The thought of greater loss of brain tissue in Deficit Syndrome (DS) i.e. subgroup of schizophrenia with enduring primary negative symptoms defined by Carpenter et al.; this has not been verified by recent studies.

Accumulated researches suggest that enlargement in Lateral Ventricles (LV) is related with current negative symptoms and poor prognosis. However, this has not been validated in DS.

Our aim is to study the association between the enduring negative symptoms and LV changes schizophrenia. We included both deficit and non-deficit patients for comparison with controls.

Forty-five patients (18 DS, 27 non-DS) and 37 healthy controls were recruited, evaluated for positive and negative symptoms, depression and extrapyramidal symptoms. Structural magnetic resonance imaging was performed. LV was assessed by MANCOVA (gender, age total brain volume as confounding factors) in 3-dimensional (3D) shape analyses. Correlations between clinical and imaging data were analyzed by Pearson correlation coefficient; P > 0.05 being significant.

LV of patients was found to be greater than controls, especially in regions adjacent to parietal and temporal regions but no significant difference between subgroups was detected. Enlargement in right LV by corpus callosum adjacency was found in DS. There was no correlation between negative symptoms and LV volume.

The idea of greater amount of LV enlargement in patients with predominant negative symptoms could not be observed in 3D analyses. New pathophysiological theories are needed for the explanation of negative symptoms, loss of functioning and poor prognosis rather than only commenting about tissue decrease/loss.

Although the role of neurotrophins such as nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in nasal polyps development has been studied, the contribution of neurotrophin-3 has not been evaluated yet. This study aimed to investigate the possible role of neurotrophin-3 in nasal polyps pathogenesis.

The study group comprised 70 non-allergic nasal polyps patients and the control group consisted of 53 patients with middle turbinate concha bullosa. Specimens were taken, during surgery, from the ethmoid sinus nasal polyps in the nasal polyps group and from the lateral part of the middle turbinate concha bullosa in the control group. Tissue and serum levels of neurotrophin-3 were assessed by immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively.

Nasal polyps patients had higher tissue neurotrophin-3 scores (p < 0.001). There was no statistically significant difference between groups regarding serum neurotrophin-3 levels (p = 0.417). Tissue neurotrophin-3 staining scores in the nasal polyps group had no statistically significant correlation with Lund–Mackay scores (p = 0.792).

Neurotrophin-3 may have a local effect in nasal polyps pathogenesis, without joining systemic circulation.

To investigate the likelihood of allergic rhinitis and potential co-morbidities, and to assess whether allergic rhinitis is associated with arterial blood pressure and hypertension.

In this population-based study, 369 adults with allergic rhinitis and asthma were assessed via a questionnaire and immunoglobulin E levels. There were four groups: control (n = 90), allergic rhinitis (n = 99), asthma (n = 87) and hypertension (n = 93). Arterial blood pressure was measured in all groups.

There were no significant differences in systolic or diastolic blood pressure between males and females in any group. Pairwise comparisons revealed no significant differences between: the control and allergic rhinitis groups, the control and asthma groups, or the allergic rhinitis and asthma groups. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure values of males and females were significantly higher in the hypertension group than the allergic rhinitis group. There were no significant differences in systolic blood pressure or diastolic blood pressure for seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis patients.

Rhinitis was not associated with increased blood pressure. Allergic rhinitis can coincide with asthma and hypertension. The findings do not support the need for blood pressure follow up in allergic rhinitis patients.

To evaluate the effect of agmatine sulphate on facial nerve regeneration after facial nerve injury using electron and light microscopy.

The study was performed on 30 male Wistar albino rats split into: a control group, a sham-treated group, a study control group, an anastomosis group, and an anastomosis plus agmatine sulphate treatment group. The mandibular branch of the facial nerve was dissected, and a piece was removed for histological and electron microscopic examination.

Regeneration was better in the anastomosis group than in the study control group. However, the best regeneration findings were seen in the agmatine sulphate treatment group. There was a significant difference between the agmatine group and the others in terms of median axon numbers (p < 0.004) and diameters (p < 0.004).

Agmatine sulphate treatment with anastomosis in traumatic facial paralysis may enhance nerve regeneration.

Wound healing, epithelial regrowth and collagen synthesis are very important factors in the repair of the traumatised tympanic membrane. The aim of the present study was to determine the role of plasma fibronectine in the aetiopathogenesis of tympanosclerosis.

This prospective study included 58 patients with and 49 without tympanosclerosis. No inflammation or trauma was noted in either patient group. All patients underwent otoscopic and otomicroscopic examination, and the degree of tympanosclerosis was graded from mild (stage I) to severe (stage III). Following otological examination, blood samples were taken for plasma fibronectine measurement.

Following otoscopic and otomicroscopic examinations, patients' tympanosclerosis was graded as follows: 18 patients were stage I; 29 were stage II; and 11 were stage III. Statistical analyses revealed that the plasma fibronectine concentrations were significantly lower in the study group compared with the control group (p = 0.031). In addition, fibronectine levels were lowest in the patients with severest tympanosclerosis (p = 0.0001 in each comparison).

The results of the present study show that serum fibronectine is important in the development and severity of tympanosclerosis.
