Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) and purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria L.) are invasive weeds that displace native vegetation. Herbicides are often applied to these weeds during flowering, so it would be ideal to identify them early in the season, possibly by the leaves. This paper evaluates the spectral separability of the inflorescences and leaves of these plants from surrounding vegetation. Leafy spurge, purple loosestrife, and surrounding vegetation were collected from sites in southeastern North Dakota and subjected to spectral analysis. Partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to separate the spectral signatures of these weeds in the visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Using PLS-DA, the weeds were discriminated from their surroundings with R2 values of 0.86 to 0.92. Analysis of the data indicated that the bands contributing the most to each model were in the red and red-edge spectral regions. Identifying these weeds by the leaves allows them to be mapped earlier in the season, providing more time for herbicide application planning. The spectral signatures identified in this proof of concept study are the first step before using ultra–high resolution aerial imagery to classify and identify leafy spurge and purple loosestrife.

Native forbs are an essential component in the functioning and diversity of prairie communities. Aminocyclopyrachlor (AMCP) will effectively control many noxious weeds that invade prairie communities; however, its efficacy on desirable broadleaf plants is relatively unknown. Few field studies have been reported, and locating adequate populations of native forbs for evaluation of tolerance to herbicides is difficult. The susceptibility of 10 prairie forb species to AMCP was evaluated in the greenhouse. Species were chosen to correlate with a field study of AMCP and a previous greenhouse experiment. AMCP was applied at 0, 35, 70, and 105 g ha−1 with a methylated seed oil (MSO) plus silicone-based non-ionic surfactant (NIS) blend at 0.25% v/v when plants reached the growth stage simulating a spring treatment for weed control. Blueflag iris (Iris versicolor L.) and harebell (Campanula rotundifolia L.) were relatively tolerant and would likely be unharmed following an application of AMCP in the field. Wild licorice (Glycyrrhiza lepidota Pursh), prairie wild rose (Rosa arkansana Porter), purple prairie clover (Dalea purpurea Vent.), and wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa L.) were moderately susceptible to AMCP; however, plants might regrow in the field, since some survived at the highest AMCP application rate (105 g ha−1) evaluated. Skyblue aster [Symphyotrichum oolentangiense (Riddell) G. L. Nesom], Canada goldenrod (Solidago canadensis L.), blue cardinal-flower (Lobelia siphilitica L.), and blacksamson echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia DC.) were susceptible to AMCP even when applied at 35 g ha−1. The susceptibility of greenhouse-grown forbs to AMCP was the same or similar to species evaluated in the field and can be used to predict native forb tolerance in the field.

Canada thistle can cause greater than 50% yield loss in small grain crops, but little is known about production losses when the weed invades pasture and wildlands. Change in grass, forb, and woody species production from Canada thistle infestations was evaluated in two separate studies in North Dakota. The first measured change in production following aminopyralid applied at 120 g ha−1 to control Canada thistle at two prairie sites. In general, grass, broadleaf, woody, and total plant yields were similar between treated and untreated prairie, regardless of the near-complete control of Canada thistle following aminopyralid application. Grass yield increased by 365 kg ha−1 the year after treatment at one location, with no change in forb or woody species production. Plant production was also estimated at 20 ungrazed wildland preserves located within two Major Land Resource Areas (MLRAs). Similar to the prairie sites, minimal differences in production between Canada thistle–infested and noninfested sites were observed. The only exception was an increase in grass production of 425 kg ha−1 at one of the MLRAs, with no change in broadleaf or woody species production between the Canada thistle–infested and noninfested sites. In contrast to cropland, pasture and wildland production of other species was not consistently reduced by Canada thistle.

Aphthona spp. flea beetles were released in two ecological sites of the Little Missouri National Grasslands in southwestern North Dakota in 1999 to control leafy spurge. The change in leafy spurge density and soil seedbank composition was monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of the biological weed control agent and the associated change in plant communities 5, 10, and 15 yr after release in loamy overflow (valleys) and loamy sites (ridges). In 2014, 15 yr after release, leafy spurge stem density had decreased 94% from 110 to 7 stems m−2 in the loamy overflow sites and 88% from 78 to 9 stems m−2 in the loamy sites. Leafy spurge represented only 2% and 6% of the loamy overflow and loamy seedbanks in 2004, respectively, compared with nearly 67% and 70%, respectively, in 1999. There was a slow shift to reintroduction of native species into the seedbank over the last 15 yr. The number of desirable species increased to 21 by 2014 (more than three times the number of species in 1999) in the loamy overflow sites, and doubled to 14 species in the loamy sites, while less desirable forb species doubled in both sites. Desirable grass species doubled in the loamy overflow sites by 2014 but remained unchanged in loamy sites. Aphthona spp. successfully controlled leafy spurge for more than 15 yr without any additional control methods or costs to land managers and resulted in the slow return of a subset of native species.

Aminocyclopyrachlor (AMCP) will control many invasive broadleaf weeds, but the susceptibility of desirable forbs is not widely known. Native prairie response to AMCP was evaluated near Fargo, ND, and Felton, MN, in the Northern Great Plains. Both sites had high floristic quality prior to treatment, with 33 and 80 different species at Fargo and Felton, respectively. AMCP was applied at 140 g ha−1 in July 2014 to coincide with leafy spurge and Canada thistle treatment timing. AMCP altered the plant communities and reduced foliar cover of undesirable species, high seral forbs (undisturbed stable communities), and low seral forbs (early succession in disturbed communities) at both locations at 10 and 14 mo after treatment (MAT). AMCP reduced Canada thistle and leafy spurge in Fargo and eliminated hedge bindweed, prickly lettuce, and black medic in Felton. High seral forb foliar cover was reduced at 10 and 14 MAT from 20% to 2% and 3% in Fargo and from 19% to 1.6% and 2% in Felton, respectively. The high seral forb species birdfoot violet, white panicled aster, northern bedstraw, Canada goldenrod, purple meadowrue, and American vetch were reduced at both locations. Low seral forb cover also decreased at 10 MAT from 22% to 10% in Fargo and from 12% to 1% in Felton, respectively. By 14 MAT, low seral species in Fargo recovered to 16%, but recovery was much slower in Felton and slightly increased to 1.5%. After treatment high and low seral monocot species increased at both sites, likely due to reduced competition from susceptible species. AMCP reduced richness, evenness, and diversity at both locations at 10 and 14 MAT; therefore, floristic quality declined. A decline in diversity is generally undesirable but could have beneficial effects if invasive weeds and other undesirable species are reduced or eliminated.

Greenhouse cage studies were conducted to determine the influence of shoot morphology and genetic variation on establishment of Spurgia esulae gall midge on seven leafy spurge genotypes. The genotypes were collected from South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, Manitoba, and Austria. Genotypes from South Dakota and Nebraska were most susceptible to gall formation and had the highest larvae survival, while the genotypes from Montana and Manitoba were most resistant. Morphological characteristics of the leafy spurge stem tips, such as stem diameter, leaf length, width, and area did not correlate with gall formation or larvae survival. Chloroplast DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the genotypes identified six chloroplast types among the seven leafy spurge genotypes. The two genotypes most resistant to galling by S. esulae, Manitoba and Montana, had the same chloroplast genotype, but also were closely related to the two most susceptible genotypes. Because eggs were laid on all genotypes, it appears that adult females were not preferentially selecting appropriate host genotypes, but that egg and larvae survival was strongly influenced by genotype.

Efforts to screen and mass-rear insects and diseases for leafy spurge biocontrol agents have been hampered by low success in propagation and slow growth of leafy spurge in the greenhouse. The optimum greenhouse conditions for leafy spurge growth were determined. Leafy spurge was propagated from stem tip cuttings, with the basal end treated with 0.2% NAA, and the plants misted with water for 10 d. Optimum conditions for growth were 27 C air temperature, application of a complete fertilizer at 70 kg ha−1 weekly or 135 kg ha−1 biweekly 20 d after stem tip propagation, in a peat/perlite/vermiculite growth medium at pH 7 and a 16-h photoperiod. Regrowth from roots of parent plants was improved when cuttings were taken from plants at least 60 d old, and plants grew nearly twice as rapidly when the medium was maintained at 30 C compared to 22 C. Refrigeration of stem tip cuttings or roots before planting did not affect survival or growth vigor. Only gibberellic acid of nine plant growth regulators evaluated increased growth, but plants were etiolated. Biotypes from Nebraska and South Dakota were shorter than five others from the United States or Austria but had similar root and shoot dry weight. The time required to propagate vigorous leafy spurge was reduced to 2 mo compared to 6 mo required prior to the study.

The effect of glyphosate applied alone and with 2,4-D as a commercial mixture on 30 native or introduced grass species was evaluated. Grass yield averaged 98 and 87% of the untreated controls when glyphosate was applied in the fall at 0.2 or 0.4 kg ae ha-1, respectively, alone or with 2,4-D at 0.35 or 0.7 kg ae ha-1. Western wheatgrass production decreased more than any other species present in a native rangeland site following either a spring or fall glyphosate application. In seeded plots, intermediate wheatgrass was the most and ‘Fairway’ crested wheatgrass the least susceptible to glyphosate plus 2,4-D with average yields of 57 and 97% compared with untreated controls of each species, respectively. Glyphosate reduced the yield of ‘Nordan’ standard crested wheatgrass more than that of Fairway crested wheatgrass or other diploid cultivars. The greater the spring precipitation following a fall application of glyphosate, the less effect of glyphosate on forage yield. Glyphosate plus 2,4-D can be used for weed control in pasture and rangeland provided some yield reduction is acceptable.

The Spurgia esulae gall midge was introduced in North Dakota in 1986 as a biocontrol agent for leafy spurge. Spurgia esulae causes stem tip galls thereby decreasing seed production and it has been most successful near wooded areas. However, a second control method is needed to reduce the leafy spurge infestation and prevent spread from roots. Imazethapyr, 2,4-D, or picloram application did reduce the number of S. esulae galls but not the number of larvae per gall. Long-term S. esulae population was not affected by herbicide application. The integration of herbicides with S. esulae would prevent leaf spurge spread from a wooded area and would reduce seed production within an area where herbicides generally cannot be used.

The effect of various growth regulators on seedling field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L. # CONAR) growth and control with herbicides was evaluated. Fourteen growth regulators were applied at 0.38 to 380 g/ha 7 days before herbicide application in greenhouse, growth chamber and field studies. Field bindweed seedlings pretreated with growth regulators were more effectively controlled by herbicides compared to those not pretreated in greenhouse evaluations. Abscisic acid [[R-(Z,E)]-(+)-5-(1-hydroxy-2,6-6-trimethyl-4-oxo-2-cyclohexane-1-yl)-3-methyl-2,4-pentadicenoic acid] (ABA), ancymidol [a-cyclopropyl-a-(p-methoxyphenyl)-5-pyrimidine methanol], cycloheximide {3-[2-(3,5-dimethyl-2-oxocylohexyl)-2-hydroxyethyl]glutarimide}, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid [N,N′-1,2-ethanediyl-bis-(N-(carboxymethyl) glycine] (EDTA), and 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) increased field bindweed stem length. Ancymidol and gibberellic acid [ent-3α,10,13-trihydroxy-20-norgibberell-1,16-diene-7,19-dioc acid 19,10-lactone] (GA) increased root weight, and GA increased root length. Cycloheximide, ethephon [(2-chloroethyl)phosphonic acid] and MH (1,2-dihydro-3,6-pyridazinedione) decreased field bindweed root weight. Ancymidol, GA and IAA (indole-3-acetic acid) increased the number of shoots per plant of seedling field bindweed. Dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid) efficacy was enhanced following field bindweed preconditioning with ethephon and IAA. Ancymidol and cycloheximide applied as pretreatments increased glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] activity on seedling field bindweed. Ancymidol and IAA pretreatment improved field bindweed control with triclopyr {[(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxy] acetic acid}. Herbicide-growth regulator combination treatments that increased field bindweed control in greenhouse and growth chamber studies did not increase top growth control in the field.

Relative humidity after application, spray additives, and solution pH affected both foliar absorption and translocation of 14C-picloram to leafy spurge roots. 14C-picloram absorption increased from 11 to 34% and translocation increased from 5 to 21% as time at posttreatment humidity increased from 0 to 48 h. Absorption and translocation were not different when pre- or posttreatment temperatures were 30/18 or 18/10 C (day/night). 14C-picloram absorption and translocation to the roots were 18 and 6%, respectively, when applied alone, and increased to 46 and 12%, respectively, when applied with ammonium sulfate at 2.5 kg/ha. Absorption and translocation were unaffected by ammonium nitrate. Foliar absorption and translocation of 14C-picloram in leafy spurge were unaffected by pH of unbuffered spray solution but increased at least 50% when applied in a solution buffered at pH 4.8 with trisodium citrate. Foliar absorption in detached leafy spurge leaves increased from 26 to 51% of applied 14C as the citrate buffer concentration increased from 0.01 to 0.1 mM, respectively.

Wells and streams in 10 North Dakota counties were surveyed for picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid), the major herbicide used to control leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L. # EPHES). Three rivers and 144 wells were sampled in 1985. Picloram concentration ranged from <0.1 to 12.4 ppb in the water from five wells in five counties and from <0.1 to 6 ppb in two rivers. An additional 44 wells were sampled in 1986; they were located within 2 km of the five wells where picloram was detected in 1985. Picloram concentrations in 1986 ranged from non-detectable to 6.7 ppb in the original contaminated wells and was 0.97 ppb in water from one of the additional 44 wells. Picloram concentration in the river water was lower in 1986 than in 1985 but was detected farther downstream. All contaminated wells were within 1.5 km of an area treated for leafy spurge, but picloram had been spilled accidentally or misapplied near all but one of the wells. The concentrations detected were at least 100 times below suggested tolerance levels for water.

Quinclorac is a systemic herbicide registered to control annual grass and broadleaf weeds in rice. Field research was conducted to determine the most effective quinclorac treatment for leafy spurge control. Leafy spurge control 12 mo after treatment (MAT) averaged 38 and 77% when quinclorac was applied at 0.56 and 1.7 kg ae/ha, respectively. Quinclorac applied with the crop-oil-based adjuvant Scoil provided similar leafy spurge control compared to quinclorac applied alone. Quinclorac plus Scoil applied with picloram provided better leafy spurge control than quinclorac plus Scoil alone. The optimum date for fall treatment with quinclorac is broad. Quinclorac at 1.1 kg/ha plus Scoil at 2.3 L/ha applied on September 1, September 15, October 1, and October 15 provided similar leafy spurge control and averaged 56% 12 MAT.

The response of ‘Era’ (tolerant) and ‘Coteau’ (susceptible) hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to CGA-82725 2-propynyl ester of {2-[4- [(3,5-dichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} was determined in field and greenhouse evaluations. Era wheat was most susceptible to CGA-82725 applied at early jointing through the boot stage. Coteau wheat was most susceptible at die two-leaf stage and between early jointing through spike emergence. Coteau was injured more than Era wheat as the CGA-82725 rate was increased from 0.14 to 0.28 kg ai/ha. Wheat grain yield reductions were greatest when CGA-82725 was applied at the early jointing through boot stage for both cultivars and averaged 73% of the control. Absorption and translocation of 14C-CGA-82725 were similar and increased over time regardless of cultivar. Most of the absorbed 14C remained in the treated leaf in both cultivars.

The absorption, translocation, and metabolism of 14C-picloram and 14C-2,4-D applied alone and together to leafy spurge was evaluated. Leafy spurge absorbed 34 and 24% of the 14C-2,4-D applied alone and with picloram, respectively, and 14 and 10% of the 14C-picloram applied alone and with 2,4-D, respectively. More 14C-2,4-D was translocated in leafy spurge than 14C-picloram, and adding picloram to 14C-2,4-D decreased 14C translocation to the roots. Adding 2,4-D to 14C-picloram increased the percentage of absorbed 14C that translocated in leafy spurge from 28 to 48%. Generally, 14C-picloram and 14C-2,4-D remained as the parent acid in leafy spurge whether applied alone or together. Of 14C-picloram recovered from the roots, 83% was unmetabolized picloram when applied alone compared to 95% when applied with 2,4-D, which probably is the reason for increased leafy spurge control when these herbicides are applied together.

Leafy spurge, a long-lived perennial, grows in many habitats, from floodplains to grasslands and mountain slopes. The plant emerges in early spring and produces showy, yellow bracts that appear in late May. The true flowers emerge in mid-June. The plant spreads by both seeds and roots and contains a white sticky latex that deters grazing by many animals. Dicamba, 2,4-D, glyphosate, and picloram have commonly been used to control leafy spurge. Picloram plus 2,4-D is frequently used for leafy spurge control in North Dakota. Ten insect species for leafy spurge biocontrol have been released in North Dakota; the most successful have been the flea beetles, Aphthona nigriscutis, A. czwalinae, and A. lacertosa. The leafy spurge gall midge (Spurgia esulae) has been most successful near wooded areas. Herbicides combined with either the leafy spurge flea beetles or gall midge have controlled leafy spurge better than either method used alone. Grazing with sheep or goats is a cost-effective method for controlling leafy spurge top growth in large infestations. Grazing combined with fall-applied picloram plus 2,4-D reduced leafy spurge density more rapidly and maintained control longer than either method used alone. Several grass species are competitive with leafy spurge including ‘Rebound’ smooth brome, ‘Rodan’ western wheatgrass, ‘Pryor’ slender wheatgrass, and ‘Manska’ pubescent wheatgrass. Cultivating twice each fall after harvest for 3 yr in cropland completely controlled leafy spurge. A successful long-term management program should be designed for specific situations and should include combinations of herbicides, insects, grazing, and/or seeding competitive species.

Roller-applied picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid) at a concentration of 30 to 60 g ae/L gave similar control to leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L. ♯ EPHES) as spray-applied picloram at 1.1 to 2.2 kg ae/ha. Leafy spurge control was most effective when the roller applicator was adjusted to treat a maximum amount of stem tissue with a 60 g/L picloram solution. Control was not improved by including a petroleum oil or surfactant additive. Fall applications of roller-applied picloram tended to provide better control than spring applications. When used on dense leafy spurge stands, the roller applicator applied only 40% as much picloram as spray treatments of 2.2 kg/ha. However, picloram residues in soil following roller application were similar to those from picloram at 0.3 to 1.1 kg/ha applied as a spray.

Temperature changes prior to picloram application affects its activity in leafy spurge. Absorption of 14C picloram was directly correlated with temperature changes; each 1 C increase in air temperature 24 h before treatment resulted in a 1% increase of 14C-picloram absorption in leafy spurge and vice versa. The greatest 14C-picloram absorption averaged 47% of applied 14C when the temperature increased from 18 C to 24 or 30 C 24 h before treatment compared to 33% when temperatures were constant. Translocation of 14C picloram was more sensitive than absorption to temperature changes with 4.3 and 1% of applied 14C-picloram translocated to the roots when the plants were maintained at 12 and 30 C, respectively. Even though absorption increased directly with temperature, 14C-picloram translocation to the root system declined as temperature increased.
