We performed an epidemiological investigation and genome sequencing of severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to define the source and scope of an outbreak in a cluster of hospitalized patients. Lack of appropriate respiratory hygiene led to SARS-CoV-2 transmission to patients and healthcare workers during a single hemodialysis session, highlighting the importance of infection prevention precautions.

An experiment was conducted to determine the population dynamics of barnyardgrass under a range of weed management treatments in glyphosate-resistant (GR) cotton in Australia. These treatments consisted of glyphosate herbicide only (Glyphosate only), glyphosate herbicide plus a combination of conventional or integrated weed management practices (Glyphosate + IWM), glyphosate herbicide plus a reduced residual herbicide program (Glyphosate + Res.), glyphosate herbicide plus a grass herbicide (Glyphosate + Grass), and a combination of conventional weed management practices (IWM only). The experiment investigated the effects of weed management on the weed seed bank, weed emergence patterns, and weed populations. After three years, all treatments resulted in commercially acceptable control of barnyardgrass. However, treatments containing soil-applied residual herbicides proved more effective over the period of the experiment. Seed bank reductions were in the order of 100-fold over the period of the experiment for treatments that received residual herbicides compared to 10- to 20-fold reductions for treatments that did not. The experiment highlighted the importance of early-season weed control, as well as the importance of an integrated approach to weed management with residual herbicides to control later-emerging weeds in GR cotton.

Following the ‘prompt’ radio outburst seen soon after the neutrino emission in SN 1987A (Turtle et al. 1987), we initiated a program to monitor the supernova at the Tidbinbilla Deep Space Communications Complex at 8.4 GHz in a search for radio emission from the expanding remnant. No radio emission has been detected to date (DOY 151, May 30 1988).

Assisting another person's suicide is a criminal offence in England and Wales, although the offence is rare and the law allows for charges not to be brought where there has been no criminal intent. Campaigners for ‘assisted dying’ want something else – a law licensing assisted suicide in advance for certain groups of people in certain circumstances. The present law has been challenged in the courts, hitherto unsuccessfully, as incompatible with article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The Supreme Court has taken the view that, given its social policy implications, this is a matter that Parliament is better placed to consider than the courts.

The detection of fast (< 1 second) transient signals requires a challenging balance between the need to examine vast quantities of high time-resolution data and the impracticality of storing all the data for later analysis. This is the epitome of a “big data” issue—far more data will be produced by next generation-astronomy facilities than can be analyzed, distributed, or archived using traditional methods. JPL is developing technologies to deal with “big data” problems from initial data generation through real-time data triage algorithms to large-scale data archiving and mining. Although most current work is focused on the needs of large radio arrays, the technologies involved are widely applicable in other areas.

Atmospheric pollution over cities accumulates under light wind or stagnation conditions and, on occasion, may be supplemented by transport from distant sources. These conditions cannot easily be predicted by use of the average weather elements. However, material which is useful to decision-makers who are concerned with air pollution problems can be obtained by presenting the data, as in the case of Durban, South Africa, first in terms of the nature and characteristics of vertical mixing in the lower atmosphere, and secondly in terms of the horizontal transport of air. In this way the nature and characteristics of surface and non-surface inversions and mixingdepths, as well as of macro- and meso-scale atmospheric circulations, can more easily be appreciated. In addition, a measure of the air pollution potential can be obtained from daily maximum mixing-depth and win-speed values.

The objective of interest-groups is to influence policy. Conflict is inevitable when two or more interest-groups are in competition for scarce resources. It then becomes the responsibility of the state to accommodate or resolve the conflict. However, an additional complexity occurs if the state agencies are themselves undergoing transformation, as has recently occurred in South Africa.

These issues are explored, using as a case-study the conflict that occurred between environmental interestgroups and a mining company over an application to dredge-mine the sand dunes that line the eastern shores of Lake St Lucia in Natal. The nature and objectives of these groups is discussed, and the role of the press in the controversy is analysed. The interests of black settlers who wish to return to their ancestral lands following the collapse of apartheid are shown to complicate further the dilemma that confronts state policymakers. The changing nature of the ‘decision environment’ in South Africa is addressed, and group theory is used to explain the relationship between state agencies and the mining, environmental, and black settler group, interests. Stages in the policy environment to match the modes of change over the period of political transformation in South Africa are identified by levels of conflict and ambiguity in a contingency model.

Working within a large geographic area, McDonald Observatory lacks the resources to send staff to present professional development workshops to teachers – and only limited numbers of teachers have the resources to attend workshops at our observatory. Our solution is the development of a new program to bring the workshop to teachers in their own communities through videoconferencing. Each workshop location has a co-facilitator who prepared for his/her duties through an orientation/training session held at McDonald Observatory. At the observatory, they experienced a variety of activities and selected the ones most suitable for the grade-levels of the teachers in their region; they recruit the teachers for the local workshop. Each videoconference session includes pre/post assessment of the participants, an interactive videoconference with an expert presenter, and assistance from the co-facilitator who manages the materials and assists with the activities. Through use of this technology, we expect to reach 500 teachers. An independent evaluator is preparing formative and summative evaluation for the project.

This triennium began with an action to re-create the Terms of Reference for the Working Group Global VLBI (WG-GV). These had been lost over the years since the Group was established in 1990. Fortunately, the personal archive of one long-term member yielded a copy of the original memorandum by R. D. Ekers, which was found to coincide quite well with current practice and areas of interest. New Terms of Reference, based on modern conditions, were drafted and accepted by both IAU and URSI.

Child–parent attachment quality with an adoptive caregiver at age 4 years was examined in a sample of 111 children adopted into the United Kingdom following early severe deprivation in Romania and a comparison group of 52 nondeprived within–United Kingdom adoptees. Findings indicated that, compared with nondeprived adoptees, children who experienced early severe deprivation were less likely to be securely attached and more likely to show atypical patterns of attachment behavior; ordinary forms of insecure attachment were not associated with deprivation. Within the sample of deprived adoptees, there was a dose–response association between duration of deprivation and disturbances in attachment behavior. In addition, a minority of children who experienced severe early deprivation were classified as avoidant, secure, or dependent using conventional classification strategies, despite also exhibiting atypical patterns of attachment behaviors, and this was also more likely among children exposed to prolonged deprivation. The results raise both theoretical and methodological implications for attachment research on very deprived children.

Many small mammals inhabiting vegetation habitats where food resources are scattered have large home ranges with limited overlap. One way that they may effectively defend large territories is to establish dominance over the limited number of sites that provide good protection from predators, since displacement from these sites could have a very high cost to intruders. To examine this hypothesis we studied the fine-scale use of habitat and spatial dispersion of all adult male Mus spretus inhabiting a 1.1 ha grassland study site near Lisbon, Portugal, by radio telemetry, at the start of the breeding season. The location of each of the 10 males was mapped every hour, 24 h/day for up to seven days. Microhabitat characteristics were compared between a random sample of points in the study site and those where mice were found. Individual ranges did not overlap, despite the close proximity of their borders and the occupation of almost all suitable habitat, suggesting that individual dispersion was strongly influenced by the presence of neighbours; mean range size was 343 ± 95 m2. Residents covered less than one-third of their total range over 24 h, though neighbours did not intrude despite the apparent opportunities. Each male territory overlapped the territory of at least two females. Mice were neither nocturnal nor crepuscular, moving around mostly during the morning and evening. They avoided open woodland or pathways, preferring grassland sites with tall vegetation and sites where shrubs, bramble, or dead wood provided additional cover. Most fixes per male (70%) were located in one to four core areas, which represented only a tiny proportion of each range (6.9 ± 0.9%). Although exclusive defence of large complex ranges is likely to be impracticable, defence of core areas seems much more feasible. Our results thus support our hypothesis that mice may be able to maintain large exclusive ranges due to a combination of high predation pressure and a limited number of sites with sufficient ground and overhead cover. This will result in a very high risk to mice entering areas where competitors have priority of access to protected sites.

VLBI observations of the nucleus of Centaurus A were made in April, 1982 at two frequencies with an array of five Australian radio antennas as part of the Southern Hemisphere VLBI Experiment (SHEVE). Observations were undertaken at 2.29 GHz with all five antennas, while only two were operational at 8.42 GHz. The 2.29 GHz data yielded significant information on the structure of the nuclear jet. At 8.42 GHz a compact unresolved core was detected as well.

Six radio telescopes were operated as the first southern hemisphere VLBI array in April and May 1982. Observations were made at 2.3 and 8.4 Ghz. This array produced VLBI images of 28 southern hemisphere radio sources, high accuracy VLBI geodesy between southern hemisphere sites, and subarcsecond radio astrometry of celestial sources south of declination −45 degrees. This paper discusses only the astrophysical aspects of the experiment.

Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and optical positions of 8 radio stars are compared in the J2000.0 system. The mean differences in right ascension and declination found are +0.02″ ± 0.04″ and −0.02″ ± 0.07″, respectively. These differences show that the JPL radio celestial reference frame is aligned on a preliminary FK5 frame to at least this level.

Atmospheric fluctuations and hydrogen maser clock instabilities limit the coherence time (Tcoh) and hence the signal-to-noise ratio of VLBI data , to a few minutes at GHz frequencies. However, Tcoh can be increased up to many hours if a phase reference is established throughout the experiment by using a strong source observed alternatively with the program source. Weak celestial radio sources with flux densities in the milliJansky range at centimeter wavelengths, such as radio stars, fast pulsars and faint components of extragalactic sources, can then be reliably detected by this VLBI technique, simultaneously providing accurate astrometry relative to the reference source.
