Experiments and numerical simulations of inertial particles in underexpanded jets are performed. The structure of the jet is controlled by varying the nozzle pressure ratio, while the influence of particles on emerging shocks and rarefaction patterns is controlled by varying the particle size and mass loading. Ultra-high-speed schlieren and Lagrangian particle tracking are used to experimentally determine the two-phase flow quantities. Three-dimensional simulations are performed using a high-order, low-dissipative discretization of the gas phase while particles are tracked individually in a Lagrangian manner. A simple two-way coupling strategy is proposed to handle interphase exchange in the vicinity of shocks. Velocity statistics of each phase are reported for a wide range of pressure ratios, particle sizes and volume fractions. An upstream shift of the Mach disk in the presence of particles reveals significant two-way coupling even at low mass loading. A semi-analytic model that predicts the extent of the Mach disk shift is presented based on a one-dimensional Fanno flow that takes into account volume displacement by particles and interphase exchange due to drag and heat transfer. The per cent shift in Mach disk is found to scale with the mass loading, nozzle pressure ratio and interphase slip velocity and inversely with the particle diameter.

Escherichia albertii is an emerging foodborne enteropathogen associated with infectious diarrhoea in humans. In February 2023, an outbreak of acute gastroenteric cases was reported in a junior high school located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China. Twenty-two investigated patients presented diarrhoea (22/22, 100%), abdominal pain (21/22, 95.5%), nausea (6/22, 27.3%), and vomiting (3/22, 13.6%). E. albertii strains were successfully isolated from anal swabs collected from six patients. Each isolate was classified as sequence type ST2686, harboured eae-β gene, and carried both cdtB-I and cdtB-II subtypes, being serotyped as EAOg32:EAHg4 serotype. A comprehensive whole-genome phylogenetic analysis revealed that the six isolates formed a distinct cluster, separate from other strains. These isolates exhibited minimal genetic variation, differing from one another by 0 to 1 single nucleotide polymorphism, suggesting a common origin from a single clone. To the best of our knowledge, this represented the first reported outbreak of gastroenteritis attributed to E. albertii outside of Japan on a global scale.

The familiar process of bubbles generated via breaking waves in the ocean is foundational to many natural and industrial applications. In this process, large pockets of entrained gas are successively fragmented by the ambient turbulence into smaller and smaller bubbles. The key question is how long it takes for the bubbles to reach terminal sizes for a given system. Despite decades of effort, the reported breakup time from multiple experiments differs significantly. Here, to reconcile those results, rather than focusing on one scale, we measure multiple time scales associated with the process through a unique experiment that resolves bubbles’ local deformation and curvature. The results emphasize that the scale separation among various time scales is controlled by the Weber number, similar to how the Reynolds number determines the scale separation in single-phase turbulence, but shows a distinct transition at a critical Weber number.

In sandstorms and thunderclouds, turbulence-induced collisions between solid particles and ice crystals lead to inevitable triboelectrification. The charge segregation is usually size dependent, with small particles charged negatively and large particles charged positively. In this work, we perform numerical simulations to study the influence of charge segregation on the dynamics of bidispersed inertial particles in turbulence. Direct numerical simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence are performed with the Taylor Reynolds number ${Re}_{\lambda }=147.5$, while particles are subjected to both electrostatic interactions and fluid drag, with Stokes numbers of 1 and 10 for small and large particles, respectively. Coulomb repulsion/attraction is shown to effectively inhibit/enhance particle clustering within a short range. Besides, the mean relative velocity between same-size particles is found to rise as the particle charge increases because of the exclusion of low-velocity pairs, while the relative velocity between different-size particles is almost unaffected, emphasizing the dominant roles of differential inertia. The mean Coulomb-turbulence parameter, ${Ct}_0$, is then defined to characterize the competition between the Coulomb potential energy and the mean relative kinetic energy. In addition, a model is proposed to quantify the rate at which charged particles approach each other and to capture the transition of the particle relative motion from the turbulence-dominated regime to the electrostatic-dominated regime. Finally, the probability distribution function of the approach rate between particle pairs is examined, and its dependence on the Coulomb force is further discussed using the extended Coulomb-turbulence parameter.

We conduct direct numerical simulations and study the evolution of a pair of counter-rotating vortices in a stratified and turbulent environment beyond the first vortex linking (which is due to the Crow instability). The initial position of the two vortices is perpendicular to the direction of thermal stratification. We vary the Froude number, the background turbulence intensity and the Reynolds number, covering strong, weak and neutral stratification; low, moderate and high background turbulence; and low and moderate Reynolds numbers. We observe a second vortex linking in a weakly stratified environment for the first time. The second vortex linking is followed by turbulence bursts that lead to the rapid decay of the residual vortices after the first vortex linking, leading to a short-living vortex pair. This challenges the conventional view that residual vortices have a long life span, which is true only in an unstratified environment. In addition to the second vortex linking, we observe the following. First, strong background turbulence quickly breaks the two vortices. Second, the two vortices induce secondary and tertiary vortices and lose energy to gravitational waves in a strongly stratified ($Fr\leqslant 0.7$) environment.

A phenomenological model is proposed to describe the deformation and orientation dynamics of finite-sized bubbles in both quiescent and turbulent aqueous media. This model extends and generalizes a previous work that is limited to only the viscous deformation of neutrally buoyant droplets, conducted by Maffettone & Minale (J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech., vol. 78, 1998, pp. 227–241), into a high Reynolds number regime where the bubble deformation is dominated by flow inertia. By deliberately dividing flow inertia into contributions from the slip velocity and velocity gradients, a new formulation for bubble deformation is constructed and validated against two experiments designed to capture the deformation and orientation dynamics of bubbles simultaneously with two types of surrounding flows. The relative importance of each deformation mechanism is measured by its respective dimensionless coefficient, which can be isolated and evaluated independently through several experimental constraints without multi-variable fitting, and the results agree with the model predictions well. The acquired coefficients imply that bubbles reorient through body rotation as they rise in water at rest but through deformation along a different direction in turbulence. Finally, we provide suggestions on how to implement the proposed framework for characterizing the dynamics of deformable bubbles/drops in simulations.

We present simultaneous three-dimensional measurements of deformable finite-sized bubbles and surrounding turbulent flows. The orientations of bubbles are linked to two key mechanisms that drive bubble deformation: the turbulent strain rate and slip velocity between the two phases. The strongest preferential alignment is between the bubbles and slip velocity, indicating the latter plays a dominant role. We also compared our experimental results with the deformation of ideal material elements with no slip velocity or surface tension. Without these, material elements show highly different orientations, further confirming the importance of the slip velocity in the bubble orientation. In addition to deformation, when bubbles begin to break, their relative orientations change significantly. Although the alignment of the severely deformed bubbles with the eigenvectors of the turbulent strain rate becomes much stronger, the bubble semi-major axis becomes aligned with (rather than perpendicular to) the slip velocity through an almost $90^{\circ }$ turn. This puzzling orientation change occurs because the slip velocity contains the contributions from both the bubble and the background flow. As the bubble experiences strong deformation, the rapid elongation of its semi-major axis leads to a large bubble velocity, which dominates the slip velocity and forces its alignment with the bubble's semi-major axis. The slip velocity thereby switches from a driving mechanism to a driven result as bubbles approach breakup. The results highlight the complex coupling between the bubble orientation and the surrounding flow, which should be included when modelling the bubble deformation and breakup in turbulence.

This article contends that prior research on the behaviour of Chinese local cadres pays limited attention to their motivation for avoiding blame. Using qualitative data from three field studies conducted in Guangdong province, the study focuses on blame avoidance in the cadre responsibility system, which is recognized as an important instrument for state capacity building. Our analysis uncovers three major discursive strategies used by grassroots cadres to manage blame either before or after it is apportioned: de-legitimating performance standards, re-attributing blame and transferring blame risk. We find that local cadres have a role as blame makers in shifting blame and accusations. This finding challenges the conventional view, which typically sees local officials as blame takers. The article concludes by elaborating on the wider implications of this finding and proposing avenues for future research.

We present an experimental investigation of the acceleration statistics and the added mass tensor of deformable gas bubbles in turbulence. By simultaneously tracking both bubbles and their surrounding flow in three dimensions, we find two independent ways of estimating the bubble acceleration: either directly measured from three-dimensional bubble trajectories or indirectly calculated from the bubble's equation of motion. When such an equation is projected onto the bubble frame, the added-mass coefficient becomes a diagonal tensor with three elements being linked to the standard deviation of bubble acceleration along three bubble principal axes. This constraint aids in experimentally determining the added mass coefficient tensor. The obtained trend of $C_A$ seems to agree with Lamb's potential flow solutions for spheroids, suggesting that the added-mass force on deformable bubbles can be modelled using spheroids with the same geometry and orientation. In addition, the probability density function of the relative orientation between the semi-major axis of deformed bubbles and the slip acceleration in turbulence is shown. A surprising finding is that the bubble orientation, indicated by the bubble's major axis, is not random in turbulence but rather is preferentially aligned with the slip acceleration. The degree of this alignment increases as bubbles deform more. Because accelerating along the major axis of a more deformed bubble entails reduced added mass, the acceleration standard deviation of deformable bubbles increases as a function of the bubble aspect ratio.

We experimentally investigate the breakup mechanisms and probability of Hinze-scale bubbles in turbulence. The Hinze scale is defined as the critical bubble size based on the critical mean Weber number, across which the bubble breakup probability was believed to have an abrupt transition from being dominated by turbulence stresses to being suppressed completely by the surface tension. In this work, to quantify the breakup probability of bubbles with sizes close to the Hinze scale and to examine different breakup mechanisms, both bubbles and their surrounding tracer particles were simultaneously tracked. From the experimental results, two Weber numbers, one calculated from the slip velocity between the two phases and the other acquired from local velocity gradients, are separated and fitted with models that can be linked back to turbulence characteristics. Moreover, we also provide an empirical model to link bubble deformation to the two Weber numbers by extending the relationship obtained from potential flow theory. The proposed relationship between bubble aspect ratio and the Weber numbers seems to work consistently well for a range of bubble sizes. Furthermore, the time traces of bubble aspect ratio and the two Weber numbers are connected using the linear forced oscillator model. Finally, having access to the distributions of these two Weber numbers provides a unique way to extract the breakup probability of bubbles with sizes close to the Hinze scale.

We experimentally investigate the rise velocity of finite-sized bubbles in turbulence with a high energy dissipation rate of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}\gtrsim 0.5~\text{m}^{2}~\text{s}^{-3}$. In contrast to a 30–40 % reduction in rise velocity previously reported in weak turbulence (the Weber number ($We$) is much smaller than the Eötvös number ($Eo$); $We\ll 1<Eo$), the bubble rise velocity in intense turbulence shows a surprising new behaviour: an abrupt transition from an order of magnitude slower to a factor of two faster than rising in an otherwise quiescent medium. This transition occurs when $We$ increases from below one to above one, underscoring the key role played by the turbulence-induced deformation. We also formulate a model based on bubble–eddy coupling, and the results show an excellent agreement with not only our data in intense turbulence but also other works on weak turbulence. The model also helps us to extract the lift and drag coefficients of bubbles in intense turbulence for a wide range of $We$ and Reynolds numbers in situ.

Flow physics plays a key role in nearly every facet of the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes the generation and aerosolization of virus-laden respiratory droplets from a host, its airborne dispersion and deposition on surfaces, as well as the subsequent inhalation of these bioaerosols by unsuspecting recipients. Fluid dynamics is also key to preventative measures such as the use of face masks, hand washing, ventilation of indoor environments and even social distancing. This article summarizes what we know and, more importantly, what we need to learn about the science underlying these issues so that we are better prepared to tackle the next outbreak of COVID-19 or a similar disease.

Motivated by subsurface carbon sequestration, an experimental investigation of dissolution-driven Rayleigh–Darcy convection using two miscible fluids in a Hele-Shaw cell is conducted. A thin horizontal layer of circular impermeable discs is inserted to create an environment with heterogeneous and anisotropic permeability. The Sherwood number that measures the convective mass transfer rate between two fluids at the interface is linked to different parameters of the disc layer, including the disc size, spacing, layer permeability and its relative height with respect to the fluid interface. It is surprising that the convective mass transfer rate in our configuration is dominated by the disc spacing, but almost independent of either the disc size or the mean permeability of the layer. To explain this dependence, the convective mass transfer rate is decomposed into the number, velocity and density contrast of fingers travelling through the disc layer. Both the number and density contrast of fingers show dependences on the disc layer permeability, even though the product of them, the mass transfer rate, does not. In addition, the density contrast also shows a non-monotonic dependence on the disc spacing. The transition point is at a spacing that is close to the finger width. Based on this observation, a simple model based on mixing and scale competition is proposed, and it shows an excellent agreement with the experimental results.

Northeastern China is a region of high tick abundance, multiple tick-borne pathogens and likely human infections. The spectrum of diseases caused by tick-borne pathogens has not been objectively evaluated in this region for clinical management and for comparison with other regions globally where tick-transmitted diseases are common. Based on clinical symptoms, PCR, indirect immunofluorescent assay and (or) blood smear, we identified and described tick-borne diseases from patients with recent tick bite seen at Mudanjiang Forestry Central Hospital. From May 2010 to September 2011, 42% (75/180) of patients were diagnosed with a specific tick-borne disease, including Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, human babesiosis and spotted fever group rickettsiosis. When we compared clinical and laboratory features to identify factors that might discriminate tick-transmitted infections from those lacking that evidence, we revealed that erythema migrans and neurological manifestations were statistically significantly differently presented between those with and without documented aetiologies (P < 0.001, P = 0.003). Twelve patients (6.7%, 12/180) were co-infected with two tick-borne pathogens. We demonstrated the poor ability of clinicians to identify the specific tick-borne disease. In addition, it is necessary to develop specific laboratory assays for optimal diagnosis of tick-borne diseases.

Numerous studies have been conducted on the cellular morphology of Cryptocaryon irritans. However, details regarding the tomont stage of its life cycle remain lacking. In this study, we investigated the morphology of the tomont stage throughout encystment and cell division using light and electron microscopy. Results showed that there was no secretion of encystation-specific secretory vesicles or extrusomes during formation of the cyst wall. Instead, the synthesis and construction of the C. irritans cyst wall materials may involve molecular events at the pellicle. The somatic cilia and the cytostome were present during encystment and covered by the newly formed cyst wall. New somatic cilia were continuously created between old cilia and showed various lengths during cell division, a process that was similar to morphogenesis in many free-living ciliates. During cell division inside the tomont, dividing daughter cells formed temporary cell chains with no oral primordia before separating from each other into dissociative tomite precursors. The process of cell division may not be accompanied by stomatogenesis, and new oral primordia in offspring cells likely formed before the dividing cell chains split into dissociative spherical tomites. Mitochondrial autophagy was observed in encysting C. irritans cells. Numerous endosymbionts and Golgi structures were observed in the tomont cytoplasm. Cellular metabolic activity in the C. irritans tomont was quite high, with large amounts of materials or cellular organelles potentially being synthesized and prepared for the following infective theront stage.

Cells of Cryptocaryon irritans at different life history stages were studied using both light and electron microscopy. The characteristics of several organelles were revealed for the first time at the ultrastructural level. It was confirmed that the cytostome of trophonts, protomonts and theronts was surrounded by cilium–palp triplets rather than ciliary triplets. The nematodesmata underlying the circumoral dikinetids were single bundles, whereas these were always paired in Prorodontids. Toxicysts were present in late-stage tomonts and theronts, but were absent in trophonts and protomonts. We posited that toxicysts might play a role in infection and invasion of host-fish tissue by theronts. The adoral brosse was unlike that of any other family of the class Prostomatea based on its location and morphology. Membranous folds were present in trophonts, protomonts and theronts. These folds were longer and more highly developed in C. irritans than in exclusively free-living prostome ciliates suggesting that they might be linked to parasitism in C. irritans. Trophonts, protomonts and theronts had multiple contractile vacuoles. The basic ultrastructure of the contractile vacuole of C. irritans was similar to that of other kinetofragminophoran ciliates. They might play different roles in different stages of the life cycle since their ultrastructure varied among trophonts, protomonts and theronts.

We apply a recently developed filtering approach, i.e. filter-space technique (FST), to study the scale-to-scale transport of kinetic energy, thermal energy, and enstrophy in two-dimensional (2D) Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) turbulence. Although the scaling laws of the energy cascades in 2D RT systems follow the Bolgiano–Obukhov (BO59) scenario due to buoyancy forces, the kinetic energy is still found to be, on average, dynamically transferred to large scales by an inverse cascade, while both the mean thermal energy and the mean enstrophy move towards small scales by forward cascades. In particular, there is a reasonably extended range over which the transfer rate of thermal energy is scale-independent and equals the corresponding thermal dissipation rate at different times. This range functions similarly to the inertial range for the kinetic energy in the homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. Our results further show that at small scales the fluctuations of the three instantaneous local fluxes are highly asymmetrically distributed and there is a strong correlation between any two fluxes. These small-scale features are signatures of the mixing and dissipation of fluids with steep temperature gradients at the fluid interfaces.

We present experimental evidence that a minute amount of polymer additives can significantly enhance heat transport in the bulk region of turbulent thermal convection. The effects of polymer additives are found to be the enhancement of coherent heat fluxes and suppression of incoherent heat fluxes. The enhanced heat transport is associated with the increased coherency of thermal plumes, as a result of the suppression of small-scale turbulent fluctuations by polymers. The incoherent heat flux, arising from turbulent background fluctuations, makes no net contribution to heat transport. The fact that polymer additives can increase the coherency of thermal plumes is supported by the measurements of a number of local quantities, such as the extracted plume amplitude and width, the velocity autocorrelation functions and the velocity–temperature cross-correlation coefficient. The results from local measurements also suggest the existence of a threshold value for the polymer concentration, only above which significant modification of the plume coherent properties and enhancement of the local heat flux can be observed. Estimation of the plume emission rate suggests a stabilization of the thermal boundary layer by polymer additives.

We report an experimental study of the large-scale circulation (LSC) reversal in quasi-2D turbulent thermal convection, in which the aspect ratio ${\it\Gamma}$ ($=\text{height}/\text{length}$ of a rectangular box) is used as a parameter to perturb the stability of the LSC. It is found that the mean time interval $\langle {\it\tau}\rangle$ between two successive reversals increases strongly with increasing ${\it\Gamma}$. A stochastic model is proposed to incorporate the effect of the corner rolls. In the model, the aspect ratio serves as a tuning parameter for the relative weight of the corner rolls that damp the LSC. The model predictions for the shape of the bistable states of the system and $\langle {\it\tau}\rangle$ agree excellently with the experimental results, with $\langle {\it\tau}\rangle$ having an unexpected stretched exponential Rayleigh number dependence, ${\sim}\!\exp (Ra^{{\it\alpha}})$. We further show quantitatively that the main damping force of the LSC in a quasi-2D system is from the corner rolls rather than the viscous drag from the sidewalls, which bridges the difference found in quasi-2D and 3D systems.
