A new microsporidian disease of cultured rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss has recently been confirmed in Japan, and the causative species was tentatively designated as Microsporidium sp. RBT-2021. Involvement of common prawn Palaemon paucidens in its transmission was suggested based on the previous feeding trials, although the microsporidian infection in P. paucidens was not confirmed. In this study, P. paucidens in Lake Biwa, Japan was investigated for microsporidian infection and 4 types of spores (types 1–4) were newly found. The nucleotide sequence of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene was identical between type 1 and Microsporidium sp. RBT-2021, indicating they are conspecific. However, intriguingly, the spore morphology and the mode of development in fish and prawn were strikingly different. Morphological observations revealed type 1 in the prawn possesses characteristics of the genus Inodosporus Overstreet and Weidner, 1974, while Microsporidium sp. RBT-2021 in the trout exhibited the characteristics of the genus Kabatana Lom, Dyková and Tonguthai, 2000. In the phylogeny, type 1 was placed within a clade comprising Kabatana spp. and Inodosporus octosporus. Based on the morphological and molecular analyses, we describe Microsporidium sp. RBT-2021 as Inodosporus fujiokai n. sp. Together with the success of the previous prawn-feeding trials, this study strongly suggests I. fujiokai n. sp. has a multi-host life cycle utilizing fish and crustacean hosts and different modes of development in each host. Such polymorphic life cycle has barely been known among fish microsporidians. This study also suggests that the genus Kabatana is a junior synonym of the genus Inodosporus.

We report the long-term results of percutaneous transluminal coronary balloon angioplasty for early appearing localised stenosis of the left anterior descending artery caused by Kawasaki disease in two 2-year-olds. One patient had 50% restenosis and newly appearing aneurysm at 21-year-old, and the other had no restenosis at 16-year-old. They had no symptoms or cardiac events for 20 years. It is useful in the early localised stenosis without aneurysm.

A new method for continuous monitoring of the concentration of 131I-labelled iodoantipy rine during an autoradiographic local cerebral blood flow (LCBF) experiment is described. During infusion of iodoantipy rine, radioactivity in an external femoral arteriovenous loop is monitored by a scintillation detector. Data is collected with a variable time base, and the arterial activity curve displayed visually in its entirety. The main advantage of this method is that there is no blood loss. It will therefore be of particular importance in dual-label autoradiography. This method can also be used for other gamma-emitting blood flow tracers, e.g. 123I-iodoantipyrine.

A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a key technology to meet future emission standards of particulate matters (PM), mainly soot. It is generally consists of a wall-flow type filter positioned in the exhaust stream of a diesel vehicle. It is difficult to simulate the thermal flow in DPF, because we need to consider the soot deposition and combustion in the complex geometry of filter wall. In our previous study, we proposed an approach for the conjugate simulation of gas-solid flow. That is, the gas phase was simulated by the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), coupled with the equation of heat conduction inside the solid filter substrate. However, its numerical procedure was slightly complex. In this study, to reduce numerical costs, we have tested a new boundary condition with chemical equilibrium in soot combustion at the surface of filter substrate. Based on the soot oxidation rate with catalysts evaluated in experiments, the lattice Boltzmann simulation of soot combustion in the catalyzed DPF is firstly presented to consider the process in the after-treatment of diesel exhaust gas. The heat and mass transfer is shown to discuss the effect of catalysts.

We have investigated the atomistic structure of radiation-induced defects in CeO2 formed under 200 keV electron irradiation. Dislocation loops on {111} habit planes are observed, and they grow accompanying strong strain-field. Atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) observations with high angle annular dark-field (HAADF) and annular bright-field (ABF) imaging techniques showed that no additional Ce layers are inserted at the position of the dislocation loop, and that strong distortion and expansion is induced around the dislocation loops. These results are discussed that dislocation loops formed under electron irradiation are non-stoichiometric defects consist of oxygen interstitials.

This paper presents an overlapping generations model with technology choice and imperfect financial markets, and examines the evolution of the income distribution in economic development. The model shows that improvements in financial infrastructure facilitate economic development both by raising the aggregate capital–labor ratio and by causing a technological shift to more capital-intensive technologies. Although a higher capital–labor ratio under a given technology reduces inequality, a technological shift can lead to a concentration of economic rents among a smaller number of agents. We derive the condition under which an improvement in financial infrastructure actually decreases the average utility of agents.

We propose more practical method to realize the superfocusing modes based on waveguide structures, and present a numerical analysis these structures using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. For metallic wedged structure coupled to dielectric waveguides, we investigate a method of controlling superfocusing by changing the phase of waveguide modes.

We have investigated structural changes of amorphous borosilicon carbonitride materials with atomic ratios of B/Si/C of 2/3/6 and 4/3/6 calcined at several temperatures. The boron K-edge x-ray absorption spectra showed that the structures of both hexagonal boron nitride ([BN3] unit) with nitrogen-void defects ([BN2] and [BN1] units) and boron oxide existed in the samples, and the relative peak intensity due to the [BN3] unit became stronger by increasing the calcined temperature. It is thought that the well-developed B–N chain and the borosilicate glass coating lead to the high resistance to oxidation at high temperature. X-ray diffraction and infrared measurements followed the x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy findings.

Polycrystalline diamond films, single crystal bulk diamonds, and diamond powder were treated in microwave plasma of hydrogen at 1.6 torr under a negative direct-current bias of −150 to −300 V without metal catalyst. It was found that fibrous structures, uniformly elongated along the direction normal to the specimen surface, were formed on the diamond surfaces. Similar experiments for glasslike carbon resulted in conical structures with frizzy fibers at the tops. Transmission electron microscopy measurements indicated that the fibers formed on diamond consisted of randomly oriented diamond nanocrystals with diameters of less than 10 nm, while the conical structures formed on glasslike carbon consisted of graphite nanocrystals. Field emission measurements of the fibrous specimens exhibited better emission efficiency than untreated ones. The field emission electron microscopy of the fibrous glasslike carbon showed a presence of discrete electron emission sites at a density of approximately 10,000 sites/cm2.

In this paper we shall develop the scattering theory introduced by Lax and Phillips [5] for the following general wave equation; where Ω is an exterior domain Rn(n ≥ 3) with the smooth boundary δΩ and B is either a Dirichlet boundary condition or of the form Bu = Vi(x)aij(x)δju+σ(x)u with the unit outer normal vector v(x) = (v1 , … , vn) at x ∈ δ Ω. The precise assumptions on α(x), aij(x),q(x), σ(x) are denoted below. In this paper we shall study elastic waves in two isotropic media with different densities and Lamè’s constants. In seismology elastic waves are studied when the border of two media is a hyperplane, however there are no results on elastic waves in the non-flat border case. First in Section 1 we shall show an existence theorem of the solutions of an initial boundary value problem which is satisfied by the displacements of two media. Next we shall discuss about propagation of singularities of the solutions, for Hörmander and Lax-Nirenberg showed that an appearance of propagation of singularities is similar to one of propagation of waves.
