To improve conversion efficiency of silicon nanowire (SiNW) solar cells, it is very important to reduce the surface recombination rate on the surface of SiNWs, since SiNWs have a large surface area. We tried to cover SiNWs with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and titanium oxide (TiO2) by atomic layer deposition (ALD), since Al2O3 grown by ALD provides an excellent level of surface passivation on silicon wafers and TiO2 has a higher refractive index than Al2O3, leading to the reduction of surface reflectance. The effective minority carrier lifetime in SiNW arrays embedded in a TiO2/Al2O3 stack layer of 94 μsec was obtained, which was comparable to an Al2O3 single layer. The surface reflectance of SiNW solar cells was drastically decreased below around 5% in all of the wavelength range using the Al2O3/TiO2/Al2O3 stack layer. Heterojunction SiNW solar cells with the structure of ITO/p-type hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H)/n-type SiNWs embedded in Al2O3 and TiO2 stack layer for passivation/n-type a-Si:H/back electrode was fabricated, and a typical rectifying property and open-circuit voltage of 356 mV were successfully obtained.

To control an input energy for a load, an impedance control with a gap distance of an electron beam diode was studied using an intense pulsed-power generator. The output current of the pulsed-power generator as a function of the gap distance of electron beam diode was measured. It indicated that the behaviors of the experimentally obtained peak current and the theoretically obtained space-charge limited current were found to decrease with an increase in the gap distance. The input energy for the load was estimated from the output current, which decreased with an increase in the gap distance. It also revealed the space-charge limited current suppresses the input energy for the load with a decade.

The carbon-14 generated in Zircaloy (Zry) hull waste is considered an important radionuclide in the TRU waste geological disposal concept in Japan. Given that the metal Zry is highly corrosion-resistant in the anaerobic and low-temperature conditions of the repository, and that the C-14 release rate is assumed to be controlled by the corrosion rate, a variety of corrosion and leaching tests have been performed. However, since the Zry corrosion rate is extremely slow, it is not possible to predict long-term corrosion behavior through low-temperature corrosion tests conducted in a reasonable time period. A vast amount of testing has been conducted in the higher-temperature range of 523 to 633 K, and corrosion correlations have been obtained from these tests. Corrosion correlations have been used to predict the corrosion rate of Zry in a tuff repository. Long-term Zry autoclave corrosion data have been analyzed to develop new corrosion correlations. Extrapolating these correlations to a lower temperature range requires verification that the mechanisms do not change over the range of testing and extrapolation. Factors that influence corrosion rates under geological disposal conditions, such as material and environmental factors, should also be examined. Corrosion correlations, factors influencing corrosion rates, the results of corrosion and leaching tests, and a preliminary evaluation are discussed.

In order to analyze the C-14 inventory and leaching rate for safety evaluation of transuranic waste disposal, it is necessary to establish an analytical method that can measure C-14 with sufficient precision [1]. Oxidative decomposition of organic compounds containing C-14 is carried out to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) in an alkaline solution, which is mixed with a liquid scintillation cocktail, and the amount C-14 is quantified by measuring a beta ray spectrum with a liquid scintillation counter. It has been difficult to completely decompose carbon compounds in a sample, even to CO2, by using conventional oxidizing agents. In the work described here, we improved the method of oxidative decomposition used to completely decompose carbon compounds using peroxydisulfuric acid (K2S2O8). When C-14 in the form of CO2 was absorbed in a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) aqueous solution, only 80% of the actually used quantity was detected. Total organic carbon measurements showed that the entire quantity of CO2 was absorbed by NaOH. When NaOH aqueous solution was used, it was found that only the analytical value was 80%. The entire quantity of the actually used carbon could be measured by absorbing the CO2 in Carbo-Sorb®. An anion form and a neutral molecule exist in the organic compound released from activated metals. In order to identify organic compounds efficiently, fractionation into an anion and a neutral molecule and separation by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are necessary. Here, we propose the combined use of an ion exchange resin and HPLC as an improved technique for identification of the chemical species.

C-14 contained in Hull waste is one of the most important radionuclides in the safety assessment of transuranic (TRU) waste disposal. For more realistic safety assessment, it is important to clarify the release mechanism and chemical species of C-14 from Hull waste. In this research, leaching tests were conducted using an irradiated Zry cladding tube from a boiling-water reactor (BWR) to obtain leaching data and to investigate the relationship between Zry metal corrosion and C-14 release behavior. Both organic and inorganic C-14 compounds existed in the the liquid phase, and some C-14 moved to the gaseous phase. The release rate of C-14 obtained from the BWR cladding tube after two-year leaching tests was lower than the release rate from a pressurize water reactor (PWR) cladding tube. It is considered that the BWR cladding tube used in this test did not easily corrode since it used a comparatively new material. The release rate of C-14 was slightly lower as compared with the corrosion rate of unirradiated Zry. This is thought to be the result of improved corrosion resistance conferred by neutron irradiation, which encouraged the dissolution of grain boundary precipitation elements, such as Fe, Cr, and Ni, into the crystal grains. The leaching tests will be continued for 10 years.

An iodine-immobilizing cement solidification process using calcium aluminate cement with gypsum additive was developed. Powdered cement solid was repeatedly immersed in ion-exchanged water with varying liquid-to-solid ratios (L/S) in accelerated dissolution tests simulating interaction with groundwater at waste disposal sites. The measured concentrations of iodine in the water were on the order of 10−5 to 10−3 mol⋅dm−3 in the entire L/S range. These concentration levels are extremely low compared with those in the case of ordinary Portland cement. Calculations with a solution equilibrium model for the cement immersed in ion-exchanged water showed that the observed iodine release profile versus integrated L/S ratio from the immersion test was explained by a dissolution model of minerals in the cement.

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of intervention (specifically, intervention by telephone and mails, known as ‘tele-care’) relative to self-help as a weight-loss method. The question of whether there is a correlation between changes in two preference parameters – time discounting (i.e. impatience) and risk aversion – and the level of commitment was examined. The study, spanning a period of 24 weeks in 2006–2007, comprised 118 participants, each of whom was randomly assigned to either the tele-care or the self-help group. A public-health nurse provided support through telephone and mail communications to the tele-care group, aiming to reduce their calorie intake and increase exercise via this intervention. There was a significant decrease in the body weight of the participants of the tele-care group from the baseline; however, there were no significant differences in the weight loss, median time discounting or risk aversion between the two groups. The subsequent analysis for weight loss with changes in time and risk parameters revealed a significant difference in the weight loss in the time-discounting–loss and risk-aversion–gain groups. From the results of the multiple regression analysis, the time discounting was noted to be associated with age, initial BMI and marital status among men, and risk aversion was associated with age and job status among women. There is a possibility that a decrease in time discounting and increase in risk aversion might correlate with the weight loss or effectiveness of commitment in this trial. This study suggests that time discounting and risk aversion may be useful in anti-obesity efforts, since they are accurate criteria of behavioural patterns associated with weight problems.

We developed a variable-temperature scanning microwave microscope (VT-SμM) that can perform high-throughput materials characterization in the temperature range between 4K and room temperature. As a sensor probe we used a high-Q coaxial cavity resonator, which was mounted on the low-temperature stage to allow variable-temperature measurements. We carried out systematic studies on the thermal degradation of the conducting polymers using the combinatorial libraries of polyaniline and polythiophene thin films, which showed rapid decrease of conductivity above 300C and 250C, respectively. The low-temperature performance of the VT-SμM was demonstrated by the measurement of composition-spread Nd1-xSrxMnO3 thin film, for which we succeeded in detecting the clear metal-insulator transition at 100K. We also propose a simple and easy method for the quantitative analysis of conductive thin films, by using the standard composition-spread thin films of Ti1-xNbxO2.

We explored a new fluid flux stabilized even in the vacuum condition at high temperature by combinatorial pulsed laser deposition (PLD) approach. A small amount of CuO doped in BiOx was found to effectively stabilize BiOx even in 6 Torr O2 at 800°C. The application of this novel Bi-Cu-O flux to the vacuum process lead to the successful fabrication of a single crystal Bi4Ti3O12 film and the establishment of a more reliable process for preparation of an atomically flat LaAlO3(001) substrate.

The chemical forms of carbon leaching from carbon-containing Zr and Fe-based metallic materials have been investigated to improve the estimation of the contribution of C-14 in the performance assessment of TRU waste disposal. Both organic and inorganic carbons were identified in the leached solution with carbon containing zirconium and steel, and the concentrations of total carbon (organic plus inorganic) in the leached solutions increased with time. The carbon concentrations in the leached solution for both metallic samples were higher at higher pH. With High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), organic carbons were identified to be low-molecular weight alcohols, carboxylic acids and aldehydes.

To explore the chemical state of carbon in the matrix materials, the leaching experiments were carried out also for ZrC, Fe3C, the powder mixtures of carbon and zirconium, and of carbon and iron. The low-molecular weight organic carbons were detected only in the case of carbides (ZrC and Fe3C). The chemical forms of carbon in the zirconium alloy were suggested to be carbide or carbon by H.D. Smith[1]. The present result suggests that the chemical forms of carbon in zirconium or iron are mainly in the form of carbide.

In the interest of performance assessment, the distribution coefficients of the organic carbon species identified in the leached solution for cement were obtained. As expected, some of them were shown to be larger than the values assumed in the performance assessment of Progress Report on Disposal Concept for TRU Waste in Japan[2].
