In this contribution, we present a modelling and simulation framework for parametrised lithium-ion battery cells. We first derive a continuum model for a rather general intercalation battery cell on the basis of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. In order to efficiently evaluate the resulting parameterised non-linear system of partial differential equations, the reduced basis method is employed. The reduced basis method is a model order reduction technique on the basis of an incremental hierarchical approximate proper orthogonal decomposition approach and empirical operator interpolation. The modelling framework is particularly well suited to investigate and quantify degradation effects of battery cells. Several numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the scope and efficiency of the modelling framework.

This study explores how higher temperatures influence corn yield response to planting density. Using 1990–2010 field trial data from Wisconsin and econometric models with a variety of specifications, we find that higher temperatures reduce the yield benefits of increasing planting density. However, these adverse high-temperature effects are smaller for genetically modified corn varieties, especially those with rootworm-resistant traits. Consistent with previous studies, these results support the notion that varietal improvements through genetic modification may have paved the way for higher planting densities in US corn production. Moreover, our results imply that expected in-season temperatures are important considerations when making planting density decisions.

Antipsychotics are the cornerstone in the management of psychotic disorders and schizophrenia. They are effective agents but also have a wide range of side effects. In the recent literature constipation as possible side effect has received little attention. A review of the literature concerning constipation associated with antipsychotics was performed. Overall constipation is a rarely studied or reported side effect of antipsychotic medication. Nevertheless constipation is a common side effect. Antipsychotic agents differ in their liability to induce constipation. Constipation can be severe and can lead to serious consequences such as paralytic ileus, bowel occlusion and death. Active screening, monitoring and treatment are recommended. Further research on incidence, prevalence, underlying mechanisms and preventive measures is required.

The mainstream forestry policy in many European countries is to convert coniferous plantations into (semi-natural) deciduous woodlands. However, woodlands are the main habitat for Ixodes ricinus ticks. Therefore, assessing to what extent tick abundance and infection with Borrelia spirochetes are affected by forest composition and structure is a prerequisite for effective prevention of Lyme borreliosis. We selected a total of 25 pine and oak stands, both with and without an abundant shrub layer, in northern Belgium and estimated tick abundance between April and October 2008–2010. Additionally, the presence of deer beds was used as an indicator of relative deer habitat use. Borrelia infections in questing nymphs were determined by polymerase chain reactions. The abundance of larvae, nymphs, and adults was higher in oak stands compared to pine stands and increased with increasing shrub cover, most likely due to differences in habitat use by the ticks' main hosts. Whereas tick abundance was markedly higher in structure-rich oak stands compared to homogeneous pine stands, the Borrelia infection rates in nymphs did not differ significantly. Our results indicate that conversion towards structure-rich deciduous forests might create more suitable tick habitats, but we were unable to detect an effect on the infection rate.

As regards conditions in the mould, Continuous Casting of 400 mm thick slabs can differ from conventional slab casting. Specific features of thick slab casting are reported, concerning heat fluxes, both integral and local. Local heat flux has been determined through an instrumented mould along with thermal modeling of the copper plate. Integral heat withdrawal data are compared with data from conventional slab casting. The effect of steel composition on integral and local heat extraction has been evaluated and interpreted in relation to residence times in the mould and to the relevant thermal resistances. The influence of tundish temperature on superheat in the mould and on heat removal was quantified. Oscillation mark depth and mould powder consumption have been related to heat withdrawal. Cracking defects were characterized in dependence on mould heat flux densities.
