Objectives: We compared rates of myopericarditis adverse events and evaluated potential risk factors of development. We compared rates of dermatological–neurological adverse events (severe and serious) with other adverse events in a specific population of deployed US military personnel who received or did not receive ACAM2000 vaccine (ie, Vaccinia smallpox live vaccine). Methods: Up to 20,000 military personnel recipients were enrolled in a prospective observational cohort study: up to 15,000 ACAM2000 recipients in cohort 1 and up to 5,000 military personnel who were eligible for ACAM2000 vaccination but were not vaccinated due to recent vaccination or characteristics of their contacts in cohort 2. Enrollment was at a 3:1 ratio, respectively. Serum specimens and data were collected at the initial visit and 10 days later (cf, window of 6–17 days). Study participants with evidence, either clinical or laboratory, of possible myopericarditis were referred to a blinded independent review committee for further evaluation and adjudication. The primary analysis was logistic regression with adjudicated myopericarditis as the dependent variable and age, sex, race, and exercise regimen as the independent variables. Results: Initial data and serum specimens were obtained from 14,667 participants (cohort 1, N = 10,825; cohort 2, N = 3,842). According to protocol, 2 visits were completed by 12,110 participants (cohort 1, N = 8,945; cohort 2, N = 3,165), and 125 participants (cohort 1, N = 111; cohort 2, N = 14) were referred for myopericarditis adjudication, of whom 1 had confirmed myocarditis, 5 had suspected myocarditis, 1 had suspected pericarditis, and 54 (cohort 1, N = 44; cohort 2, N = 10) had subclinical myopericarditis. The unadjusted myopericarditis rates were 5.7 per 1,000 (95% CI, 4.3–7.5) for cohort 1 and 3.2 per 1,000 (95% CI, 1.7–5.8) for cohort 2. The unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios for myopericarditis for cohort 1 and cohort 2 were 1.8 (95% CI, 0.9–3.6) and 1.3 (95% CI, 0.6–2.6), respectively. At least 1 serious adverse event was experienced by 117 participants (1.1%) in cohort 1 and 13 (0.3%) in cohort 2. No serious and severe neurological or dermatological adverse events were reported. Conclusions: ACAM2000 vaccination was associated with a modest but nonsignificant increase in the risk of myopericarditis in this prudently screened, young and healthy service-member population. Objectives: Over the past 2 years, many infection prevention and control (IPC) resources have been diverted to manage the COVID-19 pandemic. Its impact on the incidence of antimicrobial-resistant organisms has not been adequately studied. We investigated the impact of the pandemic on the incidence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) in Singapore. Methods: We extracted data on unique CRE isolates (clinical and/or surveillance cultures) and patient days for 6 public hospitals in Singapore from the carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CaPES) study group database, and we calculated the monthly incidence of CRE (per 10,000 patient days). Interrupted time-series (ITS) analysis was conducted with the pre–COVID-19 period defined as before February 2020, and the COVID-19 period defined as after February 2020. Statistical analyses were performed using Stata version 15 software. Results: From January 2017 to March 2021, 6,770 CRE isolates and 9,126,704 patient days were documented. The trend in CRE monthly incidence increased significantly during the pre–COVID-19 period (0.060; 95% CI, 0.033–0.094; P < .001) but decreased during the COVID-19 period (−0.183; 95% CI, −0.390 to 0.023; P = .080) without stepwise change in the incidence (−1.496; 95% CI, −3.477 to 0.485; P = .135). The trend in monthly incidence rate of CRE clinical cultures increased significantly during the pre–COVID-19 period (0.046; 95% CI, 0.028–0.064; P < .001) and decreased significantly during COVID-19 period (−0.148; 95% CI, −0.249 to −0.048; P = .048) with no stepwise change in the incidence (−0.063; 95% CI, −0.803 to 0.677; P = .864). The trend in monthly incidence rate of CRE surveillance cultures decreased during the pre–COVID-19 period (−0.020; 95% CI, −0.062 to 0.022; P = .341) and the COVID-19 period (−0.067; 95% CI, −0.291to 0.158; P = .552) without stepwise change in the incidence (−1.327; 95% CI, −3.535 to 0.881; P = .233). Conclusions: The rate of CRE in clinical cultures decreased during COVID-19 but not the rate in surveillance cultures. Further studies are warranted to study the impact of COVID-19 on CREs.

We report a reduction in the vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) rate from a peak of 1.5 cases per 1,000 admissions (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0−2.1) in August 2012 to 0.5 per 1,000 admissions (95% CI: 0.3−1.0) by January 2015, associated with a bundle of interventions.

Bioethics has made remarkable progress as a scholarly and applied field. A mere fledgling in the 1960s, it is now firmly established in hospitals, medical schools, and government agencies and boasts a number of professional associations and a handsome collection of journals.


We ask if Earth-like planets (terrestrial mass and habitable-zone orbit) can be detected in multi-planet systems, using astrometric and radial velocity observations. We report here the preliminary results of double-blind calculations designed to answer this question.


White OLEDs (WOLEDTMs) fabricated using energy efficient phosphorescent OLED (PHOLEDTM) technology open up exciting new ways to develop efficient white lighting. WOLEDs have the potential to transform the lighting industry. In this presentation, phosphorescent WOLEDs with high conductivity transport layers will be discussed. White light can be generated by partial energy transfer from blue to green and red. Single WOLED stacks are demonstrated that match the Energy Star® lighting color criteria for 2700K and 3000K with high efficiency (˜80 lm/W) and high color rendering indices (˜80). Both devices had operational lifetimes (LT70%) over 30,000 hours measured from an initial luminance of 1,000 cd/m2. Different techniques to improve optical outcoupling will also be discussed.

The deposition and post-treatment processes involved in the production of porous organosilicate glasses (OSGs) by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) with ultraviolet light (UV) treatment are investigated through the use of a deuterated organic porogen precursor using infrared spectroscopy and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Infrared analysis provides evidence for hydrogen-deuterium scrambling between the chemical species during the deposition process, which is exacerbated by the UV treatment process. Analysis of 13C cross-polarized magic angle spinning (CP-MAS) NMR suggests that the porogen exists in domains relatively isolated from the network, in agreement with short UV treatment time morphological data that indicates the pore size is relatively constant from the early stages of UV treatment process. The chemical and morphological information provides further support for a deposition controlled morphology and has implications towards enhanced chemical processing of porous organosilicate glass (OSG) films for back-end-of-line integrated circuit manufacturing.

Nutrigenomics is the study of how constituents of the diet interact with genes, and their products, to alter phenotype and, conversely, how genes and their products metabolise these constituents into nutrients, antinutrients, and bioactive compounds. Results from molecular and genetic epidemiological studies indicate that dietary unbalance can alter gene–nutrient interactions in ways that increase the risk of developing chronic disease. The interplay of human genetic variation and environmental factors will make identifying causative genes and nutrients a formidable, but not intractable, challenge. We provide specific recommendations for how to best meet this challenge and discuss the need for new methodologies and the use of comprehensive analyses of nutrient–genotype interactions involving large and diverse populations. The objective of the present paper is to stimulate discourse and collaboration among nutrigenomic researchers and stakeholders, a process that will lead to an increase in global health and wellness by reducing health disparities in developed and developing countries.

This work reports direct observations of the magnetic reconnection site during an eruptive process occurring on November 18, 2003. The event started with a rapid expansion of a few magnetic arcades located over the east limb of the Sun and developed an energetic partial halo coronal mass ejection (CME), a long current sheet and a group of bright flare loops in the wake of the CME. It was observed by several instruments both in space and on ground, including the EUV Imaging Telescope, the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer, and the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph experiment on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager, as well as the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Mark IV K-coronameter. We combine the data from these instruments to investigate various properties of the eruptive process, including those around the current sheet. This approach uses the features of relief on the stamps to define, with nanometer resolution, the geometry and separation of electrodes that are formed by uniform evaporation of a thin metal film onto the stamp. Soft, room temperature contact of an element of this type with an organic semiconductor film on a gate dielectric and a gate yields a high performance top contact transistor with source/drain electrodes supported by the stamp. We review here our use of this approach to study the electrical properties of the organic semiconductor pentacene in thin film transistors structures. We also introduce a method for using the same techniques and structures to probe transport through organic monolayers.

A 480 year record of the oxygen-isotope ratios, dust content, chemical species and net accumulation from ice cores drilled in 1989 90 on Dyer Plateau in the Antarctic Peninsula is presented. The continuous analyses of small (sub-annual) samples reveal well-preserved annual variations in both sulfate content and δ18O, thus allowing an excellent time-scale to be established.

This history reveals a recent pronounced warming in which the last two decades have been among the warmest in the last five centuries. Furthermore, unlike in East Antarctica, on Dyer Plateau conditions appear to have been fairly normal from AD 1500 to 1850 with cooler conditions from 1850 to 1930 and a warming trend dominating since 1930. Reconstructed annual layer thicknesses suggest an increase in net accumulation beginning early in the 19th century and continuing to the present. This intuitive conflict between increasing net accumulation and depleted δ18O (cooler climate) in the 19th century appears widespread in the peninsula region and challenges our understanding of the physical relationships among moisture sources, air temperatures and snow accumulation. The complex meteorological regime in the Antarctic Peninsula region complicates meaningful interpretation of proxy indicators and results in a strong imprint of local high-frequency processes upon the larger-scale climate picture.
