The X-Shooter Spectral Library (XSL) contains more than 800 spectra of stars across the color-magnitude diagram, that extend from near-UV to near-IR wavelengths (320-2450 nm). We summarize properties of the spectra of O-rich Long Period Variables in the XSL, such as phase-related features, and we confront the data with synthetic spectra based on static and dynamical stellar atmosphere models. We discuss successes and remaining discrepancies, keeping in mind the applications to population synthesis modeling that XSL is designed for.

The aim of this study is to determine abundance ratios and star formation histories (SFH) of dwarf ellipticals in the nearby Virgo cluster. We perform a stellar population analysis of 39 dEs and study them using index-index and scaling relations. We find an unusual behaviour where [Na/Fe] is under-abundant w.r.t. solar while [Ca/Fe] is over-abundant.

We present the structural and star formation properties of 59 void galaxies as part of the Void Galaxy Survey (VGS). Our aim is to study in detail the physical properties of these void galaxies and study the effect of the void environment on galaxy properties. We use Spitzer 3.6μ and B-band imaging to study the morphology and color of the VGS galaxies. For their star formation properties, we use Hα and GALEX near-UV imaging. We compare our results to a range of galaxies of different morphologies in higher density environments. We find that the VGS galaxies are in general disk dominated and star forming galaxies. Their star formation rates are, however, often less than 1 M⊙ yr-1. There are two early-type galaxies in our sample as well. In re versus MB parameter space, VGS galaxies occupy the same space as dwarf irregulars and spirals.

Voids represent a unique environment for the study of galaxy evolution, as the lower density environment is expected to result in shorter merger histories and slower evolution of galaxies. This provides an ideal opportunity to test theories of galaxy formation and evolution. Imaging of the neutral hydrogen, central in both driving and regulating star formation, directly traces the gas reservoir and can reveal interactions and signs of cold gas accretion. For a new Void Galaxy Survey (VGS), we have carefully selected a sample of 59 galaxies that reside in the deepest underdensities of geometrically identified voids within the SDSS at distances of ∼100 Mpc, and pursued deep UV, optical, Hα, IR, and HI imaging to study in detail the morphology and kinematics of both the stellar and gaseous components. This sample allows us to not only examine the global statistical properties of void galaxies, but also to explore the details of the dynamical properties. We present an overview of the VGS, and highlight key results on the HI content and individually interesting systems. In general, we find that the void galaxies are gas rich, low luminosity, blue disk galaxies, with optical and HI properties that are not unusual for their luminosity and morphology. We see evidence of both ongoing assembly, through the gas dynamics between interacting systems, and significant gas accretion, seen in extended gas disks and kinematic misalignments. The VGS establishes a local reference sample to be used in future HI surveys (CHILES, DINGO, LADUMA) that will directly observe the HI evolution of void galaxies over cosmic time.

In recent years a considerable amount of new data has become available about stellar populations in the central regions of galaxies. I will discuss what stellar populations can tell us about the formation origin of bulges, and how this relates to the formation of the central regions in giant and dwarf ellipticals. In particular I will concentrate on results from integral field spectroscopy and Spitzer imaging at 3.6, 4.5 and 8 microns.

The present work shows the Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) in the infrared using the IRTF stellar library, obtained using models based on Single Stellar population Models (SSP). We have focused on the K band in order to compare with observables of elliptical galaxies. We also present the comparisons of our models with velocity dispersions, ages and metallicities obtained with models in the optical range.

NGC 5128 at 3.8 Mpc is the nearest large elliptical galaxy and is ideally suited to a detailed study of its planetary nebula population. Two spectroscopic programmes are summarised. More than 1200 PNe candidates are known from imaging campaigns in NGC 5128 and accurate radial velocities of 1070 have been measured with the VLT FLAMES/Giraffe spectrometer. From these data a variety of studies of the galaxy kinematics are enabled, such as search for PN sub-groups, representing the relics of accretion of small galaxies. Emission line spectra were observed with VLT FORS and the light element abundances determined for 40 PNe through photoionization modelling. A spread in O abundance of about 0.9 dex is found but no obvious radial gradient out to 19 kpc. Comparison of the O abundance from these PN with the metallicity for the stellar population in the neighbourhood of the PN will probe the star formation and enrichment history of the galaxy. Full results from this analysis will be presented in a forthcoming paper.

We discuss some recent integral field spectroscopy using the SAURON instrument of a sample consisting of 24 early-type spirals, part of the SAURON Survey, and 18 late-type spirals. Using 2-dimensional maps of their stellar radial velocity, velocity dispersion, and absorption line strength, it is now much easier to understand the nature of nearby galactic bulges. We discuss a few highlights of this work, and point out some new ideas about the formation of galactic bulges.

Supermassive black holes are a key element in our understanding of how galaxies form. Most of the progress in this very active field of research is based on just ~30 determination of black hole masses, accumulated over the past decade. We illustrate how integral-field spectroscopy, and in particular our OASIS modeling effort can help improve the current situation.

Using the unique dataset obtained within the course of the SAURON project, a radically new view of the structure, dynamics and stellar populations of early-type galaxies has emerged. We show that galaxies come in two broad flavours (slow and fast rotators), depending on whether or not they exhibit clear large-scale rotation, as indicated via a robust measure of the specific angular momentum of baryons. This property is also linked with other physical characteristics of early-type galaxies, such as: the presence of dynamically decoupled cores, orbital structure and anisotropy, stellar populations and dark matter content. I here report on the observed link between this baryonic angular momentum and a mass sequence, and how this uniquely relates to the building of the red sequence via dissipative/dissipationless mergers and secular evolution.

We present results on the stellar populations of a sample of 18 late-type spirals, based on data acquired with the integral-field spectrograph SAURON at the WHT. We present the two-dimensional line-strength maps, the central line indices, and estimate the star formation time-scale. In an exponentially declining SFR scenario, we find a trend between the time-scale τ and the central velocity dispersion: more massive galaxies show shorter burst durations. A detailed study on these data is published by Ganda et al. (2007).

Massive star formation in the central regions of spiral galaxies plays an important role in the dynamical and secular evolution of their hosts. Here, we summarise a number of recent investigations of the star formation history and the physical conditions of the gas in circumnuclear regions, to illustrate not only the detailed results one can achieve, but also the potential of using state-of-the-art spectroscopic and analysis techniques in researching the central regions of galaxies in general. We review how the star formation history of nuclear rings confirms that they are long-lived and stable configurations. Gas flows in from the disk, through the bar, and into the ring, where successive episodes of massive star formation occur. A detailed analysis of the ring in NGC 7742, where we use similar data to determine the physical conditions of the line emitting gas using a combination of ionisation and stellar population modelling, is described in a second poster paper (these proceedings, p. 000; Mazzuca et al. 2006).

We discuss SAURON absorption line strength maps of a sample of 24 early-type spirals, mostly Sa. From the Lick indices Hβ, Mgb and Fe 5015 we derive SSP-ages and metallicities. By comparing the scaling relations of Mg b and Hβ and central velocity dispersion with the same relation for the edge-on sample of Falcón-Barroso et al. (2002) we derive a picture in which the central regions of Sa galaxies contain at least 2 components: one (or more) thin, disc-like component, often containing recent star formation, and another, elliptical-like component, consisting of old stars and rotating more slowly, dominating the light above the plane. If one defines a bulge to be the component responsible for the light in excess of the outer exponential disc, then many Sa-bulges are dominated by a thin, disc-like component containing recent star formation.

Spiral galaxies can be affected by interactions in clusters, that also may distort the internal velocity field. If unrecognized from single-slit spectroscopy, this could lead to a wrong determination of the maximum rotation velocity as pointed out by Ziegler et al. 2003. This parameter directly enters into the Tully--Fisher relation, an important tool to investigate the evolution of spiral galaxies. To overcome this problem, we measure the 2D-velocity fields by observing three different slit positions per galaxy using FORS2 at the VLT providing us with full coverage of each galaxy and an adequate spatial resolution. The kinematic properties are compared to structural features determined on the HST/ACS images to assess possible interaction processes. As a next step, the whole analysis will be performed for three more clusters, so that we will be able to establish a high-accuracy TFR for spirals at z∼0.5.

We summarize results from McDermid et al. (2006), who present a set of follow-up observations of the sauron representative survey of early-type galaxies. We used the oasis integral-field spectrograph (while at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope) to obtain high spatial resolution spectra of 28 elliptical and lenticular galaxies. These seeing-limited data have on average twice the spatial resolution of the sauron data, albeit over a smaller field. These new data reveal previously unresolved features in these objects' stellar kinematics, stellar populations, and ionized gas properties. In this contribution, we focus on the discovery of a population of compact kinematically decoupled cores in a number of our sample galaxies. These compact cores are related to regions of young stars, and counter-rotate around the host galaxy's minor axis. We compare these objects to previously known decoupled components, which in contrast are composed of old stars, and which rotate around axes unrelated to the host galaxy's kinematics or shape. A key difference between these two kinds of decoupled cores are their physical size and relative mass. The compact decoupled cores are smaller than a few hundred parsec, and constitute less than a few percent of the total galaxy mass. The ‘classical’ decoupled cores exist on kiloparsec scales, and comprise around a factor 10 more mass. We suggest that the small components are only found with young ages because of their low mass-to-light ratio. We show that after a few Gyrs, these components ‘fade’ into the background galaxy, making them more difficult to detect. We draw the following conclusions: 1) young stars found in early-type galaxies are very often associated with centrally-concentrated counter-rotating components; 2) the small mass fraction and kinematic decoupling of these cores suggests that the star formation is associated to minor accretion events, which effectively drive the spread in luminosity-weighted ages found in early-type galaxies; and 3) such decoupled components may be common in all early-type galaxies, but not directly observed due to their small contribution to the total galaxy light at older ages.

We present integral-field observations of kinematically decoupled components (KDCs) in a sample of 24 Sa galaxies part of the SAURON Survey. We show how the V/σ maps can be used to highlight the presence of the KDC and investigate their stellar populations (i.e. age) to understand their origin (i.e. secular vs hierarchical scenarios). We find that KDCs can be long-lived and are typically well aligned with the galaxies kinematical major axis, supporting mounting evidence that secular evolution becomes important at intermediate redshifts. Dynamically colder ones seem to host younger stellar populations. We also relate these features to the ones found in our sample of 48 elliptical and lenticular galaxies. We find that there is no age vs size relation for these decoupled components in Sa galaxies, suggesting that the dominant factor determining their size is the amount of star formation they have been subject to during their life time.

We present line-strength maps of a sample of 18 late-type spirals. The data have been taken using SAURON at the WHT. Apart from the maps, we present the central line indices, and estimate the star formation time-scale. The MAGPOP-ITP is a large observational project of the EU MAGPOP Network. In order to study the star formation history of dwarf galaxies, a total of 60 nights was allocated on the 4 large La Palma telescopes in the framework of an International Time Programme. The programme comprises continuum, Hα and near-infrared imaging and optical spectroscopy of quiescent and star-forming dwarfs in the field and in the Virgo Cluster. All galaxies in the sample are selected to have imaging in the UV (by GALEX) and in the optical (by SDSS), and many have additional data available in the GOLDMine database.

The aim of the programme is to study the star formation of dwarf galaxies in function of their environment and dwarf type. In this contribution, I will focus on the results obtained for dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) using long-slit optical spectroscopy obtained with the NOT. We derive mean luminosity-weighted ages and metallicities using Lick indices for 25 dEs.

The dEs show a large spread in both ages and metallicities, but overall they are younger and less metal-rich than normal ellipticals (Es). The [α/Fe] ratios of the dEs are compatible with solar ratios, or are even slightly underabundant, pointing at prolonged star formation histories for dEs.
