Weather conditions such as low air temperatures, low barometric pressure, and low wind speed have been linked to more cases of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. However, limited literature exists regarding the impact of air pollution. This study aims to investigate the relationship between outdoor air pollution and CO poisoning in 2 distinct cities in Turkey.

A prospective study was conducted at 2 tertiary hospitals, recording demographic data, presenting complaints, vital signs, blood gas and laboratory parameters, carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) levels, meteorological parameters, and pollutant parameters. Complications and outcomes were also documented.

The study included 83 patients (Group 1 = 44, Group 2 = 39). The air quality index (AQI) in Group 2 (61.7 ± 27.7) (moderate AQI) was statistically significantly higher (dirtier AQI) than that in Group 1 (47.3 ± 26.4) (good AQI) (P = 0.018). The AQI was identified as an independent predictor for forecasting the need for hospitalization (OR = 1.192, 95% CI: 1.036 - 1.372, P = 0.014) and predicting the risk of developing cardiac complications (OR: 1.060, 95% CI: 1.017 - 1.104, P = 0.005).

The AQI, derived from the calculation of 6 primary air pollutants, can effectively predict the likelihood of hospitalization and cardiac involvement in patients presenting to the emergency department with CO poisoning.

In recent years, cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has also started to be performed in the paediatric and CHD population. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of CRT in children with CHD.

Patients with CHD who underwent CRT treatment in our paediatric cardiology clinic between January, 2010 and January, 2020 were included in the study. Demographic findings, 12-lead electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, clinical characteristics, management strategies, and outcomes were reviewed systematically.

The study population consisted of 18 CHD patients who had been treated with CRT for 10 years in our institution. The median age was 11 years (2.2–18 years) and the median weight was 39 kg (10–81 kg). Systemic ventricle was left ventricle in 13 patients, right ventricle in 4 patients, and 1 patient had single-ventricle physiology. CRT implantation indications were as follows: dysfunction after permanent pacemaker in 11 patients, dysfunction after left bundle branch block in 4 patients, and systemic ventricular dysfunction in 3 patients. CRT implantation techniques were epicardial (n = 13), hybrid (n = 4), and transvenous (n = 1) methods. QRS duration significantly decreased after CRT implantation (160 versus 124 m/second, p < 0.05). Median systemic ventricle ejection fraction (EF) significantly increased after the procedure (30 versus 50%, p < 0.05). Fourteen patients (78%) were responders, two patients (11%) were superresponders, and two patients (11%) were non-responders after the CRT treatment. One patient deceased during follow-up. Median follow-up duration was 40 months (6–117 months).

When electromechanical dyssynchrony occurs in paediatric cases with CHD and developing heart failure, patients should be evaluated in terms of CRT to improve ventricular function. Alternative CRT therapy will be beneficial in these cases that do not improve clinically despite optimal medical treatment.

In this report, we aim to present our algorithm and results of patients with congenital cardiac disorders who underwent surgical or interventional procedures during the peak phase of the pandemics in our country.

The first COVID-19 case was diagnosed in Turkey on 11 March, 2020, and the peak phase seemed to end by the end of April. All the patients whom were referred, treated, or previously operated but still at the hospital during the peak phase of COVID-19 pandemics in the country were included into this retrospective study. Patient’s diagnosis, interventions, adverse events, and early post-procedural courses were studied.

Thirty-one patients with various diagnoses of congenital cardiovascular disorders were retrospectively reviewed. Ages of the patients ranged between 2 days and 16 years. Seventeen cases were males and 14 cases were females. Elective cases were postponed. Priority was given to interventional procedures, and five cases were treated percutaneously. Palliative procedures were preferred in patients whom presumably would require long hospital stay. Corrective procedures were not hesitated in prioritised stable patients. Mortality occurred in one patient. Eight patients out of 151 ICU admissions were diagnosed with COVID-19, and they were transferred to COVID-19 ICU immediately. Three nurses whom also took care of the paediatric cases became infected with SARS-CoV-2; however, the children did not catch the disease.

Mandatory and emergent congenital cardiac percutaneous and surgical procedures may be performed with similar postoperative risks as there are no pandemics with meticulous care and preventive measures.

Standard surgical treatment of the interrupted aortic arch with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass is risky especially in critically ill babies. In this manuscript, we present the results of off-pump pericardial roll bypass for the treatment of aortic interruption.

The technique was applied in nine critically ill infants between July 2011 and December 2019. Data were reviewed retrospectively. There were four girls and five boys. The types of the interruption were type B in six cases and type A in three babies. Additional cardiovascular anomalies were ventricular septal defect in all, atrial septal defect or patent foramen ovale in all, single-ventricle pathologies in two and bicuspid aortic valve in three cases. All the patients were in critical situations such as intubated, having symptoms of infection, congestive heart failure or ischaemia and malperfusion leading visceral organ dysfunction.

All patients underwent off-pump ascending aorta or aortic arch to descending aorta bypass with a pericardial roll. Post-operative early mortality occurred in one patient with severe mitral regurgitation due to cardio-septic shock. One patient who had single-ventricle pathology underwent bidirectional Glenn and was lost on the post-operative 26th day due to sepsis 2 years after operation. Two patients presented with dilatation of the pericardial tube 18 and 24 months after the operations and one underwent reconstruction of the neo-arch. The remaining patients are asymptomatic, active and within normal limits of body and mental growth.

Treatment of interrupted aortic arch with a bypass with an autologous pericardial roll treated with gluteraldehyde without cardiopulmonary bypass seems a safe and reliable technique especially for the treatment of critically ill infants.

To evaluate the impact of leg position on the dose distribution during intracavitary brachytherapy for cervical cancer.

This prospective study was performed on 11 women with cervical cancer who underwent intracavitary brachytherapy. After insertion of the brachytherapy applicator, two sets of computed tomography slices were taken including pelvis, one with straight leg and one with leg flexion position with knee support. The dose (7 Gy) was prescribed to point A. The radiotherapy plan was run on the Plato Planning Software System V14·1 to get the dose distributions. Also, rectum and bladder doses were measured for both leg positions during the treatment. The doses and volumes of organs were compared via the Wilcoxon signed-rank test by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 11·5 statistical software.

No significant difference regarding the dose distributions and volumes of target, sigmoid and bladder due to leg position was observed, either on 3D planning or on in vivo dose measurements. However, there were significant differences for 25 and 50% isodose coverage of rectum in favour of straight leg position (p=0·026). There were no significant differences regarding maximum doses in any critical organ.

Difference in leg position caused only a small change in rectum dose distribution and did not cause any other change in either dose distributions or in vivo measured doses of both target and critical organs during cervical brachytherapy. Straight leg position appears better with regard to rectum dose.

According to the ATLAS3D project, about 20 percent of all nearby early-type galaxies (D < 42 Mpc; MK < -21.5 mag; stellar mass Mstars ≳ 6 × 109 M⊙) outside clusters are surrounded by a disc or ring of low-column-density neutral hydrogen (Hi) gas with typical radii of tens of kpc, much larger than the stellar body.

Our aim is to understand the impact of these gas systems on the host galaxies, in particular, whether there is any recent star formation related to the Hi and effect of recent star formation on the host early-type galaxies.

We analyse the distribution of star formation out to large radii by using resolved Hi images together with UV and optical images. We calculate the UV-UV and UV-optical colours in two apertures, 1-3 and 3-10 Reff. Using FUV emission as a proxy for star formation, we also estimate the integrated star formation rate in the outer regions. Our sample consists of 18 Hi-rich galaxies as well as 55 control galaxies where no Hi has been detected. We select the control sample galaxies to match the Hi-rich galaxies in stellar mass, environment, distance and stellar kinematics.

In half of the Hi-rich galaxies the radial UV profile changes slope at the position of the Hi radial profile peak. We find that the FUV-NUV and UV-optical colours in the first and second apertures of the Hi-rich galaxies are on average 0.5 and 0.8 mag bluer than the Hi-poor ones, respectively. We also find that the Hi-rich early-type galaxies have colour gradients that are almost 2 times stronger than the Hi-poor ones. we estimate the integrated star formation rate in the outer regions (R > 1 Reff) to be on average ~ 6.1×10−3 M⊙ yr−1 for the Hi-rich galaxies. We find that the gas depletion time in the outermost region (3-10 Reff) is ~ 80 Gyrs, which is similar to that estimated for the outskirts of spirals.

Studying the stellar populations in early type galaxies with and without Hi, we find that galaxies with Hi generally show UV and UV-Optical colours in the outer parts that are bluer than those of early-type galaxies without Hi. This shows that the Hi is actively involved in recent star formation. The star formation rate in the outer regions is too low to build a stellar disc, and therefore change the morphology of the host even when integrated over several Gyrs. Star formation in outermost regions does not depend on the type of the galaxies.

The 12-lead electrocardiogram shows a broad range of abnormal patterns in trained athletes. The primary end point of this study was to investigate P wave dispersion, and P wave durations and related factors in different genders applying for registration to the School of Physical Education and Sports.

From 2006 to 2009, a total of 2093 students – 1674 boys with a mean age of 19.8 plus or minus 1.9 years and 419 girls with a mean age of 19.1 plus or minus 1.8 years – were included in the study. All 12 leads of the resting electrocardiogram were evaluated for P wave dispersion and electrocardiogram abnormalities. Baseline parameters such as age, body weight, body height, and body mass index, as well as electrocardiogram findings such as P wave maximal duration and P wave dispersion, were significantly higher in boys than in girls. Of all the parameters tested with correlation analysis, only gender (p = 0.03) (r = 0.04), body weight (p < 0.001) (r = 0.07), body height (p = 0.004) (r = 0.06), and body mass index (p = 0.01) (p = 0.05) were correlated with P wave dispersion.

The frequencies of all electrocardiogram abnormalities, P wave dispersion, and P wave maximal duration were higher in boys as compared with girls in an unselected student population applying for registration to the School of Physical Education and Sports; in addition, P wave dispersion was correlated with gender, body weight, body height, and body mass index.

Studies show that anti-epileptic drugs increase oxidative stress. Thus, low-density lipoprotein oxidation increases and atherogenesis is induced. Paraoxonase-associated high-density lipoprotein protects low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein oxidation. The effects of anti-epileptic drugs on paraoxonase activity has not been investigated yet. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of anti-epileptic drugs on paraoxonase activity, lipid profiles, folat, vitamin B12, homocysteine, thyroid hormones, apolipoprotein A-1, total anti-oxidant capacity, malondialdehyd, nitric oxide, and oxidised low-density lipoprotein. The association with carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity and current biochemical parameters had been searched for assessing the effects of anti-epileptic drugs on the vascular system.

We recruited 59 epileptic patients treated with anti-epileptic drugs and 23 controls (group IV) at least 6 months ago. The epileptic group was divided into three groups by receiving anti-epileptic drugs as follows: group I: carbamazepine, group II: valproic acid, and group III: carbamazepine and valproic acid. Arterial distensibility was assessed with the Complior device.

There was no difference between the current biochemical parameters in epileptic children. Serum-free T4 was decreased, when compared with group IV. Thyroid-stimulating hormone was increased in group II, compared with group IV. The carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity was increased in group III, compared with group IV. The carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity was correlated with thyroid-stimulating hormone and valproic acid levels.

Anti-epileptic drugs may induce atherogenesis by affecting the thyroid hormones. According to the current data, the effects of thyroid hormones on vascular system may be independent of other biochemical markers. Epileptic patients using anti-epileptic drugs must be followed closely for arterial stiffness, and also for the development and progression of atherosclerosis.

The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of endogenous melatonin on arterial distensibility using measurements of the velocity of the aortic pulse wave between the carotid and femoral arteries in healthy young students assessed in the supine position.

We studied 29 healthy young students, aged between 18 and 27 years, with 19 being male. The measured the velocity of the aortic pulse wave between the carotid and femoral arteries, along the blood pressures and heart rate, while the subjects were in the supine position at two time points, namely from 01.30–02.30 and 13:30–14:30 hours, during a day, also taking plasma to measure the concentrations of melatonin. The velocity of the pulse waves was determined using an automatic device, the Complior Colson (France), which allowed on-line recording and automatic calculation of the velocity, the calculations being made by measuring the transit time of the pulse wave as it traversed the distance between two sites of recording according, the velocity of the pulse wave in meter per second being equal to the distance in meters divided by the time of transit in seconds.

Although the velocity of the pulse wave, systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressures, and heart rate were all increased in the morning relative to measurement made later in the day, levels of melatonin in the plasma were increased in the night. There was negative correlation between diurnal levels of melatonin and the velocity of the pulse wave.

Our findings indicate that increased levels of melatonin during the night may cause a decreased velocity of the aortic pulse wave, along with blood pressures and heart rate.
