Weeds belonging to the Amaranthus family are most problematic for soybean producers. With Palmer amaranth evolving resistance to multiple herbicides labeled for use in soybean, producers seek new sites of action to integrate into season-long herbicide programs. Bayer CropScience plans to launch a Convintro™ brand of herbicides, one being a premixture that will include diflufenican (WSSA Group 12), metribuzin (WSSA Group 5), and flufenacet (WSSA Group 15), for use preemergence (PRE) in soybean. Research trials were conducted in Fayetteville and Keiser, AR, and Holt, MI, in 2022 and 2023 to evaluate the premixture in a season-long program in a dicamba-resistant soybean system. A 0.17:0.35:0.48 of the diflufenican:metribuzin:flufenacet (DFF-containing) premixture was applied PRE with different combinations of glyphosate, glufosinate, dicamba, and acetochlor at 28 [early-postemergence (EPOST)] and 42 [late-postemergence (LPOST)] days after planting (DAP). At the EPOST timing, the DFF-containing premixture provided >90% Palmer amaranth and prickly sida control. However, common ragweed, common lambsquarters, morningglory ssp., and annual grass control was ≤80% at this timing. When the LPOST applications occurred, treatments that had already received an EPOST application controlled prickly sida, morningglory ssp., Palmer amaranth, and annual grasses greater than those that had not, indicating the PRE application of the DFF-containing premixture was not sufficient to provide control of the weed spectrum through 42 days after planting. By 70 days after planting, all programs provided ≥93% control of all weeds evaluated. Herbicide programs that utilized the DFF-containing premixture PRE fb EPOST fb LPOST controlled common ragweed, common lambsquarters, morningglory ssp., and annual grasses greater than the one pass postemergence systems. In addition, all herbicide programs evaluated reduced Palmer amaranth seed production by >99%. However, producers that plan to utilize the DFF-containing premixture may need two postemergence herbicide applications to obtain high levels of weed control throughout the growing season.
Bayer Crop Science anticipates launching several premixtures for use in soybean, targeted at control of Palmer amaranth. One of the premixtures will contain diflufenican (Weed Science Society of America [WSSA] Group 12), metribuzin (WSSA Group 5), and flufenacet (WSSA Group 15) (DFF-containing premixture), offering an alternative site of action for soybean producers. Field experiments were conducted in Arkansas and Michigan to evaluate application timings of the DFF-containing premixture for soybean tolerance and weed control and possible cultivar tolerance differences to diflufenican and the DFF-containing premixture. Soybean injury from the 1X and 2X rates of the DFF-containing premixture ranged from 0% to 60% 14 d after planting (DAP), with injury increasing the closer the herbicide was applied to soybean emergence. Excluding the 2X rate applied 3 DAP in Arkansas in 2023, soybean injury was <20% regardless of location, site-year, application timing, and rate. For weed control experiments, only a 1X rate of the DFF-containing premixture was applied at the various application timings. Control of five weed species, encompassing broadleafs and grasses, ranged from 81% to 98%, regardless of application timing, by 28 DAP. By 42 DAP, weed control ranged from 71% to 97%, with the 14-d preplant application timing typically being the least effective. The DFF-containing premixture and diflufenican alone were applied PRE at 1X and 2X rates for the soybean cultivar study. Soybean metribuzin sensitivity did not affect the degree of crop response, even in a high-pH soil, and injury to soybean never exceeded 20%. Overall, the DFF-containing premixture will be a tool that soybean producers can integrate into a season-long herbicide program for use across the United States regardless of soybean cultivar.
Herbicide-resistant Palmer amaranth is creating additional challenges for producers choosing to adopt a furrow-irrigated rice production system due to the absence of a sustained flood, enabling extended weed emergence. Fluridone has been shown to control Palmer amaranth effectively in cotton production systems and was recently registered for use in rice. Experiments were initiated in 2022 and 2023 to evaluate 1) Palmer amaranth control and rice tolerance to preemergence- and postemergence-applied fluridone at a 0.5x (84 g ai ha-1) and 1x rate (168 g ai ha-1) on a silt loam soil and 2) the effect of various herbicide programs containing fluridone on Palmer amaranth biomass, seed production, and rough rice grain yield. Preemergence applications of fluridone at a 1x rate in combination with clomazone resulted in 84% control of Palmer amaranth 21 d after treatment (DAT). Fluridone, in combination with clomazone preemergence, caused up to 36% rice injury 21 DAT; however, early season injury did not negatively affect rice yields. Palmer amaranth biomass and fecundity were reduced with herbicide programs that included fluridone plus florpyrauxifen-benzyl, and, in some instances, there was no Palmer amaranth biomass or seed production following multiple applications of both herbicides. Fluridone- and florpyrauxifen-benzyl-based herbicide programs achieved effective control of Palmer amaranth when applied timely, but injury to hybrid rice is enhanced with preemergence applications of fluridone that are not permitted with the current label.
Background: After a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke, the long-term risk of subsequent stroke is uncertain. Methods: Electronic databases were searched for observational studies reporting subsequent stroke during a minimum follow-up of 1 year in patients with TIA or minor stroke. Unpublished data on number of stroke events and exact person-time at risk contributed by all patients during discrete time intervals of follow-up were requested from the authors of included studies. This information was used to calculate the incidence of stroke in individual studies, and results across studies were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. Results: Fifteen independent cohorts involving 129794 patients were included in the analysis. The pooled incidence rate of subsequent stroke per 100 person-years was 6.4 events in the first year and 2.0 events in the second through tenth years, with cumulative incidences of 14% at 5 years and 21% at 10 years. Based on 10 studies with information available on fatal stroke, the pooled case fatality rate of subsequent stroke was 9.5% (95% CI, 5.9 – 13.8). Conclusions: One in five patients is expected to experience a subsequent stroke within 10 years after a TIA or minor stroke, with every tenth patient expected to die from their subsequent stroke.
Phase three trials of the monoclonal antibodies lecanemab and donanemab, which target brain amyloid, have reported statistically significant differences in clinical end-points in early Alzheimer's disease. These drugs are already in use in some countries and are going through the regulatory approval process for use in the UK. Concerns have been raised about the ability of healthcare systems, including those in the UK, to deliver these treatments, considering the resources required for their administration and monitoring.
Aims
To estimate the scale of real-world demand for monoclonal antibodies for Alzheimer's disease in the UK.
Method
We used anonymised patient record databases from two National Health Service trusts for the year 2019 to collect clinical, demographic, cognitive and neuroimaging data for these cohorts. Eligibility for treatment was assessed using the inclusion criteria from the clinical trials of donanemab and lecanemab, with consideration given to diagnosis, cognitive performance, cerebrovascular disease and willingness to receive treatment.
Results
We examined the records of 82 386 people referred to services covering around 2.2 million people. After applying the trial criteria, we estimate that a maximum of 906 people per year would start treatment with monoclonal antibodies in the two services, equating to 30 200 people if extrapolated nationally.
Conclusions
Monoclonal antibody treatments for Alzheimer's disease are likely to present a significant challenge for healthcare services to deliver in terms of the neuroimaging and treatment delivery. The data provided here allows health services to understand the potential demand and plan accordingly.
Emergency departments are high-risk settings for severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) surface contamination. Environmental surface samples were obtained in rooms with patients suspected of having COVID-19 who did or did not undergo aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs). SARS-CoV-2 RNA surface contamination was most frequent in rooms occupied by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients who received no AGPs.
Allowing the use of two additional modes of action (MOAs), Enlist™ corn is a novelty in the continuum of herbicide-resistant crop development efforts that have occurred since the 1990s. Knowledge of Enlist corn tolerance to labeled herbicides and other herbicides within the same MOA for various use and/or exposure scenarios is not well established. Four site-year field experiments for preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) applications were conducted at sites in Fayetteville (2021 and 2022) and Tillar (2020 and 2021), Arkansas, to evaluate Enlist corn response following PRE or POST applications of synthetic auxin herbicides or those that inhibit acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase). A non-Enlist and an Enlist corn hybrid were used for each herbicide treatment to establish differential tolerance. Injury response to PRE application varied among site-years; clethodim was the only herbicide that occasionally caused significant (7% to 17%) injury to Enlist corn. None of the PRE treatments affected plant height, stand, or yield of Enlist corn; these responses were generally similar or better for Enlist corn compared to non-Enlist corn. Enlist corn showed significant injury to POST applications of florpyrauxifen-benzyl (>10%), fluazifop-P-butyl and quizalofop-P-ethyl (>5%), and clethodim and sethoxydim (>75%) 1 wk after application (WAA). These initial injury responses to clethodim and sethoxydim were generally reflected in Enlist corn yield; however, the minimal injury from fluazifop-P-butyl and quizalofop-P-ethyl did not affect yield. Injury to non-Enlist corn with POST-applied ACCase-inhibiting herbicides 2 WAA was >80%, resulting in a proportionate yield reduction. Even though florpyrauxifen-benzyl caused more initial injury to non-Enlist corn, yield reduction in non-Enlist corn was occasionally less than of Enlist corn, with both hybrids experiencing >75% yield reduction. In summary, Enlist corn may occasionally show transient injury even to labeled herbicides when applied POST, and even though the injury from florpyrauxifen-benzyl is initially mild, it nonetheless results in substantial yield loss.
Psychological stress has an established bi-directional relationship with obesity. Mindfulness techniques reduce stress and improve eating behaviours, but their long-term impact remains untested. CALMPOD (Compassionate Approach to Living Mindfully for Prevention of Disease) is a psychoeducational mindfulness-based course evidenced to improve eating patterns across a 6-month period, possibly by reducing stress. However, no long-term evaluation of impact exists.
Aims
This study retrospectively evaluates 2-year outcomes of CALMPOD on patient engagement, weight and metabolic markers.
Method
All adults with a body mass index >35 kg/m2 attending an UK obesity service during 2016–2020 were offered CALMPOD. Those who refused CALMPOD were offered standard lifestyle advice. Routine clinic data over 2 years, including age, gender, 6-monthly appointment attendance, weight, haemoglobin A1C and total cholesterol, were pooled and analysed to evaluate CALMPOD.
Results
Of 289 patients, 163 participated in the CALMPOD course and 126 did not. No baseline demographic differences existed between the participating and non-participating groups. The CALMPOD group had improved attendance across all 6-monthly appointments compared with the non-CALMPOD group (P < 0.05). Mean body weight reduction at 2 years was 5.6 kg (s.d. 11.2, P < 0.001) for the CALMPOD group compared with 3.9 kg (s.d. 10.5, P < 0.001) for the non-CALMPOD group. No differences in haemoglobin A1C and fasting serum total cholesterol were identified between the groups.
Conclusions
The retrospective evaluation of CALMPOD suggests potential for mindfulness and compassion-based group educational techniques to improve longer-term patient and clinical outcomes. Prospective large-scale studies are needed to evaluate the impact of stress on obesity and the true impact of CALMPOD.
Owing to their ultra-high accelerating gradients, combined with injection inside micrometer-scale accelerating wakefield buckets, plasma-based accelerators hold great potential to drive a new generation of free-electron lasers (FELs). Indeed, the first demonstration of plasma-driven FEL gain was reported recently, representing a major milestone for the field. Several groups around the world are pursuing these novel light sources, with methodology varying in the use of wakefield driver (laser-driven or beam-driven), plasma structure, phase-space manipulation, beamline design, and undulator technology, among others. This paper presents our best attempt to provide a comprehensive overview of the global community efforts towards plasma-based FEL research and development.
After the commercialization of Aripiprazole in Spain, two observational studies were proposed, one was conducted when the drug was first launched, and the other when the starting dose of Aripiprazole was modified, in order to understand the switching strategies, the effectiveness, tolerability and adherence to treatment in standard use conditions.
Patients and Methods:
Two multicenter, retrospective, observational studies were carried out involving 200 psychiatrists throughout Spain with approximate 1000 patients treated with Aripiprazole during the previous four months in each one of the studies during 2005 and 2006 respectively.
Results:
Both groups of patients had a very similar demographic profile that matches with the general schizophrenic population. In the first study, the main reasons for switching medication were low efficacy (56% of cases) and intolerance (35%), and 44% and 43% respectively in the second study. Despite the poor response to previous treatment, clinical evaluation of effectiveness and tolerability with Aripiprazole was very positive: In the first study, 76% of patients had very good or good effectiveness and tolerability was very good or good in 90%. In the second study, these values were 75% and 93%, respectively. Patterns of change from the previous treatment were switching in 75% of cases in the first study and in 60% in the second study.
Conclusions:
Effectiveness of treatment with Aripiprazole is good in patients who had a poor response to their previous antipsychotic treatments. The most frequent and effective pattern for change patients to Aripiprazole treatments is switching.
This review aims to understand the scope of the literature regarding mental health-related microaggressions towards people affected by mental health problems.
Methods
A scoping review was conducted to explore this question. Four electronic health-oriented databases were searched alongside Google Scholar. As per scoping review principles, the inclusion criteria were developed iteratively. The results of included studies were synthesised using a basic narrative synthesis approach, utilising principles of thematic analysis and thematic synthesis where appropriate.
Results
A total of 1196 records were identified, of which 17 met inclusion criteria. Of these, 12 were peer-reviewed journal articles, three were research degree theses and two were book chapters. Six included empirical studies were qualitative, four were quantitative and two employed a mixed-methods design. Within these, five qualitative studies aimed to describe the nature of mental health microaggressions experienced by people with mental health problems. Themes identified in a thematic synthesis of these five studies included stereotypes about mental illness, invalidating peoples' experience and blaming people with mental illness for their condition. The included publications informed on the perpetration of mental health microaggressions by family, friends, health professionals and social workers. In addition, two studies created scales, which were then used in cross-sectional surveys of the general public and community members to assess characteristics, such as right-wing political views, associated with endorsement of mental health microaggressions. A consensus definition of microaggressions emerged from the included studies: microaggressions are brief, everyday slights, snubs or insults, that may be subtle or ambiguous, but communicate a negative message to a target person based on their membership of a marginalised group, in this case, people affected by mental illness.
Conclusions
The study of mental health microaggressions is an emerging, heterogeneous field, embedded in the wider stigma and discrimination literature. It has been influenced by earlier work on racial microaggressions. Both can be ambiguous and contradictory, which creates difficulty defining the boundaries of the concept, but also underpins the key theoretical basis for the negative impact of microaggressions. Mental illness is a more concealable potential type of identity, so it follows that the reported perpetrators of microaggressions are largely friends, family and professionals. This has implications for intervening to reduce the impact of microaggressions. There are several challenges facing research in this area, and further work is needed to understand the impact of mental health microaggressions on people affected by mental health problems.
The production and use of masks at multiple scales and in diverse contexts is a millennia-long tradition in Mesoamerica. In this paper, we explore some implications of Mesoamerican masking practices in light of materiality studies and the archaeology of the senses. We also discuss a collection of 22 masks, miniature masks and representations of masks from the lower Río Verde valley of coastal Oaxaca, Mexico. The iconography of these artefacts as well as their recovery from well-documented archaeological contexts inform our interpretations of masking practices during an approximately 2000-year span of the Formative period (2000 bc–ad 250). Specifically, we argue that these masking-related artefacts index sociocultural changes in the region, from the first villages and the advent of ceramic technology during the Early Formative period (2000–1000 bc) to a time of increasing consolidation of iconographic influence in the hands of the elite in the final centuries before the Classic period. As indicated by their continued use today, masks have long been intimates of communal activities in Oaxaca.
Two new species of Oreocharis, O. tribracteata and O. rufescens, are described and a key to the species in Vietnam is provided. The new species have distinct features not previously, or rarely, observed in the genus, both showing the partial fusion of the calyx lobes into a tube, and the presence of three bracts in Oreocharis tribracteata.
Coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and viral hepatitis is associated with high morbidity and mortality in the absence of clinical management, making identification of these cases crucial. We examined characteristics of HIV and viral hepatitis coinfections by using surveillance data from 15 US states and two cities. Each jurisdiction used an automated deterministic matching method to link surveillance data for persons with reported acute and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections, to persons reported with HIV infection. Of the 504 398 persons living with diagnosed HIV infection at the end of 2014, 2.0% were coinfected with HBV and 6.7% were coinfected with HCV. Of the 269 884 persons ever reported with HBV, 5.2% were reported with HIV. Of the 1 093 050 persons ever reported with HCV, 4.3% were reported with HIV. A greater proportion of persons coinfected with HIV and HBV were males and blacks/African Americans, compared with those with HIV monoinfection. Persons who inject drugs represented a greater proportion of those coinfected with HIV and HCV, compared with those with HIV monoinfection. Matching HIV and viral hepatitis surveillance data highlights epidemiological characteristics of persons coinfected and can be used to routinely monitor health status and guide state and national public health interventions.
In this paper, we examine a Terminal Formative-period (150 bc–ad 250) bundled offering from the site of Cerro de la Virgen, located on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. The offering was emplaced below a prominent public building in the site's ceremonial centre and contained five stone objects, including a rain deity mask, a fragment of a second mask, a figurine of a deceased ancestor and two miniature table altars, as well as nine small ceramic vessels. Considered together as a ‘sacred bundle’, the stone objects collectively reference agricultural fertility, rulership and ancestor veneration, which we interpret to be a metaphorical invocation of a fundamental tenet of prehispanic Mesoamerican religious belief—the sacred covenant. The offering also played an active part in founding the community of Cerro de la Virgen, connecting its residents with the divine, the ancestors and the outside world and constituting differences in status among its members.
This paper examines the proposition that sexual and contraceptive behaviours mediate the relationship between the pregnancy desires of young, unmarried women and their having an unplanned pregnancy. The sample consisted of 854 18- to 19-year-old women living in Michigan, USA. First, the positive and negative pregnancy desires of these women were measured, as were the women’s perceptions of the positive and negative desires of their sexual partners. Then the extent to which these four types of desires, as well as several types of interactions between them, prospectively predicted the occurrence of subsequent pregnancies were tested with logistic regression analyses, initially alone and then after the addition of several types of sexual and contraceptive mediator variables. The results demonstrated that four of the ten significant motivational predictors became non-significant following the introduction of the contraceptive mediator variables and that the predictive strength of the other six significant motivational predictors was substantially reduced by their introduction. A number of factors that may account for only a partial mediational effect in some models are discussed.
A numerical investigation of generic open-wheel racing car wing and wheel geometry has been conducted, using original sub-scale experimental data for validation. It was determined that there are three main interactions that may occur, identifiable by the path that the main and secondary wing vortices take around the wheel. Interaction ‘A’ occurs when the main and secondary wing vortices both travel outboard of the wheel; interaction ‘B’ is obtained when only the main wing vortex passes inboard of the wheel; while interaction ‘C’ sees both wing vortices travel inboard of the wheel. The different interactions are achieved when geometric changes to the wing affect the pressure distribution about the endplate, either by altering the magnitude of suction generated by the wing or by changing the locations of peak suction and vortices relative to the wheel’s stagnation regions. As a result, the influence that the wing and wheel have on each other – in comparison to the same bodies in isolation – varies, resulting in significant consequences for downforce and drag.
