Effective stakeholder interviewing is a critical component of a design process. However, interviewing is a complex skill that is difficult for novice designers to learn and incorporate into their design practices. Few studies have investigated how novice designers apply recommended practices for interviewing stakeholders during the development of product requirements. In this research, we studied how novice designers elicited information to inform the development of product requirements during stakeholder interviews. Results included the establishment of a coding methodology developed from a systematic literature review of recommended interviewing practices that was used to reliably evaluate the use of recommended practices in novice designers’ interviews. A correlation existed between the use of recommended practices and the extent to which information gathered from interviews was incorporated into the requirements. Additionally, specific recommended practices, such as encouraging deep thinking and being flexible and opportunistic, differentiated performance among novice designers. The coding methodology could be adapted to guide the development of stakeholder interview protocols and assessment of design interview skills.

Evidence indicates that Antarctic minke whales (AMWs) in the Ross Sea affect the foraging behaviour, especially diet, of sympatric Adélie penguins (ADPEs) by, we hypothesize, influencing the availability of prey they have in common, mainly crystal krill. To further investigate this interaction, we undertook a study in McMurdo Sound during 2012–2013 and 2014–2015 using telemetry and biologging of whales and penguins, shore-based observations and quantification of the preyscape. The 3D distribution and density of prey were assessed using a remotely operated vehicle deployed along and to the interior of the fast-ice edge where AMWs and ADPEs focused their foraging. Acoustic surveys of prey and foraging behaviour of predators indicate that prey remained abundant under the fast ice, becoming successively available to air-breathing predators only as the fast ice retreated. Over both seasons, the ADPE diet included less krill and more Antarctic silverfish once AMWs became abundant, but the penguins' foraging behaviour (i.e. time spent foraging, dive depth, distance from colony) did not change. In addition, over time, krill abundance decreased in the upper water column near the ice edge, consistent with the hypothesis (and previously gathered information) that AMW and ADPE foraging contributed to an alteration of prey availability.

Reflection is an important component in design skill development that helps designers better understand their design problem, develop better solutions, and improve their design approaches. This study explored the information that a student design team reflected on as part of a needs finding experience and the outcomes from these reflections. During the needs finding experience, the team exhibited reflection-in- action behavior as they used available data to form and iterate on explanatory hypotheses about potential community needs. After the needs finding experience, the team exhibited reflection-on-action behavior as they drew connections between their interview approaches and stakeholder responses and discussed changes they might make in the future. The team also identified situations where contextual factors of the stakeholder impacted their interviews, but during these reflections did not indicate how they might adapt their approaches to account for such factors in the future. These findings show that student designers can use reflection as a tool to improve their needs finding process but would benefit from pedagogical structures that might help them reflect more effectively.

Returning genomic research results to family members raises complex questions. Genomic research on life-limiting conditions such as cancer, and research involving storage and reanalysis of data and specimens long into the future, makes these questions pressing. This author group, funded by an NIH grant, published consensus recommendations presenting a framework. This follow-up paper offers concrete guidance and tools for implementation. The group collected and analyzed relevant documents and guidance, including tools from the Clinical Sequencing Exploratory Research (CSER) Consortium. The authors then negotiated a consensus toolkit of processes and documents. That toolkit offers sample consent and notification documents plus decision flow-charts to address return of results to family of living and deceased participants, in adult and pediatric research. Core concerns are eliciting participant preferences on sharing results with family and on choice of a representative to make decisions about sharing after participant death.

Background: Diabetes prevalence continues to increase, with most diabetes patients managed in primary care. Aim: This report quantifies the number of diabetes consultations undertaken by primary healthcare nurses in Auckland, New Zealand. Methods: Of 335 primary healthcare nurses randomly selected, 287 (86%) completed a telephone interview in 2006–2008. Findings: On a randomly sampled day (from the past seven) for each nurse, 42% of the nurses surveyed (n=120) consulted 308 diabetes patients. From the proportion of nurses sampled in the study, it is calculated that the number of diabetes patients consulted by primary healthcare nurses per week in Auckland between September 2006 and February 2008 was 4210, with 61% consulted by practice, 23% by specialist and 16% by district nurses. These findings show that practice nurses carry out the largest number of community diabetes consultations by nurses. Their major contribution needs to be incorporated into future planning of the community management of diabetes.

The debate about how to manage individual research results and incidental findings in genetic and genomic research has focused primarily on what information, if any, to offer back to research participants. However, increasing controversy surrounds the question of whether researchers have any responsibility to offer a participant’s results (defined here to include both individual research results and incidental findings) to the participant’s relatives, including after the participant’s death. This question arises in multiple contexts, including when researchers discover a result with potentially important health implications for genetic relatives, when a participant’s relatives ask a researcher whether any research results about the participant have implications for their own health or reproductive planning, when a participant’s relative asks whether any of the participant’s results have implications for a child’s health, and when the participant is deceased and the participant’s relatives seek information about the participant’s genetic results in order to address their own health or reproductive concerns.

The internal micro/nano-structure of anisotropically oriented polymer/CNTs composites determines their macroscopic properties. However, the connections between the two are not fully understood. The varying of CNT concentration, preparation method, and a thermodynamic parameter (e.g. temperature) can all play interconnected role. In this work, the macroscopic electrical conductivity was measured perpendicular to the film thickness of an insulating polymer (isotactic PolyPropylene, iPP) and a nano-composite of iPP with 5 weight percent of CNT. The thin films studied were sheared (anisotropically nano-structured) and non-sheared (with random internal structure). In general the effect of melt shearing induces anisotropy on the electrical transport properties of the iPP/CNT films in directions parallel and perpendicular to the direction of orientation. Our results show that for the pure iPP, resistivity slightly increases with shear at higher temperatures. When CNTs are introduced, there is a large difference between the resistivity of the sheared and non-sheared nanocomposite. The sheared PNCs when the CNTs are aligned parallel to each other, have higher resistivity, which is possibly due to the higher concentration at which the percolation threshold occurs in this arrangement. The resistivity decreases overall, as the temperature increases from 0 to 50 °C. These results show that CNTs can be used to control and fine tune the desired macroscopic physical properties of nanocomposites, by concentration and orientation, such as electrical conductivity, for applications where such properties are necessary.

Bipolar disorder can emerge in the context of organic brain pathology. In the case presented, long-standing hydrocephalus was diagnosed in a man with relatively late-onset bipolar illness who presented initially with somewhat atypical, treatment-resistant depressive symptoms. Hypomania, followed by a rapid-cycling bipolar course, subsequently developed. This report reviews the association between bipolar disorder and hydrocephalus, and examines possible neurobiological mechanisms implicated in both conditions.

Absinthe is an alcoholic drink which is becoming more widely consumed after being banned for many decades. An association between absinthe use and psychiatric symptoms, ranging from impairment of concentration to marked hallucinations and seizures, has been suggested, but evidence remains unclear. Thujone, identified as a possible psychoactive ingredient, has recently been implicated in absinthe's putative neuropsychiatric effects. This report presents a case where acute suicidality emerged during absinthe consumption; possible neurobiological aetiological mechanisms and the history of absinthe use and associated adverse effects are reviewed.

This paper outlines the concept of environmental sustain-ability (ES), shows why it is important to make it a top-priority goal, and why that will be difficult to attain but essential. The ES equation of impact = population × affluence × technology, is outlined. When the world approaches stability in both population size and the throughput of energy and materials per unit of production, we may indeed be approaching sustainability. As the world's population is apt to double every 40 years, and as only a few countries (e.g. Japan and Sweden) have managed so far to reduce the energy intensity of production, we are hurtling away from sustainability rather than even approaching it. Environmental sustainability can be approached by implementing four priorities: first, by using sound microeconomic means; second, by using sound macroeconomics to differentiate between use and liquidation of natural capital by means of environmental accounting; third, by using environmental assessment to incorporate environmental costs into project appraisal; and fourth—until the first three become fully achieved—by following operational guidelines for sustainability. Thus:

1) Sound Microeconomic Means involve: (1) Getting the prices right: to reflect full social marginal opportunity cost; use the ‘full cost’ principle, or the ‘cradle-to-grave’ approach. (2) Repealing perverse fiscal incentives. (3) Strengthening the ‘polluter pays’ principles. (4) Including non-monetary values in project justification. (5) Adopting the transparency principle that markets can function efficiently only if relevant information is available at low cost. This involves the participation of people in decisions affecting them, and advertising who is polluting what and by how much.

2) Sound Macroeconomics by Environmental Accounting is essential to discern decapitalization and to shift to using income rather than drawing down capital assets. Environmental accounting clarifies what is liquidation of natural capital from what is income. This is essential because decapitalization is frequently confused as income. Environmental accounting warns us when liquidation of potentially renewable resources exceeds their regeneration rates, such as in many forests.

3) Environmental Assessment is part of the project selection process. The purpose of EA is to ensure that the development options under consideration are environmentally sustainable. Any environmental consequences should be addressed in project selection, planning, siting, and design. EAs identify ways of preventing, minimizing, mitigating, or compensating for, adverse impacts.

4) Sustainability Guidelines: Until the first three rules are heeded and duly acted on, the following guidelines will be necessary: 1, Output Rule:—waste emissions from a project should be within the assimilative capacity of the local environment to absorb without unacceptable de-gradation of its future waste-absorptive capacity; and 2, Input Guide:—harvest rates or renewable resource inputs should be within regenerative capacity of the natural system that generates them. Depletion rates of non-renewable resource inputs should not exceed the rate at which renewable substitutes are developed by human invention and investment.

Excitation of f- and p- modes by Reynolds stresses and entropy fluctuations is reviewed. Approximations made to allow semi-analytic analysis are discussed. The spectrum of solar convection is presented and shown to NOT be separable into independent spatial and temporal factors. An appropriate fitting formula is presented.

Time-distance local helioseismology has been analyzed using numerical simulations. One approach is simulation of solar surface convection on supergranule scales (48 Mm wide by 20 Mm deep). A surface shear layer develops. There is a continuous increase in the horizontal scale of the convective motions with increasing depth. Some small granular scale downflows at the surface are swept sideways by diverging larger scale upflows from below to merge into stronger downdrafts in these larger downflow boundaries. Elsewhere, some granular downflows have to beat their way against the upflows from below are halted. These simulations have a rich spectrum of f- and p- modes that turn within the computational domain. Cross-correlations between each surface location and each location below the surface reveals the wave propagation pattern from the surface. Waves at the surface that propagate into the interior, spread horizontally and are refracted back toward the surface. Time-distance diagrams have been constructed and inverted to determine the subsurface flows, which can then be compared with the average flows in the simulation.

A second approach calculates the propagation of linearized waves through a fixed, but non-uniform, background state. Some examples of such analysis are presented.

P-mode oscillations in the Sun and stars are excited stochasticly by Reynolds stress and entropy fluctuations produced by convection in their outer envelopes. The excitation increases with increasing effective temperature (until envelope convection ceases in the F stars) and also increases with decreasing gravity.

We present a very unusual case of an acoustic neuroma involving the left cochlea and internal auditory canal of a 24-year-old man. Clinical suspicion was aroused when the patient presented with a left total sensorineural hearing loss and continuing vertigo. The diagnosis was made pre-operatively with MRI after initial CT scanning was normal. The tumour was removed via a transotic approach. This case report demonstrates the MRI features of an intracochlear schwannoma and emphasizes the importance of MRI in patients with significant auditory and clinical abnormalities with normal CT scans of the relevant region.

Single crystal layers of gallium arsenide have been grown on <111> and <100> oriented GaAs substrates using a flowing solution of gallium saturated with GaAs. With this novel technique, growth rates as high as 9.Oµm/min have been achieved for 5 minutes, while rates of approximately Aµmlmin are typically achieved for 20 minutes of growth. These figures are in good agreement with a previously developed theoretical model and are about two orders of magnitude greater than those for conventional, static solution, liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) for layer thicknesses greater than lµm. Undoped, p-doped and n-doped layers of high crystallographic and electronic quality have been grown. A description of the technique and some of the electro-optical properties are presented in this paper.
