Two introduced carnivores, the European red fox Vulpes vulpes and domestic cat Felis catus, have had extensive impacts on Australian biodiversity. In this study, we collate information on consumption of Australian birds by the fox, paralleling a recent study reporting on birds consumed by cats. We found records of consumption by foxes on 128 native bird species (18% of the non-vagrant bird fauna and 25% of those species within the fox’s range), a smaller tally than for cats (343 species, including 297 within the fox’s Australian range, a subset of that of the cat). Most (81%) bird species eaten by foxes are also eaten by cats, suggesting that predation impacts are compounded. As with consumption by cats, birds that nest or forage on the ground are most likely to be consumed by foxes. However, there is also some partitioning, with records of consumption by foxes but not cats for 25 bird species, indicating that impacts of the two predators may also be complementary. Bird species ≥3.4 kg were more likely to be eaten by foxes, and those <3.4 kg by cats. Our compilation provides an inventory and describes characteristics of Australian bird species known to be consumed by foxes, but we acknowledge that records of predation do not imply population-level impacts. Nonetheless, there is sufficient information from other studies to demonstrate that fox predation has significant impacts on the population viability of some Australian birds, especially larger birds, and those that nest or forage on the ground.

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) of the quokka wallaby, Setonix brachyurus, grows and changes throughout life. To investigate factors that determine changes in the quokka RPE, we have examined topography of this tissue in experimentally enlarged eyes. Unilateral eyelid suture was conducted at the time of normal eye opening, postnatal day (P) 110, and animals were examined at 1 or 1½ years of age. The numbers and densities of RPE cells and the extent of multinucleation were compared with those in normal animals. Eyelid suture resulted in a 9.8% and 17.4% increase in retinal area at 1 and 1½ years, respectively; a significant degree of myopia was associated with this enlargement. Cell density topography in experimental eyes was not the same as in controls. Cells from central retina were disproportionately larger in the experimental than control eyes. However, the RPE cell topography in sutured eyes was not the same as that of aged retinae of a similar size. Notably, in sutured eyes there was no development of the high or highest cell densities seen in equatorial and temporal central RPE in aged retinae, respectively. Furthermore, the degree of cell enlargement in peripheral regions was slight compared with that observed in similar-sized, aged retinae. There was no increase in RPE cell number; rather, average cell area increased accompanied by no change or a slight decrease in RPE thickness. Consequently, overall volume of cells did not change significantly. The large number of multinucleate cells normally seen in aged animals was not observed in experimentally enlarged eyes, implying that an increase in cell volume may be the trigger for multinucleation.

We examined the relationship between giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) and Acacia nigrescens in Kruger National Park, South Africa, to determine whether these tall ungulates may be providing a pollination service for the trees, or are simply flower predators. We quantified florivory and subsequent fruit set in the presence and absence of giraffes. Acacia nigrescens flowers are clearly a substantial dietary component for giraffes. Although A. nigrescens flowers contain almost three times as much condensed tannin as leaves, giraffes consume large quantities of flowers (∼85% of flowers within reach), resulting in distinct browse lines on the trees. This substantial florivory is detrimental to the overall fecundity of A. nigrescens, with significantly reduced fruit set at heights on trees that are accessible to giraffes. Fruit set increased above the reach of giraffes, suggesting successful pollination by insects. Giraffes were effectively flower predators of A. nigrescens in the season we examined.

Objective: A key aspect of the role of clinicians caring for patients in the setting of advanced illness focuses on attending to the needs of informal caregivers during the end-of-life period. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to complement and enrich existing quantitative findings regarding caregiver burden near the end of life, and (2) to identify potential solutions to caregivers' unmet needs in an effort to assist clinicians in the development of clinical interventions.

Methods: This qualitative study, using focus groups and content analysis of transcripts, was conducted in a comprehensive cancer center in Washington, DC. Seven focus groups were held: three with recently bereaved caregivers and four with active caregivers of patients with metastatic cancer and an expected survival of 6 to 12 months.

Results: Data were stratified into two broad categories: (1) general problems and (2) behaviors/activities that were helpful/would have been helpful in alleviating these problems. Within each of these two categories, five subcategories emerged: medical care (including provision of information, coordination of care, bedside manner, satisfaction with care), quality of life (including well-being, role adjustments), help from others (including practical assistance, social support), positives of caregiving, and unsolicited themes (including job flexibility, impact of the disease on the family, informational needs, relationship with patient).

Significance of results: Results suggest caregivers may benefit from more information about patient prognosis and hospice, attention to quality-of-life issues, and enhanced, direct communication with clinicians. Although information of this nature is likely to be known to palliative care clinicians, the specific details and verbal insights provided by caregivers give an important voice to existing quantitative data and may provide more detailed information to assist palliative care clinicians seeking to develop interventions to meet caregiver needs during the period near the end of life.

Macrotermes mounds are a significant feature of African woodland landscape, contributing to habitat heterogeneity. The mounds are massive, often many centuries old, and support dense vegetation and a suite of woody plant species scarce in surrounding woodland. The present study tested the hypothesis that Zimbabwean Macrotermes mounds, with their greater niche availability, were more heavily utilized by small vertebrates than the surrounding miombo woodland. We carried out a survey of amphibian, reptile and mammal species during early and late rains for 16 termite mounds and 16 adjacent woodland habitat sites, and compared numbers of individuals, species and diversity. For amphibians and reptiles, individual numbers and species did not differ significantly between habitats and their activity was more influenced by season. For mammals, however, significantly more individuals and species were captured on termite mounds, with three species captured only on mounds (most notably the musk shrew Crocidura hirta spp. complex) and all others showing marked preference for this habitat. The greater number of mammals on termite mounds contributed to total small vertebrate biomass being 800 g/ha for termite mounds compared with 380 g/ha in woodland. For mammals certainly, Macrotermes mounds provide significant food and habitat in miombo woodland.
