The loss of large frugivores leads to seed dispersal loss and regeneration failure of numerous large-seeded trees near mother trees. Although Janzen–Connell effects are considered as the primary underlying cause, other factors remain understudied. Here, we used a field experiment to test the impact of flesh persistence on the recruitment of two large-seeded Sapotaceae species that lost their dispersers. In the rainforest of Mare Longue (Réunion), we sowed 3840 seeds in a four-factor design: seed treatment (seed cleaning; flesh persistence), canopy closure (understory; gap), year of sowing (01/2018; 11/2019) and species (Labourdonnaisia calophylloides, Mimusops balata). We also used camera traps to evaluate the impact of extant vertebrates. Seed treatment was by far the most influential factor: flesh persistence led to seedling recruitment divided by 3,2 on average, mainly due to failure of germination or seedling emergence. There were also significant variations in recruitment between species, years and canopy closure levels, notably due to the behaviour of the invasive fauna, especially giant snails that could unexpectedly restore recruitment by feeding on fruit flesh. Together, our results demonstrate strongly depleted recruitment due to flesh persistence and the importance of field experiments to understand the processes at work in complex ecosystems with novel plant–animal interactions.

Host–microbial co-metabolism products are being increasingly recognised to play important roles in physiological processes. However, studies undertaking a comprehensive approach to consider host–microbial metabolic relationships remain scarce. Metabolomic analysis yielding detailed information regarding metabolites found in a given biological compartment holds promise for such an approach. This work aimed to explore the associations between host plasma metabolomic signatures and gut microbiota composition in healthy adults of the Milieu Intérieur study. For 846 subjects, gut microbiota composition was profiled through sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene in stools. Metabolomic signatures were generated through proton NMR analysis of plasma. The associations between metabolomic variables and α- and β-diversity indexes and relative taxa abundances were tested using multi-adjusted partial Spearman correlations, permutational ANOVA and multivariate associations with linear models, respectively. A multiple testing correction was applied (Benjamini–Hochberg, 10 % false discovery rate). Microbial richness was negatively associated with lipid-related signals and positively associated with amino acids, choline, creatinine, glucose and citrate (−0·133 ≤ Spearman’s ρ ≤ 0·126). Specific associations between metabolomic signals and abundances of taxa were detected (twenty-five at the genus level and nineteen at the species level): notably, numerous associations were observed for creatinine (positively associated with eleven species and negatively associated with Faecalibacterium prausnitzii). This large-scale population-based study highlights metabolites associated with gut microbial features and provides new insights into the understanding of complex host–gut microbiota metabolic relationships. In particular, our results support the implication of a ‘gut–kidney axis’. More studies providing a detailed exploration of these complex interactions and their implications for host health are needed.

For many species abundance data from across their entire range are incomplete, and therefore it is difficult to accurately assess their conservation status. Even for species that are large, charismatic and relatively easy to study, conservation assessments are often hampered by lack of data. Here we report a marked, previously undescribed, increase in numbers at a breeding colony of the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta, a species that is Critically Endangered in several parts of its range, and place this report in the global context for this species. We present a 10-year (2008–2017) dataset of nesting activities for this species on the island of Sal, one of the Cape Verde islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Foot patrols recorded 21,938 nests during the study period. We estimate that the annual number of nests on Sal increased from 506 in 2008 to 7,771 in 2017. Taking into account that there are only two known loggerhead turtle rookeries (on Masirah Island, Oman, and in Florida, USA) with > 50,000 nests reported annually, and few with > 1,000 nests per year, our results suggest that Sal is one of the 10 largest loggerhead turtle rookeries globally. Our work highlights the conservation significance of reporting trends in abundance at breeding sites for marine turtles and other taxa.

We introduce a new understanding of deontic modals that we call obligations as weakest permissions. We argue for its philosophical plausibility, study its expressive power in neighborhood models, provide a complete Hilbert-style axiom system for it and show that it can be extended and applied to practical norms in decision and game theory.

The paper deals with deterministic optimal control problems with state constraints and non-linear dynamics. It is known for such problems that the value function is in general discontinuous and its characterization by means of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation requires some controllability assumptions involving the dynamics and the set of state constraints. Here, we first adopt the viability point of view and look at the value function as its epigraph. Then, we prove that this epigraph can always be described by an auxiliary optimal control problem free of state constraints, and for which the value function is Lipschitz continuous and can be characterized, without any additional assumptions, as the unique viscosity solution of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The idea introduced in this paper bypasses the regularity issues on the value function of the constrained control problem and leads to a constructive way to compute its epigraph by a large panel of numerical schemes. Our approach can be extended to more general control problems. We study in this paper the extension to the infinite horizon problem as well as for the two-player game setting. Finally, an illustrative numerical example is given to show the relevance of the approach.

Post-AGB stars are key objects for the study of the dramatic morphological changes of low- to intermediate-mass stars on their evolution from the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) towards the planetary nebula stage. There is growing evidences that binary interaction processes may very well have a determining role in the shaping process of many objects, but so far direct evidence is still weak. We aim at a systematic study of the dust distribution around a large sample of post-AGB stars as a probe of the symmetry breaking in the nebulae around these systems. We used imaging in the mid-infrared to study the inner part of these evolved stars to probe direct emission from dusty structures in the core of post-AGB stars in order to better understand their shaping mechanisms. We imaged a sample of 93 evolved stars and nebulae in the mid-infrared using VISIR/VLT, T-Recs/Gemini South and Michelle/Gemini North. We found that all the the proto-planetary nebulae we resolved show a clear departure from spherical symmetry. 59 out of the 93 observed targets appear to be non resolved. The resolved targets can be divided in two categories. The nebulae with a dense central core, that are either bipolar and multipolar. The nebulae with no central core have an elliptical morphology. The dense central torus observed likely host binary systems which triggered fast outflows that shaped the nebulae.

Summary

Background and objectives: Infraclavicular plexus block has many advantages of particular interest in the emergency setting. However, the number of nerve stimulations needed to optimize the technique remains unclear. We evaluated both the local anaesthetic requirement and the success rate of Sim's derived infraclavicular plexus block performed with a nerve stimulator when either one or two responses were sought. Methods: In this prospective study, 50 patients who presented for distal upper limb surgery were randomized into two groups: in Group 1, ropivacaine 0.75% 40 mL was injected when nerve stimulation elicited a distal motor response (median, ulnar or radial). In Group 2, only 30 mL of the same local anaesthetic was injected, 7 mL to the musculocutaneous nerve and 23 mL to the median, ulnar or radial nerves. Sensory and motor blocks were tested at 5-min intervals over 30 min. Results: The time to perform the block was similar in both groups. The success rate of the block increased from 80% in the single-stimulation group to 92% in the double-stimulation group (not significant). The onset time of sensory and motor block was shorter and block extension was greater in ulnar, antebrachial cutaneous and brachial cutaneous nerve distributions in the multistimulation group (P < 0.05). Conclusions: We conclude that only 30 mL of local anaesthetic seems to be sufficient to ensure a high level of success when performing an infraclavicular block with stimulation of both the musculocutaneous nerve and median, ulnar or radial nerve.

Encarsia sp. is the main solitary endoparasitoid developing on the larvae of the cotton whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), in western Burkina Faso. The biological control potential of this parasitoid is currently under investigation. Studies of some population parameters and biological control assays have been undertaken in the laboratory and greenhouse. Encarsia sp. can develop on the four larval stages of B. tabaci obtained in our study conditions, 7 to 15 days after oviposition. The highest rates of parasitism were recorded on the third and fourth larval stages of B. tabaci. The duration of Encarsia development was shorter on the third and fourth than on the first and second instars. The emergence rate of the F1 generation was high (>80%) and seemed not to be related to the different host stages. The sex-ratio favoured females (6:1). Encarsia adults have a relatively short lifespan (<5 days) and males live twice as long as females. In experimental cages, parasitism levels fluctuated over time, and significantly increased with the number of parasitoids introduced. This study constitutes an important advance in assessing the potential of Encarsia sp. for biological control of B. tabaci in cotton crops in Burkina Faso.

The femtosecond (fs) lasers display noticeable specificities compared with the nanosecond (ns) ones operating in the UV domain, and classically used for the pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) technique. The ultra-short laser pulses offer the feature of minimal thermal damage induced in the target material, and the very high intensities (1012-14 W/cm2) available with fs lasers are likely to allow the ablation of any kind of materials, even the wide band gap insulators.

The morphology, structure, composition and properties of the films obtained by fs PLD are studied according to the experimental growth conditions, the nature of the target material, and the dynamic expansion of plasma plume. In the case of ZnO, smooth, dense and nanocrystalline films (10 to 30 nm crystallites) can be epitaxially grown on adequate substrates (i.e. sapphire). On the contrary, BaTiO3 films are formed by the random stacking of aggregates (10 to 200 nm) leading to a non negligible surface roughness,. In addition, the chemical composition of fs PLD thin films of multicomponent compound (i.e. BaTiO3) is not homogeneous, an enrichment in the lighter element being observed in the central part of the film. These properties are related to the phenomena taking place during the various steps of the process (laser-matter interaction, plasma formation, expansion) through time resolved emission spectroscopy and plume optical imaging measurements.
