Color variations from brown to yellow of synthesized goethite have been studied colorimetrically and spectroscopically. Goethite with various colors was synthesized at pH 13 and 40°C by varying the incubation time. Colorimetry revealed that the b* value (yellowish chroma) in L*a*b* color space was a quantitative indicator of color variations of the diluted samples. From UV-VIS-NIR spectra, the increase in the b* value was found to be caused by the increase in crystal field absorptions due to goethite formation around 500 nm. The b* value was a good indicator of the relative proportion of goethite in the precipitates including ferrihydrite. X-ray diffraction patterns and infrared spectra revealed that crystallization of goethite was associated with loss of water from the proto-ferrihydrite.

Low birth weight was associated with cardiometabolic diseases in adult age. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) has a crucial role in fetal growth and also associates with cardiometabolic risks in adults. Therefore, we elucidated the association between IGF-1 level and serum lipids in cord blood of preterm infants. The subjects were 41 consecutive, healthy preterm neonates (27 male, 14 female) born at <37-week gestational age, including 10 small for gestational age (SGA) infants (<10th percentile). IGF-1 levels and serum lipids were measured in cord blood, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) and very low-density lipoprotein triglyceride (VLDLTG) levels were determined by HPLC method. SGA infants had lower IGF-1 (13.1 ± 5.3 ng/ml), total cholesterol (TC) (55.0 ± 14.8), LDLC (21.6 ± 8.3) and HDLC (26.3 ± 11.3) levels, and higher VLDLTG levels (19.0 ± 12.7 mg/dl) than in appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants (53.6 ± 25.6, 83.4 ± 18.9, 36.6 ± 11.1, 38.5 ± 11.6, 8.1 ± 7.0, respectively). In simple regression analyses, log IGF-1 correlated positively with birth weight (r = 0.721, P < 0.001), TC (r = 0.636, P < 0.001), LDLC (r = 0.453, P = 0.006), and HDLC levels (r = 0.648, P < 0.001), and negatively with log TG (r = −0.484, P = 0.002) and log VLDL-TG (r = −0.393, P = 0.018). Multiple regression analyses demonstrated that IGF-1 was an independent predictor of TC, HDLC and TG levels after the gestational age and birth weight were taken into account. In preterm SGA infants, cord blood lipids profile altered with the concomitant decrease in IGF-1 level.

In December 2006, an outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred involving 372 guests and 72 employees at a hotel after a guest vomited in corridors on the third (F3) and 25th (F25) floors. Norovirus with identical genotype was confirmed by real-time reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction in faecal samples from guest cases and employees. Spread of the outbreak on F25 was compared with that on F3. The attack rate in the guests who visited F25 alone (15·0%, 106/708 guests) was significantly higher than in those who visited F3 alone (3·5%, 163/4710 guests) (relative risk 4·3, 95% confidence interval 3·4–5·5, P<0·001). The outbreak on F3 ended within 2 days, while that on F25 extended over 7 days. The environmental ratios of F3 to F25 were 7·4 for volume, 6·9 for floor area and 7·6 for ventilation rate. This outbreak suggests that environmental differences can affect the propagation and persistence of a norovirus outbreak following environmental contamination.

A novel selective and bottom-up deposition process from supercritical CO2 is proposed and demonstrated. Supercritical CO2 fluids are dense media, and a deposition precursor dissolving wherein can easily condences in hollow/concave features. By combining this capillary condensation phenomenon with proper reaction chemistry, it was realized to deposit Ru an Cu in holes and trenches structures preferentially. The capillary condensation occurs better in the narrower features, we call this method “gtopography-sensitive” selective deposition technique.

The compression and the tension tests of liquid-phase sintered β-SiC fabricated by hot-pressing using ultra fine powders were performed at 1973 K ∼ 2048 K in N2 atmosphere. Amorphous phases were observed at the grain boundaries and at multi-grain junctions in the assintered material. Strain hardening was observed under all experimental conditions. Stress exponents in the compression test were from 1.7 to 2.1 in the temperature ranging from 1973 K to 2023 K. A maximum tensile elongation of 170 % was achieved at the initial strain rate of 2 Χ 10−5 s−1 at 2048 K.

Cubic GaN (c-GaN) layers were grown by if-plasma source MBE on (001) GaAs prepared by atomic-hydrogen treatment at “high temperatures”, and the structural properties of the epilayers were investigated by the high-resolution X-ray rocking curve and the reciprocal space mapping measurements. The growth temperature was varied from 620 to 740°C. It was found that single domain “device-quality” c-GaN layers could be grown for the first time; the FWHM of the X-ray rocking curves for the (002) c-GaN could be as small as 70 - 90 arcsec and the inclusion of h-GaN phase in the c-GaN epilayers grown at temperatures above 680°C could be less than 4×10-3.

Growth of high quality c-GaN on atomic-H treated (001) GaAs was examined by rf plasma-assisted MBE. First the initial growth stages (atomic-H treatment of GaAs, nitridation/deposition of a thin GaN buffer layer, the post deposition annealing of the buffer layer, and epitaxy of c-GaN) were studied by RHEED and AFM observations. It was found that atomically flat GaAs surface with one monolayer-height steps and ragged step edges could be obtained by the atomic-H treatment at high temperatures. It was found that the atomic-H treated GaAs surface was preferable to grow high quality c-GaN; the FWHM of the X-ray rocking curve for the (002) c-GaN was as small as 70 – 90 arcsec.

Fast-myosin in frozen histological sections of eight, 10, 11 and nine muscles of the upper forelimb, lower forelimb, upper hindlimb and lower hindlimb, respectively, of goats was quantified by an immunohistochemical micromethod based on the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The structure of the muscles is well preserved during the immunohistochemical measurement. High fast-myosin levels (more than 201 mg/g total protein) were observed in the triceps brachii (lateral head), rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, semitendinosus, semimembranosus, gastrocnemius (lateral head) and long digital extensor muscles. In contrast, low fast-myosin levels (less than 50 mg/g) were found in the triceps brachii (medial head), superficial digital flexor, vastus intermedialis, and soleus muscles. Fast-myosin-positive fibres (type II or fast-twitch type) were distributed more in the superficial regions than in the deeper regions in the triceps brachii (lateral and long heads), biceps brachii, brachialis, biceps femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, semimembranosus and gastrocnemius (lateral and medial heads) muscles. In contrast, type IIfibres were distributed more in the deeper regions than in the superficial regions in the extensor carpi radialis, deep digital flexor, cranial tibial, deep digital flexor and superficial digital flexor muscles. When the results obtained by the immunohistochemical micromethod were compared with those obtained by biochemical techniques and by histomorphometrical analyses, high correlations were noted. This technique could be used in research projects to study the muscle characteristics that determine meat quality.

Samples of YBa2Cu3O7 were prepared by sol-gel, co-precipitation, and solid state processes. Sol-gel samples were prepared from a solution of yttrium, barium, and copper nitrates dissolved in ethylene glycol, co-precipitated samples were made by the amorphous citrate method, and solid state samples were prepared by conventional high temperature reaction of the appropriate metal oxides and carbonates. The sol-gel process was shown to yield superconducting samples of superior Meissner effect, critical current, and critical field. The co-precipitated samples contain impurities that affect the critical properties. The sol-gel and co-precipitated processes yield materials with well-formed, plate-like particles with a fairly uniform size of about 10 μm. The grains in the solid state sample are smaller but have a much wider distribution of sizes than the samples prepared by solution methods.
