Stellar bars drive the galaxy secular evolution. While rotating around the galaxy centre with a given angular frequency, the bar pattern speed, they sweep material and modify the galaxy structure. In the LCDM model, bars are expected to slow down by exchanging angular momentum with the other omponents and/or through dynamical friction exerted by the dark matter halo. The only direct method to derive the bar pattern speed, the Tremaine-Weinberg method, revealed that real bars rotate fast, stressing a tension between the observations, conducted to date in the local universe, and the LCDM model. Measuring the bar pattern speed to bars up to z∼1-2 will reveal if the expected bar evolutionary path is actually taking place and/or to confirm if the dark matter is able to exert friction. Using high resolution N-body simulations we tested the applicability of the Tremaine-Weinberg method to deep spectroscopy of the NIRSpec@JWST for a sample of bars at z∼1-2. Our analysis can be used to prepare an observational proposal to get dedicated data.

We present the stellar populations properties of the interacting spiral NGC 5719, which is known to host two cospatial counter-rotating stellar discs.

The radial profiles of the Hβ, Mg, and Fe line-strength indices are presented for a sample of eight spiral galaxies with a low surface-brightness stellar disc and a bulge. The correlations between the central values of the line-strength indices and velocity dispersion are consistent to those known for early-type galaxies and bulges of high surface-brightness galaxies. The age, metallicity, and α/Fe enhancement of the stellar populations in the bulge-dominated region are obtained using stellar population models with variable element abundance ratios. Almost all the sample bulges are characterized by a young stellar population, on-going star formation, and a solar α/Fe enhancement. Their metallicity spans from high to sub-solar values. No significant gradient in age and α/Fe enhancement is measured, whereas only in a few cases a negative metallicity gradient is found. These properties suggest that a pure dissipative collapse is not able to explain formation of all the sample bulges and that other phenomena, like mergers or acquisition events, need to be invoked. Such a picture is also supported by the lack of a correlation between the central value and gradient of the metallicity in bulges with very low metallicity. The stellar populations of the bulges hosted by low surface-brightness discs share many properties with those of high surface-brightness galaxies. Therefore, they are likely to have common formation scenarios and evolution histories. A strong interplay between bulges and discs is ruled out by the fact that in spite of being hosted by discs with extremely different properties, the bulges of low and high surface-brightness discs are remarkably similar.

Polistes dominulus are social wasps which are the host of the strepsipteran endoparasite Xenos vesparum. In the hibernating phase, unparasitized and parasitized wasps leave natal nests and aggregate together in sheltered quarters. In aggregations, wasps are socially active, and some individuals perform helping behaviour. Here we investigated if castrated parasitized wasps perform worker tasks in mixed aggregations. Moreover, by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, we examined the cuticular hydrocarbons of unparasitized and parasitized wasps to evaluate if the infection alters the composition of cuticular waxes that are recognition cues in social insects. In clusters, infected females do not perform helping behaviour and they are less active than unparasitized wasps. Cuticular hydrocarbons are slightly differentiated between unparasitized and parasitized wasps but, generally, unparasitized wasps are more similar to wasps infected by Xenos females compared to wasps infected by Xenos males. Wasps infected by Xenos males do not usually survive the winter. This chemical similarity is probably a consequence of the similar physiological condition of unparasitized and female-affected Polistes wasps. At this stage, it is difficult to affirm whether these modifications are a true parasite manipulation or a consequence of infection.

The SuperMACHO project has discovered light echoes from 3 ancient SNe in the LMC. These SNRs are three of the six youngest in the LMC, and are classified as likely SN Ia based on X-ray data.

Dislocation dynamics in Ni3AI intermetallic single crystals has been studied by mechanical spectroscopy between 300 and 700 K. It has been found that in the anomaly domain of the flow stress, which is characteristic of this material, the mechanical loss of predeformed specimens is strongly dependent on strain amplitude, predeformation level, annealing temperature and time. The results can be interpreted as a combination of two phenomena which simultaneously occur as temperature is increased from 300 K to about 500 K: exhaustion of the mobile dislocation segments (superkinks) and pinning of the screw dislocation segments via cross-slip from the (111) onto the (010) planes.
