real-time control in the development of Fifth-generation (5G) technology. Leaky coaxial cable which can be used as antennas is able to detect the location of the user in a simple way due to its potential property. In this paper, we proposes a simple method to improve the localization accuracy of 2-D indoor localization using multiple LCX cables. In addition, we also evaluate the channel capacity loss due to the localization error of the LCX-MIMO using our proposed method.

Near-infrared (NIR) absorption in solar-control LaB6 nanoparticles (NPs) is derived from the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) at 1.3 eV, and accompanies an unclarified subpeak at 1.8 eV. As an origin of this subpeak, a disk-like particle shape of LaB6 NP has recently been proposed, besides the previously-proposed, milling-derived LaO phase. A series of heating experiments at 200–850 °C in air for LaB6 NPs pulverized with different media beads have been made, followed by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy observations, to clarify that LaB6 NPs oxidizes to amorphous phases B2O3 and La–B–O at 450–600 °C, and crystallize to LaB3O6 at 650–750 °C, without forming LaO or La2O3. Dielectric functions of LaO have been derived by first-principles calculations using sX-LDA, and Mie scattering calculations have been made for various sizes, shapes, and the ensembles, showing that LaO NPs, if existed, should exhibit an excessively-broadened absorption band with a blunt LSPR peak at 2.1 eV buried in several interband-transition absorptions at 1.2–4.0 eV. These analyses confirm that the observed 1.8 eV subpeak could not originate from LaO and support the nonspherical shape of NPs as the origin of the subpeak.

Delafossite CuYO2 and Ca doped CuYO2 were prepared by thermal decomposition of a metal-citric acid complex. The starting solution consisted of Cu acetate, Y acetate and Ca acetate as the raw materials. Citric acid was used as the chelating agent, and acetic acid and distilled water were mixed as a solvent. The starting solutions were heated at 723 K for 5 h after drying at 353 K. The obtained powders were amorphous and single phase of orthorhombic Cu2Y2O5 was obtained by heat-treated the amorphous powder at a temperature range between 1073 and 1373 K for 3 h in air. Furthermore, Heat-treating the obtained orthorhombic Cu2Y2O5 at above 1373 K in air caused it to decompose into Y2O3, CuO and Cu2O. On the other hand, the sample powder prepared from a starting solution without citric acid, i.e., single phase of orthorhombic Cu2Y2O5 could not be obtained under the same synthesis conditions as that for a solution with citric acid. We were able to obtain delafossite CuYO2 and Ca doped CuYO2 from orthorhombic Cu2Y2O5 under a low O2 pressure atmosphere at above 1223 K. The obtained delafossite CuYO2 composed hexagonal and rhombohedral phases. The color of the CuYO2 powder was light brown and that of Ca-doped CuYO2 was light green. Diffraction peaks in the XRD pattern were slightly shifted by doping Ca for CuYO2, and these peaks shifted toward to a high diffraction angle with an increasing amount of doped Ca. From these results, we concluded that Ca doped delafossite CuYO2 could be obtained by thermal decomposition of a metal-citric acid complex.

We have prepared a number of Pt-TM(transition metals) alloys with various TM elements and evaluated their catalytic abilities by means of hydrogenation of methyl acrylate. High catalytic activities are obtained when the crystalline structures are similar, i.e., fcc structure, indicating that the crystal structure of a catalyst plays an important role in hydrogenation of methyl acrylate. Furthermore, for a certain TM element, i.e., Mo, the catalytic activity is found to surpass that of Pt metal.

Boron (B) doped silicon nanowires (SiNWs) were synthesized by laser ablation. Local vibrational modes of B in SiNWs were observed by micro-Raman scattering measurements at room temperature. Broadening due to a coupling between the discrete optical phonon and a continuum of interband hole excitations was also observed in the Si optical phonon peak. This is called Fano broadening. These results prove that B atoms were doped in substitutional sites of crystalline Si core of SiNWs during laser ablation.

We report a successful demonstration of a position control technique for carbon nanotube growth catalyzed by an iron nano-dot array, which was fabricated by using electron beam induced chemical vapor deposition (EB-CVD). Point irradiation of an electron beam with ferrocene source gas produced an amorphous carbon dot containing iron atoms that were uniformly dispersed into each dot, and its position could be precisely controlled. Vacuum annealing of the ferrocene based dots induced segregation of iron nano-particles, whose size was almost proportional to the beam irradiation time. After removing the carbon residue, an ethanol CVD process carried out at 800°C under 40 mmHg of ethanol vapor induced carbon nanotube growth from the dots. Many grown nanotubes were very thin, being 0.7 to 1.8 nm in diameter. These diameters were much less than that of the bottom iron particles.
