  • In classical Athens, a funeral speech was delivered for dead combatants almost every year, the most famous being that by Pericles in 430 BC. In 1981, Nicole Loraux transformed our understanding of this genre. Her The Invention of Athens showed how it reminded the Athenians who they were as a people. Loraux demonstrated how each speech helped them to maintain the same self-identity for two centuries. But The Invention of Athens was far from complete. This volume brings together top-ranked experts to finish Loraux's book. It answers the important questions about the numerous surviving funeral speeches that she ignored. It also undertakes a comparison of the funeral oration with other genres that is missing in her famous book. What emerges is a speech that had a much greater political impact than Loraux thought. This volume puts the study of war in Athenian culture on a completely new footing.

    'Urbicide' is a Latin formation - as deployed in this chapter, it refers to the total or near-total destruction of cities (poleis) of the ancient Greek/Hellenic world between the 6th and the 4th centuries BCE. Urbicide was an extreme measure of interstate politics, but not as rare as one might have predicted - or hoped. It represented the other, dark side of the ancient Greeks' fierce attachment to their own native polis. In some cases a polis might be removed from the map once and for all (e.g. Arisba on the island of Lesbos). In others, it might be only temporarily annihilated (Thebes). In all cases, the possibility of largescale enslavement of formerly free Greek citizens was ever-present, and often was realised.

    Six decades ago (my chronology is as exact as that of Thucydides’ ‘pentekontaëtia’), A. (‘Tony’) Andrewes, Oxford’s Wykeham Professor, laid down a number of markers for the ways in which a historian of late fifth-century BC Greece (such as he – and I) could or properly should make use of a famous pair of Thucydidean speeches, for purposes of historical reconstruction and analysis.1 Since 1962, there has been a plethora of scholarship published on Thucydidean historiography in general, and on the speeches/rhetoric in particular, some of it very good, including great work by Andrewes himself in Commentary mode.2 But the issues raised in and by the ‘Mytilenaean Debate’ and indeed by Thucydides’ inchoate History as a whole have not gone away, and they will not do so any time soon.3
