There is a growing evidence that our Sun was born in a rich cluster that also contained massive stars. Therefore, the study of high-mass star-forming regions is key to understand our chemical heritage. In fact, molecules found in comets, in other pristine Solar System bodies and in protoplanetary disks, are enriched in 15N, because they show a lower 14N/15N ratio (100-150) with respect to the value representative of the Proto-Solar Nebula (PSN, 441 ± 6), but the reasons of this enrichment cannot be explained by current chemical models. Moreover, the 14N/15N ratio is important because from it we can learn more about the stellar nucleosynthesis processes that produces both the elements. In this sense observations of star-forming regions are useful to constrain Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models.

Formaldehyde (H2CO) and its deuterated forms can be produced both in the gas phase and on grain surfaces. However, the relative importance of these two chemical pathways is unclear. Our recent single dish observation of formaldehyde and its deuterated species suggests that they form mostly on grain surfaces although some gas-phase contribution is expected at the warm HMPO stage. Since the single dish beam is larger, and since these high-mass star-forming regions are clustered and complex, it is however unclear whether the emission arises from the protostellar sources or from starless/pre-stellar cores associated with them. Therefore, interferometric observations are needed to separate the emission originating from the small and dense cores, to disentangle their formation routes and then being able to use them as powerful diagnostic tools of the physical and chemical properties of high-mass star forming regions.

Star formation in the Galactic disc is primarily controlled by gravity, turbulence, and magnetic fields. It is not clear that this also applies to star formation near the Galactic Centre. Here we determine the turbulence and star formation in the CMZ cloud G0.253+0.016. Using maps of 3 mm dust emission and HNCO intensity-weighted velocity obtained with ALMA, we measure the volume-density variance σρ /ρ 0=1.3±0.5 and turbulent Mach number $\mathcal{M}$ = 11±3. Combining these with turbulence simulations to constrain the plasma β = 0.34±0.35, we reconstruct the turbulence driving parameter b=0.22±0.12 in G0.253+0.016. This low value of b indicates solenoidal (divergence-free) driving of the turbulence in G0.253+0.016. By contrast, typical clouds in the Milky Way disc and spiral arms have a significant compressive (curl-free) driving component (b > 0.4). We speculate that shear causes the solenoidal driving in G0.253+0.016 and show that this may reduce the star formation rate by a factor of 7 compared to nearby clouds.

For over a decade, the structure of the inner “hole” in the transition disk around TW Hydrae has been a subject of debate. To probe the innermost regions of the protoplanetary disk, observations at the highest possible spatial resolution are required. We present new interferometric data of TW Hya from near-infrared to millimeter wavelengths. We confront existing models of the disk structure with the complete data set and develop a new, detailed radiative-transfer model. This model is characterized by: 1) a spatial separation of the largest grains from the small disk grains; and 2) a smooth inner rim structure, rather than a sharp disk edge.

We present preliminary results of a detailed study of the accretion, stellar, and wind properties of transitional disks (TDs) carried out with the X-Shooter spectrograph. Combining new and archival spectra, we collected a sample of more than 20 TDs from different nearby star-forming regions. Our sample includes objects with both small (<5-15 AU) and large (>20–30 AU) known inner hole size from the literature (either from mm-observations or IR SED fitting). We check their stellar parameters (Teff, L*, AV, M*) and derive their accretion properties (Lacc, Ṁacc) in a self-consistent way, which makes use of the wide wavelength coverage of X-Shooter, and study their wind properties by mean of different forbidden emission lines analysis.

We summarize some of the results obtained from Herschel surveys of nearby star forming regions and the Galactic plane. We show that in the nearby star forming regions the starless core spatial surface density distribution is very similar to that of the young stellar objects. This, taken together with the similarity between the core mass function and the initial mass function for stars and the relationship between the amount of dense gas and star formation rate, suggest that the cloud fragmentation process defines the global outcome of star formation. This “simple” view of star formation may not hold on all scales. In particular dynamical interactions are expected to become important at the conditions required to form young massive clusters. We describe the successes of a simple criterion to identify young massive cluster precursors in our Galaxy based on (sub-)millimeter wide area surveys. We further show that in the location of our Galaxy where the best candidate for a precursor of a young massive cluster is found, the “simple” scaling relationship between dense gas and star formation rate appear to break down. We suggest that in regions where the conditions approach those of the central molecular zone of our Galaxy it may be necessary to revise the scaling laws for star formation.

Submillimeter dust continuum emission traces high molecular column densities and, thus, dense cloud regions in which new stars are forming. Surveys of the Galactic plane in such emission have the potential of delivering an unbiased view of high-mass star formation throughout the Milky Way. The location of the APEX telescope on the Chajnantor plateau in Chile is ideally suited for mapping the inner Galaxy. ATLASGAL, The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy at 870 μm, is a survey of the Galactic plane using the Large APEX Bolometer Camera (LABOCA), in the Galactic longitude and latitude ranges of  ±60 and  ±1.5°, respectively. This survey is providing an unbiased sample of cold dusty clumps in the Galaxy at submillimeter wavelength and a variety of molecular line follow-up observations have been started to characterize the physical and chemical conditions in the newly found clumps. Here, first results from this survey and its follow-up programs are described.

ALMA has been designed and is being built to deliver transformational science in the millimeter and submillimeter regime for many years to come. We briefly describe the project status and timeline. We discuss which niches in millimeter/ submillimeter astronomy will remain open for a possible facility in Antarctica.

About 20% of the high mass O-type stars in the Galaxy are found outside stellar clusters and associations. In the solar neighbourhood this fraction amounts to 43 O-type stars. In the framework of high-mass star formation, we search for the origins of these stars. We aim at separating the O-type field stars from runaway O-type stars, where the former does not betray any indication of past dynamical interactions resulting in their present field location. We specifically search for the presence of stellar clusters, but also evaluate spatial velocities, distance from Galactic plane, locations in the Galaxy with respect to young stellar clusters. Among our sample of 43, we find that 5 stars are in fact observed in the K-band to be members of previously unnoticed small clusters. On the other hand it is plausible that nearly half the sample (22 objects) could have undergone a dynamical ejection from a young cluster. Based on the current available data, ${\sim }4%$ of the Galactic O-type stars cannot be associated with a stellar cluster. Finally by assuming that stars form in clusters with a power law in membership number with index −1.7 down to “clusters” consisting of single stars, we calculate the expected statistics regarding isolated O stars and O stars in OB-associations. We conclude that the results of the calculations are consistent with the observed statistics of O-type stars.

We present the preliminary results of a programme aimed at defining a low-resolution near-infrared spectral classification scheme for faint M, L, and T-dwarfs. The method is based on the global shape of R˜100 complete near-infrared spectra from 0.8 to 2.4μm as obtained through a high-throughput prism-based optical element, the Amici device, mounted inside the NICS instrument at the TNG 3.5m telescope (Baffa et al. 2001; Oliva 2000). The aim of our project is to provide an efficient classification scheme based on very low-resolution near infrared spectroscopy, which can be carried on at a 4m-class telescope. The results for the L-type dwarfs have already been presented in Testi et al. (2001), sample spectra for the M and T-dwarfs range are shown in Figure 1. A preliminary application of the method to the classification of young embedded brown-dwarf candidates has been successfully attempted by Testi et al. (2002) and Natta et al. (2002). The method is shown to be accurate and competitive: the high system throughput coupled with the possibility of obtaining in a “single shot” the complete spectrum of the objects make the NICS/TNG system more efficient than existing large telescopes.
