Cyclone–anticyclone asymmetry in spontaneous gravity wave radiation from a co-rotating vortex pair is investigated in an $f$-plane shallow water system. The far field of gravity waves is derived analytically by analogy with the theory of aeroacoustic sound wave radiation (Lighthill theory). In the derived form, the Earth’s rotation affects not only the propagation of gravity waves but also their source. While the results correspond to the theory of vortex sound in the limit of $f\rightarrow 0$, there is an asymmetry in gravity wave radiation between cyclone pairs and anticyclone pairs for finite values of $f$. Anticyclone pairs radiate gravity waves more intensely than cyclone pairs due to the effect of the Earth’s rotation. In addition, there is a local maximum of intensity of gravity waves from anticyclone pairs at an intermediate $f$. To verify the analytical solution, a numerical simulation is also performed with a newly developed spectral method in an unbounded domain. The novelty of this method is the absence of wave reflection at the boundary due to a conformal mapping and a pseudo-hyperviscosity that acts like a sponge layer in the far field of waves. The numerical results are in excellent agreement with the analytical results even for finite values of $f$ for both cyclone pairs and anticyclone pairs.

The electronic band structures of monolayer molybdenum dichalcogenides, MoS2, MoSe2, and MoTe2 under either uniaxial or biaxial strain are calculated using first-principles calculation with the GW method. The imposed uniaxial strain is in the zigzag direction in the honeycomb lattice whereas the imposed biaxial strain is in the zigzag and armchair directions. It is found that the band gaps of these dichalcogenides almost linearly increase with the decrease of the magnitude of compressive strain, reach their maxima at some compressive strain, and then decrease almost linearly with the increase of tensile strain. It is also found their maximum band gaps are direct bandgaps.

Forecasting the maize yield of China's Jilin province from 1962 to 2004, with climate conditions and fertilizer as predictors, was investigated using multiple linear regression (MLR) and non-linear artificial neural network (ANN) models. Yield was set to be a function of precipitation from July to August, precipitation in September and the amount of fertilizer used. Fertilizer emerged as the dominant predictor and was non-linearly related to yield in the ANN model. Given the difficulty of acquiring fertilizer data for maize, the current study was also tested using the previous year's yield in the place of fertilizer data. Forecast skill scores computed under both cross-validation and retroactive validation showed ANN models to significantly outperform MLR and persistence (i.e. forecast yield is identical to last year's observed yield). As the data were non-stationary, cross-validation was found to be less reliable than retroactive validation in assessing the forecast skill.

The structures and electronic properties of graphene with defects consisting of one to six atomic vacancies are investigated using first-principles calculation. All of the geometrically possible initial structures of a movacancy or a multivacancy in graphene are equilibrated. The formation energies and electronic band structures for the equilibrated defective structures are calculated. It is suggested non-zero bandgaps may be induced in graphene by introducing some types of monovacancy or multivacancy although further checks regarding supercell size are necessary to ensure the present results.

The Keio Twin Research Center has conducted two longitudinal twin cohort projects and has collected three independent and anonymous twin data sets for studies of phenotypes related to psychological, socio-economic, and mental health factors. The Keio Twin Study has examined adolescent and adult cohorts, with a total of over 2,400 pairs of twins and their parents. DNA samples are available for approximately 600 of these twin pairs. The Tokyo Twin Cohort Project has followed a total of 1,600 twin pairs from infancy to early childhood. The large-scale cross-sectional twin study (CROSS) has collected data from over 4,000 twin pairs, from 3 to 26 years of age, and from two high school twin cohorts containing a total of 1,000 pairs of twins. These data sets of anonymous twin studies have mainly targeted academic performance, attitude, and social environment. The present article introduces the research designs and major findings of our center, such as genetic structures of cognitive abilities, personality traits, and academic performances, developmental effects of genes and environment on attitude, socio-cognitive ability and parenting, genes x environment interaction on attitude and conduct problem, and statistical methodological challenges and so on. We discuss the challenges in conducting twin research in Japan.

Peptidases of parasitic protozoa are currently under intense investigation in order to identify novel virulence factors, drug targets, and vaccine candidates, except in Babesia. Leucine aminopeptidases in protozoa, such as Plasmodium and Leishmania, have been identified to be involved in free amino acid regulation. We report here the molecular and enzymatic characterization, as well as the localization of a leucine aminopeptidase, a member of the M17 cytosolic aminopeptidase family, from B. gibsoni (BgLAP). A functional recombinant BgLAP (rBgLAP) expressed in Escherichia coli efficiently hydrolysed synthetic substrates for aminopeptidase, a leucine substrate. Enzyme activity of the rBgLAP was found to be optimum at pH 8·0 and at 37°C. The substrate profile was slightly different from its homologue in P. falciprum. The activity was also strongly dependent on metal divalent cations, and was inhibited by bestatin, which is a specific inhibitor for metalloprotease. These results indicated that BgLAP played an important role in free amino acid regulation.

A structure called ‘veil’ in Theileria sergenti-, T. buffeli- or T. orientalis-infected bovine erythrocytes was purified from erythrocyte lysates by Percoll density-gradient centrifugation. On electron microscopical examination, the veils consisted of electron-dense material showing a periodicity of striations and were not surrounded by membranes. Analyses of veil proteins by one- and two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that the veils contain haemoglobin and several other basic proteins of molecular weight ranging from 15·5 to 46 kDa. By comparing the protein patterns of the veil with those of purified piroplasms and uninfected bovine erythrocytes, these basic proteins appeared to be of parasite origin. It would appear likely that the veils formed by intra-erythrocytic precipitation of haemoglobin and proteins excreted by the parasites. Differences in veil constituents were found between T. sergenti, T. buffeli and T. orientalis.

Proteins of the piroplasms of Theileria sergenti, T. buffeli and T. orientalis were analysed by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Protein spot patterns of T. buffeli and T. orientalis were identical except for a few minor proteins, whereas spot patterns of two T. sergenti stocks were differentiated from those of T. buffeli and T. orientalis by a characteristic set of proteins including a major protein of molecular weight 33–34 kDa. This result indicates that Japanese T. sergenti can be phenotypically distinguishable from European and Australia Theileria species; T. orientalis and T. buffeli.

In this study, the pn hetero-interface between Zn(O,S,OH)x buffer and Cu(InGa)(SSe)2 (CIGSS) surface layers is discussed in order to achieve the fill factor (FF) over 0.73 and the circuit efficiency of 16 % on aperture area of over 800 cm2. Two resistances, i.e. shunt resistance (Rsh) and series resistance (Rs), in the circuits are employed as a yardstick to evaluate the interface quality. Since there are no realistic yardsticks on the Rs, the difference between Voc and optimum-power voltage (Vop) (i.e. Voc-Vop [V/cell]) is applied as a simple tool to evaluate the Rs. It is emphasized that it is important to reduce the Rs mainly correlated to the buffer deposition process and, as a result, the interface quality. We consider the Rs is dependent on the remaining Zn(OH)2 concentration in the Zn(O,S,OH)x buffer deposited by a chemical-bath deposition (CBD) technique. As an approach to make the Rs minimize and the Rsh maximize simultaneously, adjusting the thickness of a CBD-Zn(O,S,OH)x buffer layer and a non-doped ZnO layer deposited by a metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique has been effective to reduce the remaining Zn(OH)2 concentration. Determining the optimized deposition procedure to achieve the FF over 0.700 consistently, the circuit efficiency of 15.3 % with aperture area of 856 cm2 and the FF of 0.717 has been achieved.

For realizing the proof of mass production capablity or a move toward a GW/a production, 16%-efficiency project has been started setting the target of each parameter as V∝: 0.685 V/cell, FF: 0.735 and Jsc: 31.8mA/cm2. Up to FY2008, the target of each parameter independently has been achieved expect the efficiency. All of our research by adjusting the two resistance (Rsh and Rs) in the monolithically integrated 30cm×30cm-sized circuits. To improve the FF, double buffer structure with CBD-Zn(O,S,OH)x and MOCVD-ZnO is proposed and the thickness is adjusted by optimizing the Rs and the Rsh. As the result, FF of over 0.7 has been achieved for the first time in our CIS R&D since FY 1993.

Common arthropod vectors for trypanosomes are flies, fleas and bugs. This study reports on an unknown trypanosome species isolated from naturally infected Haemaphysalis hystricis ticks, hereby, referred to as Trypanosoma KG1 isolate. The parasite has been successfully cultured in vitro with L929 or HEK 293T cell line as feeder cells. This trypanosome cannot survive in vitro without feeder cells. Following experimental infections of ticks, the trypomastigote-like and the epimastigote-like forms of this trypanosome could be detected by Giemsa-stained smears of the midgut and salivary glands of Ornithodoros moubata ticks which were made to feed on a culturing medium containing Trypanosoma KG1 isolate through an artificial membrane. Trypanosoma KG1 isolate could also be detected from Giemsa-stained smears of the haemolymph up to 30 days post-inoculation into the O. moubata haemocoel. Trypanosoma KG1 isolate cannot be propagated in laboratory animals including mice, rats, rabbits and sheep. A phylogenetic tree constructed with the 18S rRNA gene indicates that Trypanosoma KG1 is a member of the stercorarian trypanosomes.

Experiments and numerical simulations are carried out to verify the existence of the acoustic solitary wave in an air-filled tube with an array of Helmholtz resonators connected. Following up previous work (Sugimoto et al. 1999), the experiments are improved by using a newly designed piston driver to launch an initially plane pressure pulse and also by extending the tube length from 7.4 m to 10.6 m. To highlight the effect of the array of resonators, the case with no array is also examined in parallel. Direct and indirect checks are made to verify the existence of the solitary wave. The former compares the profiles and propagation speeds of pulses measured experimentally to the solitary-wave solution. The latter checks the validity of nonlinear wave equations in describing real wave evolution in the tube. Solving an initial-value problem numerically with weakly lossy effects of boundary layers and jet loss at the throat of the resonator, comparison is made between measured and simulated evolution. The validity of the equations in the lossy case is necessary to maintain the existence of the solitary wave in the lossless limit. It is revealed that nonlinear wave equations originally derived for unidirectional propagation in the tube can provide a good description of the real evolution, with some allowance for phase shifts on reflection at both ends of the tube. In particular, it turns out that the lossy effects are described quantitatively well. By establishing the validity of the equations, it is concluded that the acoustic solitary wave exists.

This paper considers nonlinear acoustic waves propagating unidirectionally in a gas-filled tube under an axial temperature gradient, and examines whether the energy flux of the waves can be amplified by thermoacoustic effects. An array of Helmholtz resonators is connected to the tube axially to avoid shock formation which would otherwise give rise to nonlinear damping of the energy flux. The amplification is expected to be caused by action of the boundary layer doing reverse work, in the presence of the temperature gradient, on the acoustic main flow outside the boundary layer. By the linear theory, the velocity at the edge of the boundary layer is given in terms of the fractional derivatives of the axial velocity of the gas in the acoustic main flow. It is clearly seen how the temperature gradient controls the velocity at the edge. The velocity is almost in phase with the heat flux into the boundary layer from the wall. With effects of both the boundary layer and the array of resonators taken into account, nonlinear wave equations for unidirectional propagation in the tube are derived. Assuming a constant temperature gradient along the tube, the evolution of compression pulses is solved numerically by imposing the initial profiles of both an acoustic solitary wave and of a square pulse. It is revealed that when a positive gradient is imposed, the excess pressure decreases while the particle velocity increases and that the total energy flux can indeed be amplified if the gradient is suitable.

For high density FeRAM devices small cell sizes are essential. The combination of the capacitor on plug (COP) structure with the Chain FeRAM™ cell design is used to develop a 32Mb FeRAM. Based on a 0.2 μm standard CMOS process a silicide capped polysilicon plug is used to contact the bottom electrode of the ferroelectric capacitor to the transistor. The barrier contact to the plug is formed by IrO2/Ir and a sputter deposited PZT (40/60) is used as ferroelectric material. The function of SrRuO3 (SRO) layers at the electrode/PZT interfaces is described in more detail. Double sided SRO results in slightly lower coercive voltage and imprint behavior compared to capacitors without SRO. Double sided SRO is essential to achieve excellent fatigue behavior measured up to 1×1011 switching cycles.

The beneficial effects of a traditional Chinese medicine, Cordyceps sinensis (Cs), on mice with hypoferric anaemia were evaluated by NMR spectroscopy. Experimental hypoferric anaemia was induced in mice by feeding with an Fe-free diet for 6 weeks. They were then given extract from cultured Cs (200 mg/kg body weight daily, orally) and were placed on an Fe-containing recovery diet (35 mg Fe/kg diet) for 4 weeks. In vivo31P and 2H NMR spectra acquired noninvasively and quantitatively at weekly intervals were used to evaluate hepatic energy metabolism and blood flow in the mice. During the 4-week Cs-extract treatment, consistent increases were observed in liver β-ATP: inorganic phosphate value by liver 31P NMR spectroscopy, representing the high energy state, and in blood-flow rate as determined by 2H NMR spectroscopy of deuterated water (D2O) uptake after intravenous injection of D2O. The haematological variables (the packed cell volume and the haemoglobin level) and the hepatic intracellular pH, which was determined from the NMR chemical shift difference between the inorganic phosphate peak and the α-phosphate peak of ATP, were not significantly different between Cs-extract-treated and control mice. As blood flow and energy metabolism are thought to be linked, the Cs-extract-increased hepatic energy metabolism in the dietary hypoferric anaemic mice was concluded to be due to increased hepatic blood flow.
