Skeletal muscle atrophy causes decreased physical activity and increased risk of metabolic diseases. We investigated the effects of oleamide (cis-9,10-octadecanamide) treatment on skeletal muscle health. The plasma concentration of endogenous oleamide was approximately 30 nm in male ddY mice under normal physiological conditions. When the stable isotope-labelled oleamide was orally administered to male ddY mice (50 mg/kg), the plasma concentration of exogenous oleamide reached approximately 170 nm after 1 h. Male ddY mice were housed in small cages (one-sixth of normal size) to enforce sedentary behaviour and orally administered oleamide (50 mg/kg per d) for 4 weeks. Housing in small cages decreased tibialis anterior (TA) muscle mass and the cross-sectional area of the myofibres in TA muscle. Dietary oleamide alleviated the decreases in TA muscle and resulted in plasma oleamide concentration of approximately 120 nm in mice housed in small cages. Housing in small cages had no influence on the phosphorylation levels of Akt serine/threonine kinase (Akt), mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) and ribosomal protein S6 kinase (p70S6K) in TA muscle; nevertheless, oleamide increased the phosphorylation levels of the proteins. Housing in small cages increased the expression of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3)-II and sequestosome 1 (p62), but not LC3-I, in TA muscle, and oleamide reduced LC3-I, LC3-II and p62 expression levels. In C2C12 myotubes, oleamide increased myotube diameter at ≥100 nm. Furthermore, the mTOR inhibitor, Torin 1, suppressed oleamide-induced increases in myotube diameter and protein synthesis. These results indicate that dietary oleamide rescued TA muscle atrophy in mice housed in small cages, possibly by activating the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway and restoring autophagy flux.

Current evidence suggests that the aetiology of congenital gastrointestinal (GI) tract atresia is multifactorial, and not based solely on genetic factors. However, there are no established modifiable risk factors for congenital GI tract atresia. We used data from a Japanese nationwide birth cohort study launched in 2011, and examined whether fish consumption in early pregnancy was associated with congenital GI tract atresia. We analysed data of 89 495 women (mean age at delivery=31·2 years) who delivered singleton live births without chromosomal anomalies. Based on the results of the FFQ, we estimated the daily intake of fish and n-3 PUFA consumption in early pregnancy. We defined a composite outcome (oesophageal atresia, duodenal atresia, jejunoileal atresia and/or anorectal malformation) as congenital GI tract atresia. In this population, median fish intake was 31·9 g/d, and seventy-four cases of congenital GI tract atresia were identified. Fish consumption in early pregnancy was inversely associated with the composite outcome (multivariable-adjusted OR for the high v. low consumption category=0·5, 95 % CI 0·3, 1·0). For all the specific types of atresia, decreased OR were observed in the high consumption category, although not statistically significant. Reduced atresia occurrence was observed even beyond the US Food and Drug Administration’s recommended consumption of no more than 340 g/week. Also, n-3 PUFA-rich fish and n-3 PUFA consumptions tended to be inversely associated with atresia. Fish consumption in early pregnancy may be a preventive factor for congenital GI tract atresia.

Here, we describe a new microsporidium Percutemincola moriokae gen. nov., sp. nov., which was discovered in the intestinal and hypodermal cells of a wild strain of the nematode Oscheius tipulae that inhabits in the soil of Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. The spores of Pe. moriokae had an average size of 1.0 × 3.8 µm and 1.3 × 3.2 µm in the intestine and hypodermis, respectively, and electron microscopy revealed that they exhibited distinguishing features with morphological diversity in the hypodermis. Isolated spores were able to infect a reference strain of O. tipulae (CEW1) through horizontal transmission but not the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Upon infection, the spores were first observed in the hypodermis and then in the intestine the following day, suggesting a unique infectious route among nematode-infective microsporidia. Molecular phylogenetic analysis grouped this new species with the recently identified nematode-infective parasites Enteropsectra and Pancytospora forming a monophyletic sister clade to Orthosomella in clade IV, which also includes human pathogens such as Enterocytozoon and Vittaforma. We believe that this newly discovered species and its host could have application as a new model in microsporidia–nematode association studies.

Snowdrifting processes and the wind-velocity profiles around a collector and a blower snow fence were investigated in a cold wind tunnel. The purpose was to ascertain the effect of wind direction on drift control by snow fences. Three different cases were studied for both types of snow fence, and the resultant snowdrifts were compared. In the first case, the snow fence was perpendicular to the wind direction. In the second and third cases, it was tilted by 30° and 45°. When the collector snow fence was tilted, the amounts of snowdrift were much less than when the fence was perpendicular to the wind direction, because the area with low wind velocity was reduced to half behind the tilted fence. On the other hand, the blowing effect of the blower snow fence increased when it was set up at an angle to the wind direction. It is necessary to investigate the position where the blown snow is deposited by the tilted blower snow fence.

Laboratory experiments were undertaken to investigate the allelopathic activity of Mexican sunflower in soil as well as to determine the effect of several soil factors on activity. There was a decrease in shoot and root growth of the test plant species when grown in soil previously planted with Mexican sunflower. However, seed germination was not affected. Soil-water separated from the same soil also inhibited shoot and root growth. A water extract from Mexican sunflower leaves applied to soil also reduced shoot and root growth, but the degree of inhibition varied among test plant species. Incorporation of dry Mexican sunflower leaves into soil at the rate of 1 and 2% (w/w) inhibited the growth of rice seedlings. The phytotoxic activity of incorporated leaf residue diminished 4 wk after treatment of soil. The inhibitory effect of a leaf water extract in nonautoclaved soil was less than in autoclaved soil and the phytotoxic effect to rice seedling grown in autoclaved soil was less than in autoclaved sand. It is suggested that the decrease in allelopathic activity of Mexican sunflower extract and its residue in soil is due to the action of soil microorganisms and the soil adsorption of the active components.

We formulate and conduct the time-integration of time evolution equation for the giant molecular cloud mass function (GMCMF) including the cloud-cloud collision (CCC) effect. Our results show that the CCC effect is only limited in the massive-end of the GMCMF and indicate that future high resolution and sensitivity radio observations may constrain giant molecular cloud (GMC) timescales by observing the GMCMF slope in the lower mass regime.

We investigated morphological differences in specimens of the arcid bivalve Scapharca kagoshimensis collected from two sites differing in turbidity in the inner part of Ariake Bay. First, we confirmed if the specimens collected from the two sites were the same species by comparing the sequences of their nuclear 18S ribosomal DNA (18S rDNA) and cytchrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), since the closely related species S. inequivalvis could be distributed in one site. The results of DNA analyses showed that specimens from both sites belonged to the same species. Shell morphology, gill and posterior adductor muscle size did not differ between the two populations. However, the size of the labial palp was significantly larger in bivalves living in an area of high turbidity compared with those living in an area with low turbidity. This difference could not simply be attributed to differences in meat content because the total weight of the soft body parts did not differ between the two populations. The labial palp is an organ functioning in preingestive particle selection. Hence, the large palps would presumably be a response to high turbidity conditions in which the need for particle processes increases. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating palp size flexibility in arcid bivalves, and such flexibility could be a factor enabling S. kagoshimensis to successfully exploit a wide area of shallow water in the inner part of Ariake Bay.

In general, twins have delayed language development early in childhood compared with singletons. The purpose of this study was to clarify the overall linguistic features of twins. A Japanese version of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA) was administered in 24 twin pairs (aged 3 to 4 years) at their own homes. The overall language abilities of the twins were in the normal range (based on ITPA normative data: mean scale score 36.0 ± 6.0 points), and for the ITPA subtests only, Auditory Reception fell within the range of language disorder (mean scale score 24.9 ± 5.1 points). The findings suggest that in 3- to 4-year-old Japanese twins, overall language abilities are not delayed. However, there may be specific difficulties with auditory reception skills.

The definition and nature of twin language has been a focus of recent studies concerned with the phenomenon. There has been a call for a tighter definition and understanding of the meaning of twin language (Thorpe et al., 2001). This article sought to identify social factors associated with the parent report of twin language and thus provide further understanding of the phenomenon. Data from 583 mothers of twins aged 25 to 59 months were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. Factors included in the modeling of parent-report twin language included social experience factors such as presence of siblings, attendance at preschool education and reports of nonverbal play. It was found that twin pairs who didn't have an older sibling, who showed frequent nonverbal play and who didn't attend preschool were more likely to have a twin language. Moreover, in the group not having an older sibling, the influence of whether twins attended preschool or not was strong and the odds ratio was 0.589 (95% confidence intervals 0.360–0.963). The findings suggest that social experience factors are important predictors of the parent reporting of twin language.

We describe subject recruitment and research results from the Osaka University Aged Twin Registry (OUATR). The research focus of OUATR is the genetic and environmental contributions to physical-cognitive-mental aging which we examined in Japanese twins in later adulthood. Within this large-scale registry (12,000 pairs) of oriental twins born between 1900 and 1935, approximately 10% of participants are MZ twins reared apart from early childhood. Two hundred and fifty pairs have had comprehensive medical examinations, including various blood chemical panels, lymphocyte subtests, WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale), and urine analysis. The future foci of this study are primarily on longevity, decline of cognitive functions with aging, bio-physiological functions, lifestyle and behavior genetics, and psycho-spiritual functions.

Plasmodium falciparum has for some time been developing resistance against known anti-malarial drugs, and therefore a new drug is urgently needed. Selenium (Se), an essential trace element, in the form of inorganic Se, selenite (SeO32−), has been reported to have an anti-plasmodial effect, but its mechanism is still unclear. In the present study, we evaluated the anti-plasmodial effect of several Se compounds against P. falciparum in vitro. The anti-plasmodial effect of several Se compounds was analysed and their apoptosis-inducing activity was evaluated by morphological observation, DNA fragmentation assay and mitochondrial function analysis. SeO32−, methylseleninic acid, selenomethionine and selenocystine have anti-plasmodial effects with 50% inhibition concentration at 9, 10, 45, and 65 μm, respectively, while selenate and methylselenocysteine up to 100 μm have no effect on parasite growth. The effective Se compounds caused the parasites to become shrunken and pyknotic and significantly increased mitochondrial damage against P. falciparum compared to the untreated control. In conclusion, SeO32−, methylseleninic acid, selenomethionine and selenocystine have anti-plasmodial activities that induce apoptosis-like cell death in P. falciparum, and the anti-plasmodial effects of Se seem to be based on its chemical forms. The apoptosis-like cell-death mechanism in P. falciparum can be beneficial to respond to the growing problem of drug resistance.

The operation of nuclear fuel reprocessing plants generates a radioactive effluent containing nitrate salts as the major constituent. This waste must be disposed of safely and economically, and to achieve this aim the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is developing a cement based encapsulation method to immobilise this waste. Non-radioactive development work has been performed at both small and large-scale (up to 200 litres) to investigate the optimum cement formulation. The results from these studies demonstrate that nitrate waste that has been concentrated by evaporation of the water to a predetermined level can be successfully encapsulated up to a waste loading corresponding to 50 wt% sodium nitrate. It has been identified that high concentrations of bicarbonate ions in the effluent can have a detrimental effect on the strength of the cement encapsulated waste; however, provided this concentration is controlled, successful encapsulation of the effluent is still achieved.

Using the recursion-transfer-matrix (RTM) method, which is a powerful method to obtain accurate scattering waves, combined with non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method, we study the transport properties through single molecules sandwiched between electrodes with finite bias voltages. Especially, we investigate the effects of atomic-scale contacts on the I-V characteristics. We find strong nonlinear behaviors appear in the I-V characteristics when the atomic-scale contact at one electrode is not formed well.

We a pplied ellipsometric porosimetry and variable-energy positron annihilation spectroscopy to the pore characterization of spin-on-glass silicon-oxide-backboned porous thin films with different relative dielectric constants between 2.3 and 3.2. It was found that the relative dielectric constant decreases linearly with increasing open porosity deduced by ellipsometric porosimetry. Comparison of the open porosity with the average pore size deduced by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy suggested that mesopores less contribute to open porosity and are not so effective in decreasing film relative dielectric constant in comparison with micropores.

Application of porous silicon oxide thin films to nanotechnology is under intensive investigation. Introducing a large amount of nano pores into a silicon oxide matrix is important to develop low-k dielectrics for future ultra-large-scale integrated circuits (ULSI). In this work, we applied variable-energy positron annihilation to the characterization of porous silicon oxide thin films fabricated on silicon wafers by sputtering and spincoating. It was found that the sputtered film has higher open pore connectivity than that of the spincoated low-k film.

Only eight cases of bilateral middle-ear squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) have been reported to date. We present the case of a 75-year-old male with bilateral middle-ear SCC and review the previously reported cases. The patient was diagnosed as having moderately-differentiated SCC in the left middle ear in February 1995 and well-differentiated SCC in the right middle ear in September 1997. He initially received radiation therapy with 60Co pendulum (64 Gy) in the left ear and was subsequently treated by Liniac irradiation (50 Gy) in the right ear. He has now been followed up at our ENT clinic for 29 months without vertigo or facial nerve palsy since the second radiation therapy. Although he has a residual tumour in the right middle ear invading the middle cranial fossa dura, no sign of recurrence has been detected in the left ear.
