The accurate estimation of expected survival in terminal cancer patients is important. The palliative performance scale (PPS) is an important factor in predicting survival of hospice patients. The purpose of this study was to examine how initial status of PPS and changes in PPS affect the survival of hospice patients in Korea.
We retrospectively examined 315 patients who were admitted to our hospice unit between January 2017 and December 2018. The patients were divided based on the PPS of ≥50% (group A) and ≤40% (group B). We performed survival analysis for factors associated with the length of survival (LOS) in group A. Based on the hospice team's weekly evaluation of PPS, we examined the effect of initial levels and changes in group A on the prognosis of patients who survived for 2 weeks or more.
At the time of admission to hospice, 265 (84.1%) patients were PPS ≥50%, and 50 (15.9%) were PPS ≤40%. The median LOS of PPS ≥50% and PPS ≤40% were 15 (2–158 days) and 9 (2–43 days), respectively. Male, gastrointestinal cancer, and lower initial PPS all predicted poor prognosis in group A. Male, gastrointestinal cancer, and a PPS change of 10% or greater, compared with initial status 1 week and 2 weeks of hospitalization, were all predictors of poor prognosis in group A patients who survived for 2 weeks or longer.
Significance of results
Our research demonstrates the significance of PPS change at 1 week and 2 weeks, suggesting the importance of evaluating not only initial PPS but also change in PPS.
A high molecular weight, photocurable inorganic-organic hybrid based on ladder-like poly(phenyl6-co-methacrylate4)silsesquioxanes (LPPMA64) was investigated as a flexible display substrate. Photocured free standing films with 40μm thickness showed high transparency (>95%), excellent thermal stability (Td >450°C), and low coefficient of thermal expansion (38ppm/K) without the use of reinforced glass fibers. Furthermore, these ladder-like structured materials did not require any thermal treatment processes due to the negligible amounts of uncondensed groups, thus simplifying manufacturing processing. These novel hybrid films present an alternative to organic plastics as flexible electronic device substrates due to their excellent optical and thermal properties.
In this paper, we prove that if K is any periodic link in S3 whose quotient link is a 2-bridge link, then one half of the degree of the reduced Alexander polynomial, the minimal genus, the free genus and the canonical genus of K are all the same. We also give criteria to determine whether a given periodic link has a 2-bridge link quotient and some properties of this kind of periodic link.
Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) / poly(siloxane-silsesquioxane) (PSQ-PSSQ) nanohybrid films were fabricated. The dielectric constant of the film was scaled down from 2.66 to 2.28 when the 30% PCL was added into poly(siloxane-silsesquioxane) matrix. The FE-SEM micrograph of poly(ε-caprolactone) / poly(siloxane-silsesquioxane) (PSQ-PSSQ) nanohybrid film shows nanoporous structure. The modulus and hardness of the film decrease with increasing film thickness. As PCL content increases, modulus and hardness of the films decreases.
In this paper, we show that the absolute value of the signature of the 2-parallel version of a link is less than or equal to the nullity of it and show that the signature, nullity, and Minkowski units of the 2-parallel version of a certain class of links are always equal to 0, 2, and 1 respectively.
In this article we define symmetric geodesies on conformal compactifications of Euclidean Jordan algebras and classify symmetric geodesics for the Euclidean Jordan algebra of all n × n symmetric real matrices. Furthermore, we show that the closed geodesics for the Euclidean Jordan algebra of all 2 × 2 symmetric real matrices are realised as the torus knots in the Shilov boundary of a Lie ball.
In this paper, we study periodic braid representations of periodic links. It is shown that no 2-bridge non-fibred knot has a periodic braid representation and conditions under which periodic links are fibred are given. We give a construction of all periodic links over a fixed factor link.
