Depictions of mythical beings appear in many different forms of art world-wide, including rock art of various ages. In this paper we explore a particular type of imagery, back-to-back figures, consisting of two human-like figures or animals of the same species next to each other and facing in opposite directions. Some human-like doubles were joined at the back rather than side-by-side, but also face opposite directions. In this paper, we report on new research on rock art, bark paintings and recent paintings on paper and chart a 9000-year history of making aesthetically, symbolically and spiritually powerful back-to-back figures in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia.

We develop the first nonparametric significance test for regression models with classical measurement error in the regressors. In particular, a Cramér-von Mises test and a Kolmogorov–Smirnov test for the null hypothesis $E\left [Y|X^{*},Z^{*}\right ]=E\left [Y|X^{*}\right ]$ are proposed when only noisy measurements of $X^{*}$ and $Z^{*}$ are available. The asymptotic null distributions of the test statistics are derived, and a bootstrap method is implemented to obtain the critical values. Despite the test statistics being constructed using deconvolution estimators, we show that the test can detect a sequence of local alternatives converging to the null at the $\sqrt {n}$ -rate. We also highlight the finite sample performance of the test through a Monte Carlo study.

In this paper, we derive the asymptotic properties of the density-weighted average derivative estimator when a regressor is contaminated with classical measurement error and the density of this error must be estimated. Average derivatives of conditional mean functions are used extensively in economics and statistics, most notably in semiparametric index models. As well as ordinary smooth measurement error, we provide results for supersmooth error distributions. This is a particularly important class of error distribution as it includes the Gaussian density. We show that under either type of measurement error, despite using nonparametric deconvolution techniques and an estimated error characteristic function, we are able to achieve a $\sqrt {n}$ -rate of convergence for the average derivative estimator. Interestingly, if the measurement error density is symmetric, the asymptotic variance of the average derivative estimator is the same irrespective of whether the error density is estimated or not. The promising finite sample performance of the estimator is shown through a Monte Carlo simulation.

This paper considers specification testing for regression models with errors-in-variables and proposes a test statistic comparing the distance between the parametric and nonparametric fits based on deconvolution techniques. In contrast to the methods proposed by Hall and Ma (2007, Annals of Statistics, 35, 2620–2638) and Song (2008, Journal of Multivariate Analysis, 99, 2406–2443), our test allows general nonlinear regression models and possesses complementary local power properties. We establish the asymptotic properties of our test statistic for the ordinary and supersmooth measurement error densities. Simulation results endorse our theoretical findings: our test has advantages in detecting high-frequency alternatives and dominates the existing tests under certain specifications.

This paper explores the complex story of a particular style of rock art in western Arnhem Land known as ‘Painted Hands’. Using new evidence from recent fieldwork, we present a definition for their style, distribution and place in the stylistic chronologies of this region. We argue these motifs played an important cultural role in Aboriginal society during the period of European settlement in the region. We explore the complex messages embedded in the design features of the Painted Hands, arguing that they are more than simply hand stencils or markers of individuality. We suggest that these figures represent stylized and intensely encoded motifs with the power to communicate a high level of personal, clan and ceremonial identity at a time when all aspects of Aboriginal cultural identity were under threat.

This paper is an empirical and theoretical analysis of buggery charges brought against men in New South Wales in the period 1788—1838. Drawing on a previously unexamined archive, it shows that an irregular pattern of charges in the first forty years of colonization was displaced by a dramatic increase in buggery charges in the period 1828–1838, and a move towards charging accused persons capitally; that the genesis of most complaints was community, rather than official, surveillance; and that throughout the entire period witnesses were far from circumspect in their evidence of unspeakable acts. The paper then argues that the upswing in charges post-1828 was only partly related to the introduction of the Offences Against the Person Act 1828 and its lower evidentiary threshold for proof of buggery. More important, it suggests, was the acute moralism of NSW society in the 1820s and 1830s, generated in part by John Thomas Bigge's 1822 Report into the State of the Colony of New South Wales. The move towards capital charges, however, does appear to bear some relationship to the changes in the Offences Act. The final part of the paper connects social anxiety over buggery to the 1837–38 Molesworth Inquiry into Transportation and the eventual cessation of convict transportation to NSW in 1840.

Molecular imprinting is the process by which molecules are imprinted into the matrix of a material through non-covalent bonding, including hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions. In this study hydrogels were imprinted with glaucoma medication with the purpose of creating a reusable ocular drug delivery device with reversible binding sites. The material was synthesized and tested with UV-Vis spectroscopy to determine the concentration of the released drug after twelve hours in distilled water. Modifications were made to the polymer to explore methods required for the proper delivery of the drug over an adequate period of time.
