The trend of global cooling across the Cenozoic transformed the North American landscape from closed forest to more open grasslands, resulting in dietary adaptations in herbivores in response to shifting resources. In contrast, the material properties of the predator food source (muscle, skin, and bone) have remained constant over this transition, suggesting a corresponding lack of change in predator dietary adaptations. We investigated the North American mammalian predator fossil record using a tooth-shape metric and body mass, predicting that the former would exhibit stability. Instead, we found that mean molar morphology became more blade-like, with our tooth-shape metric sharply increasing in the late Eocene and remaining high from the Oligocene onward. Subsequent tests in extant carnivorans reveal taxa with more bladelike teeth are prevalent in more open environments. Our results reveal an unexpected functional shift among North American predators in response to large-scale environmental changes across the Cenozoic.

Linkage fabrics are gaining in popularity and finding applications in architecture, aerospace, healthcare, and fashion because they can deliver materials with bespoke flexibility and strength through the geometric design of linkage nodes. In this article, we provide a perspective on linkage fabrics as a new class of programmable materials. We describe the theory and design principles of these linkage fabrics and show how they can be designed and simulated using digital tools, and fabricated using 3D printing. This digital approach overcomes a major obstacle to the adoption of these materials, namely their complexity. We show how simulation methods can be verified and calibrated through experimental testing. This perspective article also discusses design-led research challenges for linkage fabrics such as the development of wearable assistive devices for those with physical disabilities.

Animals under human care are exposed to a potentially large range of both familiar and unfamiliar humans. Human-animal interactions vary across settings, and individuals, with the nature of the interaction being affected by a suite of different intrinsic and extrinsic factors. These interactions can be described as positive, negative or neutral. Across some industries, there has been a move towards the development of technologies to support or replace human interactions with animals. Whilst this has many benefits, there can also be challenges associated with increased technology use. A day-long Animal Welfare Research Network workshop was hosted at Harper Adams University, UK, with the aim of bringing together stakeholders and researchers (n = 38) from the companion, farm and zoo animal fields, to discuss benefits, challenges and limitations of human-animal interactions and machine-animal interactions for animals under human care and create a list of future research priorities. The workshop consisted of four talks from experts within these areas, followed by break-out room discussions. This work is the outcome of that workshop. The key recommendations are that approaches to advancing the scientific discipline of machine-animal interactions in animals under human care should focus on: (1) interdisciplinary collaboration; (2) development of validated methods; (3) incorporation of an animal-centred perspective; (4) a focus on promotion of positive animal welfare states (not just avoidance of negative states); and (5) an exploration of ways that machines can support a reduction in the exposure of animals to negative human-animal interactions to reduce negative, and increase positive, experiences for animals.

The assignment of the 29Si CP/MAS-NMR spectrum of naturally-occurring sepiolite clay was re-examined using 29Si COSY and 1H-29Si HETCOR pulse sequences. Each of the three main resonances at −92.1, −94.6 and −98.4 ppm has been attributed to one of the three pairs of equivalent Si nuclei in the basal plane, and the resonance at −85 ppm to Q2(Si-OH) Si nuclei. On the basis of the COSY experiment, the resonance at −92.1 ppm is unambiguously assigned to the intermediate, near-edge Si sites. The HETCOR experiment revealed that the resonance at −94.6 ppm cross-polarizes almost entirely from the Mg-OH protons, and therefore is assigned to the central Si position. The remaining resonance at −98.4 ppm correlates strongly to the protons of the structural water molecules and therefore is assigned to the edge Si sites. Nearly complete rehydration was achieved at room temperature by exposing sepiolite samples that had been partially dehydrated at 120°C to water vapor or to D2O vapor. The rehydration results support the 29Si NMR peak assignments that were made on the basis of the COSY and HETCOR experiments.

The 29Si CP/MAS-NMR spectrum corresponding to the folded sepiolite structure in which approximately one half of the structural water has been removed by heating to 350°C is reported for the first time. The chemical shift values and relative intensities are significantly different compared to the resonances that are observed in the corresponding spectrum of the true sepiolite anhydride. These observations support the earlier claim that sepiolite heated to ∼350°C exists as a distinct phase to be differentiated from that of the completely dehydrated state.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic severely affected Southeast Asia, with >35 million cases and ~360,000 deaths. Despite relatively low rates of secondary bacterial infection among inpatients with COVID-19, several countries reported increased antibiotic use; raising concerns for worsening antimicrobial resistance. We assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the use of antibiotics commonly used to treat respiratory infections in Southeast Asia. Methods: We evaluated intravenous antibiotic use among hospitalized adults in acute-care wards in 6 hospitals; 3 in Indonesia and 3 in the Philippines. We abstracted data on antibiotics that are commonly used to treat respiratory infections in these hospitals. We calculated antibiotic use rates for the 25 included antibiotics as monthly defined daily dose per 1,000 patient days (or patient discharges where patient days was unavailable) using data from pharmacy dispensing records and administrative records. Median antibiotic use rates for the prepandemic period (March 2018–February 2020) and the pandemic period (March 2020–February 2021) were compared, and percentage changes were calculated for (1) all 25 antibiotics combined; (2) ceftriaxone; (3) vancomycin and linezolid combined (anti-MRSA); and (4) broad-spectrum antibiotics with activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (anti-PSA). Monthly antibiotic use and COVID-19 patient discharges were graphed over the 36-month study period (March 2018–February 2021) to visualize trends (Fig. 1). The Wilcoxon rank-sum test was used to determine whether differences in median antibiotic use rates were statistically significant (2-tailed P < .05). Results: Overall, trends in antibiotic use were higher during months with increased COVID-19 patient discharges (Fig. 1). Use of all 25 antibiotics combined significantly increased in 4 of 6 hospitals (6.9%–63.6%) during the pandemic period compared to the prepandemic period. Ceftriaxone use significantly increased in 3 of 6 hospitals (37.1%–55.4%) and decreased in 3 of 6 hospitals (15.9%–31.9%). Anti-PSA antibiotic use significantly increased in 4 of 6 hospitals (16.1%–161.5%). Although anti-MRSA antibiotic use was low (comprising <2% of the overall included antibiotic use in Indonesia and <11% in the Philippines), use during the pandemic increased in 3 of 6 hospitals (59.8%–212.6%). Conclusions: We observed substantial increases in antibiotic use among hospitalized adults in Indonesia and the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The increased use of broad-spectrum antibiotics is concerning given the potential consequence of worsening antimicrobial resistance. Understanding how increases in antibiotic use compares to rates of bacterial infection, antimicrobial resistance, and antibiotic availability and accessibility during this time is important to contextualize results. These findings reinforce the importance of antibiotic stewardship practices to optimize antibiotic use, especially during pandemics.

The Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales (ANPS) were designed to provide researchers in the mental sciences with an inventory to assess primary emotional systems according to Pankseppian Affective Neuroscience Theory (ANT). The original ANPS, providing researchers with such a tool, was published in 2003. In the present brief communication, about 20 years later, we reflect upon some pressing matters regarding the further development of the ANPS. We touch upon problems related to disentangling traits and states of the primary emotional systems with the currently available versions of the ANPS and upon its psychometric properties and its length. We reflect also on problems such as the large overlap between the SADNESS and FEAR dimensions, the disentangling of PANIC and GRIEF in the context of SADNESS, and the absence of a LUST scale. Lastly, we want to encourage scientists with the present brief communication to engage in further biological validation of the ANPS.

Monoclonal antibody therapeutics to treat coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have been authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Many barriers exist when deploying a novel therapeutic during an ongoing pandemic, and it is critical to assess the needs of incorporating monoclonal antibody infusions into pandemic response activities. We examined the monoclonal antibody infusion site process during the COVID-19 pandemic and conducted a descriptive analysis using data from 3 sites at medical centers in the United States supported by the National Disaster Medical System. Monoclonal antibody implementation success factors included engagement with local medical providers, therapy batch preparation, placing the infusion center in proximity to emergency services, and creating procedures resilient to EUA changes. Infusion process challenges included confirming patient severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) positivity, strained staff, scheduling, and pharmacy coordination. Infusion sites are effective when integrated into pre-existing pandemic response ecosystems and can be implemented with limited staff and physical resources.

Mass asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid amplified testing of healthcare personnel (HCP) was performed at a large tertiary health system. A low period-prevalence of positive HCP was observed. Of those who tested positive, half had mild symptoms in retrospect. HCP with even mild symptoms should be isolated and tested.
