In a previous study at Harper Adams University College (Marsh et al., 2007) the progeny from Limousin bulls with either a Top 1% Beef Value (LM44) or Top 10% Beef Value (LM30) were reared through to slaughter on a cereal beef system. The calves sired by the Top 1% Beef Value bull recorded significantly higher daily liveweight gains, daily carcase gain, slaughter weights, carcase weights, improved conformation scores and carcase values. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the performance of Limousin cross Holstein-Friesian bull and heifer calves sired by bulls with either a Top 1% or Bottom 1% Beef Value.
Phased VLA observations of the Galactic center magnetar J1745-2900 over 8-12 GHz reveal rich single pulse behavior. The average profile is comprised of several distinct components and is fairly stable over day timescales and GHz frequencies. The average profile is dominated by the jitter of relatively narrow pulses. The pulses in each of the four profile components are uncorrelated in phase and amplitude, although the occurrence of pulse components 1 and 2 appear to be correlated. Using a collection of the brightest individual pulses, we verify that the index of the dispersion law is consistent with the expected cold plasma value of 2. The scattering time is weakly constrained, but consistent with previous measurements, while the dispersion measure DM = 1763+3−10 pc cm−3 is lower than previous measurements, which could be a result of time variability in the line-of-sight column density or changing pulse profile shape over time or frequency.
Agroecosystem decision support systems typically rely on some types of weather data. Although many new digital weather and forecast datasets are gridded data, the current authors feel that evaluating previous methods with data of increased archive length is critical in aiding the transition to new datasets that lack extensive archives. To that end, the present paper reviews the improvements made to an artificial neural network for forecasting weather-based potato late blight (Phytophthora infestans) risk at 26 locations in the Great Lakes region. Accuracies of predictions made using an early model, developed in 2007, are compared with accuracies of predictions made using a new 10-year hourly optimized model. In nearly every comparison by month, forecast lead time and spatial region, the newly optimized model is more accurate, especially when the weather is conducive to high disease levels.
Characterization of self-similarity properties of turbulence in magnetized plasma is being carried out in DC glow discharge plasma. The time series floating potential fluctuation experimental data are acquired from the plasma by Langmuir probe. Continuous wavelet transform (CWT) analysis considering db4 mother wavelet has been applied to the experimental data and self-similarity properties are detected by evaluating the Hurst exponent from the wavelet variance plotting. From the CWT spectrum, effort is made to extract a highly correlated frequency by locating the brightest spot. Accordingly, those signals are treated for finding out correlation dimension and the Liapunov exponent so that the exact frequency responsible for the chaotic behavior could be found out.
The energies and configurations of interstitials and vacancies in the ordered compound CuTi were calculated using atomistic simulation. Vacancies created by the removal of either a Cu or Ti atom resulted in a vacant Cu site, with an antisite defect in the latter case. The vacancy at the Cu site was found to be very mobile within two adjacent (001) Cu planes, resulting in two dimensional migration. Interstitials created by inserting either a Cu or Ti atom had complicated configurations containing one or more antisite defects.

The fast ignitor concept for inertial confinement fusion relies on the generation of hot electrons, produced by a short-pulse ultrahigh intensity laser, which propagate through high-density plasma to deposit their energy in the compressed fuel core and heat it to ignition. In preliminary experiments designed to investigate deep heating of high-density matter, we used a 20 joule, 0.5–30 ps laser to heat solid targets, and used emission spectroscopy to measure plasma temperatures and densities achieved at large depths (2–20 microns) away from the initial target surface. The targets consisted of an Al tracer layer buried within a massive CH slab; H-like and He-like line emission was then used to diagnose plasma conditions. We observe spectra from tracer layers buried up to 20 microns deep, measure emission durations of up to 200 ps, measure plasma temperatures up to Te=650 eV, and measure electron densities above 1023 cm−3. Analysis is in progress, but the data are in reasonable agreement with heating simulations when space-charge induced inhibition is included in hot-electron transport, and this supports the conclusion that the deep heating is initiated by hot electrons.
A case of chrondrosarcoma of the petrous temporal bone is presented. Chondrosarcomas rarely occur intracranially and typically present as a petrous apex mass. The dilemmas faced in the diagnosis and treatment of petrous apex chondrosarcomas are discussed. This case also gives interesting insight into the natural history of this tumour.
Non-secreting paragangliomas are rare tumours usually present in the head and neck. We describe an unusual case of familial paraganglioma with cranial nerve palsies. After exhaustive investigation, a vagal paraganglioma was found and excised. The positive family history of paraganglioma was of significance, although this was only present in one of five generations. The diagnosis and management of non-secreting paragangliomas is discussed.
