I started with this one simple idea that education should never be dissociated from life. I had no experience of teaching, no special gift for organisation, and therefore no plan which I could put before the public…. The institution grew with the growth of my own mind and life.
Describing his educational experiment in Santiniketan, Rabindranāth Tagore has indicated that he started with the intention of creating an educational system that was connected to life's totality, and that the institution had grown with his own ‘mind and life’. Accordingly, this overview of Tagore's educational theory and practice will follow the unfolding of his educational experiment in Santiniketan in conjunction with the personal growth of his rich and multifaceted life and personality. It will explore the ways in which his educational theory and method evolved and were affected by an ever-widening sense of inclusivity that developed as a result of his poetic sensitivity to nature and the arts, as well as his experiences with colonial education, aggressive nationalism, international travels, and Gāndhi's Noncooperation Movement, among other factors.
Tagore would appear to hold a distinctive position among educators as being the only internationally renowned poet and artist to create an educational system. His profound sensitivity to nature and special connection to the creative arts, as well as his strategies for developing global networks of cooperation, give him a special position in educational theory. His role in the history of international education will be considered, as well as his methods for developing creativity and awareness in the Santiniketan students through outdoor classes in a beautiful natural setting, along with music, seasonal festivals, dance dramas, student publications, and global interconnection.
Rabindranath's first major address on education,‘Shikshār herpher’ (The Vicissitudes of Education), delivered in 1892, was one of the first comprehensive critiques of English-medium education in India. It lays out a number of the educational ideals that would later play a part in his Santiniketan experiment. The address provides a strong critique of Englishmedium education and the disassociation that results from learning in a foreign curriculum, where the language and images are disconnected from a Bengali environment. A child's linguistic medium, argues Rabindranath, should be associated with his/her social and cultural environment.
‘Upendra Baxi’, the name, I read for the first time in or about 1968 just below the title ‘“The Little Done, the Vast Undone”: Some Reflections on Reading Granville Austin's The Indian Constitution’, published in the Journal of the Indian Law Institute. Impressed not only by the title and the size of the paper—107 pages—but also by its writing style, I continued to be confused about the nationality of the author until quite a few persons confirmed that he was very much an Indian who also worked at the Indian Law Institute for some time, even in the editorial team of the Journal of the Indian Law Institute. Confusion also persisted because around that time some foreign scholars like A. R. Blackshield had written quite long articles running into more than one issue of the journal, while no Indian scholar had ventured to do so until then. Later, I had the opportunity to read one of his articles, perhaps in the Jaipur Law Journal, on the issue of compensation for acquisition of property as decided in the Shantilal case, which in his opinion amounted to ‘paying peanuts for the gold coin’. The two writings showed similarity in his concern for sustaining traditional civil rights with little regard to the constitutional philosophy represented in the Directive Principles of State Policy. It was much later, perhaps after the 1975–1977 Emergency, when the Supreme Court shifted its emphasis from haves to have-nots that Professor Baxi also came up with ‘taking suffering seriously’ and removing weapons of impoverishment of people.
After shifting from the small-town Meerut College to Delhi University in 1970, sometime in late 1971 or early 1972 I heard that Professor Baxi had also been appointed as professor of law where I was a junior lecturer. I got the first opportunity to see him in person after he joined as Professor-in-Charge of Law Centre II of the Faculty of Law in 1973. Given the difference between his and my position at the university as well as the daunting impression left by his writings on me, I was always hesitant about introducing myself and talking to him.

What does it take for women to win political office? This book uncovers a gendered qualifications gap, showing that women need to be significantly more qualified than men to win elections. Applying insights from psychology and political science and drawing on experiments, public opinion data, and content analysis, Nichole M. Bauer presents new evidence of how voter biases and informational asymmetries combine to disadvantage female candidates. The book shows that voters conflate masculinity and political leadership, receive less information about the political experiences of female candidates, and hold female candidates to a higher qualifications standard. This higher standard is especially problematic for Republican female candidates. The demand for masculinity in political leaders means these women must “look like men” but also be better than men to win elections.
In this book, Molly Zahn investigates how early Jewish scribes rewrote their authoritative traditions in the course of transmitting them, from minor edits in the course of copying to whole new compositions based on prior works. Scholars have detected evidence for rewriting in a wide variety of textual contexts, but Zahn's is the first book to map manuscripts and translations of biblical books, so-called 'parabiblical' compositions, and the sectarian literature from Qumran in relation to one another. She introduces a new, adaptable set of terms for talking about rewriting, using the idea of genre as a tool to compare and contrast different cases. Although rewriting has generally been understood as a vehicle for biblical interpretation, Zahn moves beyond that framework to demonstrate that rewriting was a pervasive textual strategy in the Second Temple period. Her book contributes to a powerful new model of early Jewish textuality, illuminating the rich and diverse culture out of which both rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity eventually emerged.

Although Latinos are now the largest non-majority group in the United States, existing research on white attitudes toward Latinos has focused almost exclusively on attitudes toward immigration. This book changes that. It argues that such accounts fundamentally underestimate the political power of whites' animus toward Latinos and thus miss how conflict extends well beyond immigration to issues such as voting rights, criminal punishment, policing, and which candidates to support. Providing historical and cultural context and drawing on rich survey and experimental evidence, the authors show that Latino racism-ethnicism is a coherent belief system about Latinos that is conceptually and empirically distinct from other forms of out-group hostility, and from partisanship and ideology. Moreover, animus toward Latinos has become a powerful force in contemporary American politics, shaping white public opinion in elections and across a number of important issue areas - and resulting in policies that harm Latinos disproportionately.
