Despite the significant advancements being made in the neurogenetics for mental health, the identification and validation of potential endophenotype markers of risk and resilience remain to be confirmed. The TWIN-E study (The Twin study in Wellbeing using Integrative Neuroscience of Emotion) aims to validate endophenotype markers of mental health across cognitive, brain, and autonomic measures by testing the heritability, clinical plausibility, and reliability of each of these measures in a large adult twin cohort. The specific gene and environmental mechanisms that moderate prospective links between endophenotype-phenotype markers and the final outcome of wellbeing will also be identified. TWIN-E is a national prospective study with three phases: I) baseline testing on a battery of online questionnaires and cognitive tasks, and EEG, MRI, and autonomic testing; II) 12-month follow-up testing on the online assessments; and III) randomized controlled trial of brain training. Minimum target numbers include 1,500 male/female twins (18–65 years) for the online assessments (Phase I and II), 300 twins for the EEG testing component, and 244 twins for the MRI testing component. For Phase III, each twin out of the pair will be randomized to either the treatment or waitlist control group to test the effects of brain training on mental health over a 30-day period, and to confirm the gene–environment and endophenotype contributions to treatment response. Preliminary heritability results are provided for the first 50% of the MRI subgroup (n = 142) for the grey matter volume, thickness, and surface area measures, and white matter diffuse tensor imaging fractional anisotropy.

Electromigration (EM) failure statistics and the origin of the lognormal deviation (σ) for Cu interconnects have been investigated by analyzing the lifetime statistics and void size distributions at various stages during EM testing. Experiments were performed on 0.18 μm wide Cu interconnects with tests terminated after specific amounts of resistance increases, or after a specified test time. Void size distributions of resistance-based, as well as time-based EM tests were obtained using focused ion beam (FIB) microscopy. The lifetime and void size distributions were found to follow lognormal distribution functions. The σ values of EM lifetime and time-based void size distributions decrease with higher percentages of resistance increase, reaching an asymptotic value of σ ∼ 0.14. In contrast, σ values of resistance-based void size distributions are significantly smaller and do not show an obvious dependence on time. The statistics of resistance-based void size distributions can mainly be accounted for by geometrical variations of the void shape, while the statistics of time-based void size distributions requires consideration of kinetic aspects of the EM process. The σ values of EM lifetime distributions at long times can be simulated based on measured void size distributions, taking into account geometrical and experimental factors of EM. In contrast, for short times the statistics of initial void formation and the kinetics of interfacial mass transport have to be considered.

Forty-three near-isogenic lines (NILs) of white clover (Trifolium repens), derived from four parental self-compatible genotypes containing the rare self-fertility allele, were inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mossae. Plant growth response (shoot and root weight and root length), shoot P uptake and mycorrhizal root infection rates were recorded 12 weeks after inoculation. There was generally a high degree of variation between individual lines in all recorded parameters. The most sensitive indicator of plant response to mycorrhizal infection was root length with almost half of all lines showing significant responses (in most cases a decrease in root length). Shoot weight was significantly different between mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal plants in nine lines. Parental genotype significantly affected both plant response to mycorrhiza as well as mycorrhizal infection rates. The results suggest that the NILs will prove useful for further studies to elucidate the molecular genetic control of the symbiosis and inform plant breeding strategies of this agronomically important species.

Stolon death, often caused by grazing or winter-kill, is a major factor determining the survival and persistence of white clover (Trifolium repens L.), the most important forage legume in UK agriculture. Since stolon morphology apparently affects stolon survival, this study was designed to assess the genetic variation for stolon characters within a white clover population from Switzerland and to assess the effects of two generations of selection for stolon characteristics on that population. Bidirectional selection was carried out simultaneously for stolon diameter (as the primary criterion of selection) and total stolon length i.e. the product of the length of the longest stolon and stolon number. Four selection lines were established: (a) plants with thick sparse stolons, (b) plants with thick profuse stolons, (c) plants with thin sparse stolons and (d) plants with thin profuse stolons. Realised heritabilities for stolon diameter, estimated in both directions and over both generations of selection, were found to lie within the range 0·28–0·44; significant shifts in population means for stolon diameter were demonstrated. Selection for thin profuse stolons and for thick sparse stolons was effective, but because of negative correlations between stolon diameter and both stolon length and number, selection for thin sparse stolons or thick profuse stolons was ineffective.

We performed a retrospective review of the charts of 252 adult, non-traumatic, prehospital cardiac arrest patients treated over a one-year period in order to assess the effectiveness of intravenous (IV) and endotracheal (ET) administration of epinephrine (0.5–1.0 mg) (EPI) in assisting restoration of a spontaneous pulse. Patients initially receiving IV-EPI were more likely to develop a spontaneous pulse earlier than those receiving a similar dose ET (7.3% vs 0.9%; p<0.01. In those patients who received a second dose of EPI, six (2.9%) regained a spontaneous pulse; each had been treated previously with IV-EPI. None who required a third dose of EPI regained a spontaneous pulse. In total, only five (2%) patients survived to discharge. We conclude that, in our system, patients who receive the currently recommended dose of EPI to treat cardiac arrest have a poor prognosis, and that IV-EPI is associated with a higher incidence of return of a spontaneous pulse compared to those treated ET.

In AIDS Bulletins Nos. 1 to 4 the Institute of Actuaries AIDS Working Party presented projections of HIV infection and AIDS based on a model developed by Wilkie. This paper explores the sensitivity of those projections to the various different assumptions which have to be made and presents results on a number of alternative sets of assumptions.

1.1 In March 1987 the Futures Committee of the Institute considered a preliminary report (Daykin, 1987) on the possible impact of AIDS in the United Kingdom and the consequences for life insurance. The Committee recommended the setting up of a Working Party to study the problem. The Working Party on AIDS was accordingly established, under the auspices of the Research Committee. The authors of this paper formed the membership of the Working Party, under the chairmanship of C. D. Daykin.

We compared the cost of antibody screening and the projected cost for hepatitis B vaccination of antibody-negative individuals at hospitals with “high prevalence” and “low prevalence” rates for hepatitis B virus antibodies among their employees. The use of hepatitis B core antibody for screening and subsequent hepatitis B vaccination of antibody-negative personnel was most cost-effective for hospitals considered to have high prevalence for hepatitis B virus antibodies among its staff, although use of hepatitis B surface antibody in this setting only increased costs by 1.4%. In a hospital with low prevalence for hepatitis B virus antibodies among its staff, use of hepatitis B surface antibody and subsequent vaccination of antibody-negative individuals was the most cost-effective approach, while use of hepatitis B core antibody for the above purposes would have increased costs by 3.4%. The use of both hepatitis B surface antibody and core antibody in either setting followed by immunization was least economical, as costs were increased by 13% and 13.5% respectively.

We concluded that hepatitis B core antibody should be used for screening in hospitals with high prevalence for hepatitis B virus antibodies among employees while hepatitis B surface antibody be used for screening in hospitals with low prevalence for hepatitis B virus antibodies among employees. A prediction of high and low prevalence for hepatitis B virus antibodies in hospital personnel may be made by knowledge of the distribution in ethnicity of staff.
