The Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has been previously associated with Zika virus infection. We analysed the data from all the patients with GBS diagnosis that were admitted to a referral hospital, in Tapachula City during the period from January 2013 to August 2016, comparing the incidence of GBS according to the temporality of the Zika outbreak in Southern Mexico. Additionally, we described the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the GBS patients admitted before or after the Zika outbreak. We observed a sharp increase in the number of patients hospitalised due to GBS from the time the first confirmed Zika cases appeared in Mexico. Clinically we observed GBS cases before zika outbreak had more frequently history of respiratory/gastrointestinal symptoms and GBS during zika outbreak had significantly more frequently recent history of rash/conjunctivitis. Although we cannot affirm that the increased cases of GBS have a specific aetiologic association with Zika, our results suggest that this observed outbreak of in Tapachula, might have been associated to the emerging Zika epidemic, locally and suggests that rare complications associated with acute infections (such as GBS) might be useful in the surveillance systems for emerging infections.

Hernia is defined as the protrusion of one or several internal organs through an opening in the cavity that contains them due to a tissue defect, abdominal wall surgery by means of synthetic meshes is the most common method used for hernia repair, however, postsurgical effects can range from some discomfort, to chronic pain and even the reappearance of the hernia due to a poor mechanical adaptability between the synthetic tissue and the host tissue. The knowledge of the mechanical properties of the materials involved in hernia repair is fundamental in the understanding and subsequent solution of this type of problems. In this work, experimental data were obtained by means of uniaxial tensile tests in two perpendicular directions of commercial meshes used in hernia repair. The tests were carried out on the UniVert® machine of the CellScale® brand. Anisotropic mechanical behavior is observed due to the structure of the mesh and the interaction between each of the yarns that make it up. The data found vary with respect to the direction of traction and also has non-linear hyperelastic behavior, so the adjustment of curves was made through a hyperelastic model in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software through the Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm for the characterization of these materials.

Hydrogenated microcrystalline Silicon-Germanium (μc-SiGe:H) thin films were deposited using the Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) technique from a gas mixture of SiH4, GeH4, H2 and Ar at a substrate temperature of 200 ° C. The films were deposited at a pressure of 1.5 Torr, while the RF power was varied in the range of 20 W to 35 W. Structural, optical and electrical characterization was performed in the films, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was performed in order to analyze the hydrogen bonding of silicon and germanium, while Raman spectroscopy was used in order to analyze the crystallinity of the films. Through the optical and electrical characterization of the films, parameters such as the optical band gap (Eg) and the activation energy (EA) were obtained, respectively. The conductivity of the films changed up two to orders of magnitude from dark conditions to illumination AM 1.5. Finally, the correlation between deposition RF power and the film properties is presented.

The purpose of this work is to study the effect of SiO2- and Al2O3-NPs on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the weld bead (WB) created by a process of Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) between two AISI 1025 steel plates. Also it was necessary consider the chemical compositions of slags and burned fluxes, in order to determine the elements that are deposited and contribute in the final microstructure of WB. The welding materials to form each WB were a M12K electrode, a commercial fused flux (CFF) and AISI 1025 steel plates bevelled at 45°. In addition SiO2- or Al2O3-NPs an ethylic alcohol mixture were applied directly to the beveled surfaces, just before the SAW process, which was carried out according to the AWS A5.17 norm. Microstructural and phase changes at the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) and Welding Zone (WZ) were analysed by metallographic Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopies. The mechanical properties of the WBs were determined through Tensile, Charpy impact and Vickers Hardness tests. By means of metallography of WBs, it was determined that the length of the AF needles increases in 113 and 183 % when adding SiO2- or Al2O3-NPs, respectively. Related to the mechanical properties of the WB, the tensile and yield strength decreases with both additions, SiO2- or Al2O3-NPs. The microhardness at WZ was found to decrease by adding such oxide-NPs. Moreover, the impact energy absorbed by the WBs increases approximately by 83 or 57% due to SiO2- or Al2O3-NPs addition, respectively.

Building materials are very complex samples of worldwide importance; hence quantitative knowledge of their mineralogical composition is necessary to predict performances. Rietveld quantitative phase analysis (RQPA) allows a direct measurement of the crystalline phase contents of cements. We highlight in this paper the use of laboratory X-ray powder diffraction (LXRPD) employing high-energy radiation, molybdenum (Mo), for attaining the RQPA of cements. Firstly, we evaluate the accuracy of RQPA employing a commercial calcium sulfoaluminate clinker with gypsum. In addition to MoKα1 and MoKα1,2 radiations, Cu and synchrotron patterns are also analyzed for the sake of comparison. Secondly, the assessment of the accuracy of RQPA results obtained using different radiations (synchrotron, Mo, and Cu) and geometries (reflection and transmission) is performed by analyzing two well-known commercial samples. As expected, for LXRPD data, accuracy in the RQPA results improves as the irradiated volume increases. Finally, three very complex aged hydrated cements have been analyzed using MoKα1-LXRPD and Synchrotron-XRPD. The main overall outcome of this work is the benefit for RQPA of using strictly monochromatic MoKα1 radiation. Best laboratory results arise from MoKα1 data as the effective tested volume is much increased but peak overlapping is not swelled.

Fluorellestadite, Ca10(SiO4)3(SO4)3F2, has been synthesized as single phase. This compound crystallizes in the apatite type structure, s.g. P63/m, with parameters a=9.4417(1) Å, c=6.9396(1) Å and V=535.76(1) Å3. The refinement of its crystal structure converged to RWP=12.33% and RF=4.58%. The atomic parameters have been used to analyze the phase content of mineralized white Portland clinkers. These clinkers contain Ca3SiO5, Ca2SiO4, Ca12Al14O32F2 and Ca10(SiO4)3(SO4)3F2. The agreement between the elemental composition inferred from the Rietveld phase analysis and that measured by XRF is noteworthy. This comparison does not take into account the presence of amorphous phases and unmodeled elemental substitutions in crystalline phases. Similar Rietveld studies on commercial white Portland clinkers are also shown to be feasible.

Single crystals of gypsum were studied in a diffractometer equipped with a CCD two-dimensional detector. The microstructure of the crystal gave wide poorly shaped spots showing sometimes curved streaks around the spots, which made the integration process very difficult, yielding a low quality structure. The crystal structure and microstructure of gypsum has been studied by high-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction of a ground single crystal. The intensities in the synchrotron powder pattern can be reliably fitted although the peak shape displays anisotropic peak broadening. The Rietveld results for gypsum were a=6.522 91(3) Å, b=15.197 63(9) Å, c=6.522 91(3) Å, β=118.479(1)°, V=494.536(5) Å3 and Z=4 (s.g. I2/c) with RWP=5.39% and RF=1.64%. We have also studied the influence of the structural description used for gypsum in a synchrotron Rietveld quantitative phase analysis of a standard mixture containing 50 wt % of CaSO4⋅2H2O and Al2O3. Finally, the effects of the type of preferred orientation correction for laboratory X-ray powder data are also discussed. © 2004 International Centre for Diffraction Data.

Gemstones are pieces of materials that once cut and polished are used as jewels or adornments. Gemstones may be single crystal (such as diamonds), polycrystalline (such as lapis lazuli), or amorphous (such as amber). In any case, gems may have inclusions that may yield a variety of optic effects. It is also important to unravel the crystal structure of the inclusion(s) in order to determine the origin of the gem and to help to understand their formation mechanism. Here, we expand the use of powder diffraction to identify crystalline inclusions in bulk gemstones highlighting Mo Kα radiation to penetrate within compact gems. Initially, rock crystal quartz with rutile needles was investigated and rutile diffraction peaks were more conspicuous in the Mo pattern than in the Cu pattern. Next, rock crystal quartz with beetle legs was characterized and the red iron oxide inclusion was identified as hematite. The study of a fake gem, glass showing aventurine effect, gave the diffraction peaks of metallic copper. Later, polycrystalline gems, moss agate, and aventurine quartz were also studied. The powder patterns of these compact gemstones could be successfully fitted using the Rietveld method. Finally, we discuss opportunities for further improvements in laboratory powder diffraction to characterize inclusions in compact gems.

We report our main results on the development of un-cooled microbolometers based on hydrogenated amorphous Germanium-Silicon (a-GexSiy:H) thermo-sensing films deposited by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD). Our research has been conducted to improve both, the structure of the devices (pixels) and the performance characteristics of the amorphous Germanium-Silicon thermosensing films.

Our motivation is to produce microbolometers with much better performance characteristics (larger thermal coefficient of resistance, larger conductivity and better stability) than those available in commercial microbolometer arrays, based on boron doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H,B).

As part of our latest research, we also report the study of what we believe is the next generation of thermosensing films based on Silicon and Geranium amorphous films with embedded nanocrystals in the amorphous matrix (polymorphous films). Those materials have several advantages over amorphous, as a lower defect density, better stability and better transport properties.

In this work, we report the characterization of Spin-On Glass (SOG) as low temperature gate insulator. Our SOG film was deposited at temperature of 200°C, which is compatible to use on flexible substrates. The optical and electrical characterization showed that the refractive index and dielectric constant are very close to those of thermally grown SiO2. Also, analysis of surface roughness by AFM is presented. We demonstrated the use of SOG as gate insulator, fabricating and characterizing inverted staggered a-SiGe:H TFTs. The observed results are promising and suggest that SOG films deposited at 200°C in the Laboratory of Microelectronics of INAOE could be an alternative to improve electrical characteristics of TFTs on low temperature flexible substrates.

The science of extra-solar planets is one of the most rapidly changing areas of astrophysics and since 1995 the number of planets known has increased by almost two orders of magnitude. A combination of ground-based surveys and dedicated space missions has resulted in 560-plus planets being detected, and over 1200 that await confirmation. NASA's Kepler mission has opened up the possibility of discovering Earth-like planets in the habitable zone around some of the 100,000 stars it is surveying during its 3 to 4-year lifetime. The new ESA's Gaia mission is expected to discover thousands of new planets around stars within 200 parsecs of the Sun. The key challenge now is moving on from discovery, important though that remains, to characterisation: what are these planets actually like, and why are they as they are?

In the past ten years, we have learned how to obtain the first spectra of exoplanets using transit transmission and emission spectroscopy. With the high stability of Spitzer, Hubble, and large ground-based telescopes the spectra of bright close-in massive planets can be obtained and species like water vapour, methane, carbon monoxide and dioxide have been detected. With transit science came the first tangible remote sensing of these planetary bodies and so one can start to extrapolate from what has been learnt from Solar System probes to what one might plan to learn about their faraway siblings. As we learn more about the atmospheres, surfaces and near-surfaces of these remote bodies, we will begin to build up a clearer picture of their construction, history and suitability for life.

The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory, EChO, will be the first dedicated mission to investigate the physics and chemistry of Exoplanetary Atmospheres. By characterising spectroscopically more bodies in different environments we will take detailed planetology out of the Solar System and into the Galaxy as a whole.

EChO has now been selected by the European Space Agency to be assessed as one of four M3 mission candidates.
