Due to genetic selection for fast growth and high breast meat yield, commercial strains of broiler chickens and broiler breeders are predisposed to high feed intake; however, feeding broiler breeders ad libitum impairs their health and reproductive performance. Broiler breeders are feed-restricted throughout rearing to maintain health and performance, yet feed restriction results in hunger, feeding frustration and lack of satiety. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of alternative feeding strategies, including feed additives (separately or combined) and a fixed non-daily feeding schedule, on the feeding motivation and welfare of broiler breeders during rearing. At 3 weeks of age, 180 Ross 308 breeder pullets were allocated to 90 cages and fed with one of five isocaloric treatments: (1) daily control diet (control), (2) daily calcium propionate diet (CaP), (3) daily soybean hull diet (SBH), (4) daily alternative diet (alternative: CaP + SBH) and (5) 4/3 control diet (four on-feed days and three non-consecutive off-feed days per week). The CaP diet included calcium propionate at 1.4% from 3 to 6 weeks of age, and at 3.2% from 7 to 12 weeks of age, and the SBH diet contained soybean hulls included at 40%. The alternative diet included both soybean hulls and calcium propionate at the same inclusion rate as the SBH and CaP diets, respectively. Pullets were weighed and scored for feather coverage every week. A feed intake test was conducted at 3, 4, 8, 10 and 11 weeks of age for 10 min during on- and off-feed days. At 12 weeks of age, feather samples were analysed for fault bars. Data were analysed using linear mixed regression models, with cage nested in the models and age as a repeated measure. At 4 weeks of age, pullets fed soybean hull-enriched diets (SBH and alternative diets) and those on the 4/3 schedule had lower feed intake than control pullets (P = 0.02). Feathers from pullets fed the SBH diet had fewer fault bars than those fed the CaP diet (P = 0.04). The results indicated that the inclusion of soybean hulls (alone or combined with calcium propionate) and a 4/3 feeding schedule can reduce feeding motivation of broiler breeders during early rearing.

In the early treatment of schizophrenia, insight and cognitive disorders are key components in the observance and the functional prognosis of patients.

This study aims to evaluate the impact of neurocognitive rehabilitation and psycho information programs on the quality of insight in a population of 20 schizophrenic patients.

Results show a correlation between the extent of cognitive disorders and the quality of insight as well as with the efficiency of specific treatment programs.

The study emphasizes close links between improvement of cognitive skills and the quality of insight in this population.

The new mineral mössbauerite (IMA2012−049), Fe63+O4(OH)8[CO3]·3H2O, is a member of the fougèrite group of the hydrotalcite supergroup. Thus, it has a layered double hydroxide-type structure, in which brucite-like layers [Fe63+O4(OH)8]2+ are intercalated with CO32− anions and water molecules. Mössbauerite is the fully oxidized analogue of fougèrite and trébeurdenite, related to them chemically by the exchange of (Fe3+O2−) with (Fe2+OH−). Mössbauerite, intimately intergrown with trébeurdenite, was discovered in intertidal gleys from Mont Saint-Michel Bay, France, along with quartz, feldspars and clay minerals. Mössbauerite is formed by the oxidation of the other members of the fougèrite group. Like them, it occurs as μm-scale platelets in gleys with restricted access to atmospheric O and decomposes rapidly when exposed to air. Identification and characterization of these minerals has relied on an electrochemical study of synthetic analogues and Mössbauer spectroscopy, which inspired the name of the new mineral.

Unlike fougèrite and trébeurdenite, which are blue-green, pure synthetic mössbauerite is orange in colour. Detailed optical and other physical properties could not be determined because of the small platelet size and instability. The hardness is probably 2−3, by analogy with other members of the supergroup and the density, calculated from unit-cell parameters, is 2.950 g/cm3. Synchrotron X-ray data indicate that the natural material is a nanoscale intergrowth of 2T and 3T polytypes; the latter probably has the 3T7 stacking sequence. The corresponding maximum possible space group symmetries are Pm1 and P3m1. Unit-cell parameters for the 3T cell are a = 3.032(7) Å, c = 22.258(4) = 367.420 Å and Z = ½.

Mössbauer spectroscopy at 78 K indicates that two distinct Fe3+ environments exist in a 2:1 ratio. These are interpreted to be ordered within each layer, but without the development of a threedimensional superlattice. Mössbauerite undergoes gradual magnetic ordering at 70−80 K to a ferromagnetic state, below which it splits into three sextets S1m, S2m and S3m, as measured at 15 K, and shows the same intensity ratio ½:⅙:⅓ as the three doublets for fougèrite D1f, D2f, D3f in the paramagnetic state at 78 K. This suggests that there is also short-range coupling of interlayer carbonate anions with respect to the octahedral layers and that the 2D long-range order of carbonates in interlayers remains unchanged.

For decades antimonials were the drugs of choice for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), but the recent emergence of resistance has made them redundant as first-line therapy in the endemic VL region in the Indian subcontinent. The application of other drugs has been limited due to adverse effects, perceived high cost, need for parenteral administration and increasing rate of treatment failures. Liposomal amphotericin B (AmB) and miltefosine (MIL) have been positioned as the effective first-line treatments; however, the number of monotherapy MIL-failures has increased after a decade of use. Since no validated molecular resistance markers are yet available, monitoring and surveillance of changes in drug sensitivity and resistance still depends on standard phenotypic in vitro promastigote or amastigote susceptibility assays. Clinical isolates displaying defined MIL- or AmB-resistance are still fairly scarce and fundamental and applied research on resistance mechanisms and dynamics remains largely dependent on laboratory-generated drug resistant strains. This review addresses the various challenges associated with drug susceptibility and -resistance monitoring in VL, with particular emphasis on the choice of strains, susceptibility model selection and standardization of procedures with specific read-out parameters and well-defined threshold criteria. The latter are essential to support surveillance systems and safeguard the limited number of currently available antileishmanial drugs.

At DLR’s Institute of Propulsion Technology, the prediction tools and multi-disciplinary optimisation strategies developed for turbofan engines have been extended to contra-rotating open rotors (CROR). Thereby the objective has been to appraise and improve the performance of CROR engines and thus to reduce their environmental impact. The present paper reviews the intermediate progress achieved in this scope. The prediction is based on analytical and CFD methods and covers the fields of engine performance analysis, aerodynamics and acoustics. The aerodynamic and acoustic results could be partly validated through the comparison to experimental data obtained from wind-tunnel tests. In a multi-disciplinary approach the aforementioned aspects are optimised together. First results of an aero-acoustic optimisation are presented. Furthermore this paper undertakes some comparison between high-bypass ratio turbofan engines and open-rotor concepts.

Inclusion of fermentable fibres in the diet can have an impact on the hindgut microbiome and provide numerous health benefits to the host. Potato fibre (PF), a co-product of potato starch isolation, has a favourable chemical composition of pectins, resistant and digestible starch, cellulose, and hemicelluloses. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of increasing dietary PF concentrations on the faecal microbiome of healthy adult dogs. Fresh faecal samples were collected from ten female dogs with hound bloodlines (6·13 (sem 0·17) years; 22·0 (sem 2·1) kg) fed five test diets containing graded concentrations of PF (0, 1·5, 3, 4·5 or 6 % as-fed; Roquette Frères) in a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square design. Extraction of DNA was followed by amplification of the V4–V6 variable region of the 16S rRNA gene using barcoded primers. Sequences were classified into taxonomic levels using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLASTn) against a curated GreenGenes database. Inclusion of PF increased (P< 0·05) the faecal proportions of Firmicutes, while those of Fusobacteria decreased (P< 0·05). Similar shifts were observed at the genus level and were confirmed by quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis. With increasing concentrations of PF, faecal proportions of Faecalibacterium increased (P< 0·05). Post hoc Pearson's correlation analysis showed positive (P< 0·05) correlations with Bifidobacterium spp. and butyrate production and Lactobacillus spp. concentrations. Overall, increases in the proportion of Faecalibacterium (not Lactobacillus/Bifidobacterium, as confirmed by qPCR analysis) and faecal SCFA concentrations with increasing dietary PF concentrations suggest that PF is a possible prebiotic fibre.

The two ternary phases W5As2.5P1.5 and Ni4Nb5P4 have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. Precise data for the two compounds were collected using CuKα1 radiation over the range 11°–140° 2θ. Unit cell refinements (space group I4/m) led to a=9.4729(3) Å, c=3.2414(2) Å (Dx=13.16 gcm−3) with M20=127, F30=91(0.0092,36) for W5As2.5P1.5 and a=9.9304(4) Å, c=3.5243(3) Å (Dx=7.87 gcm−3) with M20=179, F30=138(0.0068,32) for Ni4Nb5P4.

Nuclear energy holds the promise to provide vast amounts of reliable baseline electricity at commercially competitive costs with modest environmental impact. However, the future of nuclear energy lies beyond the current generation of light water reactors. Future reactors will be expected to provide additional improvements in safety, maintain high reliability, use uranium resources more efficiently, and produce lower volumes of less toxic solid wastes. Several advanced reactor concepts are under development to meet these demands. In most cases, these designs translate into higher operating temperatures and longer lifetimes, more corrosive environments, and higher radiation fields in which materials must reliably perform. This issue focuses on the materials challenges that will determine the feasibility of these advanced concepts and define the long-term future of nuclear power.

Synthesis of Pb(Zr1–xTix)O3 (PZT) on a single substrate using a high-throughput molecular-beam epitaxy technique was demonstrated. In situ synthesis of crystalline PZT at elevated substrate temperatures could not be achieved, as reevaporation of Pb (PbO) occurred and the partial pressure of O2 was insufficient to prevent formation of a PbPtx phase during deposition. Instead, ex situ postdeposition annealing was performed on PZT deposited at room temperature. Dense single phase PZT was prepared with a compositional range of 0.1 > x > 0.9, for film thicknesses up to 800 nm. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the grain size increased from 50 nm to ∼0.5 μm with increasing Zr-concentration and became more columnar. Raman, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy results revealed a morphotropic phase boundary between rhombohedral and tetragonal phases occurred at x ∼0.4 rather than at x = 0.47 in bulk ceramics. This was attributed to clamping arising from mismatch in thermal expansion between the film and substrate.

Current source inverters (CSI) associated to rectifiers are used in variable speed drives for the propulsion system onboard ships. The complete structure will generate frequency perturbations in the entire supply system which could become undesirable. In a first part, the modulation theory is applied to the ideal structure of a converter. The designs of the propulsion transformers and of the propulsion motor are considered in order to calculate the injected currents on both sides of the converters. Finally, those results are confronted to experimental ones obtained onboard an electric ship. Those results show a complete validation of the theoretical predictions.

The avian egg is a nutritious food and also a major source of biologically active compounds that are beneficial for human health. These biologically active molecules are widely used by pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. Egg proteins were previously studied using classical biochemical techniques such as chromatographic and electrophoretic separation and Edman sequence analysis. The development of molecular biology in the late 80's and the recent publication of the chicken genome sequence are major scientific advances leading to identification and characterization of a number of minor egg components that were not previously identified. Using recent data on the characterization of egg white and eggshell matrix proteins, we illustrate in this review recent developments in the biochemistry of the egg (proteomics) and in the molecular biology of the egg (cDNA and ESTs libraries, bioinformatic analysis of the chicken genome, transcriptomics). These methods have allowed the identification of hundreds of minor egg protein components with potential applications for industry. Functional studies to identify the biological activities of these novel egg protein components and to exploit their potential will form the next frontier of egg science.

Understanding the mechanical behaviour of metallic nanostructures is a key issue for their development. On the one hand, knowledge of the plastic behaviour at various temperatures is essential to control the synthesis, forming, and machining of such materials. Equally, a clear understanding of atomic and mesoscopic mechanisms, involving defects and their interactions, is essential for the control of ageing and functional properties. Regarding plastic deformation at room temperature, there is now evidence for unusual behaviour in nanostructured metals. In addition to high resistance and ductility, tensile testing reveals peculiar elasto-plastic deformation. Such behaviour was initially attributed to grain-boundary sliding. However, intergranular areas (including triple junctions) may possess special properties compared to their microcrystalline counterparts. For example, low activation energies have been measured for grain-boundary diffusion and it has been observed that grain-boundaries may act as dislocation sources and nucleation sites for deformation twinning.

In this paper, we report on analysis on bulk copper nanostructures. Grain-boundaries are studied, by cross-correlating information from mechanical tensile testing and structural analysis, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Macroscopic bulk specimens (with grain size of about 80 nm) are prepared by powder metallurgy techniques, modified to fit to the special properties of nanocrystalline powders. Processing includes coldisostatic pressing, sintering and differential extrusion. The powders used (grain size of 40 nm) are synthesised by evaporation and cryo-condensation of a metallic vapour within liquid nitrogen. Results on mechanical testing and structural analysis will be reported. Emphasis will be placed on the structure of grain-boundaries (type of grain-boundary, grain-boundary thickness) studied by TEM and high resolution TEM image analysed using the geometric phase technique. The nanostructure was revealed to be consist in agglomerate of nano-size grains separated by low angle grain-boundaries. Agglomerates are themselves separerated by general high angle boundaries. These observations will then be related to the unusual mechanical true stress-true strain curves of the metallic nanostructures.

The effect of dietary fibre on the gastric emptying rate of solids is controversial. Similarly, the mechanisms by which it modulates food intake are partially unknown. Gastric emptying and proximal v. distal stomach filling were evaluated in triplicate on four conscious pigs using scintigraphic imaging. Each animal received in an isoenergetic manner a concentrate low-fibre diet enriched in starch (S) and two high-fibre diets based on sugar beet pulp (BP) or wheat bran (WB). All meals had the same viscosity before ingestion (100.0–100.5 Pa.s). Viscosity of the gastric contents was measured in four additional animals fitted with a gastric cannula. The gastric emptying rate of BP diet was significantly slower than S and WB diets (t1/2 78.4 (SEM 5.68), 62.8 (sem 10.01) and 111.6 (sem 10.82) min for S, WB and BP diets respectively, P<0.05). For BP diet only, rate of distal stomach filling was steady during the first 120 min after the meal whereas that of S and WB diets decreased in an exponential manner. Numerous backflow episodes from the distal into the proximal stomach were observed for BP diet that generated the larger intragastric viscosity (0.26 (sem 0.03), 0.3 (sem 0.02) and 0.52 (sem 0.002) Pa.s for S, WB and BP respectively). In conclusion, viscosity of the meal or the percentage total fibre, unlike viscosity of the gastric contents, are poor predictors for emptying. The reduced emptying rate observed with BP is associated with major changes in intragastric distribution of the meal absent with WB and S diets.

Solid state phase equilibria in the ternary Fe-Ga-As diagram were determined at 600 °C using powder X-ray diffraction as experimental techniques. Very limited solid solubilities were measured in the binary constituent Fe-Ga and Fe-As compounds. In the Fe-rich part of the diagram, a ternary phase was evidenced which corresponds in fact to a solid solution into which Ga and As substitute one another on the same sublattice. This phase, which can be expressed by the general formula Fe3Ga2−xAsx (0.20 ≤ x ≤ 1.125), crystallizes in hexagonal symmetry; it is structurally derived from the NiAs type-structure (B81) and can be considered, owing to its c/a ratio (1.23 ≤ c/a ≤ 1.28) close to $\sqrt{3}/\sqrt{2}$, as hexagonal-pseudocubic. The original feature of this experimental diagram is the occurrence of a tie-line between this ternary phase and the semiconductor GaAs which differs significantly from the theoretical diagram, estimated from simplified calculations proposed by Schmid-Fetzer. In particular, it is the first time that such a ternary phase Mx(Ga, As)y (M = transition metal) is found to be in thermodynamic equilibrium with GaAs. This fact suggests that the solid state interdiffusions which occur during the annealing of a Fe/GaAs heterostructure could lead to a ferromagnetic, epitaxial and stable Fe3GaAs/GaAs contact.
