Oral intake of Lactobacillus pentosus strain b240 (b240) has been shown to enhance the secretion of salivary secretory IgA in elderly adults. However, its clinical benefits remain to be determined. We tested the hypothesis that b240 exerts a protective effect against the common cold in elderly adults. The design of the present study was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (RCT) with parallel three-group comparison. For this purpose, 300 eligible elderly adults were randomly allocated to one of three groups, namely a placebo, low-dose or high-dose b240 group. Participants in the low-dose and high-dose b240 groups were given tablets containing 2 × 109 or 2 × 1010 cells, respectively, of heat-killed b240, while those in the placebo group were given tablets without b240. Each group consumed their respective tablets once daily for 20 weeks. The common cold was assessed on the basis of a diary. Change in quality of life was evaluated using the SF-36®. Of the total participants, 280 completed the 20-week RCT. The accumulated incidence rate of the common cold was 47·3, 34·8 and 29·0 % for the placebo, low-dose b240 and high-dose b240 groups, respectively (P for trend = 0·012). Lower incidence rates were consistently observed throughout the experimental period in the b240 groups (log-rank test, P= 0·034). General health perception, as determined by the SF-36®, dose-dependently increased in the b240 groups (P for trend = 0·016). In conclusion, oral intake of b240 significantly reduced the incidence rate of the common cold in elderly adults, indicating that b240 might be useful in improving resistance against infection through mucosal immunity.

The microstructural evolution of Fe–Mn–C austenitic steels, which exhibit outstanding high-ductile deformation in their plastic regions, was characterized by line-profile and texture analyses. The convolutional multiple whole profile fitting procedure was used for a line-profile analysis of 2θ−θ diffraction data to evaluate variations of crystallite size, dislocation density, and dislocation arrangement. A substantial refinement of the crystallite size proceeded at an early deformation stage. In addition, the dislocation density increased with an increase in the tensile strain. Texture evolution was characterized by the analysis of orientation distribution functions. Three texture components grew with an increase in the tensile strain. According to the pole figure describing the full width at half maximum (FWHM) distribution of the 220 reflection, the nontextured grains had more microstructural defects than the textured grains. To evaluate the microstructural defects in detail, the 220 reflection observed at each texture orientation was analyzed by the single-line-profile method. The crystallite size and dislocation density were almost comparable, irrespective of the kind of texture component. The crystallite size of the nontextured grains was also comparable to that of the textured grains, whereas the nontextured grains had a dislocation density several times that of the textured grains.

The growth of precipitates in a deformed Cu–Ni–Si alloy with an aging treatment and the rearrangement of dislocations were investigated using small-angle X-ray scattering method and XRD line-profile analysis. The small-angle X-ray scattering method was used for characterizing the growth behavior of the precipitates. The results showed that the precipitates grew gradually to a few nanometers in radius when aged under the condition that the alloy exhibited a maximum of the hardness due to precipitation hardening. The growth rate rose from the onset of the overaging, where the hardness started to decrease. The line-profile analysis of copper-based alloy diffraction peaks using modified Williamson–Hall and modified Warren–Averbach procedures yielded a variation in the dislocation densities of the alloy as a function of the aging time. The dislocation density of the alloy before the aging treatment was estimated to be 1.7×1015 m−2 and its high value was held up to the peak-aging time. With the onset of the overaging, however, the dislocation density distinctly decreased by about 1 order of magnitude indicating that a large amount of the dislocations rearranged to release the alloy from the high dislocation-density state. The results suggest that the massive rearrangement of dislocations was accompanied with coarsening of the precipitates.

We detected that Fas receptor (Fas) was expressed at transcriptional levels in oocytes/eggs and some granulosa cells of murine ovary, whereas, Fas ligand (FasL) was found to be strongly expressed in granulosa cells by means of in situ hybridisation. These results were supported by an indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) test with anti-Fas monoclonal antibody (mAb)/FasL Ab. The lysates from granulosa cells were precipitated by anti-FasL Ab, exhibiting a specific band at 40 kDa. When zona pellucida (ZP)-free eggs were incubated with granulosa cells in vitro, apoptosis (DNA fragmentation) was induced in the eggs, as detected by the terminal deoxynucleotide transferase mediated dUTP-nick end labelling (TUNEL) method. To examine whether FasL-bearing cells can induce apoptosis in eggs expressing Fas through molecular interaction between FasL and Fas, we employed a baculovirus expression system to generate FasL on the surface of Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) cells. The co-incubation of eggs with Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcNPV) and FasL transfected Sf9 (Sf9–FasL) cells in vitro was performed and resulted in the induction of apoptosis in eggs as detected by the TUNEL method. Apoptosis was absent in eggs co-incubated with AcNPV-1393 transfected Sf9 (Sf9−1393) cells. Thus, ovarian atresia was suggested to be induced by molecular interaction between FasL on granulosa cells and Fas on oocytes/eggs during oogenesis.

Observation of the internal ultrastructure of human chromosomes by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has frequently been attempted in spite of the difficulties in detaching metaphase chromosome spreads from the glass slide for further processing. In this study we have used a method in which metaphase chromosome spreads were prepared on a flexible thermoplastic membrane (ACLAR) film. To assess chromosome identity, a diamidino-phenylindole staining and karyotying was first done using a conventional cytogenetic system. The chromosome spreads were then fixed with 1% osmium tetroxide, stained with freshly prepared 2% tannic acid, dehydrated, and flat-embedded in epoxy resin. The resin sheet was easily detachable and carried whole chromosome spreads. By this method, TEM observation of chromosomes from normal human lymphocytes allowed a thorough examination of the ultrastructure of centromeres, telomeres, fragile sites, and other chromosomal regions. Various ultrastructural patterns including thick electron dense boundaries, less dense internal regions, and extended chromatin loops at the periphery of the chromosomes were discernible. Application of the present method to chromosome research is expected to provide comprehensive information on the internal ultrastructure of different chromosomal regions in relation to function.

The goal of this study was to examine the effect of the linguistic distance between a first language (L1) and a second language (L2) on neural activity during second language relative to first language processing. We compared different L1–L2 pairs in which different linguistic features characterize linguistic distance. Chinese and Korean native speakers were instructed to perform sentence comprehension tasks in two L2s (English and Japanese) and their respective L1s. Activation while understanding English sentences relative to understanding sentences in L1 was greater for the Korean group than the Chinese group in the left inferior frontal gyrus, bilateral posterior superior temporal gyri, and right cerebellum. Activation while understanding Japanese sentences relative to understanding sentences in L1 was greater for the Chinese group than the Korean group in the anterior portion of the left superior temporal gyrus. The results demonstrated that the location of the L2–L1 processing-induced cortical activation varies between different L1–L2 pairs.

In the conventional historiography of Indonesia, the Second World War is equated with the Japanese occupation, and 1942 is a year of sudden change. This article argues that there was a prelude to these conditions. Changes in the global economic structure due to the Second World War, and countermeasures by the state authorities, began well before the Japanese invasion. The fundamental problem was the gradually deepening economic isolation that necessitated state intervention.

The molecular mechanisms leading to ovarian follicular atresia in the typical pathways of programmed cell death remain to be clarified. Here we have demonstrated that the apoptotic signalling pathway in MRL-+/+ (MRL/+) murine oocytes is through the Fas receptor followed by the activation of caspase-3. In contrast, we found that the aberrant expression and dysfunction of the mutant Fas receptor in MRL-lpr/lpr (MRL/lpr) murine oocytes caused by insertion of the early transposable element (ETn) into the Fas gene were associated with an inability to activate the caspase cascade (especially caspase-3) and to induce nuclear DNA fragmentation. These findings indicate that the induction of apoptosis in MRL/lpr murine oocytes did not occur in the presence of a defective Fas receptor lacking the death domain to trigger the caspase cascade, suggesting a failure to induce ovarian follicular atresia.

A photoemission study of dodecanethiol (DT)-capped Au nanoparticles on the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrates has been carried out in order to investigate in detail the electronic structures of metallic nanoparticles supported on the substrates. The present DT-capped Au nanoparticles show that the leading edge in the photoemission spectra near the Fermi level is not the Fermi edge, with the midpoint of the steep slope being away from the Fermi level. From these results, we discuss the electronic structures of DT-capped Au nanoparticles, especially nanoparticle-HOPG substrate interaction.

It has been reported that Zn atoms diffused from the Zn-doped p-InAlP cladding to the active layer in InGaAlP visible-light-emitting diodes cause a degradation of light output efficiency. A doping effect of the Zn atoms was then investigated using a Piezoelectric Photothermal Spectroscopy from a nonradiative transition point of view. The results indicate that the Zn-doping unexpectedly induces a decrease of the nonradiative component of the electron transitions above the band gap of the active layer. The experimental results are explained by considering that Zn doping cause the increase of both shallow and deep acceptor levels at the same time with the different rate for generation.

A magnetically enhanced capacitively coupled plasma source was developed for sputter deposition of Cu seed layers on sub 0.25µm via or contact holes. The plasma source is of planer parallel plate configuration where the Cu target plate is one of the electrodes. For the generation of plasma, 60 MHz rf power is selected in order to increase the plasma density. Additionally, a line cusp magnetic field is used to further increase the plasma density. The film deposition rate and uniformity obtained with this plasma source is∼200 nm/min and ∼±5%, respectively. The Cu film resistivity lies around 2 µωcm. This sputtering system yields good film coverage on bottom and sidewalls of via holes with an aspect ratio > 5; therefore, a perfect Cu filling could be realized by electroplating process.

We have carried out an angle-resolved photoemission study of double Ag nanofilm structures, composed of an outer Ag nanofilm / Cu barrier layer / inner Ag nanofilm / Cu(111) substrate. From these results, we discuss the electronic coupling between the quantized electronic states in the double Ag nanofilm structures with various configurations.

The current status of (Ba,Sr)TiO3 [BST] capacitor technology using a liquid source chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method is reviewed, focusing on the CVD techniques and the physical, electrical and process-integration-related properties of Ru/BST/Ru capacitors. The use of a new titanium metalorganic (MO) source, titanium bis(tert-butoxy) bis(dipivaloylmethanato) [Ti(tertBuO)2 (DPM)2] dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF) turned out to enable highly conformal deposition of BST films with a coverage ratio of ∼ 70 % for a trench with an aspect ratio of ∼ 5. Electrical properties of a 24-nm-thick BST film, deposited on a Pt substrate at a low substrate temperature of 480 °C, were also confirmed to be equivalent SiO2 thickness (teq) of ∼ 0.5 nm and leakage current of ∼ 1 ×10-7 A/cm2 at 1 V. As for the Ru/BST/Ru capacitors, no deteriorations of Ru electrode and BST/Ru interface were observed after 750 °C post-annealing experiment, showing good thermal stability of Ru as a practical electrode material. Although current leak through Ru/BST/Ru capacitors slightly increased after the H2 annealing, such degradation in the leakage properties was restored by post-annealing in N2 ambience. Integrated Ru/BST/Ru capacitors with a 30-nm-thick CVD-BST film were fabricated by 0.5 μm ULSI technology, and low leakage current was confirmed for the stacked capacitors. Regarding the reproducibility of BST deposition by the liquid source CVD method, the deviation ratio of ∼ ± 2.3 % in film thickness was obtained for ∼ 100 successive depositions, thickness uniformity across the wafers was ∼ ± 1.1 %. The above results imply the potential applicability of BST capacitor technology using a liquid source CVD method for Gbit-scale DRAMs.

In the present study we examined the immune-enhancing effect of a nucleoside-nucleotide mixture on the non-specific T-cell immune functions of senescence-accelerated mice (SAM) fed on a low-protein diet. The immune functions studied were in vitro thymic and splenic cell lymphoproliferative responses to phytohaemagglutinin, lipopolysaccharide and concanavalin A and their production of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-γ (INF-γ) in response to mitogen stimulation. SAMP8 mice aged 3 and 6 months were used. In each age group, mice were fed on diets containing either 50g casein/kg, 50 g casein/kg supplemented with 5 g nucleoside-nucleotide mixture/kg or 200 g casein/kg for 3 weeks. The supplemented 3- and 6-month-old mice had higher (P<O·O5) thymic and splenic cell counts compared with the low-protein group. In both age groups of mice, concanavalin A induced higher (P<0·05) total thymic and splenic lymphoproliferative responses for the nucleoside-nucleotide mixture-supplemented group compared with the 50 g casein/kg dietary groups. Thymic and splenic production of IL-2 was higher for the 3-month-old mice in both the supplemented and the 200 g casein/kg dietary groups. INF-γ production in the supplemented 3-month-old group and the 6-month-old 200 g casein/kg dietary group was higher (P<0·05) compared with the other groups. Overall the supplemented 3-month-old mice exhibited both higher lymphoproliferative responses and production of cytokines compared with the supplemented 6-month-old mice. The results indicate that early nucleoside-nucleotide mixture supplementation may enhance the immune response in protein-deprived SAMP8 mice
