Phase change nanodot arrays were fabricated using self-assembly diblock copolymer template PS-b-PMMA (polystyrene-poly (methyl-methacrylate)) and studied by time resolved X-ray diffraction. The size of the nanodots was less than 15nm in diameter with 40nm spacing. This method is quite flexible regarding the patterned materials, and can be used on different substrates. The crystallization behavior of small scale phase change nanodot arrays was studied for different materials, such as Ge15Sb85, Ge2Sb2Te5 and Ag and In doped Sb2Te. It was found that the nanodots had higher crystallization temperatures compared to their corresponding blanket films and crystallized over a broader temperature range.

Ultramicrotomy, the technique of cutting nanometers-thin slices of material using a diamond knife, was applied to prepare transmission electron microscope (TEM) specimens of nanoporous poly(methylsilsesquioxane) (PMSSQ) thin films. This technique was compared to focused ion beam (FIB) cross-section preparation to address possible artifacts resulting from deformation of nanoporous microstructure during the sample preparation. It was found that ultramicrotomy is a successful TEM specimen preparation method for nanoporous PMSSQ thin films when combined with low-energy ion milling as a final step. A thick, sacrificial carbon coating was identified as a method of reducing defects from the FIB process which included film shrinkage and pore deformation.

A series of model ferritic alloys and two commercial steels were used to develop a correlation between tensile yield strength and nano-indentation hardness measurements. The NanoIndenterII® was used with loads as low as 0.05 gf (0.490 mN) and the results were compared with conventional Vickers microhardness measurements using 200 and 500 gf (1.96 and 4.90 N) loads. Two methods were used to obtain the nanohardness data: (1) constant displacement depth and (2) constant load. When the nanohardness data were corrected to account for the difference between projected and actual indenter contact area, good correlation between the Vickers and nanohardness measurements was obtained for hardness values between 0.7 and 3 GPa. The correlation based on constant nanoindentation load was slightly better than that based on constant nanoindentation displacement. Tensile property measurements were made on these same alloys, and the expected linear relationship between Vickers hardness and yield strength was found, leading to a correlation between measured changes in nanohardness and yield strength changes.

This paper describes a technique developed to determine values for the dislocation barrier strength of the defects believed to be responsible for the embrittlement of light water reactor (LWR) pressure vessel steels. Microstructures consisting of a single defect type were introduced by ion irradiation or thermal annealing, and the defect distributions were determined by TEM. Hardness changes were measured using a nano indenter and the dislocation barrier strengths for the defects involved were computed based on a dispersed barrier hardening model.

Of twelve variables known in Messier 56 in Lyra, two, V1 and V6 are the subject of this paper. VI was discovered by Shapley (1920) and first determined by Sawyer Hogg (1942) to be a Cepheid with a period of 1.5 days. V6 was discovered by Sawyer Hogg (1940) from her early plates at the David Dunlap Observatory. Later Sawyer Hogg (1949) showed it to be an RV Tauri type with a period of 90.02 days, one of the first such to be identified in a globular cluster. A.H.Joy (1949) determined spectral type and radial velocity for both of these variables.
